Huey Lewis and The News were the embodiment of the "party rock" sound that was so hugely popular in the 80's. You were never bored at a Huey Lewis show, it was always a big old party with those guys!

I'm kind of reminded of the Greg Kihn Band, similar and popular '80s type rock'n'roll, their biggest hit was probably the quite amazing Jeopardy" (1983) with its creepy music video this sort of spooky thing was all the rage in early '80s promo clips. Still as catchy a number today as it was back then. th-cam.com/video/43_GqFW7iYc/w-d-xo.html

Ah Huey! When “Sports” came out, we all bought it. This period (1981-1986) was such a fantastic time for music! So many huge groups! The big 60’s and 70’s groups were still doing new stuff and all these new groups were trying new sounds with every album. The 80’s was the decade of the sax! You guys gotta listen to Springsteen’s song “Jungleland.” Clarence Clemons’ sax solo is akin to Eddie Van Halen’s guitar. Another great sax solo is in “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant” by Billy Joel.

So ironic that Huey was IN Back to the Future, the guy at the beginning who told Marty that he and his band were "just too darn loud". Love this song so much. If you want uptempo for your next Huey outing, check out "Hip to Be Square", or if you want more laid back "If This Is It". Sadly, Huey, now 71, lost his hearing in 2018, but his legacy lives on. "I want a new Drug" blasted out of my bedroom in High School because I had his albums. My Dad complained loudly to my mom about "no son of mine is going to listen to a song about drugs!" But Amber, you are SO RIGHT... and my mom got the message of the song. She had to patiently explain to my Dad that the song wasn't about drugs, it was about the feeling that the love of a woman gives you. Well done! :)

Much later, Huey made the mistake of discussing the matter in an interview for VH1, thus breaching the non-disclosure ... and got successfully sued by Ray. But that's a completely separate matter.

Ivan retman originally approached Lewis to write for the film and showed him a pre release montarge of film clips with this song and asked for something similar. Lewis already had commitments with back to future. So retman asked 50 plus musicians to each try coming up with a song. Like many bands, Huey and the News didn't reach their peak until their 3rd album, "Sports," which is where this song comes from. Even if you have an early hit, a lot of times it takes a while to hit your stride.

When discussing the greatest rock albums of all time, the "Sports" album by Huey Lewis and the News should be at least an Honorable Mention. Almost everything on it was superb. I bought the album for "I Want A New Drug", then loved the whole thing.
Damn I love this song! Next try "If This Is It" or "Bad Is Bad".

Marty's joke in BTTF was that the 1950's audience wasn't ready for his 1980's Eddie Van Halen-like guitar soloing over Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." But, as some have already mentioned, that WAS Huey telling Marty his music was "too darn loud" (while The Pinheads were playing Huey's own song, "The Power of Love").

I put my hand out to Huey (I was hoping he would give me a high five). He grabbed my hand! I was in total shock! Lol It was the highlight of the cruise for me! It was the first one in 2016. I saw him in concert way back in the day. They were awesome, then and now.

Trivia the theme for Ghostbusters was to be written by Huey Lewis but he bailed and they stole the track and made the Ghostbusters theme using this song as the basis of the ray Parker song. Huey Lewis sued and won so he got a settlement from the Ghostbusters theme which sounds just like I want a new drug.

Wrong - Ivan retman originally approached Lewis to write for the film and showed him a pre release montarge of film clips with this song and asked for something similar. Lewis already had commitments with back to future. So retman asked 50 plus musicians to each try coming up with a song. He showed them (including Parker) the Lewis montarge and advised what kind of song he wanted .
Too many coincidences, connections and timing (1year apart)to be accidental.

This may be their funnest song of all. Gotta love it! A brief anecdote - Huey and the band got in a little trouble with parents and other uptight types with the title of this song. I remember the backlash in the news that the band was "promoting drugs" to young people. Totally misinterpreted - what a laugh!
I suggest trying "Jacob's Ladder," "Walking on a Thin Line," and "I Know What I Like" next - all fantastic songs.

I was 13…and Huey Lewis was pretty huge….even when I got into high school my friends and I still jammed to all their stuff and I hung out with the rockers and metal heads, but back in the day most kids were open to a lot more genres, at least where i grew up. We used to crank Huey up in the car when I went out with my gf. Good times!

I was in college when this album came out, and there was this very attractive young lady who was a pastor’s daughter and attended (?) classes at our college and lived nearby. She drove a white Camaro Berlinetta, and more than a couple times stopped at the bus stop and gave me a ride to class or back to my dorm. I know the other guys were impressed, but what I remember most was this specific song (“I Want A New Drug”) coming on her radio 3 times in a row when she picked me up. I took it as a sign and bought the album and played it to death-and I have the memory of Gail the pastor’s daughter in her white Camaro every time I hear it.

I recently heard that Huey Lewis was having trouble on stage at concerts. We are starting to lose great singers like Lewis.
It’s looking like Phil Collins may have to call it a career for some of the difficulties he’s been challenged with.
But if Lewis is able to champion through his challenges and get back on stage then if you’re able - do go check them out. Otherwise, you might be stuck finding live performances on TH-cam or wherever they can be found.

Back when this came out, Huey and the guys are at Red Rocks. This song was super popular.
So the band is bumpin the vamp of this song and Huey is talking to the audience
    Quote during the vamp
“Oh okay I know you heard this song on your alarm this morning…I know you heard it driving in to work. You probably heard this song at work or walking down the street…You might’ve heard this song driving up to the concert. Look I bet you might be kind of sick of this song. We understand. We play this song at every show. We rehearsed it nursed it recorded it, practiced it. We understand that you might have heard this song one too many times……imagine how WE feel about this song. So if you don’t mind we’re gonna try to play it…one…more …..time.We are gonna try to muster up some energy”. You get the point. AND THEN. They ROAR-into it like it was the first time they played it! Like it was the first time we ever heard it! They tore up RED ROCKS with this song. WOW!
That’s when I realized what it means to be a real musician that you can get up there and knock it out of the park even though you played it hundreds of times and it’s gonna sound fresh like you never heard it before that’s what a real musician is and that’s what Huey Lewis and the News is all about!
    BRINGING IT!!!!!

Check out the Retrowave movement in music if you really do want a modern take on this fun 80's music! The Midnight is the perfect gateway into this music, check out songs like "Jason", "Sunset" and their newest song released about 15 days ago called "Heartbeat" It's a very good modern take on the old 80's synths and guitars. I think you both would find things you like in this new Genre.
    ALSO...
Fun Fact: Huey Lewis was approached by the makers of "Ghostbusters" to create a theme for the movie. He turned them down as he was working on a song for Back to the Future (The Power of Love). the Ghostbusters crew then hired someone else to create the theme and they wanted it in the style of Huey Lewis & The News. We got the famous "If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!" Sing it to the intro of this song and you'll quickly find out why Huey Lewis won a lawsuit against the film's production company LOL.
