  • This week I take the Arctic Fox to a Campground in Minnesota. The weather has been cold. The lakes are making ice. It's one of my favorite times to explore Minnesota's campgrounds. I share some of my tips for cold weather camping while exploring an empty State Forest. Sit back and enjoy the adventure and thanks for coming along.

      True story man. I have often been disappointed in what we have become as a society. Than just when I have given up all faith in humankind, something happens that restores my faith. But it's been a real crappy week, so I have lost faith again...but in technology this time. Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave a comment!

      True, my sister & niece still recall the “naked man fire” episode right next to our lake property beach fire. The guys were really drunk & taking turns peeing on the fire. We own the property that we were on, they were renters. The adults in our group were enjoying wine but we leave our clothes on & never pee on the fire! 😂🔥

    I'm not so good with cold. On the Texas Gulf Coast, 'cold' is 40. My camper isn't a 4-season camper, either. I have been in it a few times up in Colorado when the weather dropped into the 20's and even below.. some snow and ice, but I keep a couple of electric heaters and the furnace is good. When I go up in the mountains, I always take 4 full 20 lb cylinders of propane, just to be safe. Thanks for the fun/informative videos! Ed

    We hit it in the summer and fall. I use it as a base spot to hit all the little lakes there for fishing.
    There is one site we always try to get because it puts your camper at an angle and you get a perfect view siping tea or coffee in the morning.
    So glad you dont give out the names of these places lol... it gets black flies really bad during the summer so many camper avoid it. But if you know how to deal with them its awesome and usually not full

    Another informative video!. I took doors/vents off then used thin vinyl signs cut up to make molds with tape. I like the Locktite foam spray into the mold to give a nice 1.5 - 2 inch insulated door/vent. I also used the 1 inch rigid foam with reflective side to line the outside of compartments. In a previous rig I used a thermostat in a double gang box (with outlet) to control a small heater. Now that I have gotten older I seem to have developed an allergy to "white rain"... Now we stay places where the only thing that gets cold is the beer...
    Stay safe sir..

    I have an Artic Fox 811 very similar to your layout except I have a short box. This is how I set mine up for winter use.
    First of all I have an aluminum generator box on the front that is super secure/lockable. The front and sides tilt out from the bottom allowing cool air for the generator. The openings are smaller than the generator there is no way anyone can get it out. The generator is remote start and it can be started from the inside of the camper. I ditched the internal battery and have it wired to the truck battery. This way when its running it trickle charges the truck battery keeping it too charged. Besides the on board fuel tank I have taken an outboard motor pump and plumbed it into the fuel line and use an additional 5 gallon boat tank. Leave the fuel selector to off and the generator will pump from the boat tank. There are lots of you tube videos on how to do this.
    Your ceramic heater idea can be replaced with 100 watt trouble light bulbs, one in the front and one in the space you have the heater in. Again only usable like your heater when you fire up the generator.
    The little 12 volt fan inside is nothing more than a pancake computer fan. First you can upgrade to a little more powerful one. The vent at the front is strictly a vent put a second one in there and you now have double the warm air being forced in. There is enough leakage to the outside through the access doors to allow circulation and it helps keep cold air in the wind from entering. Wired direct means the fan will only run when the furnace runs. When I run the generator and the supplemental electric heat inside the fans will not work if the furnace does not run. To change this I used two Double pole double throw rocker switches located at the fan by the washroom. The main switch is wired so that the 12 volts from the thermostat runs the fan like before and the other side of that switch is wired to full time 12 volt power. The other rocker switch turns on or off the fan in the front. I can heat the basement with one or both and switch between full time on and thermostat only on.
    I insulate the exterior openings the same as you.
    Another way to help heat the camper with a slide is to wire in a rocker switch at the slide controls again double pole double throw so you can select the slide control from either the stock switch or from another supply. I put a double pole double throw momentary on switch up near the head of the bed. In extreme cold I can turn off the stock switch at the back and select the front switch. Once inside I can bring the slide in and seal up the outside to the camper helping to reduce the interior dimensions an sealing out any air leaks.
    Since the generator will run for two days continuously on the boat gas tank my routine is to leave the camper plugged in and remotely fire it up at supper time or any time it gets cool inside. Usually 4 hours a day is enough to top up the truck battery and camper batteries (I use two golf cart 6 volt in series). At the same time the electric heater and the light bulbs in the basement run on 110 volts and I switch on both or one as needed of the fans for the basement. At bed time I switch the fans over to normal to run with the propane furnace. Wind in the slide and go to bed. I have an alarm in the basement for cold temp and one for battery low level. I can remotely fire up the generator from bed if either alarm sounds and the additional heat from the light bulbs will help heat the basement.
    Years of cold weather camping have initiated these changes. Please consider removing that ceramic heater and replacing it with 100 watt bulbs. The generator I use is a Champion 3500 with remote key fob.
    Sorry for the long post but if any of it has given you or anyone else ideas then its not so bad.

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  ปีที่แล้ว

      Man, those are some awesome ideas!!!
      I have since added the switch to the furnace fan like you mentioned. The ability to close the slide from bed is genius! Same with the aux tank for the generator. I have installed an aftermarket wireless starter already. You definitely gave me a little work to do. Thank you so much for the tips!!

    One more thing I might mention is if you have an inverter in your camper. I have mine hooked up, so it provides 110 throughout the whole 110 system. If one happens to be plugged into shore power of any kind, and it goes down you have to be careful that you disconnect the shore power before starting the inverter. If the shore power comes back on while the inverter is running you could have a serious problem. I use a Go Power transfer switch set up to disconnect the shore power any time the inverter is running. I have to shut down the inverter before the transfer switch returns the camper to shore power.
    We have camped in places where power outages happen. Shore power goes out I can start up the inverter for my 110 needs without worrying about still being plugged into shore power. When it comes back up I just shut the inverter down and the transfer switch takes care of everything.

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  ปีที่แล้ว

      Another good tip, thanks. I plug the shore power into the inverter. I don't have a transfer switch. It makes more work for me, but I don't have to worry about what you were mentioning. I may look at installing a transfer switch in my next camper. This one is 20 years old, and I'm not sure many years it has left.

    Great video and tips. It's nice to see you having experience with using the water system down into the single digit temps. It seems that most campers just don't want to deal with freezing temps. Once I finish my camper build, I plan to use it in all 4 seasons so I will definitely use your tips and consider them during the final stages of the camper build. As always, keep up the great content and the community following this channel will keep growing!!

  • @jenniferstewarts4851
    @jenniferstewarts4851 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In Canada people use Diesel parking heaters, they will use "ducts" with dampers in them to allow them to route heat from the heater to the storage area, basement, and such, so if the temp drops into the deep -'s they can open those ducts and the basement area will stay warm, and this also keeps the floor warm so you don't freeze your footsies.
    When you have 30,000 BTU of heat, thats a dry heat not adding moisture to the air like propane does... their camper can be good to -40...

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have looked into those heaters. Hopefully, I will be installing one this summer. I have already picked out the spot to install it.

    • @jenniferstewarts4851
      @jenniferstewarts4851 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KennyOfAllTrades the key things to watch and make sure of, is where you mount the exhaust system, you need a place to mount it that can take heat, and won't be obstructed by snow and such.
      but then, depending on the size you get, that's based on the size of the area being heated, how cold it gets, and how much insulation you have.
      So, with no insulation, at -40, you can still be toasty warm if your heaters powerful enough, but, its likely to burn a lot of fuel.
      on the flip side... well insulated, at -5, you won't need much heat at all.
      Though around here, as a rule of thumb... bigger is better. who cares if it doesn't get down to -70... the heater just won't run at full power, which is a good thing :)

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on, thanks for the tips. I will have to look more when the time comes. Thinking about the 2 or 5 kw. I will probably go with the diesel and run the unit off my silverado tank. I'll make a video of the progress later this summer. Please feel free to speak up with tips during the process. I'm always looking to hear tips from others who have done it before or researched the process. Thanks!

    • @jenniferstewarts4851
      @jenniferstewarts4851 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KennyOfAllTrades Sharing a tank is an option, and they don't use a ton of fuel, but i might rig a system where you have a prime tank for the heater, with the ability to switch to the silverado's tank. Also consider a connector so its not "permanently" connected to the silverado's tank, allowing you to disconnect it if you have to undock the bed camper for some reason. IE truck needs to go in for repairs.
      Following the canadian rule, 2k would do you perfectly well given the small size and insulation... so... 5kw, especially if you want to duct heat under the floor. And 8kw if you want to take your camper to alaska :).

    Truck campers are so cozy when it’s chilly out. We currently have a Lance 992 only had it for a year so far and it’s not a four season. Don’t have that much experience yet but thanks to guys like you others can learn from your experience.
    We ordered a new 2022 Lance 1172 truck camper and this one has the 4 season package. Should be delivered this spring. We ordered 2 lithium batteries, 2 100W solar panels and a propane generator and a tankless water heater. I really don’t care to camp in the winter months but I love the fall especially.
    One thing I learned about propane is that it doesn’t give off much carbon monoxide but in a small enclosed space it can be lethal. I came across this while in law enforcement. I’ve seen those electric bikes around. Might be something to look into.

  • @Propworn

    Just to let you know I took the wall hardware off and the square wood mounting spacers and cut four inches off the table. Makes no difference when down as a bed or when up as a table. With the slide in I can easily get to the bathroom and the back door and use the table. What a difference. I used to leave the slide out most times at home because I might be in and out. Once out in the winter I was concerned about snow build up if and when I was going to close it. On the road if I need to use the washroom/get inside or doing stealth camping I don't have to bump the slide out just leave it in and no problem to slip past.

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is great to hear. I don't put the slide out much in the winter either. The cold winds will find their way past the seals. Another modification I did a little later was to the dinette. I cut some of the backrest out. It made a world of difference getting in the camper while carrying things, with a closed slide. I'll give you a link to that video.

      @Propworn ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice mod I thought about it, but I'm no upholsterer. Easier for me to take 4 inches off the table. RE your cold start with the diesel. I have a Champion remote start genny 3200 watt. I removed the anemic battery and made a cable up to the truck battery. I plug in my block heater and when I run the genny for electric heat it also warms the block and charges the truck battery. I found with the diesel in arctic conditions a heat gun or even a hair drier shoved in the breather snorkel will help with a very warm chuff of air when you crank it over. I am not a fan of solar panels as snow or rain as well as shade and cloud cover reduce the output to next to nothing.

    Thanks for the great channel Kenny! This is really a breath of fresh air for me since I'm a Truck Camper guy also. I stumbled up on your channel recently and subscribed and can't get enough of the videos. My mom and dad had a Truck Camper we traveled in when I was a kid and I'm 60 now and retired and decided it was time for me to get going again so I bought a short bed 1 ton truck with a 4 seasons camper and also an eBike to do exactly what you're doing. I plan on doing as much off grid as I can and your idea about how you power your camper with your truck through the alternator and solenoid is really interesting to me. I'm really looking hard for a way not to have to rely on my onboard generator or some expensive solar upgrade all the time. I've been thinking about adding a second alternator, but maybe I wouldn't have to do that. That said, I wouldn't trust myself to do the work correctly and I'm going to have to hire someone to do it. Do you think you could possibly share with me the specifics of how you set your rig up to get power that way? I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance and keep on coming with the great videos. Blessings, Michael J

      I have a video showing my setup and explaining how I power the camper. Its named "Truck Camper Generator and Inverter / Running the Air Conditioner off Camper Batteries". Send an email with any specific questions. I'll help if I can. My setup is simple and affordable. There is no way I could afford an upgrade to a large lithium setup with a new charging system and solar. I still use flood-acid batteries. Also realize I'm no professional, I have learned through trial and error, more of Jack of all trades. lol

    I'm not as brave as you! We winterize the camper as soon as the weather dips down and we start getting freezing temperatures at night. Then it's a mad rush with everyone in town winterizing for the hunting season lol We call it dry camping and most people that I know dry camp in the fall and winter where I am in BC. Down around Vancouver might be okay year 'round but not up here in the interior. I already had that leak problem with the Adventurer so I'm not risking anything at the moment. That said, your set up looks VERY thorough! You should be able to manage some freezing temps no problem! I love it when there's no one in the parks too :D It's the best time of the year! Thanks for sharing!

      Im thankful i have been finding spots. Sometimes i find its easier to setup camp and ask for forgiveness if someone stops by to tell me the park is closed...Tonight I'm in northern Minnesota. I spent hours looking for a boondocking spot. Most logging roads are blocked off and there's to much snow to go off road. Tonight I am staying in the parking lot between a State Forest Campgroung and a boat landing. It's not the most glamorous spot.....you'll see it in two weeks!

Took down the table and the side against the wall is not finished. Thinking if I take 4 inches off it will make a huge difference getting to the washroom when the slide is in, and it won't affect the table when It's up or down as a bed.

Especially since you need to put the tape on the window frame parallel to the film. Unlike in a house with wood trim where it would be at a 90 degree angle to the film. Just heat the film enough to remove any wrinkle, then STOP heating.

    • @KennyOfAllTrades
      @KennyOfAllTrades  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of condensation forms on the windows and the walls from breathing and cooking. Condensation can also form on the under side of the bed mattress at night while sleeping. The dehumidifier helps take the moisture out of the air. It is opposite from a house in the winter.

    Hi Kenny, if you had a choice of truck campers and knowing that you’ve got an Arctic Fox, what camper would you choose for your needs?

      My requirements are not brand specific. I would require a 4 season with a bathroom (toilet and shower). I would need an AC and stove with a cook top. A north south bed is a must as well. I'm not to picky on brands. Arctic Fox, Lance, Host, Northern Lite or Bigfoot. I would go with what ever I could afford.

    Hey Kenny, what tire are you running again? Nitto Terra or Ridge?

      The Ridge Grappler. I like them. They clean out well in the mud and good in the snow. They're an aggressive tire but still quiet on the hwy.

    If you would build your own camper how would you design a all winter camper ?

    • @KennyOfAllTrades

      If I was building the camper I would start with researching proper insulation and vapor barriers. I think my main source of heat would be a forced air furnace with venting into the basement. I would consider a secondary heat source like a Catalyst heater for off-grid use, and maybe an electrical baseboard if I was connected to power (to conserve propane). Having heat tape on the plumbing would also be nice if you were plugged into shore power. I think quality dual pane windows would be important as well. Great question! There's a lot a person could consider.

    What kind of bike do you have? Is there any aftermarket accessories on it?

    • @KennyOfAllTrades

      Its a Rad Power Bike. I do have some modifications done to it. They are not required to have fun on the bike, I just like tinkering and taking stuff apart. I have upgraded the motor, battery, controller, pretty much everything. You cannot really tell just by looking at it though. The bike is great stock, I would not hesitate to buy it again. The only visible aftermarket piece is the front basket. Its a folding basket off Amazon.
