Despite it being years since Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach's release, I still see countless fans reminiscing on the days of Classic Fnaf. Many seem to feel like Steel Wool studios KILLED Fnaf when they began the modern era. Is the Mimic really worse than William Afton? Is Glamrock Freddy a shell of his former self? What actually changed in the Five Nights at Freddy's Franchise? And how does it all tie back to the Ship of Theseus?

Thanks for watching! Basically, the point of this video was to explain MY thoughts on the evolution of Fnaf. Yeah, I miss classic fnaf, but I'm equally as excited for the future. Some of the songs towards the end of the video are missing the "title" that appears on the top of the screen, that was a glitch. They were deleted but by the time I noticed the video was already uploaded to TH-cam LOL. So you'll never know what music I used... Make sure to like and subscribe for more fnaf videos! Like I said in the video, I bought all the tales and all the frights, and I'm ready to read haha. So, a full Modern Fnaf theory is coming soon!
Scott ruined fnaf
Nah, just addimit you hate FNaF SpookyDood, most UT/DR Fans do
For me what made the older games scary was the sort of nightmare logic they operated on. A hyper specific yet somehow vague set of rules and situations being impossible to escape from, only able to be waited out. It captures a childlike anxiety that I’ve never seen replicated quite as well.
yeah, the fact that theres no solid explanation for it honestly helps the games atmosphere
"She acts human in her movement"
Chica: *Shambling like a zombie*
Yes but that's still human-like movement. It's not the actual movement that is wrong, it's the fact that you see her moving at all. I can shamble like a zombie, it doesn't mean it's non-human-like. She's still walking from point A to point B, and will navigate her surroundings to get there.
@@spookydood5500 this was intended to be a joke, I'm sorry if it came off like as nerd emoji
It is a tough thing to think about. I think the older games were much more scary and had better atmosphere. But they really were struggling with stagnation. After the third game it really felt stale. Even it's strong points. Wasn't as effective.
Honestly yeah, 1-3 were pretty much just EXACTLY the same game with a new skin and 1-2 new mechanics, same for FNAF 4 as well
@@higueraft571I don't know, I really think FNaF 4 was "fresh" with its ambiance and mecanics when it came out, it's still to this day my favourite game in the series.
@@anotherchaos Kinda? Although the sound-reliance WAS pretty much the only thing to mix it up. I think the video mentioned it, but Pewdiepie's reaction kinda summed it up as well :V
@@higueraft571unfortunately true
tbh, i think its just the sudden shift from paranormal horror to scifi horror being completely unplanned.
scifi horror is harder to pull off because devs fall into the trap of *needing* an explanation for everything. Where paranormal horror can function really well without needing everything to have a point to it. And I think that's the issue. They focused way too much on giving everything a purpose and justifying its existence that it.. loses scare factor?
Agreed ❤
The one thing I miss so much about old fnaf was just the odd unexplainable sounds that create this almost surreal atmosphere. Like in fnaf 1 when the toreador march would randomly start playing or foxy would hum. Then in fnaf 2 there’s the iconic ringing when animatronics become active, or the weird squeaking in the between night cutscenes. They were cut in fnaf 3, kinda brought back in fnaf 4 and then from SL onwards they’re just gone. It makes the game’s environment feel so much less mysterious and so much more sterile.
Honestly, I'm fine with the direction of Security Breach, not that I prefer it for FNAF as a whole, but I did have a good time going through that game. Granted, I wasn't taking my time with Security Breach too seriously, and went in knowing it wasn't very scary, but I had fun with it. I think my main issue is that FNAF continues to market itself as horror; all the movies, books, games, etc. are all marketed as horror, but I rarely feel like anything in FNAF is scarier than an episode of Gravity Falls anymore.
However, FNAF is going through one of its newer phases. Like any long-running game series, it needs to do new things and try new directions. While I don't think it should stay on this direction for years and years to come, I don't mind a couple more games that take advantage of this current tonal direction. And hopefully those games can wrap up the current narrative of the Steel Wool titles.
If it were up to me, however, once the "Security Breach saga" ends, I'd like for Steel Wool or whoever else to take FNAF in a darker direction. Not overly gory or anything like that, but just something a bit more intense, where they really play up the horror of these characters. I think the new Into the Pit game may satisfy that need for me, at least from what they've showed.
@@dylanhudec979 How is Steel Wool a bad company though?
@@dmk_ytexactly steel wools finding it's footing I mean we just got help wanted 2
Plus into the pit looks good not to mention many liked Ruin. The thing with Steel Wool is the fans connect much more with characters like Gregory and Cassie, they have many fans in spite of the flaws and people want more of them which is more than you could say for people like Mike or Fritz even if they are retconed to be Mike.@@dylanhudec979
Funny, I just rewatched your Angel's Hell video (big fan of that one) and saw you making that joke about the mimic and I was like "Man, this guy should make more fnaf videos"
I don't hate where FNAF is currently, but I don't think it was the right direction to go in.
I never preferred Freddy as a futuristic advanced robot with character development (as charming as he is) because that removes the whole point of why the animatronics, in general, were threatening and unsettling, they were the exact opposite of that.
While FNAF world already existed prior to it, there's such a clear divide in tone and reality that it didn't really have the same effect that Sister Location had. Once these things start talking to you *as* their characters, it goes from being about the horrors of tormented ghosts trapped in metal and decay blindly seeking revenge, into fanservice: seeing wacky cartoon fellas say goofy lines in between vague spookiness and angst. Definitely not all at once, those original elements are there, but I do think that was when I found myself losing interest.
I thought Pizza Sim was a fun enough, sufficient send off... until it wasn't a send off anymore. You can have fun with the series, but I think fans are going to get the most out of seeing the wacky cartoon animals exhibit fun personalities and situations to draw from, rather than genuine spooks or marginally coherent storytelling.
I believe they still know what made FNaF so scary in the first place, though. They only took time to learn how to reintroduce it without being just "more of the old stuff." And I think nothing shows this more perfectly in recent FNaF History than Help Wanted 2, specifically two minigames: Maintenance Yenndo and Endo Memory. In the first one, it's basically a repeat of Funtime Freddy's minigame from Sister Location, but updated for VR, and with Yenndo instead of Funtime Freddy. Yenndo himself is silly when you look at him under bright light... So the devs made the room almost pitch black, and the only sounds that Yenndo makes being quiet mechanical noises that can easily go unnoticed. Suddenly, you're dealing with a creature cloaked in darkness, making indistinct noises that you can easily miss, not knowing where they are or when they'll attack. They made YENNDO terrifying.
As for the second minigame, it's basically a memory card minigame with an Endo with a TV head. You need to teach it how to behave using this game, and teaching it wrong will result in death. However, there's more to it. This room is dark, and has several other Bare Endos lurking in the darkness, the only sign that they even moved being a loud droning noise that each makes when they move into your line of sight. You need to prevent them from reaching you, by using a camera flash to repel them... But this only works one side at a time. And there are multiple of them circling around you.
So you're trying to teach this Endo carefully, trying to memorize the matching cards, while loud droning buzzes in your ears and red eyes dart around the room, you trying to flash one while the other closes in from behind. It's both terrifying and panic-inducing.
Steel Wool KNOWS how to make scary animatronic horror. But people also like the characters, so they've made the commercial decision to give, well, more character to some of them, while ironically, the Bare Endos retain the old terrifying nature of the franchise.
I think that the most biggest thing that changed fnaf community, separated them on two sides, those who love and those who hate is just unfinished/rushed fnaf security breach, it was really important game to place foundation on where this will all go, the fact that vanny the super cool villain goes t posing you and just disappointing us, becouse we as a huge lovely community made so much impact on how we see mega pizza plex that the own game couldn't represent us the same vibe that we ourself created
The fact is, Scott himself stated in his Dawko Interview that he dosen't like violence and death, he's a Christian dude, he's trying to make FNaF what he actually wants it to be
That was super freaking awesome! I really enjoyed how you look at how FNaF has changed from being scary to being exciting, and why this change is not a bad thing. I do believe FNaF needed this change, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds.
@@dylanhudec979 I think it's pretty good
In my opinion, I think that Steel Wool and Scott had a good idea, a good concept for the modern era of FNAF, but the execution ended up ruining everything and then they didn't even bother to fix it, they left everything as it was and wanted to continue with other things and thus changing the whole lore they changed the endings of sb which made the princess quest the true ending but then help wanted 2 changed that, in help wanted 1 they make vanny the villain of security breach but then it ended up being burntrap for no explanation or reason he simply became the main villain at random and then in the DLC Ruin they changed the villain again without any explanation they changed the villain of the fnaf franchise three times in three games in a row.
@@dylanhudec979 I'm talking about burntrap not glitchtrap they are different characters.
@@dylanhudec979 Until the Ruin DLC was released and Burntrap ceased to exist and the Mimic became the villain without any explanation? :/
@@dylanhudec979 there’s actually 0 evidence of Afton being scanned into the system at all, all we know is that circuit boards got scanned. New FNAF video right after I finished watching your previous FNAF video about security breach.
I just wish we kept the old atmosphere
What made the classic games good is that we didn't play for the story, we come into the game and our only objective is to survive, the story we were given is just a bonus, not the main dish, ofc each game got more and more story injected into it, but up until fnaf 4, the main objective is to survive.
fnaf sl is where it shifted into a more story driven focus, giving us set of instructions to follow a story such as press that, do that, go there, stay there, and the classic gameplay was only a bonus in one of the endings.
fnaf 6 also didn't make it the main focus, however, the main gameplay still had more screen time than fnaf sl and people liked it more (aside from scraptrap's design)
fnaf 7 was entirely the gameplay, however, it was mainly focus on doing hard challenges (and the 20/20 mode), which driven away some of the scare away, it's more of a stress now to complete it
fnaf vr & 2 are great if you ignore all the retcons and theories coming for it, but at this point, they focus too much on satisfying the theorists that they force little details in that really shouldn't be forced in, it only makes the game not fun to play
fnaf sb & ruin aren't scary anyways, and it feels like the main point of how they could have made a free roam scary, didn't happen.
When it comes to the FNAF movie, take away the TH-camrs and then it becomes an inconsistent video game movie with no plot. Come on if you want to do Multiple dream sequences make them different from one another.
i love your last fnaf video so much i rewatched it like 20 times intently im so glad you made another ❤
I have never played fnaf but I still really enjoyed this video. Another piece of proof as to why Spookydood is right now the best deltarune content creator. And the fact that we will get so many deltarune videos from him is very exciting! Can’t wait! (Btw, do you still believe that you’ll be able to make 52 videos this year?)
Id say it's more apt to say the series has 3 eras, not 2. There's 1-4 which are all the original story "4 games, 1 story" then there's sister location, pizza sim and the silver eyes trilogy of books that all played together somewhat, and then the steel wool era
Your videos are super high quality. You need more recognition
Thank you for this..... just..... thank you. I started watching you for Deltarune, but this video feels like someone gave a gift to my soul.
I've always loved FNaF, and I'm grateful that SOMEONE has helped me understand everything going on.
Once again, thank you spookydood.
Absolutely wonderful video essay
This is a well done video! Yea as a veteran fan i had noticed the shift happened around sister location, with the whole science mumbo jumbo and remnant and making afton a mad scientist. However a lot of the fans are wrong in taking the blame on steel wool only, they were building up upon the bases scott cawthon himself left. Steel wool didn't changed the picture entirely, it was scott himself, and if that's what he wants for his franchise, then it's ok.
There is also a lot of nostalgia bias and semi blindness towards the old era of fnaf (yea we're on that phase now considering fnaf turns 10 this year 💀). It was special, sure, but it was also starting to become predictable. Fnaf 3 and fnaf 4 were infamous for being too predictable gameplay wise and some people seems to forget that. I started to accept that fnaf is moving towards a different approach, and that's ok. Sure it ain't flawless but nothing on this franchise was flawless anyways, and i guess the whole fanbase should start to make peace with this set of changes. Besides, there's a lot to like about the new era! I see a lot of potential and i hope scott and steel wool can put it to work
You should publish somewhere this Theseurs dilema. Its great idea, i never seen some come out with
Personally. I'd rather have a good story and game with the theme of horrror rather than the games actually being scary. I suppose these games have never really scared me so my perspective is different. Fnaf 4, 6 and help wanted are the only games that actually scared me. If horror was an important part of fnaf for me I wouldn't be a fan
If you're going to make videos on FNAF theories then I hope you can take a step back and ask "was this just a writing oversight?" like you've done at times with UT/DR. Admittedly I'm someone who engages with FNAF as an outsider looking in, but I have a hard time getting into its theory culture when so many people approach it from the angle of "this HAS to mean something! It must be part of the plan!"
this is a very interesting video. i actually never thought about the fact that fnaf has been changing for a while now, and that it might have been directly because of a marketing company.
this was a really great video! it's nice to see someone talk about the series without hating on steel wool. i think at least part of the general dislike for the steel wool era is because of security breach being so broken and unfinished, which is... honestly unfair to shift all the blame onto steel wool for. scott's "make it up as you go" and "leave everything a mystery" style of creating was fine when he was working alone, but he kept that up while he was working with steel wool. and it's common knowledge they were rushed and crunched for a christmas release. so many things were just straight up out of their control and it hurts the little creative in me to see all the hate they got for it. as someone who's been here since markiplier first played it in 2014, despite my general "genwunner" old lady attitude i love the new era and i'm really excited to see where steel wool goes with the franchise.

I agree that the series changed completely. I do not think however that its necessarily a wrong thing. I might be one of the few people who like modern fnaf more than the old, but I still hold very dear all of the franchine and its storytelling :)

I don’t mind FNAF rebooting or having a switch, I just think maybe it’s shouldn’t have continued the main storyline and gone with a different one. Afton. Does. Not. Need. To. Come. Back. I think it goes with that well has dried up from the old games. Because overall security breach seems like it’s trying to tell a story but it didn’t do it very well and then scraptrap -_-
Burntrap may have Afton's bofy, but it's controlled by Glitchtrap whitch is the Mimic AI, not Afton's soul, Afton is dead.
FNAF security breach was where it went wrong. While I personally enjoyed the game, but I do understand everyone’s frustration.
The story was complimented to understand, the game was very buggy when it was first released, the open world of the Pizzaplex was too big, and the majority of the game is a big fetch quest while taking place in one entire night. Not to mention the Faz map is completely useless, and Freddy mentions he marks locations on the map, even though that’s not true.
Like I said, I enjoyed this game, but I will no doubt admit it could have been better.
It’s a solid 7.5/10.
Edit: While Steel Wool didn’t do a terrible job, they did better than Illumix ever did.
With regards to the pizzaplex being too big you would be surprised at how small it feels once you learn off all the locations. It's really not big at all, you can get from any one location to another in less than 5 minutes
That’s true, but when you play for the first time, it does feel too big. Like I said, I personally enjoyed the game, but I will admit it could have been better.
Ok but... have u ever heard of the ship of Theseus?
(megamind voice) *_PRESENTATION!_*
I love all of your videos! Your videos really get my brain workin'!
Personally, as an old enough fnaf fan, I think Help Wanted 2 is a solid step in the right direction.
Yes Steel Wool did ruin FNAF in many ways. First of all, by the time Help Wanted 1 released, they made the actual FNAF games canon to the story/lore and made William Afton come back as an AI Program. If that’s not running out of ideas, I don’t know what is. Plus Help Wanted didn’t even need story in the first place! It should’ve just been FNAF on VR, not an entirely new game that contributes to the main story! Scott wonderfully concluded FNAF in FNAF 6 with Henry’s speech, the death of William and setting the spirits free. UCN is meant to be an epilogue tying up lose ends. I know a lot of people in the FNAF community are mad about William caming back in Security Breach, but how are you guys not mad about the fact he literally came back in Help Wanted which is a game before Security Breach!
The second thing I would like to bring up is Steel Wool including AI heavily in FNAF and over stretching the SCFI formula in this franchise. By the time Sister Location had released, FNAF had sort some changes including SCFI elements in the story. But I can give Sister Location a break as at least Scott still keeps the “haunted spirits possessing the Animatronics” gimmick in the story. Also the SCFI formula works well in Sister Location as it keeps the story realistic and keeps the same horror aspects like the previous four games however only this time with fresh new coat of paint. AI cannot be found in Sister Location, however it takes a toll in Help Wanted 1 & 2 and Security Breach/Ruin. These new modern games are no longer about murdered children possessing robots and willing to take revenge from their killer. It is now about AI programs going rogue Terminator style killing people as “scary” animal robots.
I could go on and on, and on about why Steel Wool is ruining FNAF. However this comment is long enough I can’t write anymore. So I’m going to leave it on this. Steel Wool, if you do somehow in a million years stumble across my comment on this TH-cam video, here’s what I have to say. Change your formula. SCFI and the family friendly direction is definitely not the way to go and it’s causing a massive divide in the FNAF Community. Thank you for reading my long post.

I don't think Security Breach would have been received as poorly as it was if it wasn't so buggy at launch... THAT was by far the biggest problem with the game... That and it's lackluster ending.
"Umm actually, Princess Quest ia the true ending" - 🤓👆
Okay....but is that good?
I like FNAF because of the more grounded setting and how horrifying it is.
Like imagine if Amnesia got a sequel where instead of actually feeling dread from the environment and not knowing what's in the shadows now it's on rails of jump scares and highly scripted scenes...of wait
It was so bad that they made another sequel more inline with the original.
I don't think so. The ga,es couldn't just be the same stuff over and over and even with the many flaws, I actually enjoyed walking around the pizzaplex. I like being able to explore a place like that and kinda wondering how they are still in business. Like I always wanted to wander a mall at night to see what I couldn't during the day. Sounds like creepy but interesting.
I feel like steel wool would have been incredible as curators or just producers/publishers because there is clearly a lot of genuine love. They just aren't competent enough as writers or developers
Did you not enjoy either of the Help Wanted games?
You ARE aware Scott is still writing, right? Stuff like the SL room in SB were entirely Scott's decision/they dont know why it's there :V
Nice video
Describe modern FNaF in simple way:
Horror Game for Children.
That's it, close your book. Children LOVES to act tough specially goes "See? i'm not scared of ha ha funny bear game" that's why most people said "Security Breach is underrated"
These people NEVER play horror games, if they did they will go "Security Breach is not scary" like most majority of FNaF fans are (No i didn't talking about you Security Breach fans)
Glitchtrap should’ve been William and instead of a virus he should’ve been a demon pretending to be a virus
Very well said, and solid thesis.
I would accept it better if it wasn't goofy I feel like fnaf fell off with trying to be scary I think it possible to have character with the monster it just it not horrifying the general horror atmosphere is fading away trying desperately to make it mark.
amazing video as always!
Thank You!!!
This is the same thing that I think happened to Luigis Mansion, the first game has a feel the other two don't because they leaned too hard into characterizing the games "monsters"
I do not mind lore being altered like warhammer 40k has had minor lore changes but FNAF has several times completely retconned its lore like which makes a lot of its older games feel outdated in comparison to the latest games.

The answer is YES
I agree personally I loved security breach was it perfect no but the characters I loved the setting it was big and amazing and it’s a free roaming game which is something that I really was excited for to be honest as long it’s fnaf I’m happy
honestly sccot willing to make such change is great, it's healthy for the franchise, as the video has said, the formula of the og fnaf has already been milked bone dry, keep staying original would just makes everything repetitive and hard to attract new fans
also the classic fnaf formula isn't something that you can add different things to it to makes it feels new, because of it's low complexity, you stay in a place and press different buttons to delay death, you can tell this by looking at fan games and ucn, it's still the same, it doesn't make the horror feels new, it's just gave us more work.
a complete opposite example is monster hunter, mh has the same old formula for 20 years, use different unique weapons to hunt monsters, but just because how complex the system is, adding new monsters, gimmicks, and changes the wepon and the art style a bit, makes everything feel new, but still the same
and the current fnaf format, the seemingly harmless mascot and chasing, if you want to know what it would be like when it's done right, go play poppy play time, it still has like, cute stuff in the ways but, the difference is, it reminds you that this is what they WAS instead of stripping the fear and unknown away, and every main villain in each character has that "in the dark" effect in it, and even that some of them talks friendly, it changes, in to more menacing and threatening
Funny to think fnaf used to be scary as shit. Now it's even hard to call it horror, it's a big stretch at least. Interesting.
FNaF never scared me and i'm it's biggest fan tho

Nah, they didn't in my opinion
I have accepted what fnaf is at this point, and it's something I don't really like anymore. I am not interested in buying any new games, but I do occasionally check up on the franchise just to see what's up. Even my favorite games in the franchise, the originals, are just boring to me now. It is mostly fan games that feed into my classic styled fnaf interests. They tend to have more fun and engaging office gameplay and visuals such as the Flumpty trilogy, as well as having more interesting story and characters such as Radiance's revision of Treasure Island. I used to be obsessed with the fnaf series when it first came out, to a point where they were mostly the only games I was interested in. I'm glad I lost my interest over the main games, as I let myself experience new games and franchises and discover the ones I truly care about. Whether I love or hate fnaf, it was a big part of my younger years and I will always have a soft spot for it. Even if I can't find enjoyment out of it anymore, I am happy that others are able to.
