    You hit the nail on the head within the first five minutes; Rob Marshall directed Chicago and comes from the theater world. That point is always neglected in discussions of why modern musicals can't hold up to Chicago. Marshall understands both film and stage and knows the mechanics of musicals better than any musical director today (except Spielberg of course lol). Now having said that, I'd show TCP some grace. It was better than a lot of what we've been getting lately.

    Excellent reaction!! And “Sweeney Todd” (2007) is my suggestion for your next movie musical reaction 🥧🪒🩸[Tim Burton’s directorial style REALLY works with the source material, IMHO]

    Renee is giving me huge Marylin vibes in "Roxie". The short blonde hair with the red lips and that dress

    I've seen this live twice, but I own the movie DVD & I love it. Such a fun musical, and well done in movie form

    One that I would say was unashamedly a musical was the Matilda the Musical movie. Directed by the director of the musical, Matthew Warchus. Wasn’t in Chicago league, but much better than most recent movie musicals imo.

    Hi, Katharine! I'm a newer subscriber and I've been going through your videos :) You mention The Umbrellas of Cherbourg as a musical/film you haven't seen but I think I would recommend The Young Girls of Rochefort more! I mean definitely both but I prefer Young Girls personally. I guess it just depends on what you'd be in the mood for at the time because Umbrellas is sad and bittersweet while Young Girls is upbeat and connective- oh and has Gene Kelly!
    uggh Cell Block Tango is just so iconic!

      @@itskatharinequinn you're welcome! oh and it's by the same director, btw- Umbrellas and Young Girls are both from Jacques Demy. I forgot to clarify that as to why I was naming that title specifically as a rec.

    I LOVE this movie. When it came out I thought it heralded the return of the American movie musical. Boy was I wrong, but this one at least is close to perfect 🥰

    Rob Marshall's "one episode" of Wonderful World of Disney was the adaptation of Annie with Kathy Bates, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming etc!

    Curious about your thoughts on Into the Woods. I get the humor didn't land like on stage, but after that what were your issues with it?

      For me, it was the slowing down and removal of certain songs that were important. Also, the lack of Rapunzel dying made certain aspects of the Witch's story not work. Though I still thought Meryl Streep was amazing.

    • @BaileeWalsh
      @BaileeWalsh 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree with the person above's comment (and yours about the humor not landing). Rapunzel not dying is a major change and just one of the things altered, under-committed to, or taken out that I felt undermined the themes and messages of the show. Witch's Lament doesn't make as much sense with the Witch just sending her off in the movie. The Baker's Wife's death being having an awkward cut after it looks like she lost her balance was strange to me and an example of under-commitment. I get not knowing how to incorporate a narrator but they also pretty much cut out the Baker's dad, too. I do remember something with him but I'm pretty sure No More is cut, which is like the crux of the Baker's character arc, so that was certainly a choice, and again lessens the themes of the show. Plus, some of his lines in No One Is Alone seem like a direct response to/effect of the development during No More. And all these things made me not really connect to or FEEL THE IMPACT of what's going on- not only just for the movie on it own but especially compared to the OBC and I saw the 2022 revival on tour. Those are some of my thoughts, personally, that I can go into off the top of my head.
