Six Day Remote Spring Trout Fishing Adventure - Portaging, Camping & Canoeing in Interior Algonquin
Enduring a relentless downpour on the second day of our 6-day Algonquin Park interior spring trout fishing expedition, my brother Ted Baird and I tackled the Nippissing River with unwavering determination. Despite the challenging weather, we reeled in numerous large brook trout, our skills as anglers shining through.
Navigating rugged terrain, portaging gear, wading through icy waters, and conquering treacherous rapids, we faced each obstacle head-on, pushing ourselves to the limit. A standout moment was wading through a daunting two-kilometer rapid, our perseverance and teamwork shining as we emerged victorious from the tumultuous waters.
Emerging soaked but exhilarated, Ted and I shared a triumphant grin, knowing we had conquered yet another challenge in the heart of Algonquin Park. With spirits high and hearts full of adventure, we pressed forward, ready to embrace whatever the untamed wilderness had in store for us on the remaining days of our epic trout fishing journey.
Thanks a lot for tuning in! Please let me know what you like most about this video and you can check out the vid from the previous day of this trip here.

Hey Jim! 👋
First of all my husband Jim and I (Sherry) love watching your journey through life. Watched Alone, and have been following you on here for some time. Love your wife Tori, she is truly a rockstar, and of course following her too! Any ways there’s a point, lol. We took our canoe Dolly out for the first time yesterday. We haven’t canoed together before, we loved it! While I was chilling on the beach of one a the rivers we paddled down. My husband Jim took our canoe out, he remembered you talking about the J stroke. He tried it a few times and then got the hang of it. He said he was channeling you!
We love your adventures, your family! Keep safe and healthy! Much love from Northern New York. ❤
Greetings Jim...as usual, despite your battles with the terrain, the weather, the wet firewood you alway stay positive, look happy and are clearly enjoying your time with Mother Nature...your persona is infectious and inspiring!
Love to see the Baird brothers together ❤ yaaaaaaa
me too, lol
Good to see you and Ted back together again. Great one.
Loving North on the canoe's bow. Wow. Dogs are a blessing.
Indeed they are. Thanks!
OMG, Jim, I needed this thank you 🙏🏼 My dog is in kidney failure and I need a temporary distraction while I snuggle her in her last few days.
so sorry to hear this. May your best friend travel with grace and peace.
So very sorry.
I feel so badly for you and your girl. She knows she is loved.
@@michaelbroyer3918 thank you kindly

Ooooh yeahhhhh Jim!!! Looking forward to this episode!! Cool to see you run some of the rapids that I portaged around
Jim and Ted back together again!!@ YYYYYAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Probably the rain and the overcast atmosphere or maybe the new coat but the colors in this video came through beautifully. Great stuff and glad we got to see a bit more of North’s adventures in this one too.
Much appreciated and good to hear re colours. I had to grab a bit so good camcorder in a pinch and that why I couldn’t get this up in 4k so I’m glad to hear it looks good. Next trip will be 4 k for sure
Love coming along with you JiM- a virtual break from “reality” INTO nature❤
So fun to see you two out there 💜
What an amazing trip stay safe outdoors
Thank you, I will
North living his best life!
And your choice of music is great. Thanks. It would be GREAT to hear more of it.
Jujutsu moves... Nicely done
Jim, great content as usual! North had turned into a very good canoe partner.
Indeed he has and thanks very much
Those alder sections are hell sometimes. There are two kinds of waders, those that leak and those that are going to leak. Thanks for that one.
Haha, so true and you’re welcome
Good to see you and Ted together on an adventure.
Awesome! Keep em coming! Love the fishing, canoeing and the comraderie!
I have a brother , and when I watch you guys, you guys work well together. You guys are a great team. Baird Brothers- Adventurers.
Pozdrav iz Croatia
Thanks!!
Hey Jim and Ted this is the SH-T, and thanks for sharing! 👏👏👏🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯🎣🎣🎣
G'day from Melbourne Australia Jim just love watching you Ted together it shows another dimension of adventure plus the banter of brotherly love🎉 please keep the adventures coming😋👍😋
Glad you enjoyed it and will do, thanks!
I absolutely love North lol
Lots of great canoe manufacturers out there...but nova craft stands out. Love that Bob special
Thanks a lot, ya I agree. I think the blue steel is perfect for this trip as it can take a few lumps on the hull running and wading some of the less intense rapids.
Bravo North you are good swimming, nice to see you brothers good fishing 🎣 time.
Yes, thank you
Spring time is here! That means canoe adventures with Jim! Love the vid! Thanks Jim 😊
2 in a row Baird Bros? Outstanding 💯🔥🎣
Great to the last trout. Thank you for sharing once again.
You’re very welcome!
Another great video! TY!
You’re welcome!
North is such a little trooper
North is a beautiful dog!!!!❤ Love him and you too Jim❤❤❤🎉🎉😊😊
Well thanks a lot 😊
A couple tired fisherman and a tired Husky after this one. I'll bet that trout tasted great. Great video Jim. I can't wait for the next one. Thanks! P.S. A farting horse never tires, a farting man's the man to hire. Good night!
Great video
Thank you!
Much of those rips just beg to be run with a pole, snubbing the way through picking and choosing easing over the junk. Amazing trout! Our small streams ran out of water early and I missed some fine trout fishing locally.
You are absolutely right about the pole! You can see my wife and I pole the Bonaventure River in Gaspé in a couple of my previous vids. We picked it way effectively down shallow topics using them.
Love your videos man. We never miss an episode.
These are the best 👍🏻👍🏻🍁
#Bairdbrothers! Wait is that even a tag? What do u do if u get a hole in your vessel? Duct Tape? Thank you Jim for the smile u left on my face.❤
Yeaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!! ❤️🔥👍🏼 🎣
I love it when you drink your whisky. Know one else does. You guys are real. And man those trout!!!!CRAZY BIG ASS TROUT
Family been going to Ahmic since early 1900’s. Love your videos! Thank you for responding on the clothing question-
You've inspired me to train Lyra to run the portages... but every time she still swims down the rapids. 😅 Tips wanted.
Amazing
Thank you Jim for going out again through those beautiful Canadian rivers with your brother and North, what a great dog, I really liked the video🌲😀👉🇦🇷
The Baird brothers ride again! Awesome video, you all must have been way deep in Algonquin park.
I've missed loads Jim I gotta catch up on all when I can.
Looks like we were within +/- 20km of each other! Can't beat good ol' ice out brookies in Algonquin!
Awesome video! Nice to see Ted!
I love your wave imitations. Perhaps you could make a record!
Ramen is like cotton candy 😂😂😂
Beauty
Hiya Jim, This seems a tricky journey with the rubbish weather but, it was interesting and funny. Lovely North and beautiful Fishes were great. I felt like pancakes at camp😅 Thank-you Both❣️
You’re welcome! Ya, this want the easiest day and we were soaked by the end but we did get into some nice fish and it was an adventure for sure.
calm water is a sign that you are about to face a strong current, in vietnam there are many rivers like that, we often row along the stream to catch fish and sometimes return by walking
Awesome guys!
If you had a foldable Reflector Oven...you could bake some of that Brook Trout on a Cedar plank...gives it a great flavor. Or they make thin cedar wood wraps.
Soak that cedar plank in water for a while...smear a light coat of cooking oil on it and lay a fine Brook trout filet on it - great favor. If you use a cedar wrap, soak it in water as well...then just need to wrap it around the filet.
Love these videos, true adventures in amazing landscapes. North is just great and I envy this kind of company, very well done. I'm guessing North has some wolf in the genes? Thought so due to the narrow space between front legs and the very black tip of the tail. Also longer snout.
Greetings from Sweden!
I started this route about a day or two after you guys, made it an 8 day solo. Instead of going back up the Tim I did all those advanced portages through the chain of lakes above the Tim. Got about 10-12 brookies and one nice laker on Burntroot. Double carrying all those portages made for quite the physical challnge. Would have been awesome to bump into you boys out there!
Sweet, ya we had to get through burntroot pretty fast. Up the Tim was a slog. A couple hunt holes in the way but over all, 8 days would have def been better for our route. I saw that other portaging route but stuck to the Tim. I wonder which one is easier.
@@JimBairdAdventurer Those first two long portages were completely overgrown and looked like they havent been used in years. Took me 5-6 hours to double carry everything. Would not reccommend! Although there was a massive moose skull at the end of the first portage. Both ways are pretty tough.
Wow Jim,the weather sucked, but you guys slogged through.North in the rapids, great dog.No arguing with your brother, except the Ramon lol.🇨🇦👍
Love doggie xoxo ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Jim, two things? Thank you for introducing me to Kyle Poole as he mentored me with my beginning business page now! He’s great! Also, Fish Crisp! Yum! Oregon Bass and Rainbows baby!! Eat more fish!
been a minute since I last came through the Nipissing, albeit in the other direction from Burntroot to Gibson - and in mid-summer. Did you happen to see if anything's left of the "Spring POW Camp" along the 370m? I recall some truly majestic trees along that stretch of river as well. More than a few huge farts were busted along there too and I'm still not sure whether it was them or the portages that were the source of the bleeding. Looking forward to the next one!
Even out on the Atlantic coast we had a really early spring so even the sea run trout out here were running back up river early.. I was catching sea runs on a dry fly first week of May way up river from where the trout usually are that time of year…
Wow, crazy
Hahahahaha...@ 35:10 it is Jim "Booger" Baird! Sweet! Love your vids Bro! God Bless your Family!
North is a really cool dog.
“It’s pissing rain eh?’ How Canadian is that! 👍
North is the Best!
tough gig man!!
Jim, is North staying in the water with you bc he knows it's dangerous? Is he taking care of you? He is so adorable when he's sitting on that canoe seat. North needs his own channel....
The last few months I've had seizure issues. The same as my maternal grandmother. When I get into the woods I get really dizzy, and may trigger a seizure. Anything that replicates a strobe gives me issues too, like sunlight through the trees. I turn fifty-eight today and I think that my wilderness adventures may be over. Yesterday and the day before I drove to the BWCA and paddled down a lake. I was solo which was really dumb. I fished for lake trout. At least I can watch your videos, since I don't think that I can venture into the woods anymore!
Do a rain dance, we need more rain to rise the river levels, we gotta get through summer and fall even, given that 3 and I think the NWT + provinces were evacuated by fires. North is such a well behaved dog great swimmer!
This was an itch that needed scratching Jim …thanks!
1st and for ever ❤
I love North!
You Jim have BIG BALLS just like the AC/DC SONG "BIG BALLS" 😊😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😂
So glad to see ted and y'all back at it... but why was he so quite this time? Bummer
Shumani Tutanka Ob Wachi! (Paddles with wolves)
Great Channel gents! Any sign of Tom Thompsons ghost? Its quite a story for Murder Mystery buffs.
Indeed it is and his paintings are amazing. So many and he was really so young. Sad story but maybe no one will ever really know what happened.
Hello Jim, as an avid viewer of your channel and now your beloveds channel, I’ve asked this question in the past and never received a reply, two or three question, on this river your on in this video, your telling us you cannot pull up anywhere along this river and set up camp, it has to be designated areas? next question, cooking your trout, any particular seasoning you put on your trout? really looks awesome, looks like a great river to travel, I thoroughly enjoy your channel, and Now Tori’s, Robert in Ala.
That’s right as in Algonquin Park you are only aloud to camp in designated campsites. There are also a lot of rigged, steep, alder chocked banks along this river too with basically no half decent places to camp outside of the ones that are designated sites. My favourite seasoning for trout is Old Bay!
@@JimBairdAdventurer thanks for your reply, never would have thought a remote place like that would have been a place for reservations, as far as the spice, never heard of it but will look it up, enjoy your videos
@@robertmauter6493Old Bay Seasons good on just about anything that you get out of the water it's exceptionally amazing for shrimp and crab boils and crawfish as well.
two funny thoughts...one where you were pulling your canoe with north in it over the log it reminded me of when you did the same thing with Buck, he was sleeping I think and you said "Buck you fat bastard"...and you said you can use your canoe as a cane. does that make it a cane-oo? nice fish boys!
Did both of you sleep in that little tent? After what you said at 44:52 oh brother lol!🐾🐾
Yes but we sleep head to toe, way more space! Not sure what we said at 44:52 but I’m laughing anyways at what it might be.
Glad to hear you give credit to the Creator….not the “river gods”😇
Thanks, I feel like people say the fish gods or the river gods but it’s almost always used as a slightly humorously-intended way of explaining good luck and bad luck with weather, fishing, etc.
JIMBO TED Oh Ted you know you will catch BIGGER FISH in the next one !!! Ted You will out do Jim I can feel it in my BONES haha giggle !!! North is doing great there !!! I know it can be something to keep up with puppies !!! Glad you had a great trip I could smell the smoke I got smell a vision here haha giggle !!!
I frekin knew u guys were at loontail😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Always love following you on your trips…I head up to a cabin on Ahmic Lake every summer so these videos truly get me ready for some paddling. I was wondering are you wearing waders or wader pants and what type of shoes? thank you
They’re vest waders with neoprene socks and I’m wearing simms wading boots
Ahmic is right in my neck of the woods
Hi Jim,
Love your videos,
Have you had to patch the blue steel in places?
I bought a neglected one a few years ago and had to replace all the woodwork and so epoxy repairs. It has now turned green maybe being left outside for so long. I have a royalex 15 ft NC prospector as well.
Love to send photos of restoration.
I would definitely try to look after ash.
Cheers
Paul from Liverpool
Is north a dog or a dolphin 🐬😊 great video thanks for sharing..
funny as hell about the noodles, pure toxins lol
Low quality food to a T
"He's on some weird survival tip now he doesn't want any noodles!" Oh man! 😂 Best comment ever, Ted!
That's amazing how North balances on the seat! You're lucky he has such a good temperament, I've got one husky who would run along the shore and wait for me, and another husky who would be f** GONE first deer she saw! 😂
On a more solemn note, wolfy looking dogs like North get shot by idiots who think they're hunters, on a semi-regular basis. He should probably wear something high vis to make it obvious to such idiots that he's a dog don't you think?
I LIKE YOU TAKE YOUR BEST FRIEND WITH YOU ,YOUR DOG.
Thanks!
question/ video idea: how does one with little to no experience begin doing these trips? I'd assume you'd take a crawl, walk, run approach but a video on how this would look and how to get started and eventually graduate to final boss status would be sick. how does one learn to read a river without being on the river?
