He actually talks about how he did that video and it was all done in one take that’s the passion that the guy has. he is a cult hero amongst V8 supercar fans in Australia. 161 laps of sheer torture at break neck speed...and it's SO awesome to watch. As an Aussie bloke I can honestly say there are two weekends in Australia where nothing else matters - the last Saturday in September for the AFL Grand Final and two weeks later, the Bathurst 1000. It's an epic time of the year. The other 50 weeks are boring as hell!
Qualifications and the porsche cup were today. 1000 on sunday. Even if you cant be there, nothing better than breaking out the food and beers and watching it on the tele the whole day long

G'day Ian. Mt Panorama was originally a scenic road, all dirt. The Bathurst 1000 race is the king of Australian sports. There's no weekend like it in this country. I've driven around that track many times and what you see on tv does it no justice. It's a really difficult circuit, extremely unforgiving. While driving around at 50kph, I just couldn't imagine doing it at an extra 150kph. This circuit commands your respect, and if you don't respect it, you're in trouble.
The rally bad crash at 7:07 with the Pepsi Max car was Chaz Mostert. He got pretty badly hurt in the crash but came back to racing as soon as he was well, he gets props for that. The car wreckage is in the Automotive museum just next to Murrays Corner at the track entry, it's pretty scary to see up close, that thing was destroyed.
Excellent! NOW you REALLY get it! And this was just ONE lap! There is NOTHING like this track and race, ANYWHERE in the world. Good on you, Ian! Cheers.

im late to your party... but yeah ... shook my head that you didnt get to this vid waaay sooner lol ... possibly the best comentary on the mountain. thumbs up all round :D love the enthusiasm!
Ex driver Ex team owner A legend in our sport I was there the year they broadcast this piece and can honestly admit I teared up😁 As guys have said, Fox sport decided to drop him from the commentary team, well they soon learnt that that would be suicide as there was an uproar from fans all across the country and they had to eat humble pie and re-instate him.
Just watched another Bathust race. It is truly the worlds best car race. It is hours of drivers driving at 95% effort but being 100% consistent, then in the last 20 laps it is madness of drivers driving at 120% of their and their cars ability, putting absolutely everything on the line and just going for it. It is a race where every year something unexpected and strange happens, today it was an echidna entering the track causing a safety car. The smallest things put cars out of the race. There is heartbreak, there is incredible excitement and it's all due to the mountain. What a race what a day. Love it.
Skyline, the cutting and forest elbow are the best bits of the track 💕 and I'm old enough to remember befor they put the extra turns at the bottom, used to be a straight shot down and turn onto the straight
I live in Bathurst, and theres a couple things i can tell you: #1: Camping at the top of the mountain, that bit where you see literally 60,000 people standing at the fence going past the grate, and stumbling down on Sunday morning, hung over to within an inch of your existence to watch 7 hours of racing is top 3 best things you'll ever do with your life. #2: i've done some amateur racing on mount panorama, and i've done that bit Larko spoke about down where you need to "be a balarina", specifically where you leave the esses, get your drive wheels back on the ground and immediately mat it all the way to the brake point for forrest elbow, in a 6 speed LS1 SS Commodore (4 door version of the 2005 pontiac gto) & i promise you, with half the power of a supercar, it takes every fibre of your being and literally screaming at yourself to hold full throttle through 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear down that grade. Beats any roller coaster. This is the best place in the world, and once you experience it, you'll never be swayed.
He explains it well because he is one of the greats of the mountain. A driver. This is the most stiring video in motorsport. IWrocker, you have to come to Australia one year for the Bathurst weekend. Classic cars racing, pro-am racing, GTCup etc. This track is actually a public road, there are houses and farms on it. Seeing the track on the screen is one thing, driving it is another universe. You simply cannot fathom the sheer scale of elevation changes until you see it with your own eyes. Come on down under, Im sure your subsciribers would have plenty of cold ones at the ready. You would have a blast. Also it's terribly pleasing to see Americans appreciating what we have and what we do, down under. America and Australia share an automotive motorsport traditiion and culture that's very close in nature.
Mark larkham used to be a driver in Australia and is now part of the commenting team. That video was the intro for each days TV coverage. The rest of the year it is a public road
I’ve watched this video hundreds of times and it never gets old. It is truly an amazing track, even driving it at road speeds is like riding a roller coaster
This video sums up everything I feel about Bathurst. Have watched nearly every single race live on TV since they started broadcasting live in NZ in the 80's. There is something special about that track and Larko sums up the emotion that Bathurst gives in that video perfectly. Every time i watch this, without fail, I get chills and a tear in my eye. Just magic.
I was right there, it happened right in front of me. I've actually got a pic of him just as he clipped the first wall. I didn't realise what had happened until I put the camera down and saw his car up in the air. The distance that car slid after that was amazing, he ended up at the entrance to Forest elbow. I actually thought the worst about what happened to him and the marshalls in that box he took out, glad they were all OK in the end
@@timjohnun4297 it was one of those crashes where you definitely think the worst, but yeh the car just wanted to keep going hey, marshals were bloody lucky no doubt . you were on the scene thats pretty cool 😎👍🏼, I'd love to go watch it live, atleast once
My mate was the cameraman who caught the crash as it happened. He told me afterwards it happened so quickly he had to move the camera ahead of where the car was to keep up. I was actually commentating qualifying for the local radio station and as the crash happened nearly dropped the f-bomb live on air. What the clip doesn't show often was the three flag Marshalls diving out of the way as the car ripped the roof off the marshalling stand.
Great that you have discovered Bathurst 1000 at Mt Panorama and Australian touring car racing. Pity you did not see the best of the best. His name was Peter Brock. 9 time winner of Bathurst 1000. He is famous for 1979 win where he won by 6 laps and broke lap record on the last lap, but he won it on 8 other occasions as well . He won the race more than anyone else and was well named as (and still is) the King of the Mountain. It wasn't just how many times he won. It was his style and the ease with which he seemed to do it that put him a cut above everyone else.
Until you've driven on this public road which becomes a race circuit you cant appreciate the climbs, how narrow the road is on your way to the top of Mt Panorama! The view IS spectacular! Then when you drive at the speed limit through forest elbow imagine going a whole heap faster and trying to turn 1.5 Tonne through those twisty turns, its INSANE! Once your through the dipper. Can you imagine 300KLM/HR! down Conrod and into the kink and pushing on the brake so hard to pull that 1.5 T rocket ship up for the corner? Now your back in your everyday drive as you leave the circuit/public road you've done it once, imagine doing that for another 160 laps. All day long, in the heat, the rain the cold. I believe THIS is the race that stops a nation! If your heart hasn't got a good strangle hold on your back teeth on race day you aint livin!
Mark Larkham is a former race driver and team owner. of Larkham motorsports. He currently is a specialist commentator for Supercars on Fox and the local Channel Seven TV broadcaster. He is a very popular person with the racing public and with the racing fraternity. Mark was stood down from Supercars. By outstanding fan pressure he was reinstated and rightly so. Cheers.
One of the things that no-one ever realizes about Bathurst is the height drop in the Esses when you start coming down the mountain. It is a massive drop into each corner, you cannot see the exit of them, hell, you can't even see the apex of the corner most of the time, all at 200k/h... Each corner drops abt 3m or more in height, it is insane even at 60k/h...
This is Australia’s premium car race, haven’t read all the comments but the track is actually a road with a proper speed limit when racing isn’t happening there, which residents use as there are houses within the track they also do a 12 hour race there as well , Conrad straight was once longer than it is as the right hand turn at the end was put in a few years of ago, if you ever come down under do it when the race is on
Great video. Larkham's first (well, not exactly) touring car race was co-driving with Brock in the Sierra RS500. Sadly the engine blew up in Brockie's first stint. He ran open wheelers and touring cars; even had his own team for some years. He drove Mt. Panorama from mid 90's to mid noughtie's. As a technical commentator, he's great. Funny bastard, too. Actually, all the commentators rag on each other. *edit: If anything is inaccurate, someone will let me know. I'm getting old ;)
Such a great video Ian! Mark Larkham is my favourite supercar analyst, I hadn't seen this before and it gave me chills to watch along with you. Would love a live stream in Oct!
We head up every year barr last year and this year. 28 years of going up and camping on the Mountain. Once you go once, you're addicted. I drive down from Darwin which is 4000kms one way just to get there. Next year I'll be driving from Perth just to get there which is 5000kms. There's not many that are that dedicated
Good one cobber, Bathurst weekend is a long long time, it’s exhausting as a speccy, can only imagine what it must be like for the thousands that put it all together, from the fire marshals all the way to the drivers!!! ( speccy) can be used in Strine 2 ways- as a spectator or as in spectacular, ‘ He dropped a burn out, it was real speccy’
As I told you there is nothing like an expert commentator who has been there and done it to explain Mt Panorama, he says it like it is, this mountain will eat you alive if you get it 1 Millimetre wrong on one lap, and this being a 6 hour race it is full commitment each and every lap. Glad you enjoyed it mate I knew you would, so lets go it is now early morning Sunday my time and already people are up even though it is just after 3 AM walking around chatting catching up talking it up and preparing for the day. I can smell bbq's fired up breakfast being cooked and the sounds of the mountain waking up wildlife still making themselves heard and waiting for the sun to rise. Enjoy your Bathurst day mate I sure will. Keep Safe Keep Strong
You should check out the Holden A9X Torana at Bathurst in 1978 and 1979, especially the 1979 performance driven by Brock...that car was an absolute classic...it is a beautiful looking car...
Or 71 i think it was complete ho domination of the mountain and the bryan burt purple xy having the highest speed down conrod 151 or 153mph for however many years
Im australian. ive seen that video about 3-6 times and every time i get goosebumps and almost tearing up with excitement and disbelief. its the greatest race, nothing comes close to holy bathurst 1000 sunday
a mate of mine and i own the joint lap record at Bathurst, in an old Toyota coaster bus, both directions ! we rolled and smoke joints both directions, didnt even break the speed limit lol
Exactly, it's a right of passage, something that must be attended, and once you've been there, you know you must go again. Only 5 times I've missed this race on tv since 1969, which I always watch from start to finish, and those 5 times I missed it on tv, guess where I was.
Ian when you get a chance (YES I did say when not IF) to come to Australia and NSW. you will have to set aside a Day or two to go to Bathurst and drive around the track, it is a every day normal road, and any picture or thoughts you are imagining about the truck will be totally transformed to just how epic this track is, you cannot put it in words. Larko has done the best attempt.
First viewer. Great track. Massive track. ELITE. Unfortunately, two wheel vehicles are no longer allowed to compete here for safety reasons. ELITE track.
Did you know Conrod Straight in the old days did not have the chase in it. Hence conrod straight. Even Ford top loader gearboxes siezed main shaft gears causing racers to drill extra holes in them to supply enough oil. Then some smart guys came up with the Hollinger gear box. Love your stuff mate. Regards Ken
Yeah Larko is the goods - a serious racer's racer - man who doesn't go there just to turn up. Onya larko. Thanks for the post IWrocker. I like the way you are into racing. You're cool man. Mozzfromoz.
Even people that are not full on in to car racing. The physics and strength of these drivers to even finish Bathurst is incredible. I do a wheelchair accessible taxi shift that is 10 hours. And the hardest thing you do is avoid pot holes and talk hard to get along with customers. And at the time sticking with 60k speed limits. And Peter Brock averaging 130k and have time to wave to his fan's OMG he was a legend.
Bathurst at 60km/hr (37 mph, legal everyday road speed limit, and you'd think that was slow) in a Toyota Corolla is a real eye opener. It's a bloody tall mountain. One of the best drives I've done. Had to do it twice and then again on the way home. I don't know how the guys do it at speed, they don't get to appreciate the view! Every Aussie should put conrod straight into their nav app and click get directions when anywhere near Bathurst.
Aussies are reviving the old F5000 category. Called S5000 it's open wheelers with a 5L V8. GRM is developing the cars. Only small for now but I reckon it's the future of Aussie motorsport.

im late to your party... but yeah ... shook my head that you didnt get to this vid waaay sooner lol ... possibly the best comentary on the mountain. thumbs up all round :D love the enthusiasm!
Larko is the best at Tech talk and describing everything supercars. His passion and knowledge make it worth watching
Ex driver
Ex team owner
A legend in our sport
I was there the year they broadcast this piece and can honestly admit I teared up😁
As guys have said, Fox sport decided to drop him from the commentary team, well they soon learnt that that would be suicide as there was an uproar from fans all across the country and they had to eat humble pie and re-instate him.
True shit? What the hell? Why did they try to fire him? That was a dick move! Glad he is back then it wouldn't be the same without him.
Watching this piece live, when it first aired, was spine tingling for anyone who has the slightest interest in Bathurst.....!
He gives such good insight and you hear him predict things you dont even think about. He was a good drive but hes a great ambassador for the sport.
Love it.
I have not seen that one before thanks for sharing. Mark larkham is a absolutely legend.
Skyline, the cutting and forest elbow are the best bits of the track 💕 and I'm old enough to remember befor they put the extra turns at the bottom, used to be a straight shot down and turn onto the straight
Great reaction and great video from Mark Larkham... Mount Panorama!
I live in Bathurst, and theres a couple things i can tell you:
#1: Camping at the top of the mountain, that bit where you see literally 60,000 people standing at the fence going past the grate, and stumbling down on Sunday morning, hung over to within an inch of your existence to watch 7 hours of racing is top 3 best things you'll ever do with your life.
Looks like Richie Cunningham from Frd Hvn car club at time 5:08. Seriously. That's his name.
Awesome Vid . Larko is the best . Bring on Bathurst 2021 Finally
So PROUD to be an Aussie!
me too mate!
Bloody top video Ian, never seen it before, thx heaps :)
Larko is the best. You should watch the last 5 laps of the 2014 race.
Awesome! That maybe the best video I've ever seen on Mount Panorama. Love Mark Larkam's passion.
Lol, your spell check came up with one of Australia's most hated politicians.
Larko was an outstanding Supercar driver and Team Owner. Legend!! He knows Bathurst from the race seat!!!
Larko always the showman 👍🏻
Mark larkham used to be a driver in Australia and is now part of the commenting team. That video was the intro for each days TV coverage. The rest of the year it is a public road
I’ve watched this video hundreds of times and it never gets old.
It is truly an amazing track, even driving it at road speeds is like riding a roller coaster
Friend of mine won the great race a few years back. He was the co driver. First (AND ONLY) TIME I ever. EVER! cheered a commodore home.
Nice one mate, that’s the true respect for the mountain it deserves 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺👍
This video sums up everything I feel about Bathurst. Have watched nearly every single race live on TV since they started broadcasting live in NZ in the 80's. There is something special about that track and Larko sums up the emotion that Bathurst gives in that video perfectly. Every time i watch this, without fail, I get chills and a tear in my eye. Just magic.
Oh man everytime i see chaz's crash, i look right at his dam leg... makes me feel queasy, Larko is one of the best commentators imo
Brilliant spoken like a real man love it
Great that you have discovered Bathurst 1000 at Mt Panorama and Australian touring car racing.
Larko is a legend. Race car driver owner and now commentator. I was one of them who signed #bringbacklarko. The man is Supercars.
7:20 That car was over and out for good to my knowledge. I think they have it displayed at the motor racing museum.
Ford lover.
That was awesome I have seen that a few times
The winner becomes the " king of the mountain " . Peter brock was a legendary driver who won it 9 times.
Keep Safe Keep Strong
cool! this was my Bathurst video request (tho im sure others also recommended it)
Very cinematic. Larko is great.
You should check out the Holden A9X Torana at Bathurst in 1978 and 1979, especially the 1979 performance driven by Brock...that car was an absolute classic...it is a beautiful looking car...
Or 71 i think it was complete ho domination of the mountain and the bryan burt purple xy having the highest speed down conrod 151 or 153mph for however many years
Larko is a legend - so great to see this getting out there. Especially on Bathurst Day!
I like watching these videos.
G-day from Queensland Australia.
What is cool is that this intro was done in one take and it was actually the rehearsal as well
The Bathurst weekend takes the focus of nearly every Aussie when it's on. The only other race that stops the nation is the Melbourne Cup.
A great video for rookies attacking the mountain. Larko is a legend
Larko always pumps you up, and this send chills down my spine.
This is the best Bathurst promo video ever!
First viewer. Great track. Massive track. ELITE.
Unfortunately, two wheel vehicles are no longer allowed to compete here for safety reasons.
ELITE track.
And if you have a license to drive a vehicle in Australia you're allowed to drive this very track. Yes it's a public road on non race days.
Ozzie oy!!
Not long now the ads for Bathurst are on Aussie TV this week. Larko is the best at technical commentary.
Regards Ken
That crash at 7:07 cleaned out a marshals' stand. Luckily no injuries IIRC
Yeah Larko is the goods - a serious racer's racer - man who doesn't go there just to turn up. Onya larko. Thanks for the post IWrocker. I like the way you are into racing. You're cool man. Mozzfromoz.
Bathurst is around the corner. December 4-5th Sat-Sunday 2021 Qualifying top ten shootout Saturday Race day Sunday can't wait. Bring it on
Even people that are not full on in to car racing.
We love Larko! It's THE race to win.
Aussies are reviving the old F5000 category. Called S5000 it's open wheelers with a 5L V8. GRM is developing the cars.
Only small for now but I reckon it's the future of Aussie motorsport.
Yes and they are going to race around Bathurst. Should be very interesting!
