With acrylics I have no problem with just using hand soap; if it dries on it can be more difficult, but you really should try to be diligent about not letting acrylic dry on brushes anyone, & even still, it can get a lot off if you’re careful not to damage the brush in the process. Also I will note- what I’ve always heard is that warm to hot water helps acrylic bind to bristles, so you should always be using cool water when cleaning acrylics off brushes. I don’t have data on that, but it’s always worked for me. Murphy’s will also work very well- I just rarely find it necessary with acrylics.
With oils, I find that water & hand soap don’t work nearly as well. Even if you don’t have big clumps dried on, these materials seem to fall flat of fully cleaning oil paint from brushes; mine end up still looking stained with pigment, even if there’s no volume of binder to be seen remaining in the bristles. Oils are where Murphy’s (unsurprisingly, as an oil soap) really shines IMO. In situations where NOTHING else (not even dish soap which is strong enough to potentially damage bristles) would get them fully clean, if I leave them to soak with some Murphy’s for 6-12 hours or so, then rinse them clean, it’s so exponentially easier to make sooo much more progress than with any other soap I’ve tried, & can really get them back to basically good as new. Add to that the fact that it’s basically nontoxic, unlike the solvents one might use to clean oil brushes, & how cheap it is, & it’s a really obvious choice for me. Works like a charm.

For dried-on acrylic, I use 99% isopropyl alcohol, which is amazing for dissolving acrylic paint. I'm not sure how good that is for the brush, probably depends on the type of fibre.

Spray and wash that is used for stains on clothes works awesome, It even cleans the wood handle on brushes.You have to try it!!

I was reviewing this video and had a thought. What if you used a "brush comb" - basically it is a metal comb with shaping blades on the ends (Lowe's and Home Depot or Ace Hardware). Most likely a smaller metal comb could be had from a beauty supply store for the smaller brushes. These are great for removing chunks of paint during and after cleaning before conditioning and even to help distribute the conditioner before storing your brushes.
OK so no joke - I actually do this step with this wooden comb I have. Its a little over kill but it does take out the big chunks and helps re-shape the bristles. For more painters the soap will be more than enough.
After cleaning and conditioning the brushes, what do you find is the best way to reshape brushes? I always seem to struggle with my bristles starting to 'flair' out after a while

I had a filbert brush that was caked with oil paint from a few years back and thought it was trash. Someone told me acetone would get it out so I gave it a try before throwing it out. So far the brush seems good and clean, I used some of the bob Ross conditioner afterwards. Only downside was that the acetone was taking the paint off the handle too. I think I'm still going to use your method and also give my brushes a little more tlc than I have in the past
acetone works wonders. Just be carful with it... its strong stuff.
This method works great before you have to resort to acetone ha ha ha... but the best method is YES... to take better care of your brushes ha ha ha

Couple of questions. I have a BR 2” brush that has a lot of hard spots. Would you recommend I use this method of water and Murphy’s oil soap on it? I have always heard water is a big no-no for those brushes, but I’m kind of desperate, lol. I have tried several conditioning with mineral oil with not much luck.
Depends on how hard and how many spots.
I would say give this product a chance first ( th-cam.com/video/gDaoXPk-nWQ/w-d-xo.html ) it works wonders and is less harsh on your brushes ( just let the product soak on the bristles). Plus you can use it going forward. If that doesn't work, then YES use the murphy's soap but make sure you condition the brush after.

How about warm water and dawn soap and olive oil that is what I use on my acrylic paint brushes and beat it using bob ross pail with a beater scream in it and it makes my paint brushes clean and nice and they don’t get hard while I’m not using them they are always soft and nice even my real pointed one’s
That will work in a pinch. In my rabbit hole research I have found from other professional artist and brush makers. That cooking oils like olive oil is not that great. It can have impurities in the oil and also make your brush stink. The recommend an artist grade oil like walnut or safflower instead of olive. Just some extra info for ya.

Depending on where you stopped in the painting process you can just re-wet that section with LW or LC. Many times you won't have to re-wet, you can just paint in the traditional style. Let me know how it goes and would love to see what you painted when you are done.

In the meantime, Bob Ross did a couple "foaming wave seascapes" where he shows a cpl techniques to achieve the foam, also Andrew Tischler has a intricate glowing/foaming seascape. Everyone has a different technique, I think Wild has a great "American technique" that is less intimidating for beginners, like Bob Ross. Andrew is more of a traditional style. Good to study them all and figure what feels right for YOU :)

I was just wondering something. I use the Bob Ross brushes, and they come with warnings not to use water on them due to the bristles absorbing the water and the brush being ruined as a result. Have you had any experiences one way or the other?
When it comes to natural bristle brushes, water can have a negative effect on them HOWEVER, you can still clean them with water if you use a product like this below ( which is what I use and recommend) Check it out!

A newbie here. I thought I saw somewhere you are not to use water to clean your oil paint brushes. But now that I am researching how to clean them most says I can use water. I have Bob Ross brushes and don't want to clean them wrong. Help me here please. I love you videos they have helped me so much and I have learned a lot. Thank you

I have a fan brush which has lost its sharp edge. Like I can't make sharp evergreen trees with it. You know how a fan brush has like a blade like sharp edge. Mine has lost that edge. What do i do?
Sounds like you need to re-shape it. Have you tried using conditioners yet? Below are a few I recommend trying:

...will this work on brushes that have years of dried paint? Very hard at the base.
Oh man - hard to say.... if you really like the brush I think its worth trying. Might take a few tries to get it there so be patient.

Hi do you know if you can clean a wooden palette with white spirit or turpentine
Yeah can but it might be a little too harsh for your palette depending on the wood and It might leave an unpleasant odor behind once cleaned
Try baby oil or corn/cooking oil. Then re-coat in linseed.
Baby oil can work BUT I would not use corn/cooking oil due to the fact that their are impurities in that type of oil.
You should do a video of when it’s time to retire a brush. Some people do not know when brushes are worn out and continue to fight against the bristles. Just a thought.

Could you use titanium white as liquid white because I don't have liquid white?

I had a request for a video. I'm just throwing it out there, if you don't like it no worries. But it takes me all day to do a painting and towards the end I feel Im rushing just to get it done, and it becomes less fun. So I was wondering how to put your paint away so you can reuse it the next day or so. This way you can paint at your leisure over a few days. Just a thought. Thanks

La's Totally Awesome All Purpose Cleaner is a degreaser soap. 8bucks per gallon.
You can soak a brush for around 3-4hrs and the dry paint will come off just check periodically as you don't want to remove the glue holding the bristles.
Anyone see Bob Roses story on TV, so sad his partner hoodwinked his name, after many court battles. His boy cant even use it in his work. Unkle sold him out of his inheritance. Such a Terible history.🙁
