Excellent video thank you. I found that even if I wash the brush’s good and use the beater rack, I still have thinner on the brushes. I was always surprised to see Bob sometimes go right back to paint after cleaning the brush.
When bob beats his brush against the easel leg - that takes off some much thinner ( but its not healthy, splashing around all the thinner ). I suggest use the beater rack in a can then use the blue shop towel to dab dry :)
You come up with the best ideas. I painted my first painting last week and I found I wasted a lot of my odorless paint thinner which as you know cost a lot of money. Thank you
I'm a beginner, can I ask if you can make liquid white out of zinc white instead of titanium white so that the colours you then put on top don't get diluted too much ?
You for sure can - Zinc white ins't as strong/reflective and it is more soft..... So it will need to be more careful/diligent when painting layers. But it will work in a pinch :)
It’s great to see people are still using towels after beat offs! Nice work dude. Do you have any tips of using the liner brush for limbs? I’ve been doing bobs technique for 15 years now but my liner brush always forks out making my limbs look like pitch forks. Any tip? I noticed Bob would do a slight twitch in the hand while turning the brush the opposite way that he loaded it, am I onto something? Thanks

I appreciate your videos for beginner painters. I got my start by watching Bob Ross and Bill Alexander. I am going to suggest something that may be unpopular in the Bob Ross community... Odorless thinner is still a quite toxic substance even if it doesn't stink so badly as turpentine or regular mineral spirits. I am not sure it has ever been the best practice to aerosolize it in your home or studio by "beating the devil" out of brushes that have been dipped in odorless mineral spirits. It creates a fine mist of OMS every time it is done, and while much of it may fall into the trash bin with the rack, a good deal of it disperses into the air. I mean, think about it, would you fill a mister bottle with OMS and spray it in your studio or a room in your home? No, that would be a little nuts... well it is what people do everytime they beat their spirits soaked brushes. I think it may not be a coincidence that Bob died quite young of cancer. Properly handled, OMS are a safe and effective way to clean oil painting brushes. I am certain beating the brushes and dispersing that chemical cloud into your work/living space is not proper handling. Again, I love Bob Ross, and I think you help a lot of folks. I would just like for you and the folks you help to have a long and healthy relationship with painting.

The only way to avoid mud is to practice doing simple paintings and build up from there. Too many new painters try to tackle a complete painting first and it turns out like crap. Start slow and build up.... you will learn how layers work and how to build colors on colors. You dont need to use a black canvas if you dont have one or make one.... Just do it on a white canvas and it will still come out perfect ( it will just be less contrasty is all :P ) Start with the easy sunset - That is on a white canvas :)
I really like your videos, you just got another sub. I have had instances where i didn't do a good enough job cleaning the brush thoroughly (despite my best efforts) and the paint dries, sticking the brush hairs together in chunks. This might seem weird but I found that using a hair comb helps even out the brush again, separating the hairs back into its regular form. Thanks for the good video.

Can you make a tutorial on how to clean off Bob's brushes that had water soluble paint because I was thinking about using them sometime and dont want to ruin my brushes lol
To be honest there isn't much different BUT you would 100% need a product like this ( th-cam.com/video/gDaoXPk-nWQ/w-d-xo.html ). This will help protect and nourish the hair. Making your brushes last longer.
Knowing how to clean a contaminated brush is cool, thx! But I think knowing how to NOT contaminate the brush is usefull too! I tried recently to paint the "winter moon" tutorial of Bob Ross (Season 1, episode 6) and i got myself with blue-ish bushes.... I know that the secret is the consistancy of the paint but.... I can't get it! Any advice? (Or secret?)

technically you never need to dispose of the actual thinner. let it sit for a while in the jar and the paint particles will settle to the bottom. pour off the clean thinner and wipe out the crud from the bottom of your jar. As for the sludge at the bottom paint contaminated paper towels and the like, it has to be taken to a hazardous waste facility to use best environmental practices. Check with your local sanitation dept, or landfill for information on where and when this can be done.
my question is when you apply liquid white and half way thru the painting you get called away and cannot get back to it for a couple days. Is the liquid white still effective or do I need to re apply it to the areas that are not painted? Thank you. Lanny
Best answer is to test with lite brush strokes and color. If it blends... you are good to go. If it doesn't add a tad more medium til it blends to your likking.
I've seen you review a lot of your tools, but I haven't seen anything yet about the easel that you've been using. Have you used other ones and upgraded through different models, or have you always had the one you're using now? Does it work well, or did you have to do some upgrades? And lastly, I know in the very first episode, Bob Ross mentions getting a very sturdy and heavy easel, and I've seen you fairly often having to hold or steady yours, is that something you'd like to upgrade to fix?
My easel is huge - almost too huge to review in my tiny room with the lights and camera at the same time ha ha ha... I am 50/50 on my easel I love it and also hate it. I will do a review, just need to plan out how I do it. The easel is made more for tradition painting so it will sway a little when I paint passionately ( which is why you see me hold it sometimes ). I tested out a lot of easel and this was the one I liked the most for my budget at the time, But I am sure there is better now ( had this for 6+ years) but Better may also cost more now.

You can easily make them with a simple coat of black gesso ( I think the links are in the video description ) But if you can't get Black Gesso you can do it on a white canvas ( Its the same steps ) It just wont be as contrasty :)

Both - Like I said in the 3rd method, I will use the better rack if I need to switch colors on the brush ( aka light to dark kinda thing ) or if I need a super clean brush. If I dont need that, then I will just wipe it off on the towel or pinch the color out :) Hope that makes sense

Sounds like paint is getting caught up in your ferrule and you are not cleaning them all the way through. No joke get this product ( th-cam.com/video/gDaoXPk-nWQ/w-d-xo.html ) It makes cleaning your brushes super easy. Hope that helps

Wiping your brushes that have just been washed in medium on a towel means you'll have the fumes all over. I'd keep the towel in a container. More important the worse the ventilation is where you paint / smaller the place is / more people painting together in class etc. Odourless mediums can be just as health hazardous - they just smell less.

I need these tips! Even with Bob Ross odorless paint thinner I can’t get my brushes clean. They hold so much paint. Annoying.
Are you using a cleaning screen?

When your ready to paint again you just lightly dip it in paint thinner to get off the conditioner. Dab it dry and your good to go :)

How about cleaning the delicate brushes while you work, like the fan and script brushes?
I treat all the brushes the same way - If they are more delicate then I take more time and care cleaning them

Yes they can - you just have to tweak them a little bit to work for your needs.

After I clean my brushes , the next time I use them they are hard , the fan brushes lose their softness , what am I doing wrong ?

Wiping your brushes that have just been washed in medium on a towel means you'll have the fumes all over. I'd keep the towel in a container. More important the worse the ventilation is where you paint / smaller the place is / more people painting together in class etc. Odourless mediums can be just as health hazardous - they just smell less.
This is true mostly all mediums and spirts have some form of VOCs. always recommended to paint in an area with good ventilation and circulation.

His family gets no benefit from anyone buying his products. The crooks that ruined the last part of his life do against his family’s will. I grew up watching him and he is amazing.
