Are cameras really weather resistant? A Sony A7iii real life test

  • So how weather resistant are modern day cameras. My Sony A7iii got a beating this weekend and it survived... Kinda.
I was at the annual Veronica's Cup in Kamnik Slovenia to photograph the archery event. It was four days of raining. Sometimes so hard that I expected the tournament to be stopped.

I put my A7III through torrential rain, and honestly Im impressed that it is still working perfectly fine now considering that the camera body along with the lens I had on it got drenched in water for a good hour or so (though I wouldn't recommend putting any camera through this sort of treatment if it is not needed). I was fully expecting it to shut down on me during a shoot. Whilst the camera may not be advertised as a weather resistant unit, it is still surprisingly rocking on strong for me without any issues.

Hello. Thanks for the comment. I had my in waterfall rain for four complete days. Considering the small issues I had, the camera is totally weather resistant for me. Cheers!

hey TH-cam, I shoot kitesurfing for a living, that means lots of exposure to salty air, sand, ocean water. I think if I'd show you pictures of my gear after a kite surf event you'd cry. Anyway here's my experience - tldr; it's been surprisingly good given the conditions. A7III holding up pretty ok, one bigger repair: lens release button that was getting stuck, and hot shoe got corroded. For the most part camera is doing really well, currently being 3 years old. A7sIII got abused more as its my A cam since 2 years ago. Currently awaiting spare parts to get some dials and buttons replaced. Something about switching to manual focus keeps acting up, and I do get random blackouts sporadically but honestly given the work environment I wouldn't be surprised if this camera died on me a year ago. And speaking of sony and dead cameras - my first ever sony: A6000 died after few months of shooting kiters. So yeah its not too bad,I take them for cleaning/service once a year (pay between 200-500usd) and they keep going

I would give that “Award” to Pentax… Back then my K-5 and K-7 went through rain, snow and rainfalls. Even dropped my K-7 into deep snow :) Had 0 issues with the two. And they were build rugged like a rock :)

    Great photos!
It seems like Sony is not so weather sealed. Not like the Nikon flagships or Olympus flagships.

My experience of Sony not as positive as yours, one time i was shooting with my D850 next to my friend who was shooting with A7R3 and we got hit by a sneaky wave so we all got wet, my D850 survived and keep clicking and his Sony stopped working and later got sent to Precision Camera, the official Sony repair shop in US, another pain to deal store, and they want $2000 to fix it, so my friend ended up with a $3000 worth paper weight..... and i have multiple Sony friends got water damage on their Sony bodies, moral of the story, Sony and water don't get along well. 😀😀😀 so i baby my Sony body like a new born child.

Ha! Yes Nikons are very durable. There was a photographer there with me shooting with a Canon and he had everything wrapped in rain covers saying: "very brave of you for keeping the camera out in the rain." Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

I shot lightning during a storm and just left my a7iii on a tripod while I stayed in my truck. I used the Sony app to release the shutter. It was pokring really hard for an hour. There were no issues at all.

Hi, I have the same issue with my screen with my A7III.
Did you solved the problem ?
The verticals lines disapears alone or did you do something ?
    Thank you :)

@@M1R0_Life_through_a_lens That's interesting, my A73 was water damaged after a rainy time lapse, and SONY repair department told me water will work it's way to the viewfinder if you take the hot shoe cover off, which I did. 🙁
