Can confirm. Have had to use my A9's in the rain multiple times, water flowing out of the LCD and had no problems. Also a boat on lake Como with lots of spray and they were fine.
Thanks for sharing my friend!
I had experience shooting in the rain, soccer tournament last year with A7iv no problems, this year's St Patrick's Day with A7RV and A7IV taking photos of the parade in heavy rain on and off very wet cameras and still working fine. I think the cool part of the rain it made my photos of the parades more colourful and punchy. Both cameras still working great 👍
Just had a stressful moment with my A7IV... Took it out in rain (was raining ~normal amount) and stayed out for around 30 minutes photographing. Got back home, dried up the camera and tucked it in towel to fully dry. Later that day took it out again for another 20 min, but noticed straight away that the viewfinder was foggy. Thought it's condensation from heat/my breath, as I had the camera for 2 years and it had no issues getting wet. BUT, once I got back home, I noticed that viewfinder was heavily fogged up and tried drying it with tissues/hairdryer, but the "bubbles" or moisture was actually in deeper. Packed it up with silica gel and rice in the bag and thankfully, moisture seems to be gone. I'm now scared to take it out anymore, since I'm not sure how it got in and why it fogged up... It's been in waaaay heavier rain for a whole day once and didn't fog up even slightly...
Was your lens also weather sealed? What lens did you use? And did you extend the zoom at all during that time?
@@Maverekt Yes, both lenses I used that day were weather sealed and not taken off in the process. One had internal zoom, so that shouldn't be a problem. I should note, that I used 24-70mm Sigma DG DN prior to this and it was wet for whole day. Had 0 issues then. But now, I guess something was different, not sure what.
I love my Sony A7RIV I didn’t know about the weather sealing I’m using it today in light rain ! I’ll be extra safe and tape around the lens mount and completely cover the mic part
My experience with water in the smart hot shoe is very different. With my A9II water get into the pins, and an error of communication started to happen. I couldn't even continue shooting with it and started using my back up camera. Once the pins dried up, everything went back to normal. After that situation, I always had a hot shoe cover and no problems at all.
Great video. Thank you . Just to ask perhaps you know, is there any raincover light and compact to protect more our cameras and the same time do not loosing anything from their functionality?
Ive used my a7iv in the rain, heavy rain i may ad 2x, and both times the camera has shut its self off, until i remove the battery. Camera issue or Battery issue, im not sure, but its defo had me thinking twice about taking it out in the rain
My first Sony A7R died from the rain. I guess back in 2013, Sony Mirrorless cameras were not weather proofed as the newer versions are now. A freak rain cloud while i was doing landscape photography workshop at Cannonball Beach on the California coastline. Fortunately, I had my Nikon D800 DSLR and it survived. Had both cameras on a tripod doing long exposures on the beach. Did not convert to full mirrorless until the start of 2018 right after D850 was released in September 2017.
Comparing the “weather sealing” between my a7ii and my a7iv’s weather sealing was very eye opening to me. I’ve shot with the a7ii on misty rainy days and didn’t have a problem but I was never confident it could handle more than that. Looking at the gaskets and buttons on the a7iv has only solidified that lack of confidence in the a7ii’s sealing. The iv looks and feels like it’s ready to go under water when compared to the ii. I’ve shot with the a7iv on the water in misty conditions and in some pretty bad rain with no issues so far! Rip to your a7r 🫡
I had a portrait shoot in a rain last week ago. It was an evening shot with moderate rain and I use my a7iv with an 85mm 1.8FE. Nothing really bad happened.
Amen for shooting in the rain. Embrace it! I got my a7r5 :)
Light rain is no problem, I shot several weddings where the camera got a bit wet and had no issues.
I had a client shoot 8-ish years ago on the Hornblower/Maid of the Mist boats that bring you right up to Niagara Falls. It was windy that day so the wind carried the water to essentially pour on the boat to the point that it was almost like we were completely under the falls. Like drenched to the bone within 2 seconds level of wet - can't see more than 2 feet in front of you because it's just water...
I was shooting on my a7Rii at the time and had a raincover on it. My camera overall was fine, but there was just too much water and the internal microphone got fried and stopped working forever. Luckily, it wasn't a huge deal to me because I always used an external mic for video and for photos it didn't affect it at all obviously. But just beware of too much water getting into the microphone hole because it can damage it. But bear in mind that I was in conditions more wet than I think anyone ever will be :P I think in normal rain, it would have been fine.
Excellent and informative video. Thank you very much. I'm about to go so super soak my camera.
I had the viewfinder problem happen to me the first time I shot my a6700 in some light rain and it really freaked me out for a minute lol, quickly realized what happened though and just wiped it off and it went back to normal
Ahhh thanks so much for this!!! I’m shooting bsbds tonight, outdoor venue, forecast is showing a ton of rain, so i as worried!! Thank you!!!
update? how did it go?!
HI MAGIC
TAYLOR? How many cameras have you killed taking photos in the rain?
@@MagicWeddingPhotographer 0! I had a Z6II covered in ice rain that had to thaw out in a bathtub and melt.
Also had a workshop guest completely submerge a camera (in fresh water). We battery pulled and water was leaking out of the battery compartment. Camera turned on and worked fine 5 days later. (Tho I wouldn’t trust it as a main ever again)
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto my Nikon died of salt water.
@@MagicWeddingPhotographer So did one of Coles in Iceland
Fuji?
Last week I dumped my A7IV with a plugged in Microphone into a pond and it was fine
haha that is next level, I'm glad your camera is working!
When I started photography back on 2007-2008 I have no issue using my Nikon D40X in rain
I’m somehow still scared!! Lol
I will definitely shoot in the rain for a workshop on mockup weddings, but definitely not the real weddings. Workshop models are paid so we have to create, if I put the client in the rain I’ll just get killed.
Oh I’ve shot multiple weddings and elopements and it started raining. No difference between workshop and real wedding in terms of equipment :)
@@MagicWeddingPhotographer Here in Texas when it rains it pours, lol. My clients normally prefer not to get into that waterfall
@@jyangphotoatx haha I feel you! But you could try experiment (if you want) - shoot some stuff for yourself in the rain (like friends or models) and maybe when you show this to your clients some would be intro adventurous craziness :)
@@MagicWeddingPhotographer I will LOVE to!
I would love to shoot in the rain, but it damaged my a7r3 LCD screen and it cost me $500 to replace it.
how did it happen?
@@MagicWeddingPhotographer raining day, and the next day the screen started flickering and then it went black, I sent the camera to a sony place and they said there was water residue inside the screen and it needed replacement, That’s why I purchased the Sony A7IV as my main camera y kept my R3 as a back up
I decided not to try the rain again, the repair cost is not worth the risk
I hear about this a lot more with the III and haven't heard of it with the IV.
My Sony Fx30 got wet a few days ago, water got inside the backpack and it didn't want to turn on, can anyone give me some hope? I have it in rice and in silica bags for humidity, it is already 48 hours old, waiting for a miracle and it turns on.
Did it ever start back up?
The bottom of the a7r3 and A9 is poorly sealed. Don't put the camera upside down in the rain or lay it down into a water puddle.
Green background (grass or trees isn’t good for photos)
