During the time when I was transitioning a cat from using the floor to using the litterbox instead, I gave her as much positive reinforcement as I could, and it helped a lot. Every time I saw her in her box, she would get a cat-treat afterward. She caught on quickly, and soon learned to game the system. If she wanted a treat, she'd go sit in her litter box for a minute, not do anything, and then come to me looking for a treat.

Here I am in the year 2023 (gasp!) and I just want to thank you Jackson for all that you have done for cats. You probably will never see this - but if you do: a lot of the things you teach feel very natural to me bc my mom grew up on a little family farm and understood both the “raw cat” and the “compromise” that we make when we bring these amazing beings into our lives. But I know lots of people want to help and love cats but just don’t understand how to incorporate them into their lifestyle. I know you have helped so many to do just that. ❤

My cat randomly decided to start using the toilet. He sat in the bathroom and watched me for a few weeks, I started finding kitty turds in the can. Then I caught him! He loves pooping in the toilet and if I keep the bathroom door shut now he refuses to use the litter box and poops in front of the bathroom door.

Thank you for sharing! what a great cat story! i have a cat that was a rescue, he had been mauled along with his feral litter by a dog. Poor thing was only five days old. OMG from day one he was fierce! He would chew up his nipples for his KMR and make bob cat type noises. And he is so funny!!! He gets these GIANT saucer eyes and will stare at me swishing his tail and as soon as I make eye contact, he jumps up into my arms and makes a pur that sounds like water. But if anybody gets too close to me, he will cut them! He is super protective and wont let my husband raise his voice at me. My husband got grumpy once and learned a lesson, the cat attacked his leg and growled at him all wild and crazy. He is a big beautiful orange cat and is my protector. Also, he loves fruit. He will leap through the air to snatch a strawberry or peach from your hand.

I used to think that my (now) 3 year old cat loved it when I added fresh litter to the box. When the level got low after scooping for several days, I would smooth out the existing litte, pour the new litter over it, and smooth that out as well. Alice always wants to be the first to use the box after I scoop it and I thought it was because she liked a nice clean box. She would be in there for like 5 minutes, scratching and flinging litter everywhere, even outside the covered box. I finally realized that I was thinking like a human, not a cat. I would be happy to have nice, clean litter. As a human child, I enjoyed playing in a sandbox. But Alice is a cat, not a human. Not only was I removing her business cards from a very important scent marker, I was also covering up every trace of remaining scent with the new litter. Duhhh! After my epiphany, I started stirring up the litter, combining the new into the old. Alice no longer flings litter around after I add new litter to the box. Turns out she wasn't joyfully playing, she was churning it up to find her scent. Now I think like a cat instead of a human when it comes to the litter box. When I scrub it out every 6 or 8 months, I reserve some of the old litter and spread it out over the new before I put the box back. I think both of my girls are happier for it. My kids, my friends and my kids' friends all call me a crazy cat lady. To me that's a badge of honor. I've made the effort to understand my pets and they've rewarded me with their trust, respect and lots of love. 😸 And yes, I've made a LOT of compromises with my cats, but they've responded in kind, so I consider it a win/win.

2:30 I have trained my cat to not scream and cry around food time. Insted he sits down and look me in the eyes.
When I lift up his food bag, I ask "Where do we get them?" and he walks over to his bowl. I say "Sit." and he sits down, folding his tail over his front paws and wait for food. Not fuss. (and he was 12 when I first started this)

My roommates cat was so young when he started living with us that he believed he was a human for a long while and would actually use the toilet on his own. We never taught him, and he had a very large litter box of his own! He would just use it on his own. (This wasn't all the time, but a good twice or three times a week) Once my cat joined the house, though I think he figured out he was a cat and started using the liter box exclusively.

Because of my crazy work and school schedules, I have not been as adamant about making sure that the litter boxes are all as squeaky clean as I used to think they should be. Thanks to you I now have been educated that scooping up the solid waste every day is sufficient enough without having to go overboard. Man is one of the few if not the only species that doesn't rely on the sense of smell to get a lot of essential information about most things in our environment. We usually rely on our eyes and that sets us apart from the other animals and not in a good way

Thank you Jackson! I admire and appreciate your sharing knowledge. 99.9% of kids I work with, and adults, pet's are a major part of life. I wanted to share personal experiences with litter box issues. I have worked with a person who needed help with scooping, physically was not able to scoop, so for some I think the automation is needed, not wanted. Personally I just empty a double cup of wood pellet bedding ($5 for 50lbs at feed or farm stores) 2x a week. It's what works for us. I agree it is important to see the cat box as Mr. had crystals that were blocking his tract and he was peeing outside of his box then peeing blood. I hope people are not punishing cats for a urinary infection problem - peeing outside the box. Also a sign of infection is he will scoot on his rear across the floor.

I got an automatic litter box and I think it was a huge waste of money. The trays they use are so expensive, and everything is raked into one place and it smells so much. It's also incredibly inefficient because it rakes clean litter into the waste compartment too, so we go through two or three trays in a month. We tried getting a non-disposable tray, but it gets really gummy and disgusting really fast and it's a pain to change out.
We also have one of those roll and sift boxes and I love it. You can use any kind of clumping litter you'd like and it's way easier to dispose of accumulated waste.

Very well said! I have three cats that don't always get along, but when it comes to using the litter box and eating out of their own dishes, they're always on point. And like you said, it has a lot to do with not scrubbing that box out every week or even two weeks. They need to smell that scent. We don't but they do, and it's important for them to know that the box they use is theirs! Like I said very well said. I usually scrub out the box once every six months as well. Sometimes the litter does break down and I will empty and put fresh litter in there, but otherwise, I just top it off once a week. Like I said, I don't smell it. Others don't smell it, but the cats do and that's their ownership. I have people ask me all the time how I keep my cats from having accidents and I can honestly say I have never had that as an issue and I have been a multiple cat dweller for over twenty years. I even know which section of the litter boxes each of the cats use. They will continue to choose that same spot based on that scent they leave behind. And, like you said, this is also a great way to know if any medical issues arise, because it makes it easier to keep an eye on how their digestive and urinary systems are working. Respect the cat and they'll respect you back. Thanks, again.

My cat toilet trained herself. I took her litterbox away. It had been in the bathroom. She just jumped herself up and started peeing in the toilet. (Automated litter box) Laziness or the need to remove scent immediately is just the assumption. It's an easy judgment.
My baby 'Titus' uses an automated box- and he LOVES it, not only is it a place for him to poo (territory marking) but it's also very entertaining for him to watch it work. He DASHES across the house in full speed just to watch it work.
Our automated box does NOT clean the bio-waste right away either... it does it about 15-20 minutes later; just enough time for us to examine it and make sure he's having healthy bowel movements..(he had a bladder infection once and worms once -not at the same time though- so we are ON IT constantly :).
The bio-waste goes into a receptacle (with filter) that we cannot smell, but HE can- which is what really matters here.
Now because of his previous bladder infection, we trained him to alert us every time he has to use the box.. LITERALLY, he will meow and run over to our feet to catch our attention, then lead us to the box where he'll either use it or show us he just used it.. and we praise him for it with cuddles, kisses, positive affirmations and treats :)
Point being, you CAN use an automated litter box AND still satisfy all the benefits of using a regular litter box (scent marking, checking stools for health)
    ~Namaste~♥

The other factor not addressed is those of us with medical/physical disabilities. The automated boxes are so much easier to handle. I have a spine problem and my cousin has a severe respiratory problem. We just got a cat (I have had one before). I've been ok so far in cleaning the box but seriously considering an automated box for when I am out of town for a few days.
As far as disinfecting, I agree with the exception of an illness. We discovered worms in the cat and immediately switched him to a disposable litter box and disinfected his normal one. After deworming he went back to his normal box.

Never wanted an automated electric box. If I was a cat, which I sometimes think, I would not even want to approach the thing. My cats use their plastic pans and they really like to go outside with me. That seems to be their preference to eliminating and marking. It makes me feel good knowing how much they enjoy being out in the yard with me and able to to do what makes them feel satisfied!

I use 2 clear plastic totes instead of litter boxes. Sides are higher than regular litter boxes so my panther cat doesn't shovel the litter all over the floor. He decided one was for poo and one was for pee. I'm good with that!

Grats on the brevity of your post, I can tell you have a good understanding of cats and have a wealth of information to share and I think it's important that you don't lose the interest of your viewers because a lot of the advice you have can help a lot of people. I don't know who taught me the "slow blink" but it has been the single most effective tool in regaining the trust of cats who have been traumatized. If everyone knew how to properly care for a cat there wouldn't be so many in shelters.

I know this is an old video, but I'm a week old adopter of an 8 week kitten. I'm confused on cleaning the litter box. I thought that cats won't use a litter box if it's kept dirty? I also live with 2 dogs, so keeping odors down are in my favor keeping me scooping the litter box ASAP. Shockingly I find it a fun chore to sift the mess out.

I adopted two older cats who were rescued from a house where 50 cats were living - Needless to say they are frightened cats and had litter box issues and pooped on the kitchen rug - I took Jackson's advice and put three boxes around my condo, one in the kitchen/living room, one in the room where they have their beds and one in my room - There have been no more accidents - I am also trying the slow blink, the bow and the trail of treats - It will take some time, but one of them is coming around and allowing me to pet and scratch her - Sill no holding, but that will eventually happen - The other one is very frightened and may never warm up, but I will give her a good home and hope for the best - Thank you Jackson for all your good advice

To the person with the elderly blind cat who has abandoned the box. If your cat absolutely will not use a box any longer, lay down an area of heavy material like towelling and allow the cat to do its business there. Make sure to keep a good supply so you can take it up daily and wash it. You can even train the animal to use the material in a different area once they know they aren't going to be in trouble and know it is their okay spot to go.

I have a littler robot. I’m very happy with it and glad that I made that purchase. I had just had spinal surgery and wasn’t able to get down and scoop three boxes 2 x per day. We were also moving out of state which meant temporarily moving into our travel trailer. So there just want room in there for 3 boxes. (I have 2 cats.)
One cat is large, the other is small so as far as number 2 goes, it’s easy to tell who’s is who’s. When it comes to number one, my Maine coon has a slight musky scent. (PS it’s actually my Maine coon that’s the small one. She’s a toddler, (2.5 years), and not yet full grown. My big girl is a Turkish angora. They don’t mind sharing one box. I clean the actual part where they “go” every 3 months or so, but only with wet paper towels. I’ve found that the best thing to do as far as keeping a check on their habits is to just open the drawer and look. The drawer (bag) gets changed no less than twice per week. I’ve never completed emptied the litter and started over. Each time I empty the drawer, I just add 3 to 4 scoops of new litter on top.

good information -- my "add on suggestion" regarding urinary difficulties: I've an old cat who pees in his box, but on occasion stands up while going --- so I use cheap, plastic flexible cutting board "sheets" as a shield around the far side of his box (these can be found at places like BB&Beyond in packets of 3 or 4). His urine stream lands on the plastic, he's happy (i.e. still uses his box) and I'm REALLY happy - when any cutting-sheet becomes 'icky' , a quick rinse (outside) with a bit of soap, and it can be re-used with no fuss and no urine smell. Thanks again Jackson for practical advice here & on your show!

If you haven’t tried Skoon cat litter... you should! I don’t smell anything. It’s awesome! I scoop out his poop once or twice a day and leave the litter alone. It stays for at least 2-3 weeks before i toss it and i just use peroxide to clean box once a month. I love what I’ve learned from you so far in just a couple of weeks watching you on the TH-cam! ❤️🐈

I am lucky enough to have made friends with a feral cat overtime. She decided she can benefit from being inside with me (I respect her as some wild foxy pixie thing that for some reason has decided it's not too cramping of her style to hang - don't have expectations of a kitty that doesn't walk on top of doors or pulls everything out of the closet because of the cool russling noise.)
When I met her she was a tree climber who began waiting for me on the roof of my carport to come home. - Just for a chat.
(She wouldn't be touched much back then and wouldn't eat any food given or left out for her. )
I was renting out away from "home" for a contract job. My partner would come up and visit bringing our two cat boys.
They had a litter box for the car. This litter box stayed on carport to be put in again for trip home.
It was a rainy time - and low we found out that China (named by old Southern neighbor who thought she was as tiny and petite as a "Lil ole China doll..") - well China, preferences to use the litter box over digging in wet often muddy yard.
Inside China still uses the box -fastidious ly digging a hole - carefully burying her evidence. We often step in to help her (by removing the offensive matter) or she will pondering and pat the area for quite sometime. Studiously however, not like our two big gooney "always been a housecat" boys. (Even if taken in off the streets as kittens) They don't care if they miss the inside of the box occasionally and if being picky about "covering" will spray cat liter everywhere with abandon while never covering the deed. Or possibly stand up and scratch the walls or other upright surfaces which does nothing to cover anything but is really noisy.
I figure she's more concerned with not being found being such a successfully secretive outdoor kitty - than my gonzos might be of making the big I poop here statement.
Whole point. It was touching to see "wild" Kitty back in the day coming on to patio - to use a dry liter box. And interesting to see how for her - it needs to be discreet.
My neighbors told me she was about 3 as far as people had seen her at the edge of hedges etc. She's a tiny torbie, and just standing in the shade for example, "disappears" from sight.
Luckily, maybe because winter came, and she thinks I have cool things, she was spending a lot of time indoors without acting trapped. (Which always was responded to be letting her out. As officially wild and "not mine" we never locked her in or had excape routes blocked.)
I held my breath and put a collar on her. She left it on. When we had to go home for good - she came too.
And presto. She's still a crazy pixie at times - we laugh to see her sleeping on top of the drapes... but we coexist with joy. And we know she wants a very tidy litter box. Although we like you don't scrub it like crazy. She wants no evidence of being there - and sometimes wants to roll and play there (like she did in the woods) so we maintain it to her standards.
(Oh and yes. 3 cats. 6 boxes variously placed throughout.)

I have four indoor cats. My litter boxes are long storage totes because normal litter boxes are too small for my 10 year old cat Shadow. We have three very large litter boxes and we don't hide our litterboxes. In fact the first thing you see when you walk in the front door is our first litter box. You can't smell the litterboxes. I scoop three times a day and don't usually completely clean the boxes themselves regularly.

  • @mickblock

This is a good point tho, about the territorial security. Although,to a cat, the self cleaning cat boxes don't actually get rid of the scent. They just kind of noisily mutilate the turds and get clogged and make you think that it's easier than scooping yourself.

The Breeze Liter System is the BOMB!!! It's great, especially with multi-cat homes! The pee goes underneath onto pads that act like diapers. With 5 cats, I change the pads maybe once every 8-10 days. You can NOT smell it until it needs to be changed, but check it often to prevent overflow.I have 2 boxes right next to each other.
The pellets leave the poop for observation, so you can watch their stools. If something changes, you know. Also, with the pee being separated, you can see any blood that might be a sign of a UTI.
If you google them, you can get $7 or $10 off coupons! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

type of litter can be an issue too. My Zen will only go on the antibacterial anti-clumping grey clay type and no other. Which since we didnt know that at the time (we had only used the one brand since kittenhood) made her trip to the cattery a much harder experience. So if you can send litter both in the bag and the clean that was in the box along with your cat - its much less stressfull for them

I have two cats - a one year old fur ball (my baby) and a seven month old who I recently took in after my sister got pregnant - and they hardly ever use their litter box because they go out side once, some times twice a day. They were not trained, but taught how to go out, and come back when they are called. They even keep me company when I go to feed my dogs- or play with them. which is nice. -I feel like they enjoy going to the bathroom outside rather then going inside where they are smelling each others poop.

  • @catdog596
    @catdog596 4 ปีที่แล้ว

My cat George figured out how to use the toilet. We'd never heard of toilet training a cat and once we were over the hilarity and laughter, we were sure he was a genius. He had free range of the house and yard, so I guess he had enough opportunity to lay down scent, then use the john. I never wash the box. Clay litter absorbs the smell, but it needs daily scooping to stay good. Thanks, Jackson. I've learned so much.

Two cats in a *shared* litterbox- one started leaving stinky presents just outside the box. It was always when it was getting not so fresh, so I guessed he just wanted the litter swapped out more often so I did (I scoop daily). Fresh litter, he'd still leave presents. Probably because it was shared, I needed to soap and water clean it when I changed the litter, and problem solved. This started after they'd been together for a decade. Cats can be complex (but worth it).

  • @1kinut800
    @1kinut800 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with Jackson's perspective on cats sharing their wildness with us. My first cat I got when he was very young and extremely connected to me (only cat, lonely me), taught him to use the toilet. However, after a year or so, he just decided it was too unnatural for him and started using the box again (I always kept it where it always was just for reassurance). Whatever he wanted was fine with me (I don''t know if I'd be happy having to use a litterbox and would not want someone to force me to). I also figured that at least in the box I could keep track of how much he peed so could jump on any UTI as soon as possible, and toward the end of his life when his poo became real liquidy, got him to the vet only to find he'd developed an inoperable tumor in his gut so decided to have him put to sleep rather than have him suffer the pain of becoming more blocked up. Cats hide their suffering amazingly well so it is often difficult to know when they need medical help so any clues help tremendously. The next set of cats I bought one of those expensive Litter Robots (I think that was the name) and it worked wonderfully, cats seemed to love it since it automatically removed their balls of elimination, and two cats could use one machine. They could still smell the stuff but I couldn't. I also didn't disinfect the thing (as suggested) very often, maybe only every 6 months, except to swab down the outside if it got too dusty or dirty. When those cats got to be around 15 or 16, they found having to "stoop" to get into the rotating ball got to be too hard to do so we all went back to using boxes, lots of them, low-sided so they wouldn't have to step too high to get into them. And, eventually, the old male couldn't handle the box even so we just used "puppy pads" laid out on the linoleum floor of the porchroom, expensive but in my mind the cats were well worth the expense and it kept them NOT eliminating anywhere else but where they were supposed to go (back room has a window that is kept open except in really horrible weather so it was always airy but sheltered back there, they had a catdoor in the door separating that room from the kitchen so the cats could go out there and use the facilities in private). You know, if you just treat your cats as you would want to be treated (isn't that the Golden Rule?), things work out great.

I pretty much fell into a rescue situation with over 50 cats from a hoarder trying to get them in shape to place, and the best way I found of keeping a box is one of those good-sized rubbermaid totes. You can fill that thing half way up with clumping cat litter, and it is a breeze to keep up. No more trying to clean wet clay out of the corners! The cats have no problem getting in and out, and it cuts way down on litter outside of the box.

  • @gedisdiop
    @gedisdiop 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I guess I'm just not there. I used a conventional litter box for years. It was fine when I lived in a single story dwelling, but after moving into this house, there really isn't a good place for a litter box, so the litter box is in the semi-finished basement. It's a real pain to lug my cat's "deposits" up the stairs, especially having bad knees. So I got a "Litter Maid" self scooping box. I love it. My cat loves it. The sensor has never failed, and has a battery back up in case of a power failure. It even has a clock (oohhhh). The collection trays are never "gooey"; just good ol' turds & clumps.
