We Swapped CANAL Life for RIVER Life | Ep. 19

  • Join us for the first two days on the river Thames. We took our home on the river for the first time and wanted to capture it thoroughly. We were pleasantly surprised by how little current there was and how easy it was to find a mooring. This stretch of the Thames is non-tidal and thanks to the lock and weir system the flow is very gentle. Surely it will be different in the winter but in the summer it’s a breeze.
    We’ve been dreaming of going on the Thames since last year but felt a little nervous. Then we were going to join the river this March before the lockdown but our engine wasn’t very well, there were flood warnings in some stretches and we didn’t feel it was the right time. That was definitely a smart choice. If you are thinking of doing the Thames, we definitely recommend starting in Oxford.

    This was a great video. Sorry Miles had to go swimming. Did he find the go pro? Don't worry Marina as I know I have had things happen to me. Many years ago, I had a very nice Minolta camera. I set it on the hood of my car by the windshield, and I was putting my boys in their car seats in the van am I forgot and drove off. Ugh, I was so very sad as I had so many pictures that were so special on it. Now I am talking back about 28 years ago. But it still hurt to loose it. I absolutely love your vlogs. You kids are a breath of fresh air. The scenery is so beautiful. Please keep on doing what you are doing. Hugs from Las Vegas, NV. 💕💕💕

    • @CruisingAlba
      @CruisingAlba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, no worries at all 💜 We move the boat first and then get on electric scooter or a foldy bike and go get the car. Usually we don’t go too far. Both scooter and bike fit in the boot, then we move the car. We only had the car on the K&A and found parking very easy. A little bit of research and google maps work wonders. The car stays in one place for weeks, it’s been fine so far, no regrets!

    Hi Marina and Myles loved the vlog despite the calamities. Cheer up just look on these occurrences as part of life's rich pattern .I guess like most of us you're a little tired of the pandemic and all it has forced on us all.Well back in March when it all started by sheer accident I stumbled upon The Avalon Jazz band and the vivacious singer Tatiana Eva Marie .They normally play French 1930's jazz in the style of Django Rheinhart and Stephan Grapelli She has written a little song about the virus which is a lot of fun....she reminds me of you Marina ,same expressive beauty and sincerity.
    Lots more songs on You tube under her name or the band I hope you like.Enjoy.

    I thought no one was supposed to go into the canal water because it is so filthy and people only swim in the river because it’s cleaner. I’m not sure just what I’ve heard. The canal is full of trash and bacteria and even cow waste ( poop).

    • @t1n4444
      @t1n4444 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, people do fall in, or they drop an item which must be retrieved. So contact with the canal water is inevitable.
      But, agreed you wouldn't want to swim voluntarily.
      As for "animal" wee then some idle buggers empty their cassettes into the wash or over the side in the dead of night.
      In "busy" areas the human pathogens might be quite concentrated. During lockdown the London canals were seen to be almost solid with aquaflora ... you won't need me to explain why. You could Google "eutrophication" ...
      However the best disincentive to go into the canal is the rat wee. Rat wee can "carry" Weil's disease or leptospirosis. You really, really don't want that.
      (In the rural areas you might find the occasional bloated sheep carcase. Do not under any circumstances prod them away from your boat with your pointy boat hook. If the carcase is floating it's because the methane produced by the internal rotting. Making a hole in the skin might well release the gas ... and a sort of "animal ejecta" which could easily coat your boat and "you" in a soup of rotting animal entrails.
      If you have new cuts or scratches then might be a shrewd notion to slap on some of the anti bacterial liquid gel when handing ropes or any item wet from canal water. Or if you have been obliged to get the greenery off the prop.
      Mind you the stuff wrapped around your prop could just as likely be a duvet or clothing.
      If you're really lucky it could be a mattress. Sometimes a person has an "accident" and no facilities for cleaning said item. No prizes for guessing where the item ends up.
      If you fall in and ingest the canal water then it is a good idea to seek medical advice via telephone and follow instructions. Do this sooner rather than later.
      Plus another good idea is to change clothing and a hot shower as soon as.
      The above dangers in a flowing river might be slightly less, but are you going to risk swimming? Could be a rusty shopping trolley or rusty metal or barbed wire.
      Definitely not me.

  • @thelifeofjools8384
    @thelifeofjools8384 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok...but drop the "off grid" intro...you ain't off grid .... Diesel, water, propane and toilet dumps....you're actually more in need of the grid than a flat dweller. I spent 2 years in a motorhome....and it sure isn't off grid !

    • @CruisingAlba
      @CruisingAlba  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thank you for your comment. There are many definitions of "off-grid",one of which is not being connected to water, electricity and waste collection, which is the one we are subscribing to. We are continuous cruisers and we create our own electricity by running the engine, use compost toilet etc... Hope this helps! Marina 🙂
