The Danger of Complaining

  • St. Paul tells us, “Do everything without grumbling,” but even the best-intentioned Christians can fall into a toxic habit of constant complaining. It’s true that sometimes, sharing a complaint can help rectify an unjust situation or call attention to something that needs to change. But when you start fixating on the negative things around you and voicing your critiques or grievances about everything in your life, you imprison yourself in your own personal hell.
    Today, Fr. Mike encourages us to ask for God’s grace to break free from the habit of complaining.

    I too complain too much but this is just a symptom of a bigger problem - being too focused on self. If we stop looking so much at ourselves and our situation and start focusing more on God and on others then we find ourselves complaining less.

My dislike for these people consumed my every thought. These people became the enemy. I was turning into a person I disliked. I finally got off social media and stopped watching the news.

    People, please. He's not saying people can't complain or that their reasons for complaining aren't valid. Coming from someone who is a habitual complainer, I can tell you the entire point of this is video is to help people discern when maybe they're complaining too much. That sometimes people get so used to complaining they can't stop or they don't even realize they're doing it. That maybe every time you go to complain it's better to stop and ask yourself whether or not what you're about to say even needs to be said. He's not telling people not to complain or vent or be unhappy with different situations going on in their personal lives or out in the world. As he stated in the video, complaining can be good. It's at what point is a person complaining so much that they're never going to find peace or are unable to see what blessings they do have.

    You have no idea how important this was for me to just watch and hear. I just found out my ex-wife from 2 years ago I’ve never gotten over, is pregnant. The wave of emotions is unthinkable and I spiraled. Barely hanging on and praying, I watched this and see exactly that these unsettled emotions have held onto me and held me back this whole time. I’m hurt but I dwell on it unintentionally. I’m not who I was created to be in totality. I pray for that and pray to face this inevitable sorrow without complaint but acceptance and hope in what He wants, and abandon what I want. Thanks Father, keep spreading his word. And more good books to read (The Great Divorce is immediately on the top of my list).

    That makes me think of Jonah and the Whale, he didn’t want to go to Nineveh so he runs away. Getting caught in a storm, Jonah tells the crew to throw him overboard only to get swallowed by a whale. He’s being given this opportunity and wasting it. Until he was so small inside the belly of a beast, he cannot see the grace that God gave him. Even how he later was sad over the little tree that withered under the big tree, the default is to complain until you see the hand of God at work.

    I think there's another more sinister layer to complaining that most people don't see and that's complaining in your heart. You may resolve to not complain outwardly with words but all the while quietly complaining in your heart. It's not what goes in that defiles us but what comes from our hearts. I think to overcome complaining we have to not only look at what we say but also what we say in our hearts.

      I used to live in constant fear too. I didn’t know that it was possible to live any other way. Then one day, I noticed that had changed, and at the same time, I recognized that it was because I had been going to Adoration for an hour every week. In Adoration, I had been pouring out all of my fears to the Lord, and I began to hear Him speaking to me. Slowly and inperceptively, that hour every week began to heal me. I began to trust the Lord. I no longer suffer from chronic fear. There is more to it that just going, and talking to God though. I had to act on what God was saying to me too. Did I do that perfectly? No. But when He would say the same thing time after time, it began to sink in. Another point is that It takes some discernment to know when it is the Lord “speaking”, but that too became apparent over time because His “voice” would bring peace and His message would be consistent with what I already knew was good and true. Don’t worry! God will make Himself clear to you. “Trust in Lord with all you heart and lean not on your own understanding; in In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 God bless you!

    So even though we don't want to be habitual complainer or ungrateful we should not cover our ears to legitimate complaints or act as if complaints are not important and dismiss the complainer as someone who is not worthy.

      God bless you, and I hope you have been protected from side effects. I see the tragedy of how human powers handled Covid, but I realize that happened in ways it couldn’t have had we not been a faithless society governed by fear, blame, and anger. It made me more prayerful, brought me to cherish my opportunity to go to church and see my family, and made me see the consequences of not living as if God is a fact, especially for those of us who don’t even doubt it. I witnessed how vulnerable our refusal to speak the truth in love makes us all. I see how that negatively impacted others, so I better understand what sin means to outcomes for whole societies and nations of people. Im more accepting of the fact that I may have to suffer worldly punishments and persecutions for speaking and acting on truth, but Im more willing to endure these things because I see how devastating it is for even those who persecute us when we don’t. I hope you have experienced similar blessings since you wrote about getting vaxxed. No one should be happy about the disgraceful way that was handled. But I hope we all see how the sins of our society were visited upon the whole suffering world because people acted with good intent but no wisdom or enlightenment.

    I agree with Father Mike, but having said that if life keeps kicking you, for instance you have bad health, and are stuck in a horrible job where you barely make ends meet, can't even pay your bills sometimes and have no family, or friends to turn to. It is certainly a lot easier to complain than if you have a big family who loves you very much and would do anything for you, lots of money, have your home paid off, and lots of friends you can rely on. It is a lot easier to complain when your the former. I think God would understand that as well.

    • @lindamartin6798
      @lindamartin6798 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm sorry if the former is your situation. Keep in mind everyone faces difficulties at some point in their lives, some much worse than others, and the easier thing to do isn't the same as the right thing to do. Many people who are poor have better attitudes and grateful hearts than those who are rich. Money doesn't buy happiness. Times when it would be easy to complain would be better spent in prayer, offering it up to God, so that our suffering is joined to Christ's redemptive work, which then makes is useful, unlike just complaining.
      We may not be able to choose our circumstances, but we can choose how we respond to them, and difficult times are opportunities to grow in humility and grow closer to God, recognizing our dependence on Him. We're called to be detached from the things of the world, to be in the world and not of the world, placing God first above all else. One could be very lonely without family or friends (St. Therese de Lisieux lamented not having friends, but then recognized it as a blessing since it allowed her to develop a more intimate friendship with the Lord); what some people see as curses, others see as blessings, or at least not good enough reason to deny praising the Lord. If someone is in the situation you described, I would suggest reading the story of Job in the Bible.
      May God give you peace, joy, and comfort in His unconditional and abundant Love. God bless!

    Thank you father Mike. I am working on it. I was starting to not enjoy my only son who is 3 years old because all I did was complaining.
    Yes, he drives me nuts, but he makes me happy too and he is a gift.
    Now I do focus on guiding him and correcting him and move on.

      Thank you Jesus for giving us a Holy Pontiff who is uncreasingly destroying the One Holy Catholic Church and by every Encyclical he has written has put into place the superior doctrines of Freemasonry! Thank you for giving us spineless Bishops and Priests who are eager to cancel all Orthodox Catholics and strip all faithful priests of their Holy Priesthood while at the same time continue to make sodomy a virtue that merits promotion in the hierarchy of the Church. Thank you Jesus!!! Thank you that this priest exhorts us to not complain about anything, but instead be obedient to Satan and fulfill his all powerful will!!! Let's not complain! Let's do nothing at all!!!

    This was very helpful and I definitely see myself in this state. I do not like myself when like this and become depressed. I never clearly linked the complaining to the depression until now. I will prayer for the grace to be more optimistic and grateful in my thoughts and actions. Thank you Fr. Mike.

    Had to laugh when I watched the video...had been avoiding it because I knew it would touch on me.
    My story: because of covid lockdown on churches, I do my confession in front of Jesus of the Divine Mercy. At one of my confessions I was complaining about something. For my penance I heard Jesus say, "Go and read The Imitation of Christ, chapter 19". I did and the first two sentences say, " What are you saying, My child? Think of My suffering and that of saints, and cease complaining ". I now think twice before complaining.

    It is so very hard not to complain with chronic illness. For real.. It is hard.

    • @granmabern5283
      @granmabern5283 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m reading texts from Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus to learn Joy in suffering. She is a wonderful teacher! Also reading the life of Saint Alphonsus Ligouri...who had similar health problems to mine. I also ask Saint Margaret Clitherow for help when the pain is bad.
      Sometimes I have to cry for a while. Alone with God. Then back to business!

      April, dealing with a chronic illness is awful, Complain as much as you wish !!! 🧸

    • @edwarddesenne6153
      @edwarddesenne6153 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having an illness with no recognised diagnosis or cure causes you to get cut off from people in work , with few friends or family to support you as you get older .

    • @granmabern5283
      @granmabern5283 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edward Desenne Yes. Then you have the added mental suffering! Any invisible illness opens the door to misunderstanding and disapproval from other people. Many people fear and resent what they don’t understand. Maybe to protect themselves?
      This might sound abstract but I really try to find Saints who suffered similar things, and sometimes Divine Providence will present me with a book or a video about just the Saint I needed to make friends with, then I pray (and complain sometimes) to them about it. I ask them for advice and for help.

    • @granmabern5283
      @granmabern5283 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear April, I think the goal is to not let complaining become too frequent, and to avoid bitterness, by learning to sanctify our crosses. If we focus on the sufferings only in a negative way, we are making ourselves suffer more than necessary. Distractions bring some relief.
      We absolutely have to inform our family and caregivers of our condition, but not people who can’t help us.

    Complaining is ingratitude. Find gratitude to God in ALL things. It is there to be found- in all things. Start seeking it and start speaking it. My first born son was born and lived for only a day on this earth. I am grateful to God. Why would I be grateful for this? Because my son is with the lord he is with him very closely - he is loved more than I could ever love him. He is safe, secure and pure in the love of God. Thank you God Thank you

I still feel the presence of "why me" " why couldnt I find a husband" but God choose me to be a Christian and then I feel more calmer.
