Beginner Fly Fishing - Fly Fishing for Bluegill From a Dock

- I am a beginner when it comes to fly fishing. And today, we are fly fishing for bluegill from a dock! This is my second time fly fishing and I am still trying to get the hang of it. I try two different flies today and have good results. I catch a nice bunch of bluegill with some larger fish mixed in. I start out with a small black and red fly, and then switch to a larger naturally colored fly. I was hoping for a bass, or something larger, but I only catch bluegill today. I will have to try fly fishing again in the future. Being a beginner can be intimidating, but I need to keep practicing. #fishing #realistic

Watching those guys bust the surface on your fly and giving you a decent fight...can’t beat that. Enviable. Thanks for sharing these, Alex.
I got hooked into fly fishing several years ago. All self taught from watching different TH-cam videos. Lots of great ones out there. Helpful in learning about your fly lines and leaders and help casting. I would recommend Mad River outfitter’s channel. Great series of instructional videos
man it's not super difficult either people always make it sound more difficult than it really is just practice for a week and you can cast almost anywhere
My brother, you just get it done haha! Thanks for keeping it realistic!
Way to go Alex!! Those were tons of nice bluegills!! This was a wonderful video to watch!! Looking forward to more! Thank you for always keeping it realistic Alex 🙂!!
Looks like you're getting it. I would probably wrap it around myself lol.
The fly with the bristle head is a Muddler Minnow which imitates a grass hopper, cricket, minnow, and sculpin. Very good for multi-species fly fishing such as sunfish, trout, and bass. My favorite bass bug is the Dalberg Diver, which caught me a 5 pound largemouth bass, big chain pickerel, and huge warmouth in 30 minutes.
Hey Alex I only just recently discovered your show, and I’ve been binge watching it…most anglers I subscribe to have all this fancy gear and a boat and fish finders, traveling from lake to lake or ocean to ocean etc….it’s pretty awesome and unique how you can mostly fish the same lake from the shore and display how knowledgeable you are about fishing different baits and conditions and techniques while keeping it entertaining. Love what you’re doing on this channel - its quickly become one of my favorites. From, an angler of over 30 years.
Thanks!
Thank You!
Nicely done Alex. Seeing your results makes me want to use a fly rod again. Thank you for all the content and keep it realistic.
I started this video out and thought, he made the right decision with the red and black but then the slab you was pulling in with big fuzzy were awesome. Great video Alex.
Fly flishing? Why not! Always appreciate the no-frills quality content you put out, Alex. KIR.
I was raised from time I was a little boy to fly fish for Bluegill. I'm 70 now. Still love it.
A different approach much slower fishing,it took me a few viewings of this video to appreciate the pleasure of throwing a line out with a fly simple but effective. Beautiful catches, peaceful slower times on the waters edge. Thank you sir.
Man I've become addicted to your videos lately. Nothing like just watchin the real thing. Keep it up man!
Love Blue Gill Fishing. Tempted to try fly fishing myself. Keep it Realistic!
Very good fishing, this place is fantastic has many big fish, Congratulations you are a very successful fisherman.👍🎣🥰👏👏
A hug and good fishing always!
Ain't nothing wrong with adding some new tools to the tool belt. I'm usually using a spinning rod, but have been learning Tenkara fishing since I am finding myself around a lot of high mountain creeks as of late. The more tools you have, the more places you can fish. Keep up the learning.
Tenkara... Cane Pole?
@@RealisticFishingpretty much, just a lot lighter and has the action of a fly rod
I think it's great that you just dare to go there, the result is convincing!! Best regards from Germany!!
You made fly fishing look so easy. I have never fly fished but it does look like fun. It looked like non stop action. Thanks for the video. KiR
So glad to see these videos. Love fly fishing when you have the room to do it. I have lost more flies in the trees behind me than I probably should admit.
"Bush trout" are always in good supply! 😂
Dude!! This is amazing and not crazy hard, it seems. Thanks for sharing!
That is so cool, I only tried fly fishing once when I was like 16 years old. Glad you got some fish!
That lake sure has some nice bluegill. Thanks for another great video.
Nice job Alex for only your 2nd time to Fly fish. keep it up I love watching you Fly Fish!!
Love this. All my biggest Bluegill catches were done flyfishing.I don't know why but they always seemed to like the bugs.Great video.
Good choice, the Red & Black's been winning a lot lately in TN 😁
Baring the fact that panfish aren’t picky, excellent choice of fly (black ant toast)you picked because that same fly will also catch creek chub on moving water. I was more than a bit surprised to see fish chase after your Mudlers Minnow (bid bristly fly) because there’s too much silt on my home waters to find success using that one. A pooper/dropper combo works well for both bass and panfish if you like to get even more adventurous. 😇
Not being a fly fisherman, I really enjoyed that! Tight Lines!
Even the really big flys are tiny compared to our normal bait standards ... I have no idea what size means with fly fishing, but IK all the fish we'd catch from smallest to biggest can swallow the whole size-range of those flys. Another awesome video, really enjoy seeing you branch out, and thanks to that awesome subscriber who sent you this rig.
Another excellent upload. You are a true angler. Tight lines!
Nice bluegill dude. Really cool to see you out there trying something new.
ive only gone fly fishing twice before both of which last year. slayed the bluegill and the second time caught a bass. I enjoyed it for sure
Panfish on the fly is a blast! Some nice ones you caught there dude
That was awesome Alex! That looks like it would be a lot of fun. Kudos to you sir! KIR
Always nice to catch a mess of bluegills. I'm ready to hit the water again. Definitely nice to catch the jumbo ones.
Cool fly action Alex. Good stuff. Fun to watch
Haven't fly fish in awhile but great seeing you do it! Caught my first catfish and large mouth on the fly last summer. Hooked for life!
Nice job Alex! Great lookin Bluegills
Awesome day fishing with fly rod, nice bluegills.
Excellent size on those bluegills! They liked that bigger muddler minnow.
Thanks Alex
You're doing pretty well with the flies you have, but if you are looking for a different type, I used to use one that floated and had a popping action. It had a flat nose on it, I think it was made of wood. It was fun to see fish hit on it. I used mostly yellow or white. It's been a long time since I have done any fly fishing, but I would think they still make that type of fly. Fly fishing is definitely an art and you seem to be picking it up pretty quick and doing really well with it!
I love fly fishing for blue gill its just so much fun!
Cool more fly fishing have wanted to try myself. good fish you catch. nice job
Nice fishes! Thanks for the video! I love fishing with a popper (floating) fly behind a bobber on a spinning outfit. It's a fun way to catch fish and larger Sunfish are the only ones that can bite. KIR-istic!
The wife and I taught ourselves to fly fish at a dry cabin in Alaska for grayling after we got dropped at a dry cabin for a few days. We were supposed to be salmon fishing, but the season got closed a few weeks before we went for the drainage we were at. So we made the best of it! It's fun!
That looks so much fun I might just try and adventure in the fly fishing world 🤩
Much improvement from first time. Good job
You might need more delay after the back cast to allow the line to straighten out behind you before the forward cast. Helps to watch your back cast unfurl. Should get more distance with less effort and fatigue. For big bass bugs I use 8wt Orvis Bank Shot line which has a weight forward shooting head that casts farther with only 1/4th the amount of false casts, especially helpful when flyrodding from a kayak when it otherwise feels like you are casting uphill.
I caught the light post behind me, so I got nervous about having more line out
@@RealisticFishing Ha ha ha Try fishing the tight mountain streams in the smokies. You will be backcasting with 2 ft of clearance. Once you learn where the line lands, you will have great control. You have a much heavier line and leader than my 3wt, but Im not going for anything more than 10in bow or brookies.
@@RealisticFishing In situations where trees behind prevent back casting, you can roll cast. Slowly bring the high rod tip back to form some slack behind your back and then quickly thrust forward with the rod tip causing a big roll in the line to shoot forward. Also, besides leader/tippet abrasion, you can get wind knots (overhand knots that weaken the mono and can cause break offs).
Thanks I've been requesting this for a while
I have one other fly video from about 2 weeks ago 👍
Good weekend Alex ☺️
Great channel, my friend. Just got into fly fishing myself. And what helped me was watching a series from Mad River Outfitters TH-cam channel. They have a complete series on how to cast. I learned a lot.
Anyway, just wanted to drop a line and let you know how much I like the channel. Keep up the great work. Tight lines and keep it realistic. Peace.
Awesome! Both times with the fly rod you caught some quality blue gills. It would be cool to see a gulp minnow or worm spinning rod vs fly rod panfish challenge in the future.
Just remember, it's easier to twitch that fly by stripping the fly line into you. Though, twitching the rod is a good method as well, especially for larger baits (like streamers). You'll relax a bit more when you are stripping the line in and wont get as tired as well. :)
Love the bluegill catch! Makes me want to get out and do some fly fishing!
The whipping sound is likely from doing the forward cast too soon. Probably need to wait a little longer on the back cast before you flick it forward. In any case, you'll catch on!
Cool to see you doing a bit a fly fishing. I’ve been getting into it myself. I even got a pair of waders to really get into the water and explore my local rivers.
A bit different from fishing from the shore for bass at a lake for sure but I’m enjoying it.
Plus I don’t have to worry as much about other people or boats launching
Good morning my friend happy fishing Saturday I always enjoy seeing your fishing videos 👍🏼🤘🏼 I have never fly fish it looks like fun I just love and enjoy pier fishing because I don't need a fishing license to fish at my local piers out here in California I hope to get my fishing license so I can fish in different places
Sunnys on the fly are super fun
That was a cool video I've been interested in trying fly fishing.
I recommend finding an old copy of "Fly Rodding for Bass" by A.D. Livingston. In grade school, I read it over and over again. Only thing that is outdated is the fiberglass vs. bamboo rod discussion. Carbon fiber has made fly rodding 100% better. I also recommend 8wt Orvis Bank Shot shooting line for far fewer false casts resulting in more distance and less fatigue when using big bass bugs and poppers.
Try a small sponge spider or a small popper fly. Black n Red wolf pack in the hiz-ouse! 🤘
getting good at the fly fishing
Another nice fly fishing video
Nice job on the fly rod, you're inspiring me to take mine off the non active list for a spin. I bet pretty soon you'll be putting some bass poppers on that fly rod.
Fly fishing is all the craze in my place, I might try it sometime but usually the rigs can get kinda pricy, and not sure exactly how to reel in and throw. So leaves me hesitant, but it's great you're catching some good fish with it man, congrats. 👍
This looks so fun
pam cooking spray works to keep dry flys floating and is cheaper than dry fly oils just an idea
The tug is the drug!
Looking to try fly fishing soon. Nice fish.
Hey Alex I've even used a small hook and a 1 inch Gulp minnow on my fly rod. The only trouble I've had learning to fly fish is getting the flies to float after they get wet. I bought some spray but it didn't work well. Great vid and those were some nice bluegill. They put up a really good fight for there size. 👍👊
I’m always amazed at the devision of fly fishing and the other types of fishing and god forbid if you mix the two. I’ve used lures on a fly rig, fly’s on a spinning rig, what ever catches the fish right?
I know a cool fly fisherman. I've met many that are fairly elitist, and they get my psychic middle finger when I'm on the water.
How big of a lure on the fly rod?
Small spoons like Dick Knights, tubes and small lead head feather jigs.
First time I see someone fly fish for bluegills 😄
🥉 you must have missed my previous video about it
@@RealisticFishing I did. Usually watch all of it. Not the last one
Alex, you should invite one of your wrestler friends fishing...I'd love to see him land a 5 pound bass, look in the camera and say keep it realistic...DAMN! 😀
That. Was awesome. KIR y’all!
KIR!
Some nice chunks.
Another great video 👍
👍for a change of technique
Hopefully if you still fly fish in the near future, try using it when the trout are biting again. They love those fly lures!
I might try it, but to have enough room I will have to walk out into the stream
Flying Realistic! 🙌
Keep your rod tip between 10 and 2 o’clock, and hesitate a second on your back cast (that allows the line to straighten out and avoid “”whipping “ your line) - you’ll save yourself a lot of extra casts. 👍
How will the line get out there if the rod never goes past 2 o clock?
@@RealisticFishing once the line shoots out, lower rod to3 o’clock and you’re ready to retrieve -it will work, but takes practice !
@@RealisticFishing The line actually does the work and the weight carries it. After awhile you will be able to lay a fly down exactly where you wanted it with minimal effort. Try thinking of the line as an extension of the rod.
The bristle head fly is a Muddler Minnow.Depending on the size of the I've everything from Bluegill to a 5lb.bass.I've also caught a 26 inch Brown trout on it once.
Casting is looking better. Some nice jumbo ones.
You seem to have the rhythm. I'll have to try fly rods at some point...
DOBAR video,puno pozdrava iz Srbije
I originally made a comment about holding you rod lower, but you got that down pretty quick. For bass try small poppers. The LOVE them.
Someone else told me to hold it at 2 o'clock. So many people with different advice makes it confusing
Nice to see ya do something a little different...not my cup of tea but fun to watch you catch them...KIR
Nice haul
Nice job love your videos I'll give you a laugh and went last Saturday and got a couple bluegills I got a bass I thought it was a keeper DNR showed up it was an inch and a half too short I had to put it back LOL
Luckily you didn't get in more trouble
The fly is a bluegill catching machine. You could do a showdown between the gulp minnow and the fly.
Great vid!!!
You are turning into quite the fly fisherman
Nice fish
Technically you can use any lure you want with a fly set up. All you have to do is strip off as much line as you'll need for the cast, bring the rod back, and then when you bring It forward just let the line shoot through the guides.
It feels like any lure over 1/16 oz will snap off on the forward cast 🥈
I had the worst morning fishing today... I tried a new bait, strawberry jello chicken breast. Didn't get a bite. I tried a new reel, round bait caster. I some how lost my tackle the first 5 casts 😑 also after it flew off I had to fix a nasty back lash. Lost like half my line fixing it so many times. I did manage to find a new spot to fish and some one left a cast net behind.
Sounds realistic to me 😅
Enjoyed video the wife bought me a brand new one hasn't made it out of the closet yet
Its an acquired taste, but I am catching fish on it 👍
Keep it realistic
Been thinking bout learning fly fishing. How's the learning curve? Some people make it look so easy
When fly fishing, match the hatch. Try to get close to whatever local insect and small animal pattern as possible such as fly gray patterns etc etc. love to see it
Mostly dragon flies out here at this time
Good night fly fishing
Are they supposed to make that much noise? I think that would start to drive me nuts after a lil while..
You can get silent reels
Nice. Catching fish on the fly is addicting. I'd do better if I dedicated myself to just fly fishing, but there are too many other fun ways to fish. The 2nd fly is a minnow imitation. That might get you a bass sometime. There are streamers that imitate black shad. Think Gulp Minnow but made out of feathers. Those will definitely get you bass.
I might try a Gulp Minnow Next Time!
