Todd Talks Over Past Events With Me

- I have shown many times that Todd will think about and plan what he wants to do later in the day and even what he wants to do the next day. But Todd will also bring up and talk about things that have happened in the past. In this video, he reminds me that we played with his Butterfly a few hours before. Then I believe he told me about the last time he asked for it, and we played with his Jingle Ball-Bird Toy. While we were playing, the string wrapped around his tail, which appears to have bothered or upset him. He told me about it then after I told him I was sorry that it had happened and I would try to make sure it didn’t happen again he brought it up again.
Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 51 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. If you would like to see more of Todd and his day-to-day life please visit his Facebook page.

His tail is super super sensitive and that experience stayed with him, and he’s smart enough to speak his mind. Todd is Very smart. ❤😺😻
He is very smart
He tries to establish that you remember the past like he does. He establishes that you not only have a theory of mind, but that you have experienced the same things he does.
He goes from a subjective realty to an objective shared reality. That is huge ;-)
I agree
🤯
Makes me wonder him using it in this way has opened different ways in his brain that would have been closed without communication like this with a human.
@@teijaflink2226 Well, I think that language and communication are necessary to get and formulate some ideas. So I think you are barking up the right idea, if I am allowed to use a dog metaphor, maybe cat scratching the right post?
It is not only that this was unpleasant for Todd but he wants it to communicate with dad. Facinating what Todd can tell with a few words in our language!
Yes, I love the way we are learning about each other.
Todd remembers the past 😊😊😊
Yes and thinks about it.
Some would definitely deny this as possible.
I love how Todd is getting better at communicating with you Dad 💙
Yes, he amazes me with how well he does
Todd must be protected at all costs ❤
😊
Kind of reminds me of when Kendra was playing fan toy with Billi and it landed on her back. She stopped right in the middle of playing and hit “back” “no”. Cats are particular in how they want to play!
Also when Kendra put catnip on her back and Billi complained about it! Cats are very particular about their fur and how they're touched. Even if you pet them the "wrong" way. My cat won't even let me touch him if I've used hand lotion in the past several hours. I think it may not necessary have to "hurt" the way we understand it. Any kind of discomfort or unpleasant sensations they are sensitive to, especially if unexpected.
Yes, I remember that. They know what they like and don't like.
I guess Todd doesnt like his tail being messed with especially with the jingle ball bird toy poor little dude ... his mind astonishes me everytime
Me too, he really does.
This is truly amazing & quite believable. reminds me of a recent video when Todd immediately answered Glamour right after Dad asked who ouched your back. Cats do have a very long memory & since they’re very sensitive to unpleasant body sensations, I do believe Todd is telling Dad about his unpleasant experience involving the tail. Great job, Todd 😻🥰
😊
Todd is giving dad riddles to solve🤩 This furball-human relationship is on another level.
I agree, we gave a very special bond
Not quite an "ouch," but still worse than being ouched by Glamour, it seems.
😊
Amazing , yes he’s telling you that bothered him lol ❤
I think so. He never acted like it at the time and kept playing. He must have been thinking about it after.
Brilliant clever .
Thank you 😊
Ok😃.
Aww sweet baby! He really didn't like that toy wrapping around his tail 😾😻
I don't think he did.
It's amazing that he clearly thinks about, and wants to communicate about, the past and the future as well as the present.
Yes, I find it amazing. He will just tell me he's going to take a nap. He'll saysleep and go to my recliner and lay down.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalksSo he narrates/announces his actions? That's so cute.
And they say animals don’t remember two minutes later!
who says that? Whoever does has obviously never had a cat. Come to some place years later, and they would immediately run to where the food bowl used to be :)
Todd still gets excited when I open a drawer where I keep the medication he loves. It was in the drawer for one week when we first adopted him, I moved it because I caught him trying to open the drawer to get at it. To this day, if I open that drawer, he runs over to look in it for his medication even though he knows it is in a filling cabinet now. He remembers and wants to make sure.
I have noticed that my cat Tilly is often reluctant to play with a toy for a few days if she's been too enthusiastic and got wrapped up in it or bumped into something while chasing. Seeing Todd's disinterest in playing with his jingle ball bird toy, I think he really was letting you know he was unhappy about the tail incident and possibly blaming the toy.
I think it bothered or upset him. Maybe it hurt, he did not act like it at the time or maybe just the idea of his tail being caught in something.
It reminds me of when Todd was giving you daily updates on his mouth. I think he remembered his tail got caught and just wanted to tell you so Dad could make sure it doesn't get caught again. I see brush coming into the conversation soon because he knows his brush helps his fur stay clear. 😻
Very possible
Oh what happened with his mouth?? Poor boo boo ❤
So interesting! And that little stretch before conversation…😻
Todd will often stretch, yawn, or groom right before talking.
This is so amazing. I wish he were not limited to the buttons. He has so much more to say. Love you Todd. I know, you have no interest in strangers on the internet.
I'd love to see Jackson Galaxy take this seriously but I think he set his mind against it, and that's too bad, because there's a whole world of knowledge about cats past the edge of what he is willing to see.
I agree Jackson Galaxy is being a little blinkered about the buttons. Considering his love for cats, I would have thought he would be more open minded and at least explore the possibility cats are more capable than he seems to gives them credit for.
I have to admit I took some convincing to begin with but when you think about it logically it's not a stretch. Cats have evolved to process a lot of information in order to survive, they have to learn and remember territorial boundaries, hunting methods for different prey, dangers ,the best places for different resources etc. It's not that strange that they are capable of learning words and associating them with objects or actions. Remembering which buttons make the right sounds is just an extension of their natural mental mapping skills.
I would love a chance to have a civil, in-depth conversation with Jackson on the subject
@@wendyrichards7458If birds can use tools to hunt why wouldn't cats use buttons to speak 😍
@@Zalvert I also wasn't too happy about his video about buttons for cats and just cherry-picking his videos, not even mentioning Billy. But I also think that it makes sense that he warns cat owners to not make the mistake into humanizing your cat and interpreting too much into the button presses. Especially if you are not an experienced cat owner. Sometimes I think we spin too many stories of our own into these button presses, but on the other hand I don't believe they are random and I do believe Billy or Todd are communicating with them. There is much to be explored about button communication.
Todd never ceases to amaze me 😍
Thank you, me as well.
This may be 'out of left field' but... We'll go with it anyway. A NDE (near death experience) video came up on 'recommendation', my wife decided to watch it and it spoke of humans doing a life review when they pass over, but that it contains the added extras of how our words/deeds are experienced from the other party's side too, so we understand more fully.
Then came the interesting part which my wife feels directly pertains to Todd.
As a baby, at crawling age, the NDE'er had reached out for and pulled the cat's tail. She experienced it as the cat did, through a tail she didn't have. Severest, agonising nerve pain, all over and through, especially down the cat's back and all into their tail and along it. It is an extension of their spine. The lady explained it from feeling all the cat experienced from her innocent actions, beyond a time she could remember. She cried at the devastating injury she'd caused the screaming cat, who did not hurt the baby, and was thankfully rescued in moments from the torture. It was deemed she wasn't to remain but had to go back and complete her life here, after an accident caused her to pass for a few minutes.
Based upon that explanation from a cat's view alone, it's so easy to understand Todd bringing this up.
Only Dad will know how long the tangle around Todd's tail was for, it may have been mere seconds but Todd may have had pain because of it, even minor pain for a second. Or not, it may just seriously have 'freaked him out'.
Todd knows humans don't have tails, and seems to want to make you fully aware that it's concerning him, a lot. Fear of injury to his tail, part of his spine, may make Todd hesitant to play string games with you, if tail danger is involved in future. He's thought about it, of course knows it was unintended, loves you clearly, but still needs to let you know for certain this is of major concern to him. And thanks to the buttons, he can figure out how to. Quite honestly, once you're over the shock of talking buttons, and cats using them, none of this is really 'left field' at all :)
One for a convo with Jackson Galaxy for interest - maybe! (?)
What wonderful white Woolly Pantaloons (loved that video) and matching Musketeer ruffled bib 'shirt' Todd has, to go with his Magnificent, luxuriant, precious Tail. No fears of matting starting up, he can request a brush any time and does. Those buttons are worth their weight in gold for a cat in a non easy-care coat!
Thank you for sharing Todd with us, love and best wishes to you and your entire family, both biped and quadruped!
🤵♀🤵♂🐱🏆🎀❤
I hope Dad sees this!
It was on his tail, probably 5 seconds, and came off on its own before I could reach down to help him. It did not appear he was in pain, or I would have checked him out. I looked at his tail and back after he said it the second and time and showed no discomfort during the exam. It may have hurt, I don't know or may have just upset him. I told him I was sorry it happened and would try and make sure it doesn't happen again.
Oh no, I pull up on the base of my cats’ tails when I have to see if they have dirty butts and they don’t want to cooperate 😱
@@kristinazubic9669 have you tried petting at the base of the tail? many cats will lift their hind ends then
@@w1975b yes, hard to do when they’re running 🤣 but I won’t yank on their tails any more!!
Just such a lovely conversation! My Lia is 5 and I wonder if she could learn…
I believe Billi was 12 when she started.
Billi started when she was 11 😊
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks funny, we must have written that simultaneously 😊
I'm just going to confirm what meme said; Billi was 11!
Todd is 6 years old. Maybe 5 is a perfect time for Lia. 🙂
Todd was being really reflective, we all get that way .. thinking of past wrongs done to us. Imagine all the things our animals think about from the past they were not happy about and we just dont know it.
I agree, the buttons are a wonder aid. I also wonder about all he wants to tell me he doesn't have words for yet.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks he might talk your ear off if you add more ,lol
Just like a human he wants some attention when something bothered or scare him>>smart kitty
I agree
Clearly it was a tail jingle ball bird toy moment that Todd recalls and perhaps he's making conversation about it bcos he wants the toys but not the tangled tail?❤
Possibly
To be fair, if I had a jingle ball and a bird toy stuck to my tail, I'd probably have a lot to say about it, too! 😱🤬😆
Exactly
Dad, you need to write a book 😸
😊
These videos are delightful. Just checking...his tail is OK, and there isn't some unnoticeable injury?
No, I looked at it after he said it again the second time. It felt fine, and he did not appear it was sensitive to me touching it.
So interesting! Some words instantly make sense to Dad and some are so puzzling when Todd makes a new construction and wonders why Dad doesn’t understand plain English buttons! LOL.
I get why Todd maybe upset that his fun new combo toy had a real downside and he really really did not expect his tail would get caught. Bummer. It is great that Todd can share his troubles with the buttons, otherwise you would never know why he may now shy away from jingleball bird toy.
Take your time on your new system! We will be excited to have more bells and whistles!
Thank you
TODD NEVER FORGOT THAT EPISODE
No he didn't
That is just astounding; it really must have bothered him and who else would he tell but Dad? I bet Glaamour already knew. 🤭
Lol
I love when he does backfoot presses, looks so elegant. Todd sure has good memory, the tail thing must have really scared him, good he was able to talk about it, hope Todd getting some talk therapy helped.
Thank you, and I think it does help him.
I keep wondering if having a language allows him to order thoughts like he wouldn’t be able to otherwise. He can comprehend his memories not just as whatever memory-replay system cats utilize, but as a (short)train of articulated thoughts.
Possibly
Tail-Jingle Ball-Bird Toy-Oops??
He doesn't have Oops yet
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks Well, all I can say about that is "OOPS!" LOL
I just 💕 love Tosd!
Thank you 😊
It's so fascinating watching his mind work. We are still not in the training phase, remodeling a rental property, but I did put a window button in front of the window my cat loves to sit in, mostly to get her use to seeing the buttons. I do push the button and say window several times when she indicates she wants the window open. We have had several hits, we aren't sure yet if they are intentional but we immediately reinforce window and push the button before we open it. Hoping this is a good sign.
It sounds like you are on the right track. Getting them to acknowledge and push a button is the biggest step imo.
Its not often you break the 4th wall to communicate directly with us, so the tail incident must have been very upsetting for Todd. Plus, he's commenting on something you both remember happening which reassures him you are in his reality, I think. I imagine he just wants reassurance that the tail incident did happen, but its in the past so it can't hurt or embarrass him any more. I think he is asking for confirmation that BEFORE is in the past and is no longer threatening.
I think it was sticking in his mind like the glamour swiping incident, he gotta get it out!
@@Tyrrituil I'm just glad that he can communicate about what's bothering him.
Very possible, good observations
Todd is at it again, amazing us! Todd shows us cats plan for the future, and they do think about their past. This is fascinating! I was thinking the other day, how did you teach him the word happy? And now, I have to inquire, how did you teach him the word, before? His understanding of abstract words is amazing! And congrats on the new camera. Good luck on learning the new features. 😺
Todd and I have a very strong bond, and we can read each other well. When I was sure he was happy (new toy he liked, being brushed, floor time, etc. ) I would tell him Todd happy. The same when we were doing something and I was happy, I would tell him Dad happy. Before was harder. He would ask for cuddles after a brushing, and before I brushed him, I would press before brush now cuddles, etc. Over time, he was able to figure out the consistent thing that was what I said before to have already happened. Before was one of the words, it took quite a while to understand.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks wow great job on teaching him! That is brilliant, and great job on Todd's part on learning. That is brilliant as well! You both are teaching us greater depths of cats that we couldn't know without this communication! Thank you from the heart! 😺
Todd's becoming very communicative about his thoughts... I wonder if he will move on to describing his dreams? (That is, if he hasn't been trying already).
I wonder how dad could go about providing a "dream" button and successfully train Todd to understand that word/concept???
There is no way I can think of to explain a dream to him.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks yeah that is a tricky one, for sure.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalkscould "dream" be "sleep look"? Just tossing that out there.
Before...jingle ball-bird toy...tail...ouch...oops! (Does Todd have an "oops" button?)
No, he does not have an oops button yet
Who is Training who, today?
What exactly do you think communication is? :)
🤨
Wow, do you think his tail is a bit sore from that? If it pulled, maybe at the base of the tail it hurts? Gosh, he is so smart.
I didn't think so but it may ne
Aw... :-( Maybe it ouched his tail a little when it happened.
Dad, maybe you could ask Todd "tail ouch hmm?"
It may have, although he did not act like it at the time. I did ask him while I examined it after the second time he brought it up. He did not reply.
It could have tugged his fur a bit, enough to hurt a bit but not pull any out. Maybe it just startled him, though. Either way, I guess he wanted to make sure you were aware to try your avoid it another time.
Could it be Todd is inventing again? I think he wants you to tie jingle ball bird toy to his tail. He isn't using "before" here. He is using the same syntax he used with his other toy inventions.
I do not think he wants that at all, I think he was telling me he was concerned about it.
I just bought six buttons (fluent kit) for my 17 year old girl. She has CKD, but already knows at least 10-15 simple words and phrases. I hope she can learn. Wondering what words to start with and how many.
Would love to see/hear how you started out with Todd and how you were able to teach him concepts like time and emotions like mad and love you.
That is great! I would start with a favorite non-food activity or toy. Show her the button and press it then give her the item. Keep working with her that way. Time is just by modeling. When we would go upstairs in the morning I would tell he Now Morning. He would ask for a toy I would say Yes, you may have Morning toy. And the same thing for afternoon and evening. over time he made the connection to the time of day. Soon means, for us, 15 minutes or less and later is 15 minutes or longer. I would only do 1 or 2 words at a time.
Todd is a very special boy. I set up his board and he was very curious about it. I tapped a button and said this is for you guys, they are buttons. He looked at it and touched it with his paw. I got very excited I got him to acknowledge a button before I finished setting up his board. I then pushed the button and it said bird toy, his favorite toy at the time. His eye lit up when he heard it say his favorite toy. I then played with him with the toy. We did it again. I put the toy down and went to pull the video of him acknowledging the button and he pressed bird toy. He was using his board all the time after that. It was 10 minutes from the time I showed him the button until his first press. This is not typical.
Maybe he thought the tail thing was funny somehow? Not sure cats understand funny though. Definitely understand annoyance and can sulk for a bit, so that is more likely.
By how serious he was looking at me I don't think that was the case. He looks excited and joyful when he asks for toys to be made and happy things.
Have you checked his tail, to make sure the "jingleball-birdToy" has not cut him, or strained his tail?
I feel like you are in tune with Todd so much that if you ask him and start touch his tail and ask him "show me" or something similar he will guide you to the spot bothering him...
Or
Maybe he enjoyed the jingball-Birdtoy tail interaction?
(Only thinking that, because ive watched quite a few cute videos of adult cats using thier own tail as a toy of sorts for other cats, and also needing to mock fight about it??)
I enjoy your channel, kind and thoughtful personality and cats.
Thank you.
I have checked his tail, and it seems to be fine. He had no comment when I asked him if his tail ouched, but I do not think that he liked it on his tail by the way he looked when he was telling me about it.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks so freaking amazing to be able to communicate complex ideas like that with a cat!
Maybe tell him sorry oops tail ouch by jingle ball bird Toy…dad help make no more oops no more ouch tail! So sorry! Dad sorry! (Use buttons if possible to say this).
I did tell him all of that
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks I heard you tell him you were sorry but not the rest. And not with the buttons but no matter, that’s all I was saying to use the buttons, a repetitive modeling trick. Your doing a good job didn’t mean it to as a criticism, more to be in a conversation using the buttons with him.
Did he react like he didn't like it when it happened? Could it be that it was the opposite? He liked it and wanted to repeat it? (Seems unlikely, cats don't usually like when sth happens to their tail, but can we eliminate that?)
His tail looked fine and he did not act like it bothered him at the time. I really don't think he wants me to wrap it around his tail.
How long ago was that could it be that the tail still is sore?
I think it was two or three days.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks hmm not too long. I wonder if things just come up? I had one of my cats the other day who sleeps on me suddenly start awake and with a huge meow took a flying leap off the bed to go eat cute kitty food. I was like what was she dreaming? 😂. So I don’t know maybe something reminded him of it? Is it still very interesting regardless.
Could possebly have awched him a littel and he is letting you know not to do that agen
It is possible, he did not act like it at the time.
