Are These Just Random Words? - Todd Can Haz Language Pt. 2

  • This is part two of a multi-part series looking into whether Todd truly understands what he is saying or is this all just a “Push and Reward System” as some say.
This week we will look into Todd using words in ways I have not taught him how to do. I only teach Todd single words/concepts, and he puts them together. I believe that he is showing a true understanding of the words and concepts behind them and the ability to combine them to accurately express ideas, thoughts, and feelings he did not have words for at the time.
Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 51 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. If you would like to see more of Todd and his day-to-day life please visit his Facebook page.

It's such a poignant gesture for the jingle ball that is no more, lingering over and touching the button without activating it. It seems indicative that Todd the cat is capable not only of language and strong emotion but of symbolism as well. As Todd gazes mournfully down and then at the camera, I can hear taps and the 21 gun salute sounding.

The thing Todd can’t do like toddlers can is babble experimental or approximate sounds that he can refine with feedback. Unless “no”/know?
I also think Todd knows exactly what he wants to express here. It’s literally awe-inspiring to see how purposeful and persistent he is.

A short story. - The first cat we had when I was a child was called Mille. At the time, we were living on an island, and made weekly boat trips to town- being absent from morning to late afternoon. Mille was still young, should I say still a kitten, not grown up size, spending time both inside and outside (no cars on the island.) Once we could not find him anywhere when we were leaving for the town trip. - So we had to leave anyway. Normally we would had put him inside for those days. - So, off we went. We entered the boat, and the 1 hr journey to the town started.
It took like 20 minutes, before Mille suddenly appeared from under one tarpaulin on the boat. He had been there hiding, and did not make any movement or noise, when we three came aboard. Quite an interesting feat for a young cat to do!
    - Ok. We had one small cat with us, without a collar or cage or anything.... The only thing we could do, was to put him inside the front cabin for the time we had to take for shopping etc. But that part of the boat could not be completely sealed, there was a small opening behind the rudder wheel.
Ok. Cat into the cabin, and the only thing we could hope, was for him to stay there. As an island kitten, he had never been to town, seen the traffic, or anything like that.... Fingers crossed....
After a few hours we came back to the boat. Instantly we spotted Mille on the open deck area. But he was ON the boat, and very happy to see us again. And we all sailed happily back home. Never again, had Mille any interest for our trips to town, or much for the boat either. - What we cannot know, is if he had taken a sightseeing tour in the town or not. If he had, it seems like one time was enough.
I think he had wondered where we three went every week, leaving him behind.... After this trip he knew, and it seemed to be ok with him ever since.

Todd constantly shows that he is purposeful in his button pressing. He checks to make sure you have heard him. He doesn't only ask for things for himself; he asks for things for Paulie and Glamour, too.
I am amazed by cats that make the effort to use our language to discuss their day, their feelings, their wants, future plans and past activities. I have no doubt that they know what they are saying.

My first thought re: repeated “want what” & “want hmm?” was that he might want new words. He’s such a curious and intelligent kitty and is already so good at inventing new toys and combining the words he does have to express himself in the best way he can. It seems to me like he thrives on new, interesting challenges.

I can not fathom how someone can think there is no thought going on inTodds mind that he needs to express.
He expresses things to make other cats happy.
He has a theory of mind, he knows what you don't know and tells you.
If you take Todd and other button talking cats together, there can not be any doubt.
They know what they say, and have a very active mind.
They even have a desire to express stuff, even if they do not get a reward.
Gossiping might not be a high form of communication for humans, but for cats it shows that communication is something that satisfies and eunderlying desire.
And that can only be produced by an active mind.

When Todd kept saying Want What and Want Hmm, then for a moment I thought that maybe he was wondering what Dad wants (never seen a cat ask their human what they want but I wouldn't think of it as something impossible because cats are smarter than they look and are given credit for). And I've never seen a cat look so sad and heartbroken like Todd was after the jingle ball incident, it just made me want to reach out through the screen and comfort him. My mini panther (a beginner button user) has a similar ball but for him it has to be pink or he won't play with it, so that kind of got me thinking that maybe cats have favorite colors. I know that they don't see colors like we do but seeing Todd only liking a certain colored ball and my mini panther only playing with pink toys, then it could be a possibility. Just as I am writing this comment, he said "Play Ball" and brought me his pink ball (he plays fetch).

For me as soon as they combine their words to communicate a new concept, it shows they are not just pressing buttons for a reward. He is a clever boy. As a speech pathologist who works with nonspeaking people, I can conjecture that Todd, having learned that communication is possible, wants a more robust vocabulary. Everything we as people know was in fact taught to us with the same system of repetition and rewards and punishments, we were taught to seek the reward by being good boys and girls and fearing the punishments, but look at us all grown up into self domesticating animals using words n stuff😂 sure maybe when learning something new, the reward was the objective but Todd is like a toddler who is just learning to use words to express his thoughts and what reward he'd like to have🐭 if you tell him yes it is morning😁 also who ouches his back and when he has a booboo or wants to build a toy.. Todd definitely understands what he is thinking and expressing.. You can see him look over the board and choose words and then looks to you to see if you have received his message and will reply.. Animals may not have voices but they do have consciousness and I don't care what anyone says otherwise.. if it was about the treats he'd ignore the rest of the words and only ask for treats.. Anyone that has a brain can see that when your animal looks at you, their little minds are clearly sending you messages just with those eyes ❤ And cats are magical creatures and smarter than they've ever been given credit for,.. Though dogs likely just want the treats but our cats have got things to say😊 Love your little cat fam and you guys never fail to make me smile ❤

Why not create a “lead me” or “show me” button? Once you train him on the concept of leading/following you can then move on to “dad lead Todd jingle ball” then “Todd lead dad jingle ball”. You could even pick him up and carry him to where his eyes are looking until he brings you to the object or thing he wants or is thinking about. Cats tend to do this naturally without buttons, so it falls in line with their natural behavior and should be fairly simple to teach.

Honestly, he might be asking you what you want. I might go over and push: "Dad want food" and then eat. Basically, he might be looking for more participation from you in terms of telling him what you want. This would be highly interesting as even cats like Billi didn't typically ask for what others want. I'd see how he responds. If he asks it again, I'd tell him something new and then go do that.
ALlo "Bye" "no" is an incredible way to express displeasure at your business trips. Maybe Todd should get a proper button to communicate your trips? This seams frequent enough to make it meaningful. For example, "dad" "bye" "soon" and "dad" "trip" "later". Something specific to your trips would really help Todd to understand when you are leaving, and allow him to ask if you are leaving for a trip.
This could also allow a great opening to segway into time. Once this is mastered, you could offer more than "soon" and "later." Maybe Tood is capable of some rudimentary counting. Nothing like that has ever been attempted in the buttons so who knows.

Could he be using a homophone? Want Dad KNOW?
He wants to know how to say something? He hasn’t got the word?
Or “Want bye no” he seems to be thinking about you leaving. Maybe he’s wondering if you will soon again. Or wondering why you do. (Dogs can see being left alone as rejection/punishment. Cats…who knows?
When I was in a country I had not been able to get so much as a dictionary for, in a region where few spoke any languages I knew, the most powerful thing I could do was get from an English speaker the phrases, “What’s this/that?” “How do I say?” And “what’s the word for?”
    Babies do two
    - they use a word for one thing as a class (No, that’s not a doggie, it’s a cow.) That’s how they expand their vocabulary. Sometimes they use a word more randomly, just to test what reaction they get. (Like using a curse word because they notice it got a reaction.) It helps them refine their understanding of the word too.
    - or they make a sound that seems a bit like a word they have heard - with or without pointing - and the adults guess it from context (not always correctly) and model the pronunciation.
    “BAING!”
“Oh, you want some bacon? Bacon?
Imagine being a baby but not being able to babble, to make a sound that’s a bit like what you want to say.
I wonder if anybody has bought a hundred buttons and plonked them all down right away at the start, and let their pet just babble?

I like the idea of getting a bunch of buttons and just letting a cat babble. Kind of cute, and very experimental. Have a trial period or something. Who knows? Maybe someone will try it. Also, yay Todd. Keep up the good work. I'm totally blind, and cannot see what's happening, or read anything like captions, and it can kind of be tricky to follow what's happening, but it's always been obvious to me he's understanding, and using words. I know if I had buttons around the house with commonly used words, my cats would understand. They know a variety of phrases and words.

I'm new to this channel, does he have know as well as no?
Like when you say 'Oh, I know, I know', or
    'No, not now, later'.
He wanted you to know something.
And if he can tell the difference between the two words, or is using that word to say a different meaning, then he absolutely amazing. He
might well have been saying he wanted new words, to tell you like you say for example, a new toy❤ So impressed with Todd.

@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalksit's even difficult to explain "tomorrow" to very young human children. Someone came up with the idea of counting "sleeps" to make time concrete to children, e.g. "Santa will come in 5 sleeps," meaning 5 nights. If we're saying something will happen tomorrow, we say "In one sleep." But that won't work for cats, I'm pretty sure, being that they sleep more than human children do.
