Ideale (Tosti) : Enrico Caruso, John McCormack, Jussi Bjorling (New restorations)

  • These are my personal three favourites of the great tenors of the past singing Tosti's lovely song Ideale. The recordings are as follows
    0:00 Enrico Caruso 30th Dec 1906.
    3:27 John McCormack 1909
    6:59 Jussi Bjorling 5th Sept 1937
10:24 Just the last few bars of the three merged together as a trio.
I have tried to improve the general audio quality and just for effect, to disguise noise and give a smooth transition between tracks I have added applause.
The song translates to English as-
I followed you like a rainbow of peace
    along the paths of heaven;
I followed you like a friendly torch
    in the veil of darkness,
and I sensed you in the light, in the air,
    in the perfume of flowers,
and the solitary room was full
of you and of your radiance.
Absorbed by you, I dreamed a long time
of the sound of your voice,
and earth's every anxiety, every torment
    I forgot in that dream.
Come back, dear ideal, for an instant
    to smile at me again,
and in your face will shine for me
    a new dawn.

I've uploaded quite a few of his recordings and another that you might like to listen to that perfectly demonstrates his skills and by which he said that he would be happy for his reputation as a singer to stand or fall is of the Mozart aria Il Mio Tesoro. @@michaelmcgrailengland True, and the age of the recording and the singer both, must be considered of course Acoustic versus Electric etc. , an old Caruso record, compared to a 1930's electric isn't always a completely fair and even playing field, but we can always also consider a singer for the way he sings it, emotion Etc. and as a polished musician, which is another aspect of his singing, so that all plays into it for me, it isn't just the voice alone, that is for me anyhow.

Firstly it's FP Tosti ... the song is otherworldly and musically phenomenal ... and the words are fantastic... it's just brilliant and beautiful.
The interpretations: Caruso 1, Bjorling 2, McCormack close at 3 ... each one is fabulous.... Caruso's voice has such incredible chiaro scurro and emotion ... it's a masterpiece ... the lower register is rich and dark , the middle full and strong tenoric, and the top is heroically tenor ... when Caruso sings the last line: torna caro ideale, torna, torna... his voice effortlessly softly goes into the vocal stratosphere and the higher it goes up to a B, I think B ... it almost sounds like his voice is miraculously descending as it in fact ascends ... it's a masterpiece of bel canto singing ... in my opinion.
Bjorling has fantastic tenoric quality... less color in the lower register than EC and not sure what he's singing at the end ... "as written" I'd say ... beautiful bel canto ... he mispronounces the word "Ideale" .... that's a plus for Caruso... it's EC's native language.
And McCormack ... beautiful lite lovely tenor ... effortlessly floating up to the high note and every other note.
I'd be happy listening to this and only this recording everyday for the remainder of my time here and be quite content.... thanks so much.

@@michaelmcgrailengland, Caruso's voice has been changing over the years. You can hear that listening his O Paradiso (1906), La donna a mobile (1907) and Vesti la giubba (1908). While recordings made in 1903 up to 1905 showed his lyric color. After 1908, his voice became strictly dramatic. Probably due to heavy smoking... Also, his voice was not as high as other tenors. Some expressed opinion he should be a baritone. It has taken at least four or even Five years to master his high C. He rarely used it however.

Both Caruso and McCormack are splendid, having heard Bjorling in Opera and my grandfather having sung in Opera with them all. I will take my opinion of my grandfather, who apart from singing with them also wrote notes and essays on the singers he knew saw and sung with all his life, being born in 1879 he died at 98 in 1977 his last performance he saw was a Pavarotti Nemorino.
It is also an interesting fact that Caruso when he visited Adelina Patti at her home in Craig y Nos Cwmtawe in the early 1900's sang this with Landon Ronald on the piano, with a small audience of Miners from a Coal mine at Ystradgynlais, who were part of a Cor Meibion ( Male Voice Choir ) and were also guests of Madame Patti, oh I would loved to have heard that.
His opinion on Caruso was that he was simply Unique, Range colours shadings dynamics he had everything, but his voice was Large and it would become larger as it left his body, he was able to sing Mozart which he did with Success in London, McCormack certainly sung Mozart but he was not able to match Caruso in Floridity in Don Giovanni at that time in the 1900's there were many great Mozart tenors Russian Smirnov was a great Mozart in any Language , so to was the Heldentenor Heinrich Knote and Jadlowker , but he would opine that the best after Caruso in his mind better than Wittrisch or Roswaenge was the Hungarian Koloman von Pataky, whom he sang with at Covent Garden and Glyndebourne in the Thirties.
Now back to Ideale, I am going to say I like the three they are all very fine recordings, but a fact that has to be said that Caruso made all of his recording accoustically and on ONE take, that was to save money.
McCormack knew how great Caruso was and he revered his Great Friend, McCormack was no Caruso. that is for sure but a truly great likeable and lovely man and singer.
Jussi Bjoerling my Grandfather heard first on his early records and Radio from Vienna, when he came to London before the war he was looking forward to seeing him and hearing him in the flesh as to say, he was to sing Manrico in Il Trovatore, I think Aida as well, but I have not found my Grandfathers notes on that.
I can say that he was not disappointed but he had Caveats, he noted, " I have heard many Great and not so great Manrico's, I had sung the role myself with success in Nice and Lyon in 1902 " Mr Bjorling certainly has a beautiful and Italianate voice, he has not quite mastered the Language yet, but that matters not, it is a very Beautiful voice, but he was not good Histrionically and moved with the least movement possible, also the Voice was not carrying, people were complaining that he was not hearable in the Auditorium, I thought at the time that was petty, but having listened to the BBC recording a week later I could see the point, he needs to place the voice towards the auditorium, otherwise it is lost, he will learn and I am sure that will not be the last we will see or Hear of the young Mr Bjorling.
My Father had a friend who was an avid Opera Watcher and I believe he wrote for the Irish times, on opera and Concerts in London his name was Tommy O' Brien, who talked with my grandfather a lot in London in the twenties and thirties, my grandfather being of Brythonic Cymric lineage and Tommy of the Gaelic lineage they were like two lost Celtic cousins I believe.
Mr O ' Brien said he was not taken by Mr Bjorling who did not master the role as he had seen in London from Pertile or Merli who had strong voices with Carrying Power and he knew from fact that Caruso and Martinelli when they sang the role here were often noted for the Squillo at the back of the auditorium, but he was also very nervous, young maybe, but we shall see he said.
I saw him three times, two performances of Tosca and one of La Boheme, I thought he sang beautifully and was pleased with that, but I did say to my Father he was like a stick of wood on the stage very stiff, also if I remember it was Milanov who totally outsung him, that was Tosca, the La Boheme was different he was really superb, in his element I believe, that is the way I want to remember him.
So I would say Caruso having been Italian knew Songs like he knew his Barber and how to sing them with empathy and PATHOS for words and feeling. is certainly my favourite by a mile.
But equally I would say that all three are in Gods hand in Heaven that is for sure.
Diolch yn fawr ich i, Nos da.

Caruso McCormack and Bjorling share first place in my list of favourite tenors but as you say, unfortunately all Caruso's recordings and those McCormack made when his voice was at it's best, were made before electrical recording started in 1925.
Your grandfather obviously had a long and fascinating career, did he make any recordings himself?
I'll bet your father's friend Tommy O'Brien was the same Tommy O'Brien who had a weekly radio show on RTE that I listened to for several years. I think that the show was devoted to the great singers of the past.
Thanks again for listening and best wishes from Yorkshire.

This is my choice of day... Being a huge fan of Tosti‘s beautiful canzoni (he left us a very nice selection of songs with English lyrics as well), out of all the great videos presented on this channel it had to be „Ideale“... and once more Michael turned the three recordings into something special, adding his own devotion and admiration, his technical skills and his knack for the extraordinary: this time being the blending of the three marvelous voices he chose for the video.
Another extra: the translation of the lyrics into English and a pleasant amount of interesting pictures...
    Thank you very much, Michael!!!
And no, I won‘t pick my favourite recording...

Yes,my mountain climbing South Korean TH-cam friend is a very nice man.He himself is a singer and has a very good sense of humour. He has his own TH-cam channel on which he puts videos of his walks in the mountains with a background of nice classical music.
On the subject of noise, I like listening to my restorations in the car because the engine noise seems to just overshadow the recording noise and make the music stand out more.
By the way, you mentioned that you are not perfect.Don't worry about it, I'm sure that even I am not absolutely perfect. I can't just just bring my faults to mind at the moment but I'm sure they must exist!!!

Looks like I should check out your Korean friend‘s video channel... He seems a very nice and likable man indeed!
When I wrote „never mind the noise“ what I actually meant was: „You did a hell of a good job to improve the sound quality; if there‘s still a little background noise left, that‘s probably something you (and the listeners) will just have to live with, because further improvement obviously isn‘t possible...“ Something like that. For people like us who love the wonderful and great voices of the past, there won‘t be a recording with no background noise at all. If we long for „background silence“ we‘ll have to turn to... Jonas Kaufmann, which I‘m not going to do... I prefer my „oldies but goodies“ - and so do you, if I‘m not completely mistaken...
Forgetting about the few weaknesses people like you may (or may not) have, is probably one of the benefits of growing... wise...

I certainly agree with you about the oldies but goodies, my top singers basically end at Jussi Bjorling.
I liked the old music when I was young and when I started going out with my wife, who had just started in the office where I worked, one of the girls said to her "he's alright, but he likes weird music"

      @Michael McGrail
Judging by your little story (love it!), very obviously weird music is good music!!!
I fell in love with „weird music“ when I was six years old... Literally falling out of bed after a nightmare, I stumbled into our living room where my parents sat in front of the TV watching „The Great Caruso“, starring Mario Lanza. The scene presented Lanza singing „Torna a Surriento“ to a very lovely Ann Blyth, listening in awe and utter delight. That‘s probably what I looked like, too, nightmare forgotten and all... I just wanted to watch that movie! My parents gave a thumbs up when they realized there was no chance to persuade me to go back to bed (I was a stubborn child, but very easy to handle as soon as people surrendered to my superior judgement). That was the beginning of it all...
In a record store somewhere in the US I once looked for CDs by Mario Lanza. When I wasn‘t able to find any, I asked one of the sellers, a young man who looked totally lost and puzzled... I started to explain, and after a while it dawned upon him, his mouth fell open, he stared at me and said (with slight disgust): „Oh, you are looking for that long-haired stuff...“
I had never heard that term before, now I know what it stands for. Back ghen I only stared back, because he wore his hair long, and I tried to figure out whether there was a connection between my musical preferences and trendy hairstyles...
Oh dear, lengthy answer again... Please accept my (not entirely sincere) apologies!
Best regards and have a very nice day!!!

@@hrbooksmusic7878 Sorry for the late reply Harriet, and forgive me if I don't reply at all, I often get to bed and think"damn, I forgot to to do this that and the other".
That's an interesting story about Mario Lanza and long hair. I'd forgotten that classical music used to be described as something like "long haired music".
I'll bet Mario Lanza and the film The Great Caruso turned quite a few people towards Opera and classical singing, it certainly influenced me. Mind you, at that time I was more into Rock and Roll, Jazz,Irish music and Country music. And actually, nothing has changed because I still love those genres but since added music like Classical and Opera. I just love music, I don't care what sort it is, if it pleases my ear I like it.
The first tenor that took my ear was an Irish singer called Josef Locke, my parents used to listen to a weekly radio program that he had and he sang lots of the lovely old Irish ballads. He didn't do classical music but he told the story of how he once stood in for Gigli who was ill. He had to sing an Italian song that he knew the melody of but not the Italian words so he basically just mumbled unintelligible words. When he finished the audience applauded loudly.
I'll say Gute Nacht as I must get back to my weird music!!!

All 3 are outstanding, however I personally I single out Björling especially above the other two here. . During these early years his musicianship in addition to the sheer beauty of his lyric voice were unsurpassed, IMO. Gigli had that special, Italian lyric timbre but could not match Björling in artistry. The same could be said of Di Stefano a few years later.

My favorite tenors with their birth year: Enrico Caruso 1873, John McCormack 1884, Beniamino Gigli 1890, Joseph Schmidt 1904, Jussi Bjorling 1943. Since there were those who had never heard McCormack, I suspect they never heard Schmidt. For many years McCormack was my favorite, but that was before I discovered Joseph Schmidt.
The technical quality of the Bjorling recording is far above the other two. It is much more natural sounding. This is an even bigger problem for sopranos. I have tried to compare Ponselle with Tebaldi, but while I absolutely love Tebaldi, I have trouble with the technical quality of most Ponselle recordings.

    • @michaelmcgrailengland
      @michaelmcgrailengland  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for listening and for your comment Cary. The audio quality of the Caruso and McCormack recordings is poor compared to the Bjorling recording but, as you probably know, prior to 1925 there were no microphones or other electrical aids in recording studios, it was all done mechanically by the the singer singing into a horn with a needle or stylus attached to a diaphragm at the narrow end that scratched the vibrations into a soft wax disc that was then used to produce the records and you must make allowances for this. Also the orchestras used then were very basic compared to those used in the electrical era. Many of Rosa Ponselle's recordings were acoustic, made before 1925 and again the audio on those will be poor compared to Tebaldi's recordings which will all be electrical.
By the way our choice of tenors is very similar as the three who share my top spot are Caruso McCormack and Bjorling and they are very closely followed by Schmidt, Tauber and Gigli.
      Thanks again for listening.
