That knife defence is so bloody dangerous. It gives people a false sense of what they can do in a real situation.

I'm sorry to say that UKSKO (Seiki Jukyu) is not Okinawan in origin, nor is it a "traditional" form of karate, as it is based on Seido / Kyokushin. Frank Perry created this style thanks to his training with Senseis Oyama and Nakamura. The UKSKO syllabus does not include the most traditional (Okinawan) kata and its versions of kata that are taught (e.g. Sanchin) are different in execution to those taught in Okinawan Goyu Ryo (which I also have belts in). UKSKO, like all other Kyokushin derived styles, emphasises physical conditioning, semi/full contact sparring for competition and one-hit strike training for self-defence. We used to have to break bricks and go through a 50 man line-up for 1st dan grading back in the 80s (very "kyokushin") although I'm not sure those things are still done today. Frank also trained in JuJitsu, where the knife stuff comes from in the video, but that was not included in the syllabus when I trained, so I would say that has nothing to do with his karate style. IMHO, unless you have full training in JJ or another effective grappling art, if someone pulls a knife, keep your distance and use your legs (run or kick)... with diligence, purity and respect. Osu!
