Just back from storm camping. Phew! Heaviest rain in the state where i camped. Flooded my camp area. Had trouble with fire getting wet coals (from flooding) so lifted fire onto concrete platform...found on opposite side of camp area. Gusting meant noise, tarp kiting, splashing in..! Tent tarp lower. No prob. Gt learning curve.
You look so cool and relax with calm gesture while fixing the tarp with your car👍.I failed to fix tarp many times and I thought it’s the task which I cannot do alone…so far😇nice video👍
Did this yesterday out in CB just I gave my tarp to someone with no shelter so I used a rain fly from a cheap Walmart tent I bought awhile ago. Rain has been pretty crazy in the Gunnison Valley.
I like the A-frame style you used. We all have been in storms where the wind blows the rain sideways. This offers better protection than just a flat tarp.
One way to combat a torn out grommet or no attachment site on a tarp is to take a smooth rock or golf ball. Take the rock or ball and encase it with the tarp, then use a clove hitch or any other constricting knot and cinch it at the base of the ball. Voila! a new grommet
You all prolly dont care at all but does anybody know a trick to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb forgot my account password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Cristian Joaquin Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Northern Canadian @ 72 love my truck cap for camping , makes you keep only the necessary in it. I would never sleep with your head that way . Bears and your not in a protective position . Like your tarp set up thanks for sharing : > )
I'm getting a 2020 Tacoma dbl cab and really want to do something like this. Like to start going out some. Not sure at 56 but I need to start getting out and being just free from the 13 hr work days
Gees....I bet I could send you out into the woods with nothing more than a Qtip & a Pair of scissors & ask you to build me a house & you could do it?!!? 😁 LOL....Really Love It!! Thank You for sharing!! 🌻🌻💟🌻🌻
That is a good idea but I don't have a roof rack on my cap just yet. Any suggestions for a tarp shelter that would work with hiking poles and bungee hooks?
Great video man and nice set up I'm from boulder co just got me a shell on my taco and will be doing a lot of camping this summer now I know what to take with me thanks for the ideas
Looks cozy! I'd never sleep with my head at the tailgate though. Safer with head closest to the cab IMHO. Still a nice camp set-up. I was directed to your channel by Tristan of SUV RVing. Now subbed!
I have the same setup here on the east coast. It's so handy to have that storage when I'm camping and I have all my coolers and canoe on the roof. I'm going to buy the shower and awning too, that's a great idea!
Really enjoy all videos and hope you and Sierra are doing well! Got a question on this tarp; How come you didn’t guyline the two corners down as opposed to using the bungees? Just wondering
Yes, absolutely. That's my preferred method. However, the reason I posted this video is to provide an idea when trees aren't available. Thanks for watching!
I’m still stuck on the part where you said u had a broken hiking stick, are there not ant natural wood sticks out there? Love the videos man keep it up.
Hi Crickets Creations, thanks for watching! Yes, there are tons of natural sticks but the hiking poles are carbon fiber and weigh next to nothing. I just like them because they're easy to use but I will be replacing them this year. Hope your 2018 is starting off on a great note!
hows it out there in the winter with a dog? i'm coming out this winter and bringing my dog with me. gonna set up using a lot of your tips! would be awesome to link up and have you show me some spots!
Hi Dee! Sierra does really well in the snow and loves running around. Many times I have to bribe her with treats to come in from the cold because she has so much fun out there, especially when it's snowing. Yes, please get in touch with me when you are in the area. I'll gladly share some local knowledge of places to check out!
bobinmissouri Make you a frame out of pvc pipe. Then toss you a tarp over it, fit it to frame with bungee cords. Get a roll of that mylar covered bubble wrap at lowes and use that for insulation. Extend the tarp over tailgate and you will have a mud room. th-cam.com/video/Jni3E67sDsI/w-d-xo.html
Hi Mimi, I apologize for the delayed response as I just now saw your questions. This tarp is a brand called "Outdoor Products" and it's a coated tarp. I've had some people tell me the grommets rip out easily from this tarp but I've never had an issue. I love it, great tarp that is easy to work with. Here's the link to the product, I have the 7'x9' size - www.rei.com/product/842320/outdoor-products-coated-tarp
Chevy Van Travel It's worth spending extra money on a nice tarp like those from Bushcraft Outfitters USA. They have webbing loops instead of grommets that always tear out eventually. Also, I highly recommend tying taughtline hitch knots instead of using those plastic guy line adjusters. Also use small sticks as toggles whenever possible. Makes undoing or redoing your rigging faster than you would believe.
Hey Man! I am flying into Denver 8/13 and am looking for a cool area to go to. I will be driving a capable 4x4 vehicle. Ideally, I would like to find a scenic series of fire roads or ATV tracks to travel along with suitable places to camp along them. I need to stay within 2 and a half hours of Denver, and will be out for 3 days. Thanks for any tips!
What he needs to do is drive all the stakes first. He can adjust their positions later if necessary. Then bungie the back corners of the tarp to the back corner stakes, then bungie a front corner to one side of his SUV, then clamp to the roof rack, then bungie the other other front corner to the SUV and finally rig his hiking pole. That way he can hold the tarp at all times and keep it from flying around while he is putting it up.
J Vonny Try Northwestern Connecticut Logging. , powerline roads & trails. Etc. You could get lost in the woods for days . Lakes , rivers , streams/brooks & mountains everywhere . Great places to bury a body. So I've heard !
Thanks man! It was yiur video that convinced me to order my Snugtop hi-liner HD. I have a 2wd Silverado Texas Edition Crew Cab. Bed length is 5” 9’ and Im just under 6. Tried to upgrade to 4WD with extra cab but it just didn’t happen so Im gonna rock what I got brother! I will be making some vids on this channel eventually. I love the simplicity, its all about comfort and usability right? Ya lose so much space by building in cabinets etc. im thinking about how I will set mine all up. I subbed. Hope y’all will sub back and stay tuned for my story. Do you live full time or is this a weekend camper thing? Ima watch more videos! Thanks again!

Did this yesterday out in CB just I gave my tarp to someone with no shelter so I used a rain fly from a cheap Walmart tent I bought awhile ago. Rain has been pretty crazy in the Gunnison Valley.
This is great! Plan on using this weekend for a quick overnight with rain expected.

Wow nice way of making a tent

Yes, most definitely! That is a great way to create a new grommet. Good tip to share, thanks for the comment!
I learned that one from Lonnie...a great little trick
dude that tarp was so sick, so compact
Impressive! And you stayed so calm while setting up the tarp and explaining what you were doing for us! Thanks!

Would bear traps work if they are staked down real good?
Just got a new Chevy Colorado, short bed and was wondering how to fix it up, Thanks for the super great Info
Excellent video. Great tips for creating a shelter when needed. Thanks for sharing.

Rona's Roadshow ten by ten are fine bucks at Wally world
thnx handsome scout. i am in australia.
That is a good idea but I don't have a roof rack on my cap just yet. Any suggestions for a tarp shelter that would work with hiking poles and bungee hooks?
I used to do something very similar to my old 84 Subaru wagon.

Great idea.
Plot twist.. along comes a bear, buddy jumps in the driver's seat and takes off trailing his tarp behind.
Doubles as a tarp and superhero cape for the adventure truck lol
does the flapping tarp scratch the paint on your vehicle?
Awsome u been doing it for a while lol. Great video subbed
Just my thought always thought about buying cheap 4 by 8 10 cutting bottom out and Bunting back of truck

Nice setup

Could one back the truck up to one of the trees to attach the tarp to? Or am I way off base with this thought..
Yes, absolutely. That's my preferred method. However, the reason I posted this video is to provide an idea when trees aren't available. Thanks for watching!

How do you clamp to you roof rack?
Hi Jeremy, I use heavy duty clamps from the hardware store like these - www.homedepot.com/p/ANVIL-2-in-Spring-Clamp-99691/302755764

Particularly spots in and around White River would be cool
What kind of tarp is that? Looks more like a rubber or vinyl one and not like the typical one you would get at Walmart.
did you get a response i was wondering about the same thing.
mimi taylor no I did not get and answer.
Nice
I think I need to make ya a Dark wing awning like mine

Nice!
Love ur channel!!
U the man
Thanks Mike C for watching this video, have a great day. ~ Brian
I saw some big dog/coyote in the background--was that your dog or what?
Hi Janet, you are correct. That was my dog, Sierra.
did any one else see that dog
at 6:08 minutes I thought it was a moose.
I would love to talk to you about Bigfoot!
What you really need is a windy day......

Nice. I have done similar setups. Are still out there camping?
seeing how you have your truck, why not just buy a few pieces of thin wall electrical conduit and you always have poles ready to use.....
Did it rain?
Yes, it ended up raining for almost 2 days straight. Glad I had the tarp set up before it settled in.
Suggest you practice, then shoot your video. Informative.
I hate this guy.....Only because I'm so jealous. Always camping in the best places. Nothing like this in Massachusetts.
If you come out to Colorado then be sure to let me know and I'll show you some of the awesome places to camp with no crowds!
J Vonny it’s okay dude, nothing like this in Essex UK either.
J Vonny Try Northwestern Connecticut

Why not just use a 10x10 pop up over the back of your truck
because it takes up much more room
If thats a concern, fine, but it doesnt bother me and I can just drive off without having to disassemble the tarp
Nothing says poor craftsmanship more than lumpy tape
LMAO 😂
Wind is not good for your set up...
