I’d like to offer one minor suggestion! A moving blanket (available in various sizes @ Harbor Freight
Just a suggestion, get a couple of the cheap bright orange wal-mart silicone pot holders, and use them on the corners of the aluminum frame of the rear hatch on the truck cap. They'll save the tarp from being chafed or torn when the wind makes it 'work" over the corners of the hatch.
6 inch chunks of pool noodle will do the same job. cut some today. have a 40 yr canvas enclosure for my truck & cap. the hatch corners of the current cap are sharp.

I’m old and cheap; that’s a nice tarp but for car camping where weight doesn’t matter, a tarp from Harbor Freight would work. At the range, I used to rig one tarp out from the side of a truck with 7’4” sides, using two EMT conduit “poles” then run another tarp down the side and out under me for a floor. I could sit at my portable bench, protected from rain or sun, and ejected brass was all stopped by the tarps and easy to recover. 👍

This tarp is about the same size as one my largest show kite which drug 3 guys across a park when a gust of wind came up. I've even been lifted completely off the ground by my smaller 82 square foot kite and this tarp is 3 times larger than that, so like Luke says, don't underestimate the force of the wind and leave this tarp up in this configuration in windy conditions.
I use a 10’X10’ easy up tent over the back of mine. Sets up in seconds and has walls that can be placed around the sides. Entire thing around $200 and works great. There is also a 10’X20’ but I have not needed that much extra room.
WE did just that many years ago when family camping. tarp over pop up over screen house with eight feet in between. Used bungee cords and rope for those windy days. I would add to your system 2 more poles.
Luke - try using a bowline on the tarp and a taut line hitch on the stake.

I deploy this system with variables. Sometimes with more poles, sides lowered, or end down like a flap. It's a tarp. Endless configurations are possible. I still have a shorter tarp but I've become attached (pun intended) to larger size, 10x20. It's served me very well in rain when it was coming in sideways. I have to use my common sense as my wallet is thin.

Have always liked hanging a tarp from a vehicle for extra cover. Years ago I had a Dodge Ramcharger, we got ahold of a super large tarp. We made a large C shaped lean to type cover with enough for a floor and drop the front to make another wall for bad weather. Almost like a tube attached to the truck. Worked perfect, could sleep a dozen folks. went to the lake several years using this setup. Rigging for rain runoff is really important when using xtra large tarps. That would be perfect for my suburban. Some pool noodle or that foam you put on water lines would be good around the edges of the glass hatch corners though. Just a thought. Keep the great videos comin man. Hope to run into ya on a trail in NC some day. That would be the equivalent to meeting a celebrity for me lol.
I was searching the comments just for this idea, before I commented, the same about the pool noodles on the window hatch. I was cringing about a big tare in the nylon tarp. Great idea with the pool noodle!

I'd put 2 more poles closer to the truck or put the 2 you have closer and portion of the tarp as a lean-to. Otherwise nice, relatively quick and cheap alternative.
Discreet. Exactly. I just ordered 4 poles and a 20 mil, 24x12" tarp.. I have a '94 G10 Chevy Van (shortie) with swing out back doors and a slider on the side. 😎👍

Damm good video.... I had the same idea in my head for awhile. I wanted to take my idea to the beach.. Your video just brought that idea to life.. I don't own a 13x20 but I do own a 10x15.. That will give me enough overhang off the vehicle to stake it almost vertically .. Extend it out like you did and I should be golden.. I also own 3 pair of green elephant poles.. Thank you for putting out this video... I love owning tarps.... This goes to show everyone the versatility of owning one..

Nice setup! I've used a pop-up that is cumbersome, heavy, and hard to set up alone. I like the ease and light weight of this..I've been "eyeballing" those Green Elephant poles for a while now too. I saw another video you put up comparing those. Thanks for the info and advice...
Looks like a comfortable set-up. We used to do something similar back in Kandahar with a Bison AVGP and 6' pickets. I spent many nights sleeping in those 5 star accommodations!

I run tarp over whole cap to back door helps keep rain out as and can keep cap windows open in rain

I prefer this to an awning.
Ive got a bogstandard heavy duty plastic thing. Had it in the garden as a kids den for 6 months and it held up great.
Used something close to this with regular tarps and lit skeeter coils under my tail gate in low wind conditions . It works !

Very similar to my system. I went with a little less expensive route. I bought paint roller extension poles from Walmart for about eight bucks apiece. In my tarp isn’t as fancy as yours but gets the job done.
Awesome set up, Luke! I have a '19 GMC Savana 2500 cargo van and I use a dedicated Jeep spare tire tarp set up; straps and buckles affix the six foot wide end to the spare tire, extends outward for ten feet then tent poles and guy lines keep the ten feet wide end supported. Confused yet? :) I modified it a little and attached the narrower end just inside the sliding door of my van, extend it out ten feet and use Elephant tent poles, replacing the cheap set, and guy lines for support. Rebar tent stakes keep the wide end anchored. It almost looks like it was made for the van. I found this tarp at the local 4X4 shop on sale for fifty bucks. It is of military quality and came with a nicely made canvas bag with tarp, two tent poles, two heavy duty guy lines and two rebar stakes. It takes three to four minutes to set it up.
Do the same except pull the tarp down between the topper and cab. Makes sure no water gets in when the wind blows

I have that tarp, and their ten by ten. Love 'em both. I have six of the Green Elephant poles, two of which have failed on me... the telescoping locks gave out on those. Agreed on the need of GOOD stakes, they are a must.

A DIY version of the Slumberjack Roadhouse. Add grommets in the right place and you have a very versatile setup.
I just went winter camping. What a schlamozzle. Tent tarp gt. No leak. Dry as a chip. The tarp off the back of the vehicle was ok but not big enough...and it leaked. Yr setup looks good. Bit big for me tho. I really want something that wks in storms. Will check out yr slip knot vid. Thanks for sharing. :)

Yeah, in the military we were always told NEVER to put the tarp, netting, ect, directly on the truck. The reason being, in desert operations, the sun would heat up the netting/tarp, and without an air gap that would transfer directly into the truck turning it into an oven. By propping it off the vehicle itself you create an air gap that air can circulate under, keeping the inside of the vehicle cooler.
the problem is, it requires more poles, or the vehicle to be modified with its own raised mounting points
it will make almost no diff in temp but if you have the time and resources to build a tarp cover with a 3 ft gape then yes do it.
@@jernone3849 well it does make one big difference, if you lay the camo netting right on the vehicle, the "heat bloom" from the engine is still clearly visible to thermals. if you raise it up even 1-2 feet the heat circulates and doesn't heat the tarp directly, this masks the heat bloom of the engine and disperses the vehicles heat signature over the entire area.
Not all that important for camping unless you are stealth camping and police are using thermal drones or helicopters, (they do this usually looking for drug grows or when hunting for people at night).

I have a truck with a cap and do a similar setup using my Kelty 12'x12' tarp and a single pole.

I’m with you- I have a tundra too, switching from a land cruiser that had a rhino pioneer rack and Foxwing 270 awning. I don’t to attach all the stuff on my Tundra like you said, so this may be my next investment. Yep, I was set up on a large hill overlooking a lake, wind kicked and made my 270 awning a sail and it bent completely backwards breaking the poles and ripping the material. It was my fault since I didn’t guy out and the wind gusted up suddenly.
i considered adding a removeable awning to the drivers side with a 270 degree removeable awning on the passangers side, then i remembered, a tarp is cheap, and i can attach it to my headache rack easily with some 550 cord or a couple of DPM rubber straps, pretty simple and effective setup, i might have to try something like this next time i go camping
In 1969, my stepfather purchased the then new and revolutionary GMC Jimmy 4WD SUV and we took it on a fishing trip in the Adirondacks of NYS. The rear of the truck had sliding screened windows now common on fiberglas caps. We slept in the rear of the truck but found entering and exiting was a pain and limited storage. Next year we added an inexpensive 4 man(max) cabin tent to sleep in and a gazebo style awning between the tent and truck. We cooked on the truck tailgate and left much of the gear in the truck. We also did dishes and washed up on the tailgate. We used a painted piece of plywood to protect the tailgate and be able to wash it. A piece of masonite would also work well as you could set hot pans on it. We has a clothesline under the tarp for drying towels and clothes. Insects were a problem but we used Yard Guard and mosquito coils and ate in the tent. We used many bungee cords, clamps, and large sized spring paper clips to hold the awning in place. It had a tall center pole to give extra height.. We had tarps we could hang on the sides using clamps to keep out wind and rain and create a doorway. For your setup. I recommend a tall pole with a work glove on the end to give extra height and padding where needed. Also serves as a pole to hang a light. If we were to to it today, we'd get mosquito screening for a tent awning and make it fit under the tarp. It might not be perfect but would keep out the majority of biting bugs. Now they have stand alone gas stoves which could be used instead of cooking on the tailgate and could also provide some heat. A few folding tables and camp chairs add to the comfort as well as lighting, LP gas or LED. You can modify your setup and adapt as needed as we did some 50 years ago. The trick is to make the truck and the tent work together by means of the awning. You have to improvise. After looking at old photos, I notice the Jimmy did not have sliding rear windows with screens. That was later fiberglas truck caps. We took some plastic window screening and duct tape and fitted it to the roll down windows for a semi mosquito free environment if it didn't rain. It wasn't ideal but it was a test trip initially to see what would work and what didn't. Over the years, we moved up to a 12 X 12 cabin tent with rain fly and an attached 8 X 12 screened awning as the cooking area. Blue plastic tarps hung from the awning with clamps and spring steel paper clips allowed us to heat the area and keep out wind and rain and extended the camping into fall. Overlapping blue tarps served as a door.

Love this! My truck doesn’t have a camper shell but it’s got a sport bar. Thinking of using a smaller version of this set up to create a hasty hootch style shelter. A high a dry alternate to the tent. Love the channel!

Can do absolutely same thing with regular tarp .I use hiking poles .But you get the gear for free why not.
Id recommend a pool noodle for the glass raise up door to stop wear of the tarp from the corners of the door
I'd be more inclined to buy those poles if they had flip locks like decent hiking poles have. Twist locks always fail after heavy use, some sooner than later. Flip locks can also be retightened for firmer locking. They look like really nice poles overall!
Greatly appreciate the demo and source lists! :D I've had that idea for my pickup (which has a home-brew bunk etc) for quite some time, and purchased some decent quality (probably not as stout as yours) adjustable poles, and a smaller, different brand of waterproof nylon tarp. Have yet to set it up, but got some great ideas from your video re: assuring ventilation from side windows, and dealing with the flip-up rear canopy "window". I DID think about potential of paint abrasion when putting tarp over dusty canopy/truck.. and picked up some non-slip "rubbery" shelf liner, thinking I might place it between the paint and the tarp... don't know if it would help or not, since I haven't tried it yet! :D

I use an Aquatarp on my truck with a similar setup. My tarp is 15x15, and I set it up similar to this or go with a diamond configuration. I had a Roadhouse tarp, but it didn't last, as it got caught in a thermal on the Alvord Desert when I went into Fields for a burger and milkshake. Oh well! Live and learn. The Aquatarp is much better than the Roadhouse, but I like (mostly) the ropes and straps that come with the Roadhouse.
Got the same sort of rig but I use a 10x10 canopy frame behind the truck so it can handle some weather. Tarp goes over the truck bed and over the frame... nice and high and can handle a fire

I use a very similar setup, though I don't have the bed cap. I park my truck between a couple trees or a pair of tripods, throw a ridgeline between them, and then run my tarp from the top of my truck, over the ridgeline that's over the bed, and then to some stakes past the end of the tailgate. My truck has a very short bed, so I have to sleep with the tailgate down, but it's a cozy way to sleep.
I haven't used it yet, but a few weeks ago I picked up a 10x15 waterproof camping tarp, simikair adjustable tent poles to yours and a pack of heavy duty vacumn suction cups off Amazon that are designed to go on hoods and trunks to tie down kayaks etc. I'm going to try a side awning with two suction cups on my suv roof, and two adjustable tent poles, but it seems like a decent value driven awning alternative.

Have fun in Utah! It's getting to the busy season in southern Utah with everyone trying to avoid the heat of the oncoming summer. I've actually been looking for a set up like yours, though I don't think I'll go with a 13'x20', way overkill for me.

Truth in keeping things low key, you know people will break into all those overland setup vehicles. Same applies to people with gun related stickers on their truck or SUV. You know which vehicles to break into for guns, ammo, and other related items. The best way to run around in this new world is low key, below the radar of others.

I do something similar on my truck with a smaller Decathlon tarp... 20€ and it came with 2 poles and 6 guide lines. Good deal, easy to store, easy to setup, practical.
They also have a XL one but I felt it would start to be a pain to setup.
I use Aquaquest's 10 X 10 Safari. It works great. I don't drape it as far forward as you did.

I would and did go with a 270 degree awning with a side attachment, works better and looks better but it's more expensive. I must warn you setting up your 4x4 to be perfect is just like picking out gear for camping and hiking you get addicted a bit :)
Let us know how those stakes work and hold up. Living in Southern Arizona it could be a problem hammering those into the ground, even 4 inches... Safe travels.
I have the moon shade removable tarp/awning system. Easy to set up and removable. A little more expensive at $325 but I feel its worth it because of the quality and versatility. It is held on by heavy duty magnets or suction cups if your vehicle is aluminum or fiberglass. It's also kept rigid with tent style poles and is pretty stable in wind. You should check it out.
