Tiong Bahru - Nostalgic walk at Singapore's oldest housing estate

  • Tiong Bahru is the oldest housing estate in Singapore. It was developed by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) set up by the colonial government from 1936 to 1940 before the 2nd World War. The name Tiong Bahru means 'new cemetery'. Tiong means 'end' in the Chinese Hokkien dialect, and Bahru means 'new' in Malay - because this place used to be a burial ground. In recent years, a number of trendy tenants moved in to Tiong Bahru. Privé, Merci Marcel, Tiong Bahru Bakery, Flock Café, Plain Vanilla are just a few of them. We will pass by some authentic old-school coffeeshops. We will also pass by Yip Yew Chong's 3 beautiful and nostalgic murals of the old Tiong Bahru.
    A total of 20 SIT pre-war flats here and 2 rows of shops houses along Tiong Bahru Road are under conservation status. We will pass by these conservation pre-war SIT flats as well as the post-war SIT flats (not under conservation). A lot of research has been done while making this video. Please leave a comment as I love to hear from you. Thank you for watching 😀

    Thank you! What a treat! I spent a day exploring Tiong Bahru last year on my visit to S'pore - and I am old enough to remember the way it was in the 1980's and the original Bird Corner now immortalised by Yip Yew Chong's beautiful mural and poignant poem. Yes, saw quite a few Ferraris parked in the street...but thankfully the area has not lost its unique character.

      I love the ambience of the area. Glad that it's conserved and will be retained. Yew Chong's murals add nostalgia to this place. Have you seen his latest Chinatown mural? I recorded and posted it in this channel. He will be painting his next 3-storey high mural in Kampong Glam soon.

    Thank you for the wonderful neighborhood walk tour. It’s truly a prestigious area. It’s a shame that nice places becoming too expensive for most people. Same happened here in Vancouver and Toronto. But to be honest I think everywhere in Singapore is really nice to live.

    It seems to happen in a lot of places - old areas become trendy, the rich move in, and the prices become too high for the original residents.

    • @SingaporeCityWalks
      @SingaporeCityWalks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's true. Prices in old areas become too high. In Singapore, prices of new public housing are getting very high too. Gov is happily collecting taxes while people are suffering. Singapore is already the most expensive city in the world. Our property prices will soon beat Hong Kong to be the most expensive in the world soon.

      This is a lovely old neighbourhood. We can only walk by and enjoy the ambience. We can't afford the rent. It's too high.

      There are very few of such beautiful old neighbourhoods in Singapore. Sad that the rental prices have been chased too high up.

    Very high image quality. I like you do not over saturate color for your video. Using Pocket 3?

      Using Pocket 2. Pocket 3 doesn't exist yet. Yes, I did saturate the colour. Thanks for your advise.

    😅 I remembered those big tub which we used to store water for bathing. Must be from the same generation 😜Yes cold water and had to boil water when it is raining and cold...the good old days. I still bathe in cold water when I am back visiting Singapore😆

    • @SingaporeCityWalks
      @SingaporeCityWalks  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those big tubs are called dragon urns. Ah, the good old days! I recall now that my parents had to boil water to mix with the cold water in pails for me to bathe whenever the weather was cold.
      I lived in Chong Pang village. There were 2 black & white TVs in the whole village. The Community Centre has one and my neighbour has the other. When favourite shows like the man from U.N.C.L.E., my favourite Martian, Get Smart etc were shown, his house would be full of kids, including me. I watched Neil Armstrong landing on the moon in B&W, as colour TVs were not invented yet.

      @@SingaporeCityWalks 😅Guess you are more like my siblings age. Always hear about going to the neighbour's house to watch tv, they also double as titbits sellers. We moved to Toa Payoh when I was about one so no recollection about kampong life. I remembered watching the man from U.N.C.L.E. thought 😆. Thank you for the memories.
