  • I show you how I installed a set of awesome Larini Test Pipes in my Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. I did this to fix a common issue with the original 5.0 Lamborghini V10 that came on the 2004 to 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo. Over time the stock catalytic converters break down, exhaust reversion causes the loose material to get sucked back into the motor causing cylinder wall scoring.
    The Larini Test Pipes installed in this high mileage Lamborghini will make the car sound like it should have right out of the factory!

    • @johnmartin2079
      @johnmartin2079 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You must lubricate and heat like you did. Then crack the fastener, once you you can turn it quarter turn loose then reverse to tight , relube then loose again. Continue with this process. Also if you have an impact gun the inertia of the hit will spin the nut or bolt loose. Good luck and thanks for your patience and nice reply..

    If you have the highest mileage SL, I would be curious how much scoring you actually have in your cylinders. If a borescope shows none or little maybe there isn't much cat debris being sucked back in. But if you have excessive scoring then that confirms assumptions that cats can cause damage. You mention rebuilding the engine in the future, why? Have you looked inside or done a leakdown test, or just on principle of being a high mileage car? Finally, what did you end up doing with that stray wire at 3:07?

    • @TheBullRider
      @TheBullRider  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am very curious too dave! In a future video very soon, I am going to perform a leak down, compression check and borescope that motor. We will really know then.
      I will need to rebuild the motor because of the amount of oil consumption that i have experienced owning this car. Ive driven it about 1500 miles and have gone through about 3-4 liter of oil. The normal spec for these motors is about a liter per 1000 miles.
      If you look at my spark plug replacement video, I discussed how I found oil contamination on one of my spark plugs causing a misfire on one of the cylinders. Another good indication of leaking piston rings.
      The stray wire is normal! Surprisingly. I have a friend with a low mileage SL that says it normal. Surprising i know... LOL Tons of audi DNA in this car but some Lamborghini in it for sure! If it was an actual broken wire, I would re pin the connector.

    I've been told by Ferrari techs not to use those oil infused air filters. Your mileage may vary. On the cat particulate, do the cats break down with age or is it more likely with use? I wonder if your codes were deleted by someone with a tune. My codes have been deleted on my car. However, I don't go catless because of the loss of low rpm torque.

    • @TheBullRider
      @TheBullRider  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions Kent! So its true and false about the oil infused filters. Those filters are actually OEM Lamborghini! They were K&N filters from the factory! I was actually going to do a video on this but the original 5.0 V10 doesnt have mass air flow sensors, so having an oiled air filter doesnt effect any downstream sensors on the car. The 5.2 went with a different design with mass air flow sensors and has more of a traditional paper filter. Basically if you have MAFs, dont get oiled K&N filters because you will clog them quick!!
      You know that would be hard to pin down what causes this. I think it was more of a manufacturing/ quality control defect in the design of these cats. I think the cat core delaminates from the stainless tube and the material that we saw is the high temp epoxy residue that bonds the core to the housing. The error rates are random from what ive seen, some low mileage cars have a core that is loose in the housing but mine is huge high mileage high use/ track use and they are still bonded to the housing... mostly. It would be hard to get empirical data as its just end users reporting the failures at random intervals, random years, random mileage etc.
      I dont think it was tuned and that is why it confuses me! The two other owners never modified the car so thats why I thought it was so odd!! I also talked to the mechanic that worked on the car from new! But yeah the best way to go tbh is to delete those readiness requirements from the ECU and still make it look stock.
      Do you just have a 430 or do you have a Gallardo too?
      I agree about the loss of low end torque but its really not noticeable. I cant honestly tell any change in power and torque, i probably lost about 20 ft/lbs down low and gained about 20 hp up top but thats in the noise.
      Always nice to hear from you Kent and thanks for reaching out!

      @@TheBullRider "Do you just have a 430 or do you have a Gallardo too?" I have several cars, none are Lamborghini. I also own a 488 Pista (new acquisition). I've haven't been a fan of Lamborghini after the Diablo. I prefer sexy curves and less cubist types of design which can become dated. However, I follow your channel because I'm always interested in smart people that have functional intelligence. I don't work on my cars, I pay others to do that for me, but I like to stay informed.
      On the filters, I look at your air box and I see a ton of dirt in it. I can't help but think those filters aren't trapping all that dirt and its entering your engine at relatively large particulate sizes. If I look at your air intake flaps, the left looks really dirty and the right looks relatively cleaner. Perhaps some oil spray?
      I enjoy your videos primarily because I'm a closeted wannabe engineer 🙂

So I guess I'm more of a Lambo guy!!! I love the cubist design of the Aventador for example. It has lines and cubist inspiration. To me that is 1000% Lambo!
      My wife and I seem to have a polar opinion than you hehe! We dont really like the Diablo much, although the post facelift one with the 300z headlights does look rather good in specific colors.
      You catch a lot of things in the video and I appreciate that! The dirt in the air box is before it reaches the filters. Just 100k worth of build up. I plan on doing a refurbish of that airbox as the paint needs a little bit of work too but nothing too crazy.
      Great catch on the oil on one of the throttle bodies! The crankcase vent valve purges oil mist back into the intake stream on that bank and makes that throttle body dirty. Just like you said, a bit of oil spray!!
      You are very astute. I would say a whole lot more than a wannabe engineer!

    • @TheBullRider
      @TheBullRider  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is totally a trade off between filtration ability and volumetric flow rate. K&N filters are among the best flowing but also filter the least. Whether that is good for the motor or not is another topic for debate entirely!

I’m trying to decide between the test pipes and the sport cats. I would prefer that test pipes for various reasons. But I have heard some people complain of a loss of low end power with the test pipes claiming it was caused by a loss of back pressure. I’m curious as to your opinion and results after your test pipe install. Are you pleased with the results? Any loss of low end power? Appreciate your feedback and really pleased to find your channel. Your videos are priceless. 👍👍

    • @TheBullRider
      @TheBullRider  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't notice a loss of low end power by adding the test pipes Osprey. You might loose 20 ft lbs or so of torque at the low end of the powerband but that is so insignificant that you wouldn't ever notice. At least my "butt dyno" isn't calibrated enough for that! LOL
      I love my test pipes and in reality the big difference between the two is price. If you can swing the 3kish for the sport cats, get the cats. If you rather save a bit of cash and invest it somewhere else in your car, get the test pipes.
      The last thing to consider is emissions in your area. Ive never thrown a check engine light for going catless but that doesnt mean that you wont. The same thing might happen with sport cats, these cars ECUs are finicky and moody but theres plenty of ways to eliminate codes if they do pop up.

      @@TheBullRider yea man the main reason I picked up my r8 v10 plus was because I couldn’t find the spec I wanted for a Superleggera but with the market right now I may just get one I trust. I’ll keep you updated. It’s very close to your spec. Only doesn’t have carbon brakes but I’ll add them because after having them on my r8 I can’t go back.

      Hi Jan! You really think so? I thought that the converter cells themselves were in good shape but I noticed how the cell material was delaminating from the walls of the pipe. What do you think about all the stuff that came out? It really surprised me how much stuff came out of there!

      @@janpieters6733 I appreicate your perspective Jan. Yeah the core looked like it was in good shape but I think the failure point for this is it delaminating from the stainless steel pipe that it is bonded too.

      I still have the cats in the garage but it would be hard to determine what material specifically came out of the cats when i nocked them on the ground. Do you have any ideas on the best way to do this?

      @janpieters6733 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBullRider Think that bad catalytic converters is overrated, talked with some specialist about it and they confirmed me that. I also read lots of people engine check lights because they say it is in the nature of the G. But you should investigate it and determine what is the problem. Also when the CAT light burns on the dash you should be cautious, you will overheat the catalytic converters and damage them and that can cause huge problems.
      End of story is be cautious on check engine lights and determine what the problem is.

      I agree with you, it might be overrated. It is an interesting debate where we need more data to really determine if it is true.
      Either way, the test pipes are a fun mod and a good way to get those F1 sounds. I think that's something we can both agree on!
