I was working in computer sales at Frys Electronics in Phoenix in the mid 2000's. A quiznos opened up across the street, to promote it they dropped off a ton of coupons where if you bought a drink you got any sandwich free, no expiration. I found the stack in our breakroom and swiped them all into my locker. I ate there every day for months, now that Quiznos, Frys and my physique are all gone.
Lol I had a stack full of those exact same promos and did the same as there was one within like a 2 minute walking distance of one of the first jobs I had as a teen. So ate good every day for almost a year. That French dip sandwich they had with the peppercorn dressing was so damn good and the main sandwich I got especially when it was cold out as I worked outside mostly. I knew the place wasn't going to last because I feel like 98% of the time I would go into that restaurant which was in a busy shopping center I was usually the only customer there and maybe they would have 1 max 2 others at busy, usual lunch times. You could tell it was brutal there and a ticking time bomb.
I used to work with a guy whose family was a franchise owner. He could never talk about what happened with the legal battle they won, other than they had to shut down, and they still own the franchise rights to the area.
You missed that the monkey characters were not original to the ads. They first appeared in "We Love the Moon", an early memetic web animation, and Quiznos simply bought the rights to use them.
The irony here in downtown ATL, is that there's a Quiznos that has outlasted Subway (3 locations), Popeyes, McDonald's (both locations), Arby's & Burger King. 🤷🏿♂️
"We love the subs!".... an incredibly bizarre commercial but it did its job. Almost 20 years later and I still instantly correlate that phrase and Quiznos
Besides the SpongMonkeys (which are Tarsiers) and the "Quiznos 5,4,3" commercials, the most memorable thing on Quiznos was its slogan/motto: _"Quiznos….Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm Toasty."_
Can you please share the recipe. I have tried to make a couple copy cat recipes and can get really close with the sauce but can never get the au jus right
Quiznos was way better than Subway. When I was a kid, I ate quizos all the time. I was a die-hard subway loyalist, until a friend told me how good quiznos was. Once I tried Quiznos, I was immediately hooked, and I never went back to subway. Even to this day, I've had subway maybe 5 times in the past 20 years. Once you've had quiznos, subway just doesn't cut it anymore. Quiznos is sorely missed.
Everything is better than subway atleast Everything in the past 2 decades or so. Honestly surprised to see so many still open as they don't seem to get much business. I'm convinced a good number of them are just used to launder dirty money or something haha
@@nekbiodieselworksI mean that depends on the grocery store. If any of those stores use boarheads meat that I wouldn't eat there, you should look up all the recalls that company has had. I'd be weary about eating from any subplace without knowing the source of where shit comes from
It wasn’t the quirky commercials that did them in… it was the declining quality of their subs that did it. They expanded too quickly without a plan for their suppliers to keep up with the demand and they started substituting lower quality ingredients and the taste just wasn’t the same.
There were only two small shops in a 40 mile radius of where I live. The portions drastically decreased as well, sub size got considerably smaller and weighing portions of bacon etc. Went from healthy portions to super limited.
Whichever ones were in Columbus, Ohio where I live, the subs were toasted, but the meat was still cold. Which makes me wonder why Quiznos is positively compared to Subway, which at least had the option to warm up cold sandwiches. If the expenses of each franchisee aren't what killed Quiznos, the spider monkeys sure did.
When I was in college, I got Quiznos almost everyday for lunch since there was one on campus. The only place to get it. Now, there’s not in a city about 25-30 min away, which isn’t bad. This just brought back my love for the Peppercorn Steak sandwich lol
They had the best Cuban Sandwiches in a 5 mile radius when I was going to college, ironically... In florida. Only other place to get one that good (And better) was the ACTUAL cuban owned bar 20 miles further down the road.
I'm in Michigan and while there are several locations here, they're all over by Detroit. However, a friend and I went to Costa Rica recently and there was one near the hotel our last day there, so she gamely allowed me to drag her along. This allowed our trip activites to look like: zip lining, kayaking, jungle hikes, Quiznos.
Love your videos! My province Newfoundland and labrador has a single quiznos on the go still lol I love stopping there when I'm near it but its like a 3 hours drive from where i am.
I worked for Quiznos for a number of years. After they hired that Burger King exec Greg Brenneman the entire menu got wrecked. They got rid of the hoagie bread for the Steakhouse beef dip which ruined a core staple menu item (Normal bread for au jus - stupid), changed the toasting levels for the bread (no more deep blackened edges I mean look at @10:41 its barely warm), and added numerous failed products like bread bowls and garlic bread to the menu while cutting back on quality. But damn, that chicken carbonara....
Oh how I hated cutting those bread bowls up! But it was worse when the new employees did them, because then you'd be trying to fill them with soup and they'd be too small, or they'd leak. I knew it was the beginning of the end though when they got rid of ciabatta. And then the smoked turkey and roasted red pepper sauce.
I didn't mind the bread bowel prep IIRC, the one that got me was the "Triple Q" with that special two blade knife to trisect the bread. What were they thinking...?
Quizno's Carbonara was amazing... Went to one down the street one day back in 2006, and there were just closed. No sign, no warning.. Just no one inside working.
I wasn't made aware of Quiznos until long after the Sponge Monkey ads stopped airing. I was shown them much later and was bewildered. There were once five Quiznos in my city. They slowly began vanishing, one by one, starting in 2017. The last one closed in 2022, and I was quite upset. If I wanted to get my hands on a Chicken Carbonara (my favorite!) with a side of Batch 83, I would now have to travel over an hour in either direction on the highway to do it.
I'd love it if you could make a video talking about the history of another sandwich chain, Which Wich? I love how customizable their sandwiches are and the unique ordering method of having the customer writing their sandwich choices onto the paper bags. You were also encouraged to draw on the back of your sandwich bag when you were done and then attach it to the wall along with all the other customer's art-covered bags! They also made the world's best ice cream milkshakes. There used to be one inside my local Target, and then another stand-alone shop in the next city over. Now they're both gone and the stand-alone shop has been replaced by an Ike's Love and Sandwiches and the Target one has been replaced by basically a self-checkout soda fountain with grab-and-go pizza shelves. The Pizza Hut branded pies are premade, reheated on site, offer zero customization, and are quietly stocked by anonymous employees in the back that you never interact with. The next closest Which Wich? is now more than 35 miles away, and they've almost all but completely vanished from LA county.
There was a Quiznos by my old job that I'd eat at almost everyday, it practically shut down overnight and the next day I went there it was completely empty. The last remaining Quiznos in my area was in a shopping plaza next to a Target, it was kind of out of the way to get to and I wasn't surprised when it eventually shut down as well.
I worked at Quizno's during the sponge monkeys days. I really enjoyed my time there. The food was good, the pay was good, and my co workers were mostly great. They just didn't pay enough to keep me there.
I would try Quiznos but the only one in my town is located in a sketchy gas station. But yeah I love Jersey Mikes. Probably the best out of chain shops if you’re looking for cold subs
I’m so sad that Quizno’s is basically dead. Growing up the Prime Rib with Peppercorn was my favorite thing especially with their in house hot sauce to eat. I’ve found Quizno’s since then but the menu is much smaller, old items that still exist have different names, and their hot sauce is gone.

I know someone who owned a Quiznos franchise and had suffered under the weight of the discount coupons he was requested to honor. When he simply couldn't any longer, customers just stopped coming. It was very frustrating and eventually went out of business.
The few that I ate at in my hometown, seemed to struggle from day 1; I worked in downtown Fort Worth, and the one there constantly got orders wrong or took longer than anticipated to get orders out. The one in my neighborhood took forever to open (at one point the opening was delayed bc the franchisee ran out of money & it had to be sold to new owners bf it finally opened). Never had an issue with the quality of their food, or their ads, but the ones I visited always seemed to be “not prepared” for customers..
There was a Quiznos in my town, we went there once, it was packed, and we wanted to go again during the next pay period. 1 week later, it suddenly closed out of nowhere. That location is now a UPS Pick up and drop off location.
Loved this place. Great sandwiches. The one I went to was owned by an Indian family. Hospital clean. They remembered me and usually already knew what my go to order was. They blew Subway away. I really miss Quiznos.
The one in my hometown closed in 2020. Every time I passed by, hardly anyone was there. That was why I thought it was surprising mine lasted as long as it did.
This was fascinating stuff. Cheers. Obviously, I had no idea what constituted a Quiznos. Why would I? The ads you exhibited seem akin to the Tango ad campaign; weird, bizarre and random, with a slim thread being popular with the younger demographic. I wonder, was the bread not really bread? I recall Subway facing issues with their sugary loaf when they tried to break into overseas markets. Or, is it just a normal thing in the States to expect bread substitute, making it tacit?
It's a real shame how things went down with Quiznos. At their peak, Quiznos had four locations in my area and all of them closed as fast as they opened. Quiznos didn't treat their franchisees very well and cause a lot of them to go broke due to poor business practices. I honestly miss Quiznos because despite what happened between the corporation and their franchisees, I loved their sandwiches. I would eat there as often as I could. There are no locations left in New England since the fall of Quiznos and if I wanted to go to there, the nearest location to me is all the way down in Washington, DC.
We had a quiznos, old style shake shop and a wings n' things in the same place when I was in college and we went there constantly lol. So many college students were sad when it closed.
I was a fan, & miss Quiznos subs!! Quiznos toasted subs are, in my opinion, still the best i've ever had. Subway subs, for me, have never been on the same level, as Quiznos subs. So, there are actually still some open? I got to find out the locations of some of these. Also, i loved the spongemonkeys. Thought they were hilarious, lol!
I tried to eat at Quiznos once because Subway had did not have any toasted sandwiches. The only way to get a hot sandwich at Subway was to have them use their microwave. The sandwich Quiznos offered did not taste good at all and that location closed down to later become a Papa Murphy's. Another Quiznos location was about open and even sent out flyer coupons in anticipation of their grand opening. When I arrived the location had not opened but they claimed it would at some point. It never did and in fact that location was remodeled and became a Subway, by which time Subway started offering their sandwiches with a toasted option.
Back years ago I worked at a Quinos and i got to be really good friends with the owner. As I was curious as to opening one myself, he dead eye looked me in the face and said "don't". He told me the place was taking in $259k yearly, but all the franchise costs left him with $25k
I loved quiznos back in the mid 2000s, however, when I started going into stores where the owner operators hardly spoke english, and they were selling random items on the counters almost like a backwoods gas station, it was odd.
Quiznos was my absolute favorite. Their sandwiches were way better than the competition. I really wish they would come back, they were worth the price.
there was one in downtown ottawa years ago which closed out at least a decade ago. i noticed the other week, a new quiznos is going in the same spot. circle of life...
There was still one attached to a gas station in South Louisiana where I grew up but I think the direct hit by hurricane Ida in 2021 killed it off (along with my house and vehicle). Still, until that day, I was a huge fan of the chicken carbonara and even their weird raspberry lemonade drink. Always wondered why I stopped seeing them pop up. And yes, I still remember that song instantly. It was at one time creepy and hilarious.
We still have a few Quiznos here in Metairie Louisiana, often busy. Metairie is full of shops like Jimmy Johns, Jersey Mikes, Subways, Charley's, McAllister's, and Jason's Deli. All in close proximity and Quiznos have doing well for years. Maybe my taste buds are shot, but I prefer Quiznos over the others.
Yeah! I spotted that too. Now I want to make myself an Italian sub for dinner based on his video th-cam.com/video/0rmrZZj1Hjs/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=EthanChlebowski
I used to love Quiznos, even worked there for a little bit in high school. I was sad to see them disappear, but their quality rapidly dropped near the start of their downfall. I loved the carbonara
I think I only had Quiznos a couple times in my life. They peaked around when I graduated HS. These days I always go to New Jersey Michaels for a cheesesteak or Big Kahuna (chicken or steak). If you miss grilled subs, Penn Station is the way to go, and my #2 favorite, sometimes I just go for the hand cut fries 😋

Prior to 2020, I had not had a Quiznos sub in over a decade. Then I traveled to see a friend in Spokane, and in the airport on the way back they had a Quiznos, so I got a sub. It was pretty good and it's a bit of a shame to see how far they've fallen.
I had to stop and look it up. Only two left in the Bay Area and not convenient. I loved them the times I had them but they're always going to be number two after Togo's, which I grew up on!
The more you dig into the shady practices of the parent company at Quiznos, the more you start to think they absolutely deserved every single bit of their failure. They make the likes of Ubisoft or Comcast look like good corporate citizens.
My FIL, who adores mom and pop shops and despises franchises, was sooooo disappointed to find out his fav new sandwich place was a franchise. Quiznos. 😂
I really miss Quiznos. I happened to go to my local one the day they got the news that they'd be closing. The two workers were inside searching their phones for other jobs.

The one in my neighborhood took forever to open (at one point the opening was delayed bc the franchisee ran out of money & it had to be sold to new owners bf it finally opened). Never had an issue with the quality of their food, or their ads, but the ones I visited always seemed to be “not prepared” for customers..
I still dream of the toasted Tuscan Chicken on that bread!
A Jimmy John's opened behind our local Quiznos and a Subway opened up across the street from it resulting in the closure of our only Quiznos in town.
My first job was at a Quiznos in Anchorage AK. Had a bong hiding spot out back and everything.
I lived on Quiznos in college from about 2001 - 2003. There was one downstairs in my dorm in midtown Atlanta.
I've never had Quiznos but man, I remember those strange "monkey" character ads that still haunt my mind. lol
Never ate there but those commercials were nuts.
I had a fairly large number of Quiznos Subs when they were around, the sandwiches were good, a bit expensive and then they were gone.
Quiznos was the only fast food place I went to more than once. Now I live where there are none. Nice!
Ate at Quiznos for dinner thanks to your video. Glad I did. Food is still delicious and they were dead. Only customer in the half hour I was there.
My favourite was the beef dip with the broccoli soup… loved Quizno’s over every other sub shops 😢
there was one in downtown ottawa years ago which closed out at least a decade ago. i noticed the other week, a new quiznos is going in the same spot. circle of life...

Now I want to make myself an Italian sub for dinner based on his video

Today, the supermarket deli tends to have the best sammiches. I get mine at Safeway.
The sponge monkeys where the best commercial hands down. Especially after the chihuahua from TacoBell was kinda absent. People love a memorable mascot
Having ANOTHER Weird History drink!
Drinking Sprecher Orange Dream soda*†...while watching this Weird History video!
I bought it at Menards.
* Inspired by the Weird History videos about soda.
† It's in a 16 oz glass bottle.
Sprecher Cream Soda is the BEST cream soda in history. Nothing else comes close.
There are only two Quiznos left where I live (Dallas/Fort Worth) but thankfully both are about 7-8 miles away.
I loved their grilled subs. The location near my home was surrounded by fast food joints. Never stood a chance.
I went for the steak sandwiches covered it Batch 81. Loved that pepper sauce
One of The Quiznos Commercials Features in Timeline 2004
Prior to 2020, I had not had a Quiznos sub in over a decade. Then I traveled to see a friend in Spokane, and in the airport on the way back they had a Quiznos, so I got a sub. It was pretty good and it's a bit of a shame to see how far they've fallen.
1:03 ethan chlebowski I spy?? No sourcing?
I knew that looked familiar!
Quiznos. 😂
In Salt Lake City, there is a Quiznos close to my work. I go there every few months, it's still good.
I really miss Quiznos. I happened to go to my local one the day they got the news that they'd be closing. The two workers were inside searching their phones for other jobs.
Sad as I loved the commercials as, they stuck in your head, and their subs it was sad to see them disappear.
I miss Quiznos so much. There’s only one left in my area but it’s on the other side of town.
I love those sponge monkeys ads so much, I recorded a few of them. They are great for annoying your guests 😂
Fun fact: "We Love the Subs" was an adaptation of a viral video "We Like the Moon". Found that so amusing when I first saw it. It's more ridiculous than the subs version.
