    The correct way to adjust this low speed needle, is to turn it all the way in until it is lightly seated. You then turn it back out 1 1/2 turns. That becomes a reference point for further adjustment. I like to be able to get a equal rotation each way so set the knob at about what would be 4 on the top. This should give you a basic setting. Once you get it where you want, you can pull it off , then reposition the knob where you want it.
    With the motor warmed up and the twist throttle in a SLOW position approximating your intended slow/trolling speed, turn this low speed needle jet in about 1/8 of a turn, let the engine run for about 15 seconds to respond to your new setting. Do it again then wait for the results. A cough is indicative of a rich mixture. Too lean it will just die. When you make this change and the engines either sputters or wants to die, back it off the the last position then this should be close to the ideal setting. If you go to rich it will cough AND then die. You can now pull the idle knob forward and off the splined shaft, reposition it so that the knob pointer is down so you will have movement either way from this position for fine tuning if needed. This low speed setting does not effect the high speed running of the motor. However it you set it too lean, you may later have a issue with it not wanting to start when it is warm.

      yes the base setting is important especially with this carb as you can get it way off the way the adjuster knob goes on.

    1st, Rest in Peace Pepper. Pepper was the star of the show! Clearly, such a great companion. 👍 Onto some Yachting... Since Ben can do this with his eyes closed...lol I'll add to the concept. The factory setting on nearly all the metal 9.9/15 carbs is ~1 turn out from lightly seated. Neverless, it'll start fine at 1.5 turns out. The most important technique is to rotate the needle in until it begins to slow down(too lean) - make a mental note (like on a clock) . Then, back out the mixture screw(counter-clockwise) to richen until it just begins to slow down (too rich). THEN SET IT MIDWAY BETWEEN BOTH NOTED POINTS on the clock. After rotating the needle to the midpoint, pull out the knob and re-install with the tang facing staright down (6 o'clock). FYI-Normally, it's ~ 180 degree total difference between too rich and too lean. If you'd like to slightly richen it as many shops do, rotate counterclockwise (back out) ~5minutes if you view it as a clock. This process can start in neutral, but must be completed at a low speed in gear. I actually prefer reverse, since it's the toughest to idle at (exhaust gases), but forward is fine. A filled barrel is fine. In gear at idle stomp on the throttle momentarily, if it conks out, then it's slightly lean. 2nd test at idle, stomp on the throttle momentarily then immediately back to idle(closed throttle). If it conks after the abrupt drop to closed idle it's slightly rich (though it may be satisfactory in normal use). As Ben said, slightly rich is better than slightly lean. Next step...let it sit for 10 minutes off and it should restart without throttle. If it doesn't re-start, give it some throttle and retry. As these motors get older, there may be a compromise and raising the idle speed might be part of keeping your sanity. FYI- For the points motors '74-76 NGK B6HS, for the '77-1992's we've gone to NGK B7HS. Champion plugs seem to have a lower quality nowadays. We often will "Index" the plugs which allows for a bit better running at idle, especially if slightly rich, but that's a whole different topic. We stock index washers, so it's just a few more minutes of time. Hope that helps.

    Thanks for the response. You and Pepper keep putting out those videos! It would also be cool if you videoed the maintenance you did to the motor prior to testing it out. I know it is probably a pain, but it would be some real good information for people. I know I would love to come to your shop and watch/learn when you do some work on these older motors. I might try my hand at those older motors myself one day.

    There's also a high speed screw on the left side of the carb. The shifter side of the engine. Its a fuel mixture screw with a T on the end so you can turn it with your fingers, thats only for high rpm tuning though and unless there's a carb issue you shouldn't have to move that one more than 1/8-1/4 turn in either direction...

    Hey Ben, love your videos. Wondering if you could answer a question for me? I just bought a 1987 15hp Johnson and it's got it a sticker on it that says 100:1 fuel ratio on it. I asked the person I bought it from and he agreed that is the ratio he used. I read around on the internet and some people say use 50:1 instead. What do you think?

    • @chrysleroutboarddude
      @chrysleroutboarddude  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Matthew Olday From what i have learned about this is, OMC recalled the motors with the 100/1 sticker and replaced it with a 50/1 sticker. If it was my motor i would use 50/1 or even more oil. I have a 30hp and a few 6 and 8hp motors that say 100/1 and i use 40/1 in them.

    Great video! I have a 1985 15hp Evinrude I've had since new (and it still looks new) and it sat for about 3 years. Cleaned the carb, new plugs, new grease in the low end, new tank and new fuel lines. Idles like it's brand new but once I'm running along and get to about 85-90% of throttle it starts to lunge up and down between 95-100% and down to 75-80%. Up and down....Up and down. I played with the fuel mixture for a while running up and down the river but it doesn't seem to change anything at higher speed. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi I have about a 2000 15 two stroke and it will not idle. I was curious about the line on the timing plate. I think I heard you say it should line up with carb wheel when at idle. There is a screw on the linkage back by the plugs is this for setting the line? also it seems you can adjust the ramp with that screw in the plastic a few inches from the line. Thanks for any information.

    • @chrysleroutboarddude
      @chrysleroutboarddude  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On that motor the 1st thing I would look at is the cylinder head bolts they have a tendency to loosen up over time and cause poor idling.
      The 2nd thing I would check is that there is a rubber hose inside the carburetor that feeds the idle Circuit and they will turn to mush. 3rd thing is the top plastic carburetor cover is well known to crack.

    So I just got a 9.9 Evinrude that's been pickled it's really clean hasn't run for years but like I said they said it was pickled whatever the hell that supposed to mean LOL I guess it was put away properly but it doesn't have a throttle arm which is okay because I have a sailboat so I steer it with my tiller on my sailboat but it has an electric start and I've never started one without a throttle arm... No I have started a car under the running things using the carburetor and you know throttling it like that but not now bored with an electric start and I'm a bit tired it's been a long long treck and I don't know what the hell I'm doing can anybody help me it would be wonderful thank you

    I've got almost the same motor (25 evinrude). I took it out yesterday and when I left the boat ramp and throttled up, it didn't really do anything. I tried chokin it and still nothin. Then I blocked off the intake into the carb with my fingers and it took off like a rocket. I had to block off about half of the intake. Any clue what would make it run so lean?

      Thanks man. I did leave the tank unscrewed a little last week when it rained. But on the return trip yesterday the motor ran like it should. So hopefully I just had a little rain water in the tank. Thanks for your quick feedback man!

    i currently have a 1976 johnson, it was runing perfectly until someone played with my lean screw and now it idols perfectly fine but when you give it any sort of throttle it just wants to die in gear, could this be I just have to play with the lean screw and put it back so it runs rich again?

    • @chrysleroutboarddude

      That sounds like it is still too lean, or you might have a dirty carb.

    I took off my lower unit on my 1979 Johnson 15hp and whole changing the water pump impeller the drive shaft came out of the lower head. Now I cannot seem to install the shaft back without the “ nut “ on the shaft going any further down. It won’t allow for the new plate to sit flush on the head. Any ideas what happened ???? I would rest appreciate if you can help. Thanks

      Pull the shaft down(shit into reverse) and it should reach. Ooops...I misread. Did you turn the prop shaft slowly while you try to slip the shaft back in place so it lines up?

    Hi I have an old west bend 6 hp motor that only fires for a short while when fuel is added to spark plugs. I’m guessing the carb needs a good cleaning. But I can’t find any how to videos or any information if I’ll need new parts to clean it. If you can get back to me that would be great 👍 or email address for contacting

    I have an 91 evinrude 3hp and experiencing the same problem... When I put it into gear it runs rough, the more gas I give, it starts to choke then dies. It seems like the throttle is releasing too much gas or something?? Is the throttle feeding too much gas??

    I'm currently cleaning up one of these motors, 1981 15hp more or less an identical motor, minus the throttle linkage. The motor i have has never idled according to the past owner and i couldn't make it idle either. I just rebuilt the carb but it wasn't all that dirty. It's winter here so I can't test it, but could you maybe let me know exactly what screw you were referring to? Mine is missing the idle knob on the left side of the motor but i'm told that doesn't have much effect

    • @chrysleroutboarddude
      @chrysleroutboarddude  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well 1st off you will need that idle adjust knob, without it you will not be able to set the minimum engine speed. Now if i remember the 1981 does not have a throttle lash adjustment screw. When it warms back up again make a video of what it is doing and i will help all i can.

      appreciate the response, i talked to a few guys and they said the idle knob wouldn't make a huge difference and that it should idle without it, i actually found the retaining pin and the plastic knob inside the motor, the knob was gone though..the screw it looks like you're pointing to, on my motor is an allan key head on a piece of plastic, it doesn't appear to have much effect on anything? as the motor is sitting in the dining room i could email or post a picture thanks again

      this is the screw only screw in that area, it's attached to the throttle, though the 1981 doesn't have a throttle cable it uses the gear teeth (terrible design) this screw doesn't really appear to do anything it's just screwed into plastic

    • @chrysleroutboarddude
      @chrysleroutboarddude  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ryanbreeze Well the idle is set with a combination of timing and throttle plate position and fuel mixture. What that screw does is set the position of the throttle plate in the carb and when you open the throttle on the carb with the engine at idle it will lean out the fuel mixture. so that is why you have a low speed idle mixture needle. The idle adjustment knob sets the timing, and if you can't set the timing there is no way to get the throttle cracking screw set correctly. For a starting point close the idle mixture needle all the way, then open it 4 turns, then set the throttle cracking screw so that the throttle plate just starts to open when the roller lines up with the line on the mag plate, then set the idle adjust so the timing will not go lower then the 1st line on the mag plate. Start the motor let it warm up then you will be able to fine tune it by adjusting the cracking screw and the fuel mixture needle. Then and only then you can set the lowest idle with the adjustment knob on the side of the motor.

      i really appeciate the responses, were you able to look at the picture i posted above to see if that'sthe throttle cracking screw you're referring to? i took a pic of it, as it's out of my motor right now, just doesn't seem like it does any actual adjusting. (sorry very new to this, first outboard)

    chrysleroutboarddude - I just bought the same motor in your video. I also have the same problem, being a broken idle stop knob. A new Idle adjustment plastic knob & retaining ring from Amazon, $36.00 is on its way. My question is, why do I need this, on my previous motors mostly Mercury, there was no such thing, you would turn the throttle to start and start the motor, then when stopping I would turn the throttle down and shift to neutral. Please reply.

    • @nicstr28
      @nicstr28 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You dont have to have it if it idles fine and you dont need to adjust it for trolling. Thats all its for....allows you raise/lower idle without adjusting anything on the carb. I know this is old post but just in case you never got an answer.

    how far should you have to twist throttle in order to start?I asume this determines on the one adjustment screw you talked about.Also, if I have the throttle twisted all the way off should that little roller be hitting or just barely touching the piece it rides on?My roller is pretty far away from the piece it rides on, so I have to twist throttle pretty far in order to start to open throttle to start.

    I have a 1979 Chrysler 7.5 that I have been trying to get running, and i have done everything the manual says to do, but the engine will only stay running for about 3 seconds before it dies again. It wants choke on to start but immediately wants it off to run. There have been a couple of time when it ran fine for several minutes and especially well at full throttle, but now I cant keep it running. Ive verified compression with a gauge (100psi on both cylinders), replaced the fuel lines, fuel pump, cleaned the carb and adjusted the float and mixture screw, adjusted the stator control link and throttle cam follower, gaped the plugs all per the manuals instructions. It seems like a fuel problem to me but I don't know what else to try! you seem to have great success with these motors, and was curious if you had ever run into this?

    I just bought a 85 15hp evinrude. When it's cold and it first starts up the rpms go crazy (I'm no mechanic). Just when I think I'm going to become a human drone, it goes to "normal" idle and runs smoothly. But when in forward I can't go more than 8mph in a 14ft smokercraft. It seems like I should be able to open that up and get about twice the speed. I suspect the butterfly valve is not opening all the way. Anyone have ideas? Please go easy on me. Thank you!

BUT NOW i see you are the chrysler outboard dude you might have parts i need for a 3.6 chrysler , I need a pull cord ass, it comes strait out the front , ,has 2 little flat catches into the deep cup from what i remember . If you sell parts like this & the water pump let me know & i'll find the model # & part # of the cup. THANKS dude & anyone that can answer the MPG question .

    • @chrysleroutboarddude

      Steven Hardy Sorry but i don't sell part's. MPG is about 10% the horse power per hour, so a 10hp is about 1 gallon a hour at full power.I would say your best place too look for the parts is ebay.
