- elcome to the 1st part of the 2-part special of legend of cricket - Sunil Manohar Gavaskar. In this episode of legends of cricket I talk about my Iconic opening partner - Sunil Gavaskar. I m blessed to have had the chance of opening with him for India and now while looking back I can honestly say that he was a class apart when it came to the art of batting.
I talk about a lot of things about Sunil Gavaskar that made him one of the all-time greats of cricket, Right from the first time I saw him to the time I played against him and finally the time when I opened with him.
Sunil Gavaskar was always the role model for any aspiring cricketer of my time. He was the one cricketer who held all the records for batting in test cricket at one point in his career, right from the highest runs in a debut series, to the maximum hundreds by a batsman and the highest run tally in test cricket.
I talk about quite a bit of how it was to watch him from the other end, right to the point of what we used to talk about in the middle and how he is as a person. I even share some funny cricket moments between us.

Sir I too watched the match at Loyola college. Gavaskar hooked a bouncer from kalyanasundaram, still fresh in my memory.

I didn’t understand a single word but I loved listening to this great and humble entertainer of the game just because he was speaking in his mother tongue Tamil. A language with a heritage and super literature someday if I get a chance I would surprise my close ones by learning this classic language with the same accent as tamils speak in.

My cricketing god Sunil Manohar Gavaskar. As far as I am concerned the best Indian opening pair which I saw was Sunny and Krish Srikkanth. Their batting style was contrasting but it is wonderful to watch. Feel so happy to have witnessed these two great players play. Cheeka sir you are really great.

you were our favourite in 80s...you kick started enthusiasm in most people....due to your hard hitting boundaries....cant forget 1985 benson&hedges cup...i used to get up early in the morning around 3am or so and travel around 15 kms along with my uncle in hero majestic bike to see those matches...just because tv was there in another uncle house...this happened in tirunelveli...cant forget those days...

Just to give you ground level feedback, while I spend time listening to you or Kapil, I detest 10000% the current Cricket scene in India with the arrogant Virat Kohli (asking Indians to leave India if they want to admire foreign players). So I have completely- and totally - do not WASTE even a minute on cricket now. Also there is toooooo much Cricket now making it an uncouth money machine. It was very interesting to listen to your reminiscences. I have during my college days used to listen to running commentary when Gavaskar and F Engineer would be opening. We used to name Gavaskar as Kattai Mannan. But what amount of patience and perseverance he must be having. Hats off to Gavaskar.
Patience needed for the batsman , you would understand than anyone else, because you never had😂. I had a flicker of you, when I was younger. watch you play anytime over sunny. after all you were the one hitting over fielders head, before Sanath , viru and so on . You are a legend . I hv heard you play on Radio in your debut match ....seen you plunder the srilankans at bangalore in 1982 when you scored 93 in no time in a one day match, saw you puffing away to glory on that glorious day in 1983, still remember my father distributing sweets in the neighbourhood when you scored a hundred against australia in a test match most probsbly in 1986..your assault on Imran khan at chepauk is still fresh...it was u for whom we used to watch a match.....and i now hope that you will come up with another splendid innings here..

Thalaiva, apart from sunny sir batting, I remember him for his nice commentary " ho ho ho ho" when vvs drove straight down the grond during aus tour, he is a great character..
My experience at cheapauk, I visit all international matches since 99, sehwag was blistering against England in the test 2008(famous for sachin yuvraj partnership that took us through), sunny was njoying in the old D stand commentary box, cheering us, dancing to the D stand drum beats, it was a vera level experience.... Sunny at his best.. ( while ravi was busy waving to the female fans and entertaining autographs, typical ravi😁😁😁)
As Srikanth said I was also there at Loyola College ground to see Gavaskar ! It was like a festival with more than 10000 persons ! Gavaskar was escorted to the pitch by police ! He played well ! Some of his shots were amezing ! But he was brilliantly caught by KVR Murthy and so we could not see much ! Everyone was scolding murthy for holding that catch !
