  • In this video I discuss the highest point of natural elevation, be it the highest mountain, hill, or otherwise, in each South American country. This vast continent of many geographic extremes might be the most intriguing Highest Points episode yet. Don't forget to subscribe if you enjoy it, and thanks for watching!

    There is nothing better to look at than an "assortment of Andian apexes". Big like as always! I also love it that you included some territories that would otherwise fit into none of the videos. These remote places are often interesting and strikingly beautiful!

    This video was the high point of my day!
    Also interesting to see some incredibly obscure high points up in the North and off the continent. Maybe this video will inspire some brave people to summit them!

    Crazy how many similarly high mountains there are spread across such a long mountain range in the Andes. thousands of kilometers apart you can find a crazy high peak in all the countries that include a part of the Andes. I say that as a European, for whom 4810m of elevation are already pretty extreme and who suffered through the climb to the summit of 3700m high Pico del Teide (admittedly only from the cable car station at around 3550m) without any acclimatisation. The Andes are truly gigantic (and so beautiful with the combination of volcanic landscapes, classic alpine regions, coastal mountains, deserts, and tropical parts!).

    Well researched video. I've done tons of research on the Andes and well over half my fun facts on the peaks in question were already included. One that wasn't: Chile's high point is the second summit of Ojos Del Salado. With only 85m topographic prominence, it's one of only two country high points above 1500m with insufficient prominence to qualify as a separate mountain under most accepted definitions. The other being Mafadi, the highest point in South Africa, which is usually listed as having around 110m (75m according to my GPS, but those aren't accurate enough for a measurement like this). This holds even if a requirement of 7% prominence relative to height is required, which both peaks are well below, so these two summits aren't even close compared to the other country high points above 1500m in terms of prominence.

    TresKandu is probably most challenging hill I ever hiked/climbed up. Very steap, many spiders, narrow trail, and a long way to even get there from the nearest save to reach parking spot. I suggest to rent one of those cow wagons of the locals to get to the start of the climb.

  • @robinier

    Cool video and helps to see pics of the mountains! Fun fact Pico da Bandeira in eastern Brazil was believed to be the country's highest until the 60s or 70s; goes to show how inaccessible the Guiana Highlands and the Amazon are.
    For Spanish (and Portuguese) stress the second-to-last syllable if it ends in a vowel (**jalapeño**) or -s (**maracas**). If there's an accent, stress it instead (**adiós**).
    So **Bolívar** is closer to **boh-LEE-var** in Spanish.

    It's so interesting how little is known about a few of these peaks! I guess with the remoteness/inaccessibility it makes sense. People are honestly so impressive for exploring and summiting these crazy places though

    • @ghaznavid
      @ghaznavid 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's a guy named John Biggar who is trying to summit every hikable 6000+m peak in the Andes. It's crazy how many easy but huge mountains there are in that part of the world. Depending on the list, there are about 100 mountains above 6000m in South America (400m prominence definition), and something like 65 of them are non-technical hikes. Well, the terrain is non-technical; weather and thin air are huge factors on those mountains. Most of the more technical 6000ers are in the Cordillera Huayhuash and Cordillera Blanca in Peru - which looks insanely impressive, and I'm hoping to visit soon.

    • @puttytat007
      @puttytat007 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ghaznavid Not easy at all. They look easy. Many have died on the Chimborazo preparing for Everest. Never underestimate the mountains.

    • @ghaznavid
      @ghaznavid 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@puttytat007 Chimborazo is at least moderately technical and has major avalanche risk. Peaks like Chachani in Peru or El Muerto in Argentina are purely hiking and for most of the year don't even have snow or ice on them. One should not underestimate a mountain under any circumstances, but basically every purely hiking 6000er on the planet is in the Andes. There are relatively easy 6000ers out there, but Island Peak, Mera etc all at least require crampons and some form of protection against falling into crevasses. Ampato is purely hiking and only requires warm clothing and being properly acclimatised.

    French Guiana I technically not a territory, but an overseas region of France, which means that it has the same governance as mainland France. As in being part of the EU, eurozone, NATO and ESA. However French Guiana is not part of the schengin area, most likely because it isn't as easy to get to.
    French Guiana is an integral part of France, a lot like what Alaska and Hawaii are to the United States, eventhough its disconnected, that doesn't make it less French than Corsica. French Guiana is actually very important to France in terms of space exploration, due to its very close proximity to the equator. Due to French Guiana being France proper, it has a higher GDP per capita than any other South American country.
