Ironically, as “confused” as they were by the menu, by getting pulled pork and pulled chicken, this is probably the closest they’ve ever been to getting what you’re supposed to get at a BBQ joint (ribs, brisket, etc.)
That’s funny. When people visit London on video I’m always thinking ‘No, don’t go down that street, go down that one !” Or “That’s not an English breakfast !”.
The best cornbread is made in a cast iron skillet cut it like a slice of pie and put a big piece of butter on top. Also North Carolina BBQ is named the best in the country. You need to try it with the vinegar based sauce.
Ugh no, not a vinegar person, much prefer Memphis or Kansas City style. But every region claims it’s the best, guess it what your used to and I’ve tried nearly every kind I can find all over this country. When someone asks for a barbecue recommendation first thing I ask is do you prefer sweet foods, spicy foods, how do you feel about mustard, pickles, coleslaw, do you want it dry or dripping wet? Only the answers can determine what you like. Me I don’t like mustard on anything other than sausage, hot dogs or ham, can’t stand soggy buns but not dry either, and I can’t tolerate spicy hot foods. So I prefer a sweeter, not spicy BBQ with some sauce and on pulled sandwiches always slaw unless it’s a vinegar slaw then I pass.
The coleslaw was on the sandwich I believe. It looked like it when they brought it to you. Some places do that instead of it being on the side so when they ask if you want slaw they mean do you want it on the sandwich.
Judging by how y’all said you don’t think you can compare this to Texas barbecue, I think you still do not understand what Americans mean by barbecue. Vegetables are vegetables, you get them at a barbecue restaurant or you get them at a meat & 3. Your understanding of the word barbecue is what we would call a cook out. The literal thing you cook food on outside you call a barbecue. That is known as a grill in America! So your barbecue is to us “grilling out” or a cookout. In America, the word barbecue refers to meat, specifically pork. This is the first time I’ve seen either of you get pork for which I am proud of you! Pulled pork is the most quintessential, basic form of barbecue in this country. What makes meat barbecue is the way it is cooked. If it is cooked in a smoker, then it is barbecue. A smoker is kind of like a grill but it has this thing called a smoker attached. I do not know how to describe a smoker but it basically pumps smoke into an enclosed area or grill so the meat will taste like the smoke. Barbecue was cooked at a low temperature for several hours to really infuse this smoky flavor. Things like ribs and brisket can also be smoked. But pork is your original purest form a barbecue. And of course the other thing that makes it barbecue is the sauce. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk lol. I know I’m going overboard and it ain’t that serious but the English language came from y’all and this is one of the few words y’all didn’t come up with so I have to talk this as seriously as I would naming my child!! LOL I’m just KIDDING
Well that must be from the influence of Europeans and Australians from social media etc.. and our world coming together and becoming smaller that way. Because in America, you would only call it “a barbecue“ if you were actually barbecuing, and not grilling.
If you don't see it on the menu (like just the pulled chicken) it's totally fine to order the sandwich without the bun...we do it all the time here in the US.
the coleslaw was actually on your sandwich. Also we don't differentiate the names of sandwiches by the bread, usually. In America a hamburger made of ground beef is the only thing we call a burger. Everything else is a sandwich.
Any ground meat or direct ground meat substitute (fake ground meat) has become a "burger". No sliced meat or intact hunk of meat. Actually stuff like spam and pate, which might technically be ground, might be the exception.
We call it a sandwich and not a burger because a burger is a formed patty. Sandwiches are any filling between two slices of bread. A Jibarrito is a sandwich, too but instead of bread they use two flattened, fried plantain slices.
Next neighborhood to hit is Germantown. There are plenty of restaurants and activities to get into. The one restaurant that you cannot miss up there is Monell's. It's literally like having dinner at your favorite Grandma's house. How good are they? They served quarter fried chicken in a complimentary basket treat. That good.
@9:50 To us burger refers to the type of meat, not the type of bread. You can take a hamburger patty and slap it between two pieces of sliced white bread and that's still a burger, but a piece of chicken or pulled pork on a hamburger bun is a sandwich. Basically a burger has to be ground meat (typically beef, but it can be turkey or the like) formed into a patty.
Y'all don't be so self conscious about asking for a "doggie bag" or "to go box" just about everyone that can't finish their meal does it. You paid for it so you may as well take it home and finish it later. Anyway....greetings from Florida. I really enjoy your videos. I think you and Joel are hilarious.
I use burger for anything that is ground, so if I had a sandwich made with ground chicken, that would be a burger to me. A chicken breast or thigh is a sandwich. But I’ve noticed over the years that J&L call anything on a bun a burger. I have a friend who lives in Toronto who does the same.
LOL! I had to pause at the sweet tea when I saw that you had no ice in your cup. That is the cutest! Southern sweet tea is rooted as a cooling beverage to refresh one in the intense heat of the deep south. It is brewed strong, made extra sweet, and served over lots of ice. When the ice melts and the beverage is diluted, it maintains its lovely flavor and can be enjoyed or sipped while relaxing on a shady porch or laboring in a field under an intense sun. It's not healthy, but it is delicious and refreshing! I'm really enjoying your vlogs. Blessings!
Joel might like the southern hush puppy or Red Lobster's biscuits better than. ordinary corn bread. Burger is more a description of the meat than the bun--any bread with a filler is a sandwich to most.
I live a three minute walk from a different Edley’s, so I’m pretty familiar with their menu, and you can get the chicken platter on the bone or pulled. I love their baked beans, so I agree with Joel on that, and since I grew up with cornbread, I like it a lot. One of the other comments referred to this is a big chain, and Edley’s is not - it’s a local restaurant with I think five locations, three of them in Nashville. I know a lot of people are saying you don’t really get barbecue unless it’s pork, but I grew up with it and I prefer barbecued chicken myself.
Lia, just a note: I believe your coleslaw was on the bbq sandwich. I live in Illinois, but I've been to a bbq place here that will put coleslaw on the sandwich if you'd like.
Cornbread can be prepared several ways. It looks like you were eating cake-like cornbread which my grandmother didn't approve of! At our house we had thin, almost-fried cornbread which was served brown and crispy. Betcha you would like it better,!
The best cornbread is made in a cast iron skillet. Browns the back side like regular baking pans can't. Yes, cornbread should not be like cake! If you want it sweetened, then add it on later.
In the U.S. a burger is made with ground (minced) meat and usually grilled. For example, if you order a chicken sandwich you'll get an actual piece of chicken that has been grilled or sauteed and served on a 'hamburger' bun. If you order a chicken burger the chicken will be ground chicken (minced) just like a beef burger and also served on a hamburger bun.
You guys need some eastern NC bbq! Cornbread is made in different ways depending on the cook... get a bag of cornmeal and follow the directions exactly... and please no sweet cornbread... also sweet tea is sometimes made with too much sugar if I know a place has super sweet tea I order it half sweet half unsweetened and you have to have ice and squeeze of lemon. There’s even a tea called Arnold Palmer (the golfer) it’s sweet tea and lemonade. 😋
Garbanzo beans are chickpeas. I find restaurant sweet tea too sweet, so I either mix it with unsweetened or just have unsweetened tea. If I have iced tea as my beverage that is.
You need to put butter on corn bread. I only eat it with chili. Garbanzo beans are also called Chick Peas. Burger is a hamburger. Anything else is a sandwich.
Someone might have mentioned this in the comments already but I'm too lazy to read through them all to see... When they ask you if you want slaw with your sandwich it usually means on the sandwich not an extra side with your meal and it looked like you had coleslaw on it (I had to scroll back to look at it when the top bun was off to check). Glad you enjoyed most of your meal. It looked really good.
Mmm...looks good. I am not sure they can say they are the best in Tennessee...there are (were?) some great BBQ places in Memphis, TN. You said you didn't get the coleslaw. Often when you get a pulled pork sandwich with slaw, they put the coleslaw right on the sandwich rather than on the side. It cuts some of the sweetness of the barbeque sauce and makes the sandwich a little juicier.
Joel and Lia have a trend. Whenever they visit a restaurant that claims to be the best, they either believe it, or they are being sarcastic about it (in which case the joke is on me 😆). You should see how many places in New York claim they have the best pizza.
Memphis is the city for barbecue in Tennessee. The Rendezvous is legendary. But it also has many amazing hole-in-the wall places like Payne's, Central and A&R.
Lia I am from Tennessee and hate sweet tea but love tea otherwise. I either cut sweet with unsweet , make an Arnold Palmer (tea and lemonade) or if the place has good tea I’ll just do unsweet iced tea. I don’t put sugar in my regular hot tea either just creamer 😂 Joel I also don’t really like cornbread; however the best way to eat it is almost like a sponge with beans or some other veg that is in a bit of a broth to sop up the liquid. However I do like sweet cornbread which is a bit sacrilegious here in the south.
Burger is short for Hamburger meat. Since there isn't such a thing as "Chickenburger", "Porkburger" or "Fishburger" meat, that's why we call them sandwiches and would never say "Chicken burger" nor "Fish burger" since there is no beef (hamburger) in them. You'd never go to the market and ask to buy a pound of "chickenburger". But Hamburger is a staple of many, many meals, from hamburgers, tacos, chili, spaghetti, meatloaf, etc. But the sandwich, if it's not made of hamburger, we don't call it a 'burger. It's a sandwich. ;)
The British insistence that ANY meat on a bun is a burger always makes me howl with laughter. They CREATED the word "Sandwich" but refuse to use it for much else besides Cucumbers on bread.
to be fair, ANY meat between buns is considered to be a "burger". not sure why you would even question that. this is 100% a american term. in the UK, they would not call everything a burger.
@@orion7741 So you think sliced meat on a bun is a burger? It's really just a sandwich. I'm certainly not denying it's an American term. The American definition is basically that any ground meat or ground meat substitute formed raw into a patty and then cooked in that shape is a burger. It doesn't even technically have to include bread. Meatloaf - not a burger (because of the shape--its a loaf and you slice it to serve it) Sliced Turkey Breast on a bun (or any kind of sliced meat) - not a burger Ground Beyond or Impossible meat substitute formed into a patty - is a burger Ground Turkey or Ground Chicken formed into a patty - is a burger Pulled Pork on a bun - not a burger (Flat) Sausage patty - technically a burger, although it seems to be a rare exception where Americans don't usually call it such Boneless chicken breast on a bun - not a burger hunk of steak on a bun - not a burger Salisbury Steaks - technically burgers, but probably the other big exception besides sausage patties where people don't admit it
Cornbread isn’t meant to be eaten on it’s own. You butter it or dunk it in whatever you’re eating. You also use it to sop up the juices on your plate or bowl. Like dunking it in or or sopping up bean juice, with buttered cornbread. Heaven😅😊
It's been mentioned before, but the best "Tennessee" BBQ is in Memphis. You could make a series out of trying different Memphis BBQ restaurants, they're all that good. Nashville is not a BBQ capital, but it's certainly going to be better than what you can get in London. It's awesome to see you guys giving it a try.
I couldn't eat cornbread plain like that either. While it's hot I would split it in half and put butter on it. Then I would pour some honey on it. Way better that way.
So glad you finally made it so close to MY home State of Georgia. Come to Georgia next time for BBQ AND cornbread, Joel! We Georgians make the greatest cornbread in the Southeast!!! Love you guys and thanks for touring the Southern United States!!
Grits and cornbread are both ground corn so Joel, you're basically eating grits with eggs and baking soda that's baked (some people don't add the raising agent).
Eastern BBQ (Alabama, Carolina, and Nashville) is more about the pulled pork. Central US (Kansas City, Memphis, and St Louis) is about the pork ribs and burnt ends. Texas is about the beef (brisket, ribs, etc..). Of course you can find all types of items at each with smoked chicken, smoked turkey, and sausage usually all over too.
You might like your drinks better with ice. The sweet tea definitely needs ice and a little squirt of lemon. Just fill your glass with ice first and then put your drink in. That is the way most people in America do it. I loved the video! Keep up the great work guys! ❤️❤️❤️
Hey y’all! There are many types of bbq, depends on the region of the country. The same with cornbread. Some are savory, some and mild, some are spicy, and my favorite SWEET CORNBREAD from the real south. It is almost like cake. Buttery lightly sweet goodness. You can drizzle honey in it also. Some is made with sweet corn. Another fab is warm cornbread pudding omg what a treat!
Joel, cornbread does it's best when dunked in the juices of slow cooked veggies like turnip or collard greens...use it to mop up that delicious pot likker!

What is it with these BBQ places when it comes to the sauce? I'm looking at both of yours, where's the BBQ, didn't even see any on the table, that's just wrong. In the future, whatever BBQ state you visit, always ask for more sauce, lol!
I love Nashville and a warm welcome to all the Nashville and Middle Tennessee transplants but the best bbq in Tennessee is still in western Tennessee. That is why the style of bbq you are eating in Nashville is Memphis style BBQ cooked in Nashville. If you want real Tennessee bbq you will have to drive 210 miles west. Nashville is known more for meat and threes and hot chicken. West Tennesseans eat spicy chicken. Our state is known for having completely different cultures in each of its three divisions and we are very proud of that.
Quit ordering foods you can get in the UK. I laughed out loud when you ordered green beans. Collard, turnip, or mustard greens are very good when prepared properly. Crumble your cornbread in the bowl and eat as a soup.
@Lia when you ordered the pulled pork and he asked if you wanted slaw he was talking about slaw ON your sandwich. I thought I saw it on there when you showed us your plate. I live in Nashville and we put slaw on bbq sandwiches. :)
Baked beans are not Garbonzo (name is of Spanish origin) beans (aka: chickpeas) which are entirely different from the beans used in southern baked beans (Navy beans.) The larger dark red beans are kidney beans in Edley's BBQ beans. Baked beans in the US usually has bacon pieces in it.
Joel and Lia are fun. I've never had a better cornbread than Trader Joe's Brand cornbread that comes with the ingredients then you assemble and bake. It is the best!
Cornbread is best made with cornmeal, milk, egg, a spoon of mayo, hot grease. Baked in an iron skillet and eaten crumbled up with crockpot brown or white bean and bean juice on top of greens that were cooked with fat back. Selmer, Tn

@@davidwas1it just seems like a waste of money and food to not take your leftovers home with you to eat later. That is if your going straight home after you eat and not other places.
It’s so acceptable in the states; especially, in the South to request a take away box. Servings are not small by European means.
I live in Nashville and have been to Edley's many times. If I could've gone with you (knowing your individual tastes) I could've helped you order. It looks like you both enjoyed it, but I think we could've tweaked your orders a bit to make your meal better. Plus, you would've had someone who could explain the foods and how they're prepared. Oh well...hope you enjoyed it!, and I hope you make your way back to Nashville again some day!
Grits (ground corn) were first introduced to the settlers in the 1600s.by native Americans and became a staple in the south.
Your sweet tea glass should be filled with ice. In the south we drink ICED sweet tea.
The best cornbread is made in a cast iron skillet cut it like a slice of pie and put a big piece of butter on top. Also North Carolina BBQ is named the best in the country. You need to try it with the vinegar based sauce.
Born in Greenville now living in Raleigh and I couldn't agree more! NC bbq with the vinegar base is the best!
Nope. Texas bbq is the best. Beef, of course.
My guilty pleasure is Joel and Lia trying BBQ.
Beans~
Greens~
Cornbread~
Fried Potatoes~
Sliced Tomatos~
I make my cornbread with bacon grease, in an iron skillet in a hit oven.
Memphis is the place of Tennessee barbecue. Nashville is pretty good, but there is no comparison to Memphis.
I live in Nash and I agree.
Good made hush-puppies, are a great form of corn bread. Should try those, usually have bits of onion in them.
You got the f'n chicken again. You can not tell the difference between the regional bbq places if you keep getting the fucking chicken
If you don't see it on the menu (like just the pulled chicken) it's totally fine to order the sandwich without the bun...we do it all the time here in the US.
You need to fill the glass with ice which will water it down so it is only half as sweet tasting.
The best way to eat cornbread is warm with butter on it.
Lots of butter!
the coleslaw was actually on your sandwich.
@@Wiley_Coyote It's all trying to be a hamburger, anyway.
Personally i like cornbread with greens, such as collard or turnip greens.
Especially to soak up the juice.
@@gawainethefirst YES
@@gawainethefirst which is properly called pot liquor. Yum!
That good.
Corn bread is really good when it has bits of corn in it and is slathered with honey butter,
Lia, you have to put ICE in the sweet tea. It balances out the sweetness!!!!
Garbanzo bean is just Spanish for chick peas. kidney beans are red shaped like kidney totally different.
I said the same thing. Should’ve scrolled down further.
Memphis BBQ is different. It’s a dry rub. Eastern Tennessee BBQ is mustard and molasses based. Western North Carolina is vinegar based.
We generally only call it a "burger" if it's a standard beef patty. Also if you ever go to texas, go with the beef brisket
I use burger for anything that is ground, so if I had a sandwich made with ground chicken, that would be a burger to me. A chicken breast or thigh is a sandwich. But I’ve noticed over the years that J&L call anything on a bun a burger. I have a friend who lives in Toronto who does the same.
They did go to Texas a couple of years ago and had barbeque there. Maybe not brisket though. Brisket is very much a Texas thing.
I was going to suggest hushpuppies, too.
In the South, Mac and cheese is a vegetable. lol
Proper sweet tea should have ice in it. Gsrbonzo beans are chick peas.
Try cornbread with butter and honey on it.
Glad you got a chance to have our baked beans!
Basically, if it's a patty of ground beef, it's a burger no matter what else is contiguous to it; if it's not a patty of ground beef, it's a sandwich.
You guys just BEAM on the streets of Nashville... it really agrees with you! Hopefully you can do a part 2!
I love corn bread!!! And I really appreciate Joel trying to love corn bread!!! Keep trying I'm sure there's one out there!
I find the best way to eat cornbread is crumbled up in a bowl of pinto beans or a bowl of vegetable soup.
Lia I am from Tennessee and hate sweet tea but love tea otherwise. I either cut sweet with unsweet , make an Arnold Palmer (tea and lemonade) or if the place has good tea I’ll just do unsweet iced tea. I don’t put sugar in my regular hot tea either just creamer 😂
Joel I also don’t really like cornbread; however the best way to eat it is almost like a sponge with beans or some other veg that is in a bit of a broth to sop up the liquid. However I do like sweet cornbread which is a bit sacrilegious here in the south.
Garbanzo beans are chick peas, my lovies…and real southern corn bread is fried ❤️
It's a sandwich. ;)
@@irenewills9736 yes, some do .
I guess in that way, all burgers are sandwiches but not all sandwiches are burgers.
;)
Joel, try putting butter on the cornbread, if its still warm.
I usually use quite a bit of butter on cornbread when it’s.warm.
Garbanzo Beans is another word for Chickpeas
The British insistence that ANY meat on a bun is a burger always makes me howl with laughter. They CREATED the word "Sandwich" but refuse to use it for much else besides Cucumbers on bread.
I lived in Australia and it was the same way there! Very odd
to be fair, ANY meat between buns is considered to be a "burger". not sure why you would even question that. this is 100% a american term. in the UK, they would not call everything a burger.
Meatloaf - not a burger (because of the shape--its a loaf and you slice it to serve it)
Sliced Turkey Breast on a bun (or any kind of sliced meat) - not a burger
Ground Beyond or Impossible meat substitute formed into a patty - is a burger
Ground Turkey or Ground Chicken formed into a patty - is a burger
Pulled Pork on a bun - not a burger
(Flat) Sausage patty - technically a burger, although it seems to be a rare exception where Americans don't usually call it such
Boneless chicken breast on a bun - not a burger
hunk of steak on a bun - not a burger
Salisbury Steaks - technically burgers, but probably the other big exception besides sausage patties where people don't admit it
Lia thought she didn’t get her Cole slaw. But it was on her sandwich.
Cornbread isn’t meant to be eaten on it’s own. You butter it or dunk it in whatever you’re eating. You also use it to sop up the juices on your plate or bowl. Like dunking it in or or sopping up bean juice, with buttered cornbread. Heaven😅😊
As a englishman living in florida I can't take to icetea yuk American barbecue I find really nice
Your cornbread should be warm enough that you cut down the middle and put butter on it so it melts. So good.
Corn bread tastes best dipped into things like mashed potatoes or your baked beans
Or pot likker from greens.
That cornbread looks delicous!delicious!. BBQ pork or chicken always taste good with coleslaw!
Absolutely agree!!!
Cornbread varies a lot. My cornbread has salsa in it for a zesty kick. Also, adding some flour helps it stay together better.
Joel, cornbread does it's best when dunked in the juices of slow cooked veggies like turnip or collard greens...use it to mop up that delicious pot likker!
Garbanzo beans are chick peas, what hummus is made from.
Omg I luv Edleys!!! You should have tried the Banana Pudding!! It's a Tennessee staple dessert but you didn't go wrong with the Cookies at all!!
Loved all of your Nashville videos! Great place & great content of course. Tyvm!
You missed the collard greens as in collard greens and cornbread.
There was a big X on the menu next to the collard greens so it looks like they were off the menu when Joel & Lia visited :(
God, I love cornbread with collard greens. When I was little, my mother would open a can of baked beans, plop them into a pan and then ADD brown sugar, lol. Very sweet. Have the two of you ever tried banana pudding with 'nilla wafers???? My mother makes the BEST!
There is no wrong way to eat BBQ. And you picked some delicious sandwiches. But would it kill you to at least try ribs and brisket?
Quit ordering foods you can get in the UK. I laughed out loud when you ordered green beans. Collard, turnip, or mustard greens are very good when prepared properly. Crumble your cornbread in the bowl and eat as a soup.
@Lia when you ordered the pulled pork and he asked if you wanted slaw he was talking about slaw ON your sandwich. I thought I saw it on there when you showed us your plate. I live in Nashville and we put slaw on bbq sandwiches. :)
As someone who lives in Nashville, Edley's really is one of the best!
Selmer, Tn
As a middle TN native, so glad yawl hit the Edleys BBQ! Out of all the BBQ joints around here, Edleys does the meats AND the sides RIGHT. They just know how to cook. Hope yawl had fun around Nash.
It all looked terrible
