  • In 1971, the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Houston wide receiver Elmo Wright in the first round, thinking that he was 100% healthy and was medically fine. Turns out... that was the furthest thing from the truth

The Bills drafted JD Hill, the Steelers drafted Frank Lewis in 1971.

Good video, jg9! Ouch! You made a pun about Elmo wright-I remember his touchdown dance-he was really good at it after scoring-plus the clips about the 1971 season with the game against the Washington team-he didn’t score the winning touchdown-Otis Taylor did-too bad about him but he was exciting in his time with th the chiefs! 😊😊😊😊😊😊

I like how you refuse to call the Washington team the redskins but have no problem calling the Kansas City team the CHIEFS

Thank goodness something like this wouldn't happen today. If the then-unserious Falcons knew something was up with Wright's knee, that says a lot about the Chiefs' due diligence (or the lack thereof).

I know Frank Lewis was already mentioned being drafted by the Steelers in a previous comment. Later on in his career, he played for buffalo, making a pro bowl with them in 1981

You'd think even in 1971 that teams would do routine medical exams on draft prospects.

As you’ve said in other videos the pre-Draft evaluation process was more crude back then. Makes me think that Wright told the Falcons about his injury because he didn’t want to be drafted by them. But he didn’t mind being drafted by the Chiefs.
As for John Wayne, well he did play college football at USC…

I’m _shocked_ that a NFL player would be untruthful. Stunned. Why this defiles the great tradition of living in honesty exemplified by Bret Favre, O.J. Simpson and Aaron Rogers !

I did a bit of sleuthing since I didn't see anyone in the comments answer the case question. Pittsburgh and Buffalo are the only other teams aside from Kansas City to draft a wide receiver in the first round of the 1971 draft. Buffalo took J. D. Hill at pick #4 and Pittsburgh took Frank Lewis with pick #8.

If Elmo Wright genuinely did lie about his health status, it wouldn’t be the first time you’ve done a video about someone associated with the Chiefs lying about something important in order to be with them, since you did a video about former Chiefs coach Frank Gansz lying about his entire background to get hired as coach in 1987.
