I have an interesting story about Vagrant Story that I would like to share. Now, I got a Sega Dreamcast at launch as I often do with every console release and really wasn't playing many PSX games anymore. I was also salivating at the prospect of a launch PS2 on the horizon that I did get so Vagrant Story wasn't even on my radar. However my brother was still all about the PlayStation and couldn't stop talking about it. Even when I bought him (little brother) his Dreamcast he wanted those sweet, sweet JRPG's and I can't blame him. Roughly two weeks before Vagrant Story released he was headed home from school (10th grader, walker) when a drunk driver jumped a curb and hit him going over 40MPH sending him flying into a grassy area in a person's front yard. He was air flighted to an emergency room and aside from a pair of broken legs he was okay. Let me tell you...when I found out I went to the scene and tried to get at that morher...family friendly channel. It took 4 cops and pepper spray to stop me from getting to the driver because I was going to kill him and I am not kidding. Thankfully, I wasn't arrested and the cops just calmed me down and told me he was okay. At any rate, my parents were already at the hospital and I knew he was going to be okay...it was time for the impossible mission. I set out to see if I could somehow get him a copy of Vagrant Story early. I went everywhere trying to find that game but of course at two full weeks no one was going to have it. After roughly 5 hours of this I decided to head to Blockbuster Video to rent a bunch of stuff for us because I'll be damned if I let my brother hanging in a hospital with nothing to do and I had a wild idea...what if Blockbuster had it. I went up to the counter and asked the checkout guy and of course he said no way, not at two weeks. He asked me why I needed it so badly and I told him about my brother, he called his manager over and told him my story. The yard my brother landed in after the accident was his! He was so happy my brother was okay that he shared with me a little inside secret...he had 4 copies in storage waiting to be put out on release. He agreed to sell me the game with a 25 dollar upcharge to cover the rental fees two weeks would cover and I got the game! I immediately flew back to my parents house, packed up a 27 inch TV, PlayStation, games, controllers, memory cards, and of course snacks. I called off of work for a full week and headed for the hospital. When I got there and handed him that game his demeanor changed from 'man my day sucks' to "How did you pull this off?!" I wound up bringing in a second TV (mine) and my Dreamcast making it look like a mini arcade. My girlfriend at the time was a gamer and she joined in the fun as well as a group of my friends. His room was jumping 24/7 until they kicked us all out. He made a full recovery and we still game like crazy today. Good times, good times.
I can't stress enough how terrible Legend of Mana is. It's quite simply one of the worst video games ever made. If you like Secret of Mana or Seiken Densetsu 3/Trials of Mana, Legend feels like a poor knockoff. But worse. Stay far from it.
While I have never beaten it (Zophar is a nightmare) Lunar 2 Eternal Blue Complete is my favorite game featured in this video. Vandal Hearts is another favorite of mine. I like that the variety of winning conditions is greater than Final Fantasy Tactics and I believe the battles require more careful planning as well.
Includes Breath of Fire 3, doesn't mention Dragon Gene system... this is one of my top favorite rpgs. Couldn't even tell you how many times I've played through. Also, i don't think I ever completed the Bromide collection, there were several post-game bosses I was still working towards. ---- Legend of Mana - Limited budget for me meant I never played this one, it does look cool, and I might eventually find a copy as this one doesn't seem to be astronomical to find. ---- Final Fantasy VIII - Great game, and most of the detractors were people who were expecting too much after Final Fantasy VII. Square seems to reinvent the wheel with every Final Fantasy and for some this was too divergent from what they wanted/expected. There's a great game here, just not everyone's cup of tea. ---- Legend of Legaia - I know I commented on this on one of your other videos... can't remember what I said there, but it should apply here. ---- Breath of Fire 3 - Great game, and one that benefitted from the series jump from SNES to PlayStation.

I saved up for Jade cocoon as a kid I was a huge Pokémon fan growing up and I wanted more of this catching monster phenom during that time omg what a disgrace and disappointment that game was utter garbage
Legend of Mana is not only NOT a must have RPG, it's in fact one of the ABSOLUTE worst video games ever created. It's heinously bad and even the creators were so embarrassed, they've denounced the game and removed it from the official canon. The game is NOT creative or unique at all. The gameplay is a poor approximation of its predecessors Seiken Densetsu 2 and 3 (Secret of Mana and its sequel) and the multiplayer is downright broken. The ability to build the world is just complete bullshit. You literally just find items and drop them onto a world map where you select your location from a drop down menu. It has no impact on anything other than the order in which you pursue some side quests, which is the entire game, as it has no actual narrative, no real characters and no development.
@@lilstrawhat He's mistaken. It's terrible. It's not that it's just flawed or different, it flouts everything that the series had stood for and replaces it with things that are far worse. Like literally any bad game, there will always be people who insist it's good, but there's a reason the creators are embarrassed by it and removed it from the series chronology. It's just that bad.
It’s nice to finally see Legend of Legia put on a list

@@jowellgamingshow6907
Don't suppose you can list the games covered in the description?
Some of these still hold graphically, especially Vagrant Story.
Wish we could get a modern remaster!
ff8, ff9, legend of dragoon, and chrono cross all still look amazing to me.
Especially Chrono Cross!
@@thatvideogamesshow chrono cross could be my favorite ps1 rpg if it didn't have such a boring combat system. i was hoping for a combat system similar to trigger but deeper but they put in that bland and boring system for whatever reason. i know it's no less deep than a lot of the good ps1 rpgs, but something about the combat in cross just bores me more than those other games.

@@thatvideogamesshow when i was 6 years old, me and my brother was a huge fan of RPG games
Have each of these.
I think Chrono Cross should be included on this list.
I love vandal hearts!!!!!
Guess Indivisible was heavily inspired by Valkyrie Profile.
Yeah it was one of the inspirations!
Two lists and no mention of either Tales games, either Breath of Fire game, FF Tactics, Persona 2, Front Mission 3, or Arc the Lad...
arc the lad is mentioned in another video on rpgs
eternal blue one of the best jrpg
Go part 3.))
Am I the only one who doesn't care about graphics as long as the game is fun
me to a point. It depends on the graphic style and other things. For example, ill still play WWE Smackdown 2 over some of the newer wrestling games even if the gfx look like shit now (especially on a HD tv)
@@Necrowolf81 in some games the content is even greater than the graphics
More must have RPG titles: Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Digimon World 3, Front Mission 3, Threads of Fate, Parasite Eve, Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, Saga Frontier 2, Sayuki Journey West, Tales of Eternia, Vanguard Bandits
Great choices Rui!
Did anyone else besides me enjoy Alundra 2?
LEGEND OF MANA IS THE BEST!
we need ff8 open world style
i swear i used to play a game where the town the main character used to live in was burnt i dont remember the name of it but if you do please tell me its slowly killing me lolz
That could be suikoden 2?? The town burns down at the beginning if I remember rightly!
Could be tales of phantasia
My bad MC in Xenogears blows the burning town away
Suikoden I and II.........How could you miss????
Suikoden 2 is on the first video but i dont know how he ignores part 1
I expected to find xenogears in this video, it is a really good game even today, I'm playing it and I like it really much
Included on part 1
@@thatvideogamesshow my bad, I didn't noticed it
To each his own of course, but I never get the love for Final Fantasy VIII. I love the music and the FMVs are really good, but that's about it. Oh, and the fact that it's not Final Fantasy XIII is a big plus, lol.
Person: I'll NEVER understand the love for this game!
Same person: I fucking love the music.
Haha yeah screw XIII 😅😅
@@lilstrawhat Lol, yup, I'd rather listen to the soundtrack than having to play the game.
@@n00bextraordinaire92 to be fair I'd love it if it got the ff7r treatment. I do think it was the music that made me fall in love with it as a kid for sure. That and the graphics at the time were legit af. I got it on the pizza hut demo disk in 98 along with ape escape haha
@@lilstrawhat I actually thought of something else I like from the game. Triple Triad. That remake you want better have it. Triple Triad with flashy animations on PS5. But seriously, I can imagine you'd like to see a remake if you enjoyed the remake of VII. They gave a lot of characters a decent backstory and way more to do. Great game!
arc the lad?
i wish i could rewind time and stop development of the PS2... technological progress killed good stories and quality games
um yeah no. There are plenty of games with good stories that aren't even rpgs like Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone. As far as RPGs there are plenty like Ni No Kuni 2 (possibly one, haven't played it yet)
Where’s persona 2
Best GBA RPG's next?
Oooo good shout! 🙂
I saved up for Jade cocoon as a kid I was a huge Pokémon fan growing up and I wanted more of this catching monster phenom during that time omg what a disgrace and disappointment that game was utter garbage
You owe it to yourself to play all these game. Cost of listed games....... $3000. 😂
some of them you can get digitally on ps3/vita. Of course there's always roms
Where is the Arc the Lad trilogy ?
Vagrant Story is god awful. I feel like people who think it's amazing haven't played it in 20 years.
Agreed. It was a lot of fun 20 years ago, but the structure and combat don't hold up nearly as well as its turn based counterparts from the same era.
Not even a little good?
@@lilstrawhat Not even a little.
lilcoco no, it IS good. it does have some flaws but it’s a different experience. give it a try.
@@AdriRayToshiro oh I will I just honestly thought it was hilarious how much hate this guy threw it's way 😂 like so negative dude relax
Legend of Legaia is the best RPG . Amazing story and gameplay, has lots of replayability just because going around the zones and places are memorable.
