All shell based mother of pearl is toxic. The dust is very similar to asbestos fiber. I have worked extensively with it for years as a semiprecious gemstone in the lapidary/jewelery industry. It should always be kept wet and worked with in a negative pressure exhaust work area to protect the worker. All that said, this man is a National Treasure for his country, absolutely outstanding work and I'm glad he has been able to mentor his nephew in the art! Excellent video, well worth my time to watch!

Yes it has to do with the way the material responds to the grinding process. Splintering into tiny sharp corkscrews which can embed themselves in the lung tissue. Incredibly dangerous. But no reason to be fearful of the beautiful finished products.

I'm a carver myself. Mostly bone, but I have messed with inlay a little bit, and I FULLY appreciate the pain in the ass factor of those teeny tiny pieces. And much like this man, I wouldn't have it any other way! Now, to get my meat hooks on a turban shell, of sufficient size, to play with! It seems to take detail very well, and that shimmer, sweet GODS, could I have fun!

I'm just finding these videos. They are so fascinating. I hope there are people who are willing to carry on these crafts.
And I hope he doesn't discard any of those shell particles. He can sell that to other artists. I'm a nail tech and I also do a lot of crafting and I can think of 6 different uses right now.

Interesting, my family also owns a set of table & chair with this kind of decoration, but I never know it is made of mother of pearl shell.
After many decades, it will become soft and can be easily peel off like paper.

I feel this way about rocks. My philosophy is we're all like rocks. Not much to look on the outside, but open us up for our inner beauty. Then again, some are just rocks.
His work reflects his inner beauty, as well. I use whatever I have. He doesn't have a fancy brazier to make glue, does it all by simplistic but powerful artistry. Thankyou.
