I've restored quite a few of these types of center-draft oil lamps. The cap is almost always seized on, and most of the time so are all the burner parts and internals seized and stuck together. DO NOT TAKE PLIARS TO IT! You will just rip up the cap and scratch/dent the thing. Here's what almost always works for me: Put it in your oven at baking temp (350 degrees or so) for a few minutes. The metal will expand and break threads loose, as well as any oily residue sticking things together will soften. There may be some smoking from the old oil. Open a window, and be very careful not to leave it in the oven too long least you get an actual fire or screw up the patina, plating, etc...Remove the hot lamp from your oven wearing mitts or thick fire retardant gloves, and try twisting the cap and burner parts. Usually, everything comes right apart.
@@doinsngoins I don't know, I just got this Royal, and I don't have any experience with the Rayo type lamps (just Aladdin and Coleman). From what I can tell, around 10"-12".. taller if need be for high altitude or depending on what kind of shade you use. I would ask Miles Stair. He seems to be the guru on these. What is the fitter size on that? Mine is 2 1/2".

It looks and works great. I have three center draft lamps myself. The issue I see is with the flame spreader, it is incorrect. The correct one should have a diamond in the middle with a fancy M in the middle of the diamond. However, it will work just fine with the rayo. You can fiind the correct one on ebay from time to time.
Thank you so much , I do see 👀 this now , I see one eBay, a number 2 , does tbis look correct? www.ebay.com/itm/195523545851?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=IM3SnDa3Tsm&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=ZniZLjZJRhS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
@@doinsngoins That one might be to big. Look up miller oil lamps. Find one that looks like yours. Some will have a photo of the flame spreader out. Then you can see exactly what it should look like. You could also go to oil lamp rescue, send him a photo of the lamp. He should be able to tell you what you need to find. He won't have the parts, but may have a calalog reprint with the correct part showing.
First! First! First! Beautiful Kerosene Lantern Steve!…if you do not want it….please send to your FRIEND up in Canada…lol…drop the Mic!!! You did an amazing job cleaning it up!
@@doinsngoins Cheers. Actually double checked and mine is a Juno Miller not a Vestal. Almost the same but the Juno has draft air holes punched in the neck as well as at the base
I’ll send you a link to check out 👍🏻 It’s a CDL (center draft lamp). They’re flat out good runners. I’ve got a couple and enjoy them often. Find you a green viton o-ring that fits the filler plug and it’ll be good to go. Always use clear kero. Dyed kero will ruin the wick. Start off wick at lowest possible setting on light up and gradually increase flame as it warms up. Other than fine tuning your wick, a correct chimney, and possibly a shade, it’ll provide bright light and heat. If you aren’t careful, you’ll burn off some arm hairs in a hurry 😂 Nice one my friend!!
😯 Wow that baby cleaned up nice. I found a super awesome place to get rare wicks. I will share website with you tomorrow. I can't wait to get home and do another video thanks for sharing
Thank you ! Pleaae do , man Im really digging the quality if the lamp , if you see a center draft out and about grab it ok , you will not be disappointed, sorry , sounds like you had to work this weekend!
Beautiful lamp and looks similar to French manufactured Gaudard lamps I have . The concentric wicks for Alladin and Gaudard are getting hard to find . Congrats on an awesome find . Happy Sunday Steve.
Thank you Pat ! 😊 up all night reading on these lamps , you are reading. My mind I need a couple of those , wow they put off the light , and good white lite . You have a great Sunday also ok !
Steve ,morning from RSA I will do ,look your flame spreader are to deep lift it out till all the holes is exposed ,that's the the round thing in the middle
Oh wow!!!!!! 👌 thank you for sharing this , you will love it !!! order the wick trimmer it really helps to level the flame and to keep the wick healthy 👍 are you posting your light up ?
@@doinsngoins I will try and post a picture or video when I get the chance. My dad speculates that my grandparents used it in the 1920s as primary lighting, and thereafter as back up lighting.
Man I must say I chuckled a lil when you blew the wick out lol but man I dig those Aladdin style lamps I do not own one but have had my eye on one for a minute don't some of them have a mantle that sits above the flame man sort of looks like the arc lantern mantles ...idk but it's cool man
I got super lucky on this one they wanted 45 but it was half off day so I swooped up. As you saw it took very little to get it going. I've never had one of these lamps I really do like it. Thanks for watching Darrell, and I hope you're having a great weekend!
Thanks for the tip . This is my first lamp , and I am really enjoying it, I just found one that uses a mantle, but found out the mantles are so $$$$$ , Im gonna buy one and try it out . This lamp is very fun and works flawlessly, thanks for the comment, much appreciated, have a good weekend 😀
