I remember when I was growing up on a island on Newfoundlands south coast we were often subject to power failures and used kerosene latterns for lighting, we had one of those as we called it mantle lamps. I'm wondering if I still have it in my basement I really need to dig out some old items I have. Awesome job on getting that one working, I sat many a night by a kerosene lamp there's a song you may have heard , by the glow of the kerosene lamp I'll try and find it for you

Remember they get more efficient as they warm up. They produce a lot of heat when they warm up and thats is the key of the brightness. I think making a round cone shape will help.

That's crazy I have that exact same lantern and was trying to do something similar and couldn't get a mantle to light good lol, you nailed it though so thanks for doing it !!!!

What I would try is to make the bottom ring heaver. Then use small hog rings to attach the mantle around the skirt and one at the top.

You're the man. First, there was the edison light...now there's the winkelman light. Maybe try some kind of stainless steel mesh that you can shape and fit over the mantle holder to kerp its shape. Then slip on the mantle. You're on the right track.😃👍🏻🇺🇲

Steve, definitely more economical than using the Aladdin brand mantles. I picked up about 100 sets of nameless Mantles from the Amish store about 30 years ago - they are okay- but in a pinch they will work on my Center draft lamps- thanks for sharing

Hello Sir, if i remember correctly SOTO were manufacturing lantern with permanent mantle. Cannot remember name or model. That kind of material will be worth of test. (Platinum SOD 250) find it!!

I have a couple Chinese mantles I’ll send you! They are so long I bet they would work great in this kind of application!!

Awesome Steve , just like we are alongside ! What a difference in brightness . Wonder if you dropped it even lower would eliminate gaps and not have to turn it up so high to get the results and that would avoid the soot on chimney
