That first set of leds just reminds me of how irritated I get driving at night when I come across someone who has led or hid in a non projector housing. No light focus, no cutoff line, just throwing light everywhere blinding everyone.
After I bought my 1996 XJ in 2017 I was amazed by the poor quality of the stock headlights. After much research, I bought the IPF H-4 lights that use the H-4 bulb. I use the Sylvania Silver Star bulbs and with the IPF headlights are a 100% improvement over the stock sealed beams. Unlike the sealed beams, when one burns out, you only change the bulbs not the whole light assembly. I may try some LED bulbs if the Sylvania's ever burn out.
I did the same. HELLA H4 headlights. Honestly, I wasn't super impressed with the lighting improvement. While bulb replacement will be nice when it comes to that, I really wanted some more brightness. I got a new headlight relay harness kit from K suspension. I haven't gotten around to installing yet, but I'm hoping that'll really make them shine.
#4 from left to right has been my go to on multiple toyotas, I even bought a set for my jeep. They are bright as hell and don't blind oncoming drivers.
Been rocking good ol' Halogen Housings with Phillips Vision Plus Bulbs in them. Really like them in the winter time when it snows as they tend to burn ice off vs the LED's. HID's in Projector housings should be outlawed IMO with how blinding those things are to other drivers at night.
@@michaeleast5180 I've got a similar "fix" but no where on road fix. 8 aux LED lights 4 spot 4 flood. With them on you can't tell if headlights are on or off. And you can spot deer on sides of the road 1/4 mile away or so.
I went with the Hella vision plus h4 and paired it with the h4 conversion harness. so far a major improvement and all I need, keeps that classic look and better than stock, just need to aim mine properly. hardest part was routing the wiring in place in 19 degree weather with the wind blowing lol. Also they arent ticket getters' and wont freeze over, LED's are just gimmicky to me, fine for some applications but not my choice for headlights in appearance or performance for my xj.
when I bought my XJ, it had some nobrand LED lights that were white on high beam and amber on low beam. They worked ok, but I only had the one usable highbeam mode, so I wanted to change them. I wound up getting the relay harness kit from K Suspension, and a cheap set of sealed beams out of a junk yard cherokee. They now outperform almost any LED replacements that I have seen, and they still have a very nice throw pattern. I want to get some of the H4 housings, and some good H4 bulbs to get that little bit more performance. But I 100% recommend that K suspension harness. It runs the headlights straight off the battery with a relay, so you don't get the voltage drop of going through the in-cab switch
I bought the set about 6 months ago and just got around to installing them last week. Those plus the new harness upgrade are great! Happy to see they were at the top for you as well!
Another good and honest video passing on the benefit of your experience Dex thanks man . I'd also be interested to see a bunch of the LED bulb replacements compared if you can find the time . I tried a set once a few years ago and they were total garbage, no dip beam cut off at all making them dangerous to use on the street . Maybe they have improved since then ?
Some have improved with it, problems with LED lights is still heat especially enclosed in reflectors as replacement for bulbs. I've tried a few different types off and on, for off-road use.
One thing that matters most for driving is beam pattern. It would be better if you shut the lights off in the shop to show that. Headlight revolution does a great video on 5x7 lights.
I have the fourth one and I love them, they came with a direct harness with relays it only use one side of the original headlight connector and factory switch
K is for kelvin = temperature (aka - color) of the light. 3000k is yellowish and 6000k is white with some blue, 2500k to 3800k is best for cutting through weather and dust etc. Sorry i was bored. Thanks for the solid content DEX ! Also HID's work best in a projector housing or any led bulb that has 360 degrees of lighting. double sided LED bulbs work best in a reflector housing. As always the light is only as good as the housing its in!
Other thing is some you have to switch the pins the low should be at the bottom of that light and with mine the drivers side light sits lower than the other side no adjustment can fix it I was told it’s for safety of not blinding cars on the other side of the road
Dex it would be great if you did the shock comparison. Rough country 3-in lift with their shocks that come in the kit compared to other shocks ride quality and handling. Love your videos Love what you do love that you keep it real. It's nice to see everyday folks on everyday budget builds versus big money bills. Thank you for what you do bro.
The last set where you used the HID bulbs with a good set of LED bulbs work pretty good. I just installed a very similar set with H4 LED bulbs on a F650 dump truck and they work really well!
I had to watch this again, due to the fact that I thought I bought the last pair you tested. I believe off of Amazon, I'd have to look, but I think less than $80. Anyway, hold on, yep same ones. I'm glad you did this cuz it reminded me to get busy put these in. Thanks again.
I have the last led set you installed, at 19:31, and they have been working great for me for well over a year. I have the daytime running lights connected, the outer curved portion, as well, which comes in handy if I'm getting to a campground late at night and don't to annoy people already there.
The last LED's that you did. I have them and the markers on the side are for turned signals. They blink very good headlights I use them on my daily and they work amazing
Hey Dex finished witching the rest of the video. I've been through a bunch of the cheap amazon/ebay headlights too. And one thing to note, for us XJ guys... The XJ's that have factory fog lights will not like the LED bulbs much. Especially ones with the "accent" , "DRL" or turn signals in them. I found that the only way to stop them from making the high beam relay buzz was to clip the one wire on the driver side harness, and install a stand alone harness with relays. once that was solved the high beam and low beam and foglight behavior was better for some of the 80-100$ ones.
@justdexit just FYI brick are supposed to be 4 inches for each course of brick but I really like your plan with these videos I hope to see more of them coming out for sure .
I’ve got a couple sets of the 80 dollar a pair (2nd to the last set you tested)in two Xj’s. I’d recommend them. Combined with a set of good fog lights the low beams are really good. Worth the little extra money. Glad I never went with the HID’s. Awesome video👍
Here’s a tip for the extra wires since you said you didn’t know what they’re for. They’re meant for the running lights. You tie the wiring into the running lights either in the blinker or side marker and when you put the running lights on. It turns on the yellow one the third pair or the half moons on the other pairs
Good review, they make some high powered HID’s, I bought four 150watts each for my 03 suburban and did the all light hack basically jumping, two pins in the relay fuse box under the hood so I can run low beam and high beam with fog lights at the same time if needed or just low beam…
A hood-mounted camera would have been great. Even just a GoPro at linear. If you were to hold your finger on the phone directly where the headlight is it will expose for the bright light so it shows better. I've been using these for almost 2 years. HWSTAR 2022 180W 1000% Bright H6054. The high beams are great. The low beams project wider than standard lights but not as far out. I like the wider as it helps see joggers who are out with no lights. You can definitely go down a rabbit hole doing these light comparison videos. I want to pick through that salvage yards Cherokees.
Nice spin on the videos. You can do all kinds of aftermarket items. But i bet it may become expensive. The lights was a good place to start. Ive been looking for a while for new headlights. Ive got a better idea so far. Thx!
If you get a good hid housing, they will out perform all those leds. Get a glass conversion and also they do make high low kits for the 7x6. I run them in my jeep yj. I do run 10k bulb which are a dark blue but they are still brighter then stock white h6054 bulbs. I going to inst all a set if led in a c4.. or I would still run hids...I have them in a few vehicles and even my bike...
I must be in time warp cuz I swear I subscribed to 'Just Dex It" Oh wow it must be the beer cans fallin out the back. Lookin for that 4 way. lol. Also thanks for doing what your doing. Much appreciated.
H4 Housing with Hella H4 bulbs and a ksuspension (or the cheaper chinese ones on ebay that ksus drop ships from) H4 harness give you the factory look with insanely good lighting
Hey Dex, you're the man. Are you going to the Matt's of road recovery off road games? I'd love to see you there. Do you know Matt and Colt from bleepin Jeep? You guys should merge! You know way more about Cherokees though.
HIDs need to be in a projector housing. I made my own by putting a mini projector into a 5x7 housing with Phillips HID-XV2 4800K bulbs and my XJ now has the best lighting on the market!
Thanks Dex I was thinking of getting led's but after this I'll stick to my extra bright halogen. The thing I noticed with the led's is everything gets washed out, it's like going back to a crt tv.
Tip for recording lighting is locking the camera ISO to a number that looks close to what your eyes are seeing. Granted that only works if your camera lets you do that.
I've gotten my last two for free. Stilling using the first pair and have a second as a backup. Facebook group, guy reached out asking for positive reviews for a free product. They worked great and have a ton of good light with a great cutoff. So had no issues giving a good review as I would have anyway.
Honestly, I'd take a good set of properly powered and focused halogens any day of the week. I did an upgraded H4 halogen harness and never looked back. Its just insanity how many people think it's just okay to roll around with no projectors and focus. Danger to themselves and others. But I'm not inclined to believe that people who install these have any of that in mind.
the $55.00 pair you tested, i had to use longer screws on the retention rings on my XJ, mine were rounded on the edges, but not quite enough to use the stock stubby screws, also i had to aim mine low to correct for the fact they shoot high, but man they throw a TON of light, the high beams on them are kinda weak sauce though
Gotta watch what kind of lights u get. Some are offroad non dot lights for offroad use "only" and they are usually the cheap ones are offroad and not for road use. Also the beam pattern or style is important can't compare floods to spots. And if it says dot on it then its dot compliant and rated for road use. The lens inside the lights that are different means some have a spot and flood beam.
I had HID's on my Polaris Ranger an they went Out an would Not come back on ! I was so far out in the woods that during the day time the sun light hits there Last ! I Will Never have them again !!
They do make HID's that will do hi/lo beam, they're not hard to find. Also with HID you can get 100/150 watt ballasts (technically not legal but they are safe if the light is adjusted properly) which is way brighter than the 35 or 55 watt ballast you were using. One other thing...putting light to that garage door is ridiculous, the surface needs to be flat, smooth and not shiny . Just go get a couple pieces of sheetrock , that way you could actually see what the beam pattern looks like(important stuff). Oh and one more thing again...If you find a light that has a scattered beam, that light is dangerous and should be considered unusable garbage. Please don't endorse the use of these lights . Try orange cones with the white reflector on them instead of signs. Space them 50 ft apart out to about 300 ft. Now you can see a real comparison. Keep up the good work.
@JUSTDEXIT Why not try the Holley retro bright? They collab with morimoto, and they made the classic style seal beam led headlights. And they offer the headlights of what u have. 3000k warm white led, and 5700k pure white led. Those are way better options
No beam because you are shining the light at a wrinkled reflective material that is diffusing the light pattern. Use a nonreflective wall in darkness to adjust the light beam.
Having seen this Im not buying any of them. I'm getting HID housings and getting LED equivalents for my 05 Camry cause they work great. I'll hack it up like you Dex.. Also 14:32 that extra wire is probably for running lights that you wire off the side marker running lights so when the car is on but with no headlights on the rim glows.

Technically the ton of LEDs with zero cutoff are not DOT Legal for road use either. The chances of you getting ticketed for them is pretty low though.
Great review dex hope things continue on the up and up for your channel and every step in life

I'm using a set of conventional halogen Europals with K-suspension wiring harness. They are awesome! You should check them out! Really!
Agree with this 100%. That harness with cheap sealed halogen is better than any LED bulbs. But kudos for putting out content on XJ and WJ. Keep it up!

Not only the LED's headlights. It's still a problem with the JT's with non LED headlights. In my experience.

Thanks Dex I was thinking of getting led's but after this I'll stick to my extra bright halogen. The thing I noticed with the led's is everything gets washed out, it's like going back to a crt tv.
Kinda wish you had listed the lights in the description of what you bought I like them 80 dollar ones
I agree, showing us the make or manufacturer of the lights or anything else tested is important so we can purchase if not available from Dex
Tip for recording lighting is locking the camera ISO to a number that looks close to what your eyes are seeing. Granted that only works if your camera lets you do that.
Hate n despise the look of the Chinese LEDs. Been saving my money for the Holly retro lights.

the $55.00 pair you tested, i had to use longer screws on the retention rings on my XJ, mine were rounded on the edges, but not quite enough to use the stock stubby screws, also i had to aim mine low to correct for the fact they shoot high, but man they throw a TON of light, the high beams on them are kinda weak sauce though
Do the test with a headlight harness installed see if makes a difference.
Can you do best headlights for wj? That would be awesome

How about listing the brand/part numbers?
Would you say what brand your favorite is
They do make HID's that will do hi/lo beam, they're not hard to find.
Also FYI, they do make high/low HID's just got to find a decent set.
@JUSTDEXIT
Why not try the Holley retro bright?
They collab with morimoto, and they made the classic style seal beam led headlights. And they offer the headlights of what u have. 3000k warm white led, and 5700k pure white led. Those are way better options
I have been looking at the LED headlights that look like the glass halogen housing that originally came with the XJ
HELLA H4 Lights NOKYA bulbs .
No beam because you are shining the light at a wrinkled reflective material that is diffusing the light pattern. Use a nonreflective wall in darkness to adjust the light beam.
Great work!
Have you looked into the round headlight conversions? Not sold on it for anything I own.
In case anyone was wondering these will also fit 1980-1986 ford pickups

i have a pair like the 50 ones and i had to flip them to make them worth anything
