Here's the funny thing...."I GOT A BOY" grew on me...It's been stuck in my head. I realize that these 2 songs may not be their best songs or show off their vocals the most.

Ok I'm not mad, I'm just laughing right now. Bcoz Girls' Generation are known to have the best vocalist in kpop girl group but you say they're bad 😂🤣😂 I won't blame you tho bcoz those song you listen too, are kinda hard to listen who's who and what.
But... Ok here the thing, in SNSD there's the main vocalist obviously and then there's the main dancers who "air quote" might not be the best but still can sing.
Idk if I'm just bias bcoz u know I grew up with this girls and I love them but, ur the coach and I'm just me. They HAVE vocals, believe me. Besides of being the nation's group of Korea, her leader Taeyeon is one of the best vocalist and succesful solo female artist now. I don't know if GG it's your style in general xD but If you want to try it again, I suggest "The Boys", "Mr. Mr." and "Dancing Queen". Also they have "TTS" (Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun) which it's a sub-unit more focus on vocals, their debut with "Twinkle" is sooooo good, I highly recommend it. Great video, I didn't hate you!! Hahaha, even feel sorry, IGAB was a really savage way to start with Girls Generation xDDD

Their deut was Into the New World, and is different from any of their other songs. To me it has more of a JPOP sound to it.
I agree, "Twinkle" is great, but "Holler" is a bop. However, TTS as a subunit is not really GG.
Taeyeon has amazing live vocals especially for her song "Fine"
I remember GG being a trendsetter every time they had a comeback. "IGAB" was one of their biggest twists in the kpop industry back then (but to be honest every comeback from them was a twist lol)

Lol you had to pick the most chaotic song of theirs as your first reaction. 2nd gen kpop was a hot mess, kitschy, full of experimental stuff that would be considered generic or cringey nowadays. I guess you just had to be around at the time when this was all brand new and no one was doing it. I think most female idols now will say that it was them who made them want to become idols.
I think you should try “Into the New World” which every new gg has covered in their career and “Gee” produced by the founders of HFE. Their most recent song “Lil Touch” by Oh! GG features the 5 members who renewed their contracts w/ SM ent. Now that I think of it, it was them who brought me out of my 6 yr hiatus which then made me find DC and here I am again. So thanks GG. Lol

Genie may be generic now but it was the hottest shit when it dropped. Girls generation started the cute concept trend with gee and they created the innocent concept with their debut into the new world, its basically mandatory for every girlgroup to cover that song, even dreamcatcher had done it lol
About songs i like... welll... the boys, mr taxi, you think and.. mr. mr. Are my favs. I got a boy was a grower. At first i didnt like it cause, just like you, i thought it was too all over the place but some time later i grew to like it, i dont know why lol
Oh the girl whose voice you praised is taeyeon, she is a vocal legend in kpop, its impossible not to like her voice and her technique is literally one of the best ever.
“2000s vibe” Yh maybe bc genie is from the 2000s lmao and IGAB from the early 2010’s. You listened to 2 songs only, they definitely have plenty of songs that showcase vocals more. Both of these songs are iconic and helped shape kpop girl groups today. Genie was not generic in the kpop industry back when it was released 😒

Girl's generation or SNSD is a powerful and unique group because every comeback song they release they change their style a lot. They don't stick to one style. One of their very famous song is The Boys, into the new world (debut song better watch live stage), Gee (the song that make bubblegum pop sooo popular and cute concept which what Twice is doing until they change their concept and sound bit by bit), Lion Heart (renaissance old fashion glamour concept), Party (summer concept and beach) and many more.
There are 9 members but Jessica is out from SNSD but to us Sones she is 9 in our hearts.
SNSD is also the OG title of National Girl group and still is.
They are also a rounded group meaning excel in vocal ever since debut (you can watch the live performance or show of Into the New World and they use hand mic instead of the usual ear mic), excel in dancing, concept, live performance, charisma and shape the beauty standard of kpop. SNSD along with Mamamoo and Dreamcatcher are my hard core group they are very well rounded. Gfriend is also good with dancing and singing but I am still not a hardcore fans of them just casual listener.

Tiffany and Seohyun are not main vocalists but lead vocalists with Sunny. SNSD only ever had 2 main vocalists Taeyeon and Jessica.

And Sunny was a great lead vocalist in the beginning but with time she stopped singing and didnt further with improving like Tiffany and Seohyun. Sooyoung and Yuri could be lead vocalists like Sunny because they improved over time. Sooyoung more than Yuri because she's more interested in singing

Being a lead vocal doesn't necessarily mean that you are any less than a main vocal in terms of talent or skill.
@exo are the real Kings I know Jessica isn't in the group anymore, but that doesn't change the fact of her original position in snsd. As what I was saying, they are just official roles, they themselves could improve beyond those roles and improve on equal grounds.
Look up Taeyeon's live performance of her song 'Fine.' she is their leader and a soloist now and is absolutely fantastic.
Also thanks for being honest about your opinion of the songs! Girls Gen were the 2nd Generation of KPOP during a time when they were still setting up what KPOP would be. So everything they did was pretty new to Korea and helped establish what came after
SNSD's debut song "Into the new World" is pretty iconic TBH, pretty much every girl group has probably covered/learned that song or "Gee" either during their training days or for special performances. DreamCatcher did a cover performance of "Into the New World" too! I think you should react to both the regular "into the new world" and their live Ballad version.
2nd gen groups often didn't keep to one concept, they switched it up a lot. SNSD did everything from sexy to cute from bright poppy sound to emotional ballads and everything in between. They're not called "nation's girl group for nothing. There's not words to describe how much of a legend these girls are. If you think they sound "typical' or "standard" that's probably because they're the ones who set it xD. These girls really helped change the game in Kpop. they're very well respected in the industry. They became like the textbook for girl groups today.

I got a boy is not the best to recommend for your first time listening to SNSD. It's like a 50/50 for someone that wanted to try listening to SNSD song. Maybe you'll like their newer stuffs. Girls Generation have a lot of song so please don't lose interest yet. I'm a Sone(Girls Generation fandom) before I also became a Moomoo. Their live performance are also good

the one you said you liked her voice, that's Taeyeon. She definitely has excellent vocals and one of the top in the industry imo. I'm still amazed at how a small frame like her can produce such a big voice. You should definitely check out her solo works and 100% you'll be able to appreciate her voice more.

IGAB was definitely experimental. When the song came out, it was really popular to have a song with very extreme switchups and genre changes but GG took it to another level. A lot of fans even had a hard time accepting the song at first when it was released (including me) so your reaction is not a surprise. Girl’s generation had a lot of different song styles and concepts over the years and many of their title tracks were very different from the next. I personally like Mr. Mr. or You think more. Since you are a vocal teacher, i think the only member whose vocals would impress u is Girls Generation’s leader Taeyeon. She has songs that i think stand the test of time unlike her groups’ title songs. She has some really great solo songs like “I” “U R” and “Fine” but i think she sounds even better live than on CD. The rest of the members have good vocals too but Taeyeon is miles above the rest of the girls. I hope people dont flame me because i still like the entire group.
Of all the songs on SNSD (Girl's Generation), those are 2 that I would not recommend to meet the group.
Personally I recommend "The Boys" and "Time Machine" (it has a very long intro, the song starts at 1:40, but it's my favorite).
Also, one of my Bias is Taeyeon and I recommend her MV's: I (feat. Verbal Jint), Fine, Rain, Spark and I Got Love.
you reacted to a song from early 2013 and another one from early 2010. as someone who has dreamcatcher & girls’ generation as my two favorite groups in all of kpop, I definitely recommend you listen to their releases from 2014 onwards! their last album (holiday night) especially has some gorgeous vocals in those bsides. considering you do value vocals quite a lot I also recommend checking out TTS (their first subunit with Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun) because they’ve got the 3 best voices in the group so obviously their work is all based on using those gorgeous voices. the girl you pointed out in Genie is Taeyeon and she has one of the best voices in kpop, her solo stuff is also fantastic. oh and I saw you were confused on twitter when someone asked you about the number of members that were in the group in the songs you reacted to so let me clarify - girls’ generation started as 9, one member left in 2014 and now they’re 8! 3 of the 8 members left their company and after that they debuted a subunit with the remaining 5 members in said company, but everyone has clarified that they still remain a group of 8 and will eventually try to get together again. as of now, everyone is working on their solo careers and rooting for one another, which I think is awesome 😊 these girls are insanely talented! please don’t give up on them lol

I understand why you'd think these songs were strange or "all over the place" or "confusing" or "basic"
But when Genie came out, there weren't many songs like it.
Also IGAB is an experimental song, it's all over the place for a reason
OMG SOSHI. They used to be my ult group, and there's so much heartbreak involved ;-; I agree that IGAB is a whole mess but I vibed hard with it as a kid XD I'm actually surprised that 'The Boys' wasn't recommended instead. Definitely also check out Kim Taeyeon if you want to hear more of her vocals. She's one of the best vocalists in the industry ugh. A whole queen.
For suggestions, I really loved 'All My Love Is For You' growing up. It's from their Japanese album.
Personnaly I did not stan Girls Generation (GG or SNSD for So Nyeo Shi Dae in Korean). But as you said it was a 2nd generation kpop group from the biggest (still a BIG3 💲💲💲) Kpop company SM entertainment and they set some kind of standard in the industry at the time.
Koreans loved this group so so so much at the time. Boys/men went crazy about them and all girly girls wanted to be like them. 😱
Not sure about the military uniforms in "Genie" but maybe it was because SNSD was so popular with soldiers. In South Korea, men are required to go do their military services for at least two years. And at some point, once a year some girl groups were invited to perform for them. So I guess, it was kind of a fan service choice. I might be totally wrong though.
IMHO their best vocalists were Taeyeon (the one you said was saving the song and who is probably the most popular as a solo artist nowadays), Seohyun (their maknae), Jessica (who left the group at some point), Tiffany and probably Sunny. The others did not have many lines and were not really helped by their company... 😒
Their usual sound is more girly/generic pop like "Genie". IMHO, for "I Got a Boy" (and some other hip hop songs), SMent wanted to replicate the hype for 2NE1 which had a girl crush concept with hip hop mashed up EDM sound (my Blackjack heart is still bleeding and crying about 2NE1 disbandment 😭😭😭😭).
Even if someone did not like SNSD, as a Kpop lover you could not avoid them. I do think their most iconic tracks are "Gee" (the producers are the ones who founded Happyface entertainment and wanted to have Minx...), "Mr Taxi" and "Run Devil Run". You should check their song "Into the New World" as well but maybe to compare with the cover by Dreamcatcher. 😘
The best thing to do with SNSD is to watch there MVs in order from debut to recent and see the evolution and growth of the group! SNSD are the most influential/legendary girl group in Kpop! They are Korea’s National Girl Group! THEY PAVED THE WAY FOR ALL GIRL GROUPS!

Girls' Generation has done many styles and concepts so you won't get bored listening to them if you give 'em an opportunity. They have go for cute, girlcrush, mature, sexy¿?, retro, and more concepts...I'm just in love with them. They're my fav girlgroup of all times and forever will be.

GG are the most iconic group ever, they literally started it all in terms of big intense stanning and concepts in kpop ❤️ I definitely would say listen to their debut!! It’s incredible! And their most recent stuff like Little Touch, Party and You Think 😊

And yes, they were very ahead of their time and still are killing it! They started lots of trends and most recent kpop idols always point to them as a reference.
Edit: I get that they might not be your style, that’s normal, not everyone likes everything 😊 but I’d definitely say look at some of their other stuff, those two songs (although I adore them) are some of their biggest hits in the whole career but they are quite old now and some of their most experimental stuff.
you can check "taeyeon" she's on Girls Generation (and you said you like her voice on Genie MV), she's the vocal of the group (in my opinion).
yes, they still together with 8 members and one of them (Jessica) in 2014 announced that she force out/drop out of the group. The most recent GG song is "Lil Touch" - Oh!GG with 5 members and it's 2 years ago :')
now they still hang out together but (i think) 3 of them are with different companies but yea they still together.
EXID has proven, with two post-contract comebacks, that it is possible for "free agents" to get back together as a group. Let's see how long it takes for SM to apply the lesson.

snsd (girls generation) was mostly known for very girly pop bubblegum songs (however very versatile in their music). i got a boy was their most experimental, and thus breaking their girly image. and this song was sort of one of the boundary breaking in kpop back then. and they were sort of the blueprint to the newer generation of girl groups

The baby voiced girl - Sunny - can actually sing (though a little rough around the edges...but since I grew up with punk, that kinda works for me more than perfection) but always got pushed into disgustingly cutesy voices, especially on title tracks. Which was always disappointing.
I think you’d enjoy their later stuff more. Lil’ Touch and All Night especially.
Recently Itzy's music reminds me a lot of I Got a Boy. It's hectic, messy and experimental in some ways.
Scott Adams I can see that. I thought Icy was fun, but I haven’t liked their other songs, and I don’t think any of them are particularly good singers. Their choreo on the is bananas.
I think a lot of Kpop went down the IGAB route rally, all maximalist jumbling of genres. They’ve just gotten a lot better at making it fit together (G-Idle is really good representation of this I think).
IGAB was waaaaaay too ahead of it's time. Pioneered the type of music in Kpop though. SNSD's peak was caught in between the analog and digital era. They were popular even before TH-cam views were a thing, this particular song earned them the ONLY TH-cam Video of the Year for Asain / Kpop music. And they are still relevant 13 years after debut. 🤷🏻♀️

I got a boy will always be one of my favorite kpop songs of all time. It was just soooo majestic.
I Got a Boy had so many switch ups due to the concept of the song - they wanted to do something different and the song was made to showcase a story rather than an actual song 💕
It was about the whole process of getting a boy and then losing them, hence the genre changes to mimic the moods of chasing after a guy, the whole process of it ❤️
Genie is probably my favorite song from GG. I LOVE the freaking song.

Their vocal line (Taeyeon, Jessica (former member), Tiffany, Seohyun, Sunny) is top 3 among girl groups and their Main vocalist (Taeyeon) is one of the best if not the best vocalist in Kpop. Girl's Generation is a LEGENDARY group, I got into kpop because of them. They debuted in 2007! So keep that in mind when you listen to their debut song, which is a great song but does sound old school. There are two live ballad versions of this song, one with OT9 and another with OT8, both are amazing.
Genie is one of my favourite tracks but their discography is huge, super varied and their japanese discography is amazing as well. Other than Into the New World, I think you will like Lion Heart, All night, Mr Mr, Hoot, One last time. From their japanese tracks, I recommend Karma Butterfly, The great escape and their ballads Time Machine, All my love is for you, Indestructible and Divine.
Their subunit TTS is focused on vocals, their songs Holler, Adrenaline and Twinkle are awesome.

Also a lot of younger girl groups look up to girls generation and have probably covered their song “into the new world” at least once in their life like dreamcatcher, twice, red velvet, every glow. I got a boy was a grower for me. Once I familiarized myself with the song, I was down for its chaoticness and it didn’t take me by surprise. I always love seeing people’s reaction to it. You NEED to listen to Into the New World, and Mr. Mr. for vocals. Also check out Taeyeon’s solo stuff! She is SO good!

IGAB is one of those SM Entertainment brainstorming songs. There were like 8 producers involved and the song was written within a day or something bizarre like that. Exo's Wolf and, to a lesser degree, Red Velvet's Zimzalabim have a similar messy vibe going on.
If we're suggesting throwbacks, 2NE1's song "Clap Your Hands" was the first MV I ever saw of KPOP. It was my door to this KPOP world in 2010, and I happened upon it by chance. Someone I used to know posted it on their FB wall. Although it's far from my favorite 2NE1 song. Miss A debuted around the same time I got into KPOP, and they were my favorite group until Mamamoo claimed that number 1 spot for me in 2016. It worked out, because the last MV Miss A did was "Only You" in 2015. I know Mamamoo debuted in 2014, but I was busy with university at the time and didn't catch wind of them until 2016. Either way, for me it feels as if I didn't have to directly compare them. Just a transition from 2nd gen to 3rd gen.
Also, T-ara, Brown Eyed Girls, and Wonder Girls are all worth looking into. "Abracadabra" by Brown Eyed Girls is an extremely iconic song. "Nobody" by Wonder Girls broke into the Billboard top 100 in 2010, setting trends for KPOP into the western market before the craze that came after with BTS and Blackpink. And T-ara just has so many bops.

SNSD is the reason i got into kpop. I was in fifth grade which was.. 10 years ago LOL IM SO OLD. I'm so happy you got that 140 bpm! It also refers to that exact part at 1:40 of the song.

To be fair, their songs didn't usually focus on powerhouse vocals because that wasn't their concept. Their songs were mostly mainstream, sing-a-long earworms with a catchy dance. They were also all over talk shows, variety shows, and dramas, where they were just the right balance of cute, funny, and relatable. That's why they were the nation's girl group from 2008- 2016 (From Gee era all the way until Twice took over with TT). As others have said, check out Taeyeon's solo discography if you want vocals for days. I know you like that retro funky vibe so I'd recommend "Something New." Cheers
Well, Girls' Generation is actually one of the best groups out there in terms of vocals. Also, if you actually followed Girls' Generation from the start, its kinda hard to like newer groups because the standard they set is way too high. Their live vocals are no joke. They belong to the era where lip singing is not allowed in live stages.
Bring back to 140 is in reference to the BPM as you Noted and The Time Stamp. GG are Queens of Different Concepts and Genres. They did Cute in their early days and moved more towards Sofisticated Mature Girl Crush/Sexy side or a Combination thereof. I Gotta Boy Is The Quintessential Cornucopia Mash Up of Concepts/Genres showing GG's Versatility and came out mid 2010's. My favorite Genie Mv is the Roof Top Version. Also if you want to see Cute more like Twice GG you should React to Gee, which I'm surprised it wasn't one of the first MV's for SNSD that you reacted to. Most persons exposure to GG/SNSD's and also It used to be for K-Pop and particularly Girl Groups in General was to Gee. Girls Generation didn't earn the Title The Nations Girl Group for Nothing You Know. Also like Dreamcatcher (and others) they Had their Trials. GG has in their History perhaps one of worst instances of Hate in K-Pop History when they suffered the Notorious Black Ocean Incident. Thankfully They Overcame that trial and became one of the Most Popular and beloved Girl Groups in K-Pop History. Today in many K-Pop Companies its Mandatory as part of training for trainees to learn GG Song(s) and Choreography, particularly Gee which is considered the Epitome and Gold Standard of the Cute Concept for K-Pop Girl Groups.

Mr. Mr. is a must listen IMO. That's a better representation of them that is less dated and shows the group at one of their highest peaks - more mature, more musically interesting, and better developed vocally as a group.

140 is BPM _and_ them returning to the melody introduced at 1m40s into the _album_ version of the song (meaning, without the pink bedroom stuff). Lyric writing that was maybe too clever by half.
the song i got a boy was in that weird kpop era : weird song composition, weird outfits + makeup + hairstyle, very colorful : 2010s kpop haha. tbh i prefer this era of kpop bc everything was so experimental and producers tried so many stuff before what we have today. they took a lot of risks, many hits and misses but it was so much fun! but it's kinda hard to digest when you first see this i agree. you should react to more 2nd gen kpop groups, it's going to be ... weird.

It was so funny see you navigating I Got a Boy 😂😂😂 believe at the time when it dropped we had the same reaction. People were so divided 😂😂😂 I hate it at first, but now I tolerate it.
SM entertainment is a company that tried on so many experimental songs. Red Velvet is their new group which they are still trying to experiment on [Happiness, Ice cream cake,Zimzalabim, etc]. But before RV there was Girl's Generation, their diamond. However, as SNSD's popularity grew, SM never stops experimenting. I Got A Boy was one of those songs. If you look into the process of how SM make songs, you will see that they let many music producers, lyricists, top-liners pitch at each other until they think a pair-up/group project would make a great song, then they would pick those people and get them to create a song together. Back when I Got A Boy was released, I was surprised with how the song seemed to change in style ever so often, but it did stuck in my head and it was so iconic to its age. There are many other great/iconic Kpop songs that if you have just heard the song for the first time today, you wouldn't understand why it was so popular. But if you have experienced its debut, it was another story!
The "Let's bring it back to 140" is funny as hell, because it's bringing it back to 140bpm, ALSO the bpm change happens AT 1min 40sec into the song. "I Got A Boy" was I BELIEVE a 2014 release, and "Genie" was 2010. Girls Generation was, is, and always will be the nations girl group. They are the first group to really break into the scene when it was majorly dominated by male idols. They opened the door for all the other amazing female artists we know and love now. I think probably my favorite Girls Generation songs I would probably recommend would be "The Boys", "Mr. Mr.", and the ballad version of "Into The New World" (HAVE TISSUES PREPARED, IT IS SO SAD BUT SO BEAUTIFUL.) The voice you really like in "Genie" is Taeyeon, the groups leader and strongest vocalist, who has a very incredible solo career so far. She is 200% worth checking out.

For me, Girls Generation’s songs are mostly bops. For any new Kpop fan that had never seen GG/SNSD, I would recommend to check out The Boys, Mr Mr, Express 999 (live concert ver, we all know that one where Taeyeon power-walked while belting the high note: legendary moment), You Think, Check (a b-side that’s appealing if you like a more slow and sexy/mature concept) and also the sub unit TTS (consisting of Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun) with their songs Twinkle and Holler. Now, a lot of them actually have their own solo careers, and I would like for you to give a review/thoughts on their music. Also, their concerts are everything. Regarding the reaction, don’t worry about it! I think a lot of people would agree that IGAB isn’t really a good video to watch as a first impression since it’s a bit ‘chaotic’ with the mash of different themes in it and Genie being more of a live performance song (at least, for me.) There are more songs from them that might suit your taste, I hope you’ll find them and give us your input then! Thanks for the video!
Genie is a total vibe. It’s a bop. It’s still better than most songs this era. This song was a revolution in the industry. It may seem generic now, but back then, this changes the entire game.

I actively dislike IGAB and feel meh about Genie (also quite a hater of Gee and The Boys some recommend here) but SNSD is still the only Kpop group in my heart, despite me being into the scene for near 10 years and being aware of hundreds of groups and solo artists, many of whom I like and respect. They are a lot more than their biggest title tracks, in my opinion. They are more than their music in general, if I'm being 100% honest.
SNSD at their prime were a breaker of walls and a setter of trends. Some of their music may sound generic now but it was fresh and shocking at the time it came out. Some of their achievements may feel small compared to what groups like BTS or BP have but they were doing the impossible at the time that was very different (still the only GG to beat BGs in CD sales, a million selling album, first Korean group to 100mil on YT, IGAB winning TH-cam's 'Video of the Year' with Sones and allies giving hugest western fandoms a major beating in voting, massive achievements in Asia and Japan in particular, appearances on major TV shows in US and Europe etc).
And while many groups find their style and stick with it (nothing wrong with that), SNSD's style was always trying new things. And they had to make it work as a team, which often meant not showing off all they had to offer individually. They are great performers with a lot of charisma (especially at their concerts), their dance formations as 9 were fantastic, their singing in group ballads is very solid, impactful and pleasing for the ear. But even knowing all that you still get taken off guard when you see how good of a dancer Hyoyeon is individually or what Taeyeon can do to you with her voice. And you'd think it's the result of them being in the game for so long but then you go and find videos of them at 15 and realize they were pretty good all this time and you just never knew it. I'm using these 2 as examples but all members have more to offer than you'd assume from seeing some of the group's MVs. Some of my favorite solo songs came from the members who were considered the weakest vocalists in the group for example.
As far as vocals go, you definitely want to check out Taeyeon. She has a respectably sized solo discography by now and I adore 99% of it. You can check "Taeyeon TOP 12 Emotional Singing (Concert Edition)" for an overview of the more belty side, "Four Seasons" and "I Got Love" MVs for some other sides of her voice.
