This is the synth I've been waiting for for years. Well worth the coin IMO. In a world where there is a race to the bottom with mini this and mini that the fact that this even exists should make every synth lover smile. Great content here as per usual Loopop!
I find the pricing outrageous. For this price you can buy a Polybrute, a Nord Stage 3 88, a Model D (or even a Poly D), a Hydrasynth Desktop and a Digitakt - ALL AT ONCE and have an amazing studio (just a quick search for some different types of gear... you might also switch out something for a Summit or add an H9 Pedal). Yeah the Moog One looks like an amazing synth but I don't think synth lovers should encourage these rip-offs. In the end the sounds were quite the usual bread and butter and the layout and structure is mediocre at best (quite a bit form over function).
@@Xul I've been buying synths for almost 30 years. I've owned a pretty nutty amount of different synths and currently settled on 28 ranging from 1972 to 2021. I originally also thought the price of the Moog One seemed crazy until I thought about the fact my Polymoog 203a is worth $4000 and although it sounds lovely and has some really unique character, it can't exactly do a ton and basically can't be moved anywhere without having to open it up and reseat the polycards. Then I thought about how many other analog poly synths I have that I'm not super into. The current prices on vintage Jupiter synths is so crazy. The 4 is $4000 and the 8 is now listed at 30k!!!! Now that's nuts. I love the Hydrasynth and it's one of my all time favorite synths but that is not going to sound like the Moog One at all. Behringer is just garbage. I had 6 of them and got rid of them as fast as I could. I think $6000 on one beautiful analog poly synth that basically replaces at least 5 other synths that I currently have is very acceptable. Shoot, I paid 4k each for an SH7 and an Oscar. Great synths generally cost a few grand and once you have some synths of that level you kind of just go "ohhhhh now I get it". Wood and metal and weight! I like my synths big and beefy. I want them to look and feel as good as it sounds. I think this is a really beautiful machine and the fact that Moog has now built of 3000 of these shows that there are people happy to pay for a quality machine.
@@VincentPresley boomers driving up vintage synths to absurd prices is exactly the reason why you shouldn’t be encouraging these prices; normalizing it is the last thing we want 16 voice analog polyphony is pretty impressive but when it costs $9000 you really start thinking about how many good songs were written with just one, i mean what’s the point of even making any of this stuff if the only people who can afford it are established musicians and retirees? no offense to either but that’s a pretty limited audience and doesn’t exactly increase the probability of this thing being used to create anything that people will remember
@@aawagga6841 Most people that say "boomer" don't seem to know what that means. I'm not a boomer and neither are any of the people I know with large amounts of gear. Real gear that's well made costs money. I used garbage guitar amps for years before I finally bit the bullet and realized what I had been avoiding. It's not hard to save money for something nice. I work a full time normal job, run a record label, release my own albums, tour in bands, spin records at clubs, etc. I don't waste time with sports and video games so I don't really have to cry about things being expensive because everything I do brings money in. You can buy and use bottom shelf garbage gear like Behringer and VSTs if you want. They're there for you. People that still like instruments to feel like real instruments and not look like plastic little toys are willing to pay more. Those are also usually the people that take themselves a little more serious and will probably actually do something with the gear.
I'm trying to rationalize getting one of these and here's what I've come up with: buy this synth for $8k and spend the next 8 years just exploring all its possibilities, so it only comes down to $1k / year. Not bad. Great video loopop!
When i first started making music i didn't like moog at all. But then when i used a moog slim phatty for a techno track in the studio of my production school i came to realise the whole point of moog is how strong and raw it sounds so you can add stuff yourself. I was absolutly blown away by the sound with some added fx and this thing without fx already seems 10x better. Imagine what it could do with effects o-0 When i have the money im definitly buying this. Really good review :)
Thanks for the detailed and beautifully made overview! I have had my One 16V for over a year now (one of the first 50 serial numbers) and, after a bit of a rocky start with less-than-perfect firmware versions and battling with my own preconceptions, it has become my favorite instrument ever - it feels and sounds like nothing else (and again, time is your friend to really get to understand its nature and sonic versatility), it has the most "acoustic" feel of any synth I've ever used, and it is nothing less than a game changer when it comes to sound design and user experience. It is now the first instrument I reach for whatever piece I am working on - it is an astonishing accomplishment and an instant classic IMHO. Love it... a lot. :)
At my school, we use drone bucks to represent the relative cost of something. At the time, one drone buck = $750. I think we need a unit of measure, one Moog buck. Start that at a say, a Moog Sub Phatty or such.
Excellent video! This is the overview I’ve been waiting for. I finally understand the concept and potential of this monstrosity. Once you look at all the details, the price doesn’t seem so crazy after all. Time will tell, but it seems Moog may have finally dethroned the Andromeda as the Godzilla of analog synths.

Nahhh, my novation summit does this + wavetables + fm for a quarter of the price and waldor iiridium does everything × 10 for less tham half the price! This is just moog being moog😂
Love the comment about dividing the price by the number of voices; that makes it the most cost-effective Moog on the market lol. Plus this synth isn't supposed to be another keyboard; it's supposed to be a premium, centerpiece synth workstation at the heart of your studio. It's aimed at professionals and professional studio budgets. For us shmucks down here in the dirt, you're selling a lot to make room for this beast. It's definitely not for me, but boy, is fun to look at and dream about. Maybe one day. I feel like I need to take keyboard lessons to earn the right to buy one of these! Also Asheville, NC is only about an hour and fifteen minute drive for me. I go there for shows a lot and have of course toured Moog's facility. It was amazing, to say the least. Full of people who love what they do and are the best at their craft. I shook the hand of a guy who probably built my DFAM. Everything is made by hand and they still do some stuff the OLD school way. Just bringing it up to say that I don't feel like this synth is too expensive. You get every bit of what you pay for and I truly feel like this is the best and most comprehensive piece of analog gear on the market.
The colors chosen including buttons and knobs, panels and trim are really extremely appealing to me. The wood tone almost orange does not go with any of it but nice that it's real wood. This is touchy because when spending $8K you'd better like the appearance because you will be staring at it a lot. I'd prefer a dark wood or even grey oak etc. I wonder will they offer other types before I even considering dropping that much cash. The cheaper a board is the less it matters and vice versa. I mean very seriously I might consider buying one if the wood has other options.

Thank you for posting. I love the One! I've had access to one in Hollywood for the past year, I haven't reached the ceiling yet and I'm always making new sounds. I would never drag one on stage (it weighs a ton!) But for studio use, (especially soundtracks) it is an amazing machine with amazing sound.
Fantastic review and thank you. Impressive 16 voice analog poly. What strikes me is that it sounds like an instrument in itself that will stand the test of time. Moog will support it and update it with firmware. Expensive but 16 voices, multiple filters, 4 LFO's etc...
Watching this, I remember "Trio" having two major hits with a Casio Minikeyboard (Da da da and Herz ist Trumpf). That helps keeping things together ;-)
I would like to add for anyone even considering the 8 voice, remember it's 3 synths. The layering for pads is what make this beauty what it is. Good big! It's worth it.

I will say it’s worth it. It makes me play better and it’s the biggest sounding most polished sounding synth ive ever heard. I’m a sample/loop maker and I don’t have to do any extra mixing really when using this machine. Each patch sounds like a finished mixed melody part.
You cannot use the USB Host connector to connect a class-compliant MIDI device. Though the manual suggests so, it has been confirmed to me by Moog support that it is not the case.

When people say it sounds like a vst, I think that could arguably be taken as a compliment. Especially considering this is an analog synth. I don't think people understand how powerful software is. That it could sound so clean and pure is a testament to remarkable engineering. Also, when people display the Moog One features, they typically want to demo polyphony. The few phatter, gnarly sounds I've heard from the One sound great, but those kinds of patches don't always sound great with multiple notes playing at once.
Coming back to this video again 6 months later. Still learning from this video. I have an OSCar and the filter separation knob is what makes that synth. I totally missed that the Moog One had that. I've had almost every vintage Moog (not including any modular systems) and the filters losing all the low end as soon as resonance is added was always their biggest flaw to me. The Moog One and Matriarch finally fixed that with their multiple filters. I still read so much hate about the One and I really don't get it. It most definitely sounds like a Moog. It most definitely can do so much more than the classics. I think the hate comes from people that got faulty units early on (mine works perfectly, including the tuning) and from people that don't know how to use it or only heard the presets. The presets are pretty terrible. They sound like they just really wanted to prove that the One could sound like non-Moog keyboards. Very few classic Moog sounds in the presets at all.
Happy to hear that your unit's tuning is fine ! I'm actively looking to buy a M1 16 voices and the only thing holding me back is the tuning problems, cause I want to use the One with Orchestral sounds, it need to be tuned, not perfectly ( I'd love some analog detune goodness ) but it needs to be workable in tonal music context. @@jfracine_composition It's odd because half the complaints about the One are about some tuning problem that was fixed right away and the other half complain about the tuning be too exact. I don't think these people ever owned one. It's most definitely one of my favorite synths ever made.

It's got nothing to do with being like a CS-80, is why. MemoryMoog was always a 'one up' response to the Prophet-5, and the One is a clear continuation of the MM form.
Good point about what happens to a parameter when you turn a knob. The Memorymoog had 3 modes for that, in the global settings (not per patch). Does the Moog One have these features? (Names of modes are my own) 1. follow: if you turn a knob the parameter will immediatly start to increase or decrease. Unless the knob had started out pointing in the exact direction as the parameter's currently-active value: in one direction, you would reach the end of the knob's travel before you to reach the the limit of the parameter's range, and in the other direction you would reach the end of the parameter's range first and as you continue to turn the knob to its physical limit there would no longer be more change to the parameter. To bring the knob to the state where it points in the exact direction of the parameter's value, you could quickly move the kob all the way to one end and then to the other, whch would alighn the knob's travel with the parameter's value. 2. jump: as soon as a turn to the knob is detected, the parameter instantly jumps to the value the knob is pointing at. (This is a useful mode, but sometimes a tiny movement of the knob would be detected even though you weren't touching it at the time, and the parameter would jump. Moog fixed this with a later firmware update wherein the jump would not occur until the knob had been moved at least 2%.) 3. through: turning the knob has no effect on the parameter until it passes through the parameter's current value, after which it follows. I found mode three to be the safest and most useful for live performance. This was helped by a key feature: the Memorymoog had a six-digit display, and as soon as any knob was turned the display's first three digits would show the memorized value for that parameter, and the last three digits would show the currently active value. So you could always see where you were, or return the parameter close to its original position.
What do you think of the Moog One today after all the patches? I recently got the Quantum Mk2, but have never had an analog synth. I do really like that I have so much control with the Quantum, 3 oscilators, 6 LFO (rarely use more than 2) and plenty of Envelopes (often use 4). The synths that caught my eye is Moog One, because of the complexity, Also the UI seems really nice to me. The OB X8 sounds fantastic, but has much less features. The Mini Moog D seems nice for base and some leads, but very expensive. I also use a lot of sampled instruments from Kontakt so synth is just part of the sound I do. However it has been the most fun I had in years!
The sheer breadth, depth, and pace of the seemingly every other day reviews, editing the vids and uploading them leads me to ask: which hardware does loopop actually keep around (I don't see a "loopops rig" vid) AND is there actually any time at all to compose and make music of any kind with all this wonderful gear (which in the end, is what it's really made for)?
Thanks! This video actually took about 10 days to make... so hardly every other day (unfortunately otherwise I'd have much less of a backlog!). Regarding rig: I hardly have one - very little stays around as I like a clean desk (there's a jam setup which is changing in another room...). Regarding music, in almost every review there's my attempt at a track as a review isn't a review unless I've extracted something musical out of the thing (at least to my taste...). First album of "music from reviews" coming very soon...
well finally you showed me a new piece of gear and I didn't rush right out an buy it. :-) ...but I'm thinking about it. If I won a million in the lottery, a trip to asheville would be the first thing I did for myself.
Thanks as always for a lucid and comprehensive review. Coupla questions- is the portamento polyphonic? And is the tuning stable when environmental changes (ie temp) are happening? (Cue memories of my jupiter 8 and OB 8) And one more comment- I haven't been in the room with one of these to hear the fan, but on principle, an electronic instrument should not generate ANY noise other than musical sounds. I'm looking at you too, Nord!!
Thanks! Portamento works in polyphonic mode if that's what you mean? You get a glide from wherever the voice you hit happened to be... re tuning with changes in temperature - didn't try any extremes... maybe someone else can comment...

One thing that I would have highlighted too, as an annoyance when you are playing velocity sensitive patches through the arpeggiator, is that all notes are output at maximal velocity level, and this you cannot change in a menu. 127 is damned hard when you have a subtle velocity sensitive patch! Like if all of a sudden you were banging your keyboard to death. A lower default velocity would have been better. Ideally, it should be user-definable, and have a setting that would follow your velocity in real-time, as you play. Fantastic review, BTW!
I noticed that the tuning is off by a lot. Can that be calibrated or is it a known issue of the Moog One? I refer to the global tuning and also in between an octave. Great review as always!
Thank you for such an in depth review. Looks like I’m going to be a lot poorer soon! One question. Is the glide function Global or can it be on a per synth basis? So in theory, with 3 synths running you could apply 3 separate glides. Just asking for a friend 😀

Hi Ziv and many thanks for yet another great review. My Eurorack system has ended up costing a similar amount to a Moog One and while it has more oscillator types, filters, endless patchability and sounds amazing, the Moog one has pretty good oscillators and filters, a great mod matrix, is polyphonic etc. Did you end up keeping the Moog One and if you had both this and a Eurorack, do you think you would end up using the Moog One a lot more due to ease of programming/patching, presets etc.?
Thanks! Yes, I still have it around luckily :) I see my eurorack and this as two very different things for different purposes, or moods. Really the only similarity is the cost - they're two different things designed for two different types of musicmaking. If I had to sum it up, Moog One is a synth you play, eurorack is a machine that plays on its own with you nudging it in the right directions every now and then... I also rarely use Eurorack for polyphonic sounds - not worth the hassle...
We need more demos of the ONE with only analog FX, because all those digital FX and especially those horrible “shimmer” type verbs makes it sound like any old VST synth IMO…
"...assuming one has enough organs to sell..." - young poor musician plans to sell a kidney, get a One, produce the greatest sound track, make enough money to buy a replacement kidney...
It might be taste but sound wise I think there are poly synths which sound better at a lower price. I think the OB-6 and the Prophet-5/10 has more character and warmness in the sounds. The Moog one obviously has a better dialing in experience.

I bought my first Moog a week back (Sub 25) after 30 years of producing and I'm already a convert too.
Having played this at Perfect Circuit, I was immediately in awe of what a magnificent monster this analog polysynth truly is. I still drool over it.

The colors chosen including buttons and knobs, panels and trim are really extremely appealing to me. The wood tone almost orange does not go with any of it but nice that it's real wood. This is touchy because when spending $8K you'd better like the appearance because you will be staring at it a lot. I'd prefer a dark wood or even grey oak etc. I wonder will they offer other types before I even considering dropping that much cash. The cheaper a board is the less it matters and vice versa. I mean very seriously I might consider buying one if the wood has other options.

Thank you for posting. I love the One! I've had access to one in Hollywood for the past year, I haven't reached the ceiling yet and I'm always making new sounds. I would never drag one on stage (it weighs a ton!) But for studio use, (especially soundtracks) it is an amazing machine with amazing sound.
Fantastic review and thank you. Impressive 16 voice analog poly. What strikes me is that it sounds like an instrument in itself that will stand the test of time. Moog will support it and update it with firmware. Expensive but 16 voices, multiple filters, 4 LFO's etc...
Watching this, I remember "Trio" having two major hits with a Casio Minikeyboard (Da da da and Herz ist Trumpf). That helps keeping things together ;-)

I will say it’s worth it. It makes me play better and it’s the biggest sounding most polished sounding synth ive ever heard. I’m a sample/loop maker and I don’t have to do any extra mixing really when using this machine. Each patch sounds like a finished mixed melody part.
You cannot use the USB Host connector to connect a class-compliant MIDI device. Though the manual suggests so, it has been confirmed to me by Moog support that it is not the case.

When people say it sounds like a vst, I think that could arguably be taken as a compliment. Especially considering this is an analog synth. I don't think people understand how powerful software is. That it could sound so clean and pure is a testament to remarkable engineering.
Also, when people display the Moog One features, they typically want to demo polyphony. The few phatter, gnarly sounds I've heard from the One sound great, but those kinds of patches don't always sound great with multiple notes playing at once.
A synth only surpassed by the reviewer. Excellent content, editing and value. Gratefully.

Coming back to this video again 6 months later. Still learning from this video. I have an OSCar and the filter separation knob is what makes that synth. I totally missed that the Moog One had that. I've had almost every vintage Moog (not including any modular systems) and the filters losing all the low end as soon as resonance is added was always their biggest flaw to me. The Moog One and Matriarch finally fixed that with their multiple filters. I still read so much hate about the One and I really don't get it. It most definitely sounds like a Moog. It most definitely can do so much more than the classics. I think the hate comes from people that got faulty units early on (mine works perfectly, including the tuning) and from people that don't know how to use it or only heard the presets. The presets are pretty terrible. They sound like they just really wanted to prove that the One could sound like non-Moog keyboards. Very few classic Moog sounds in the presets at all.
Happy to hear that your unit's tuning is fine ! I'm actively looking to buy a M1 16 voices and the only thing holding me back is the tuning problems, cause I want to use the One with Orchestral sounds, it need to be tuned, not perfectly ( I'd love some analog detune goodness ) but it needs to be workable in tonal music context.

Good point about what happens to a parameter when you turn a knob. The Memorymoog had 3 modes for that, in the global settings (not per patch). Does the Moog One have these features? (Names of modes are my own)
1. follow: if you turn a knob the parameter will immediatly start to increase or decrease. Unless the knob had started out pointing in the exact direction as the parameter's currently-active value: in one direction, you would reach the end of the knob's travel before you to reach the the limit of the parameter's range, and in the other direction you would reach the end of the parameter's range first and as you continue to turn the knob to its physical limit there would no longer be more change to the parameter. To bring the knob to the state where it points in the exact direction of the parameter's value, you could quickly move the kob all the way to one end and then to the other, whch would alighn the knob's travel with the parameter's value.
2. jump: as soon as a turn to the knob is detected, the parameter instantly jumps to the value the knob is pointing at. (This is a useful mode, but sometimes a tiny movement of the knob would be detected even though you weren't touching it at the time, and the parameter would jump. Moog fixed this with a later firmware update wherein the jump would not occur until the knob had been moved at least 2%.)
3. through: turning the knob has no effect on the parameter until it passes through the parameter's current value, after which it follows.
I found mode three to be the safest and most useful for live performance. This was helped by a key feature: the Memorymoog had a six-digit display, and as soon as any knob was turned the display's first three digits would show the memorized value for that parameter, and the last three digits would show the currently active value. So you could always see where you were, or return the parameter close to its original position.
What do you think of the Moog One today after all the patches? I recently got the Quantum Mk2, but have never had an analog synth. I do really like that I have so much control with the Quantum, 3 oscilators, 6 LFO (rarely use more than 2) and plenty of Envelopes (often use 4). The synths that caught my eye is Moog One, because of the complexity, Also the UI seems really nice to me. The OB X8 sounds fantastic, but has much less features. The Mini Moog D seems nice for base and some leads, but very expensive. I also use a lot of sampled instruments from Kontakt so synth is just part of the sound I do. However it has been the most fun I had in years!

The sheer breadth, depth, and pace of the seemingly every other day reviews, editing the vids and uploading them leads me to ask: which hardware does loopop actually keep around (I don't see a "loopops rig" vid) AND is there actually any time at all to compose and make music of any kind with all this wonderful gear (which in the end, is what it's really made for)?
Thanks! This video actually took about 10 days to make... so hardly every other day (unfortunately otherwise I'd have much less of a backlog!). Regarding rig: I hardly have one - very little stays around as I like a clean desk (there's a jam setup which is changing in another room...). Regarding music, in almost every review there's my attempt at a track as a review isn't a review unless I've extracted something musical out of the thing (at least to my taste...). First album of "music from reviews" coming very soon...

I would go for the 8 voice myself personally. I find 16 voices is really difficult to set properly in a mix, especially next to other synths.
True. While some players may disagree, IMHO, a synth can be too thick in a busy mix. 🙂

Thanks as always for a lucid and comprehensive review. Coupla questions- is the portamento polyphonic? And is the tuning stable when environmental changes (ie temp) are happening? (Cue memories of my jupiter 8 and OB 8) And one more comment- I haven't been in the room with one of these to hear the fan, but on principle, an electronic instrument should not generate ANY noise other than musical sounds. I'm looking at you too, Nord!!
Thanks! Portamento works in polyphonic mode if that's what you mean? You get a glide from wherever the voice you hit happened to be... re tuning with changes in temperature - didn't try any extremes... maybe someone else can comment...

One thing that I would have highlighted too, as an annoyance when you are playing velocity sensitive patches through the arpeggiator, is that all notes are output at maximal velocity level, and this you cannot change in a menu. 127 is damned hard when you have a subtle velocity sensitive patch! Like if all of a sudden you were banging your keyboard to death. A lower default velocity would have been better. Ideally, it should be user-definable, and have a setting that would follow your velocity in real-time, as you play. Fantastic review, BTW!

I noticed that the tuning is off by a lot. Can that be calibrated or is it a known issue of the Moog One? I refer to the global tuning and also in between an octave. Great review as always!

My Eurorack system has ended up costing a similar amount to a Moog One and while it has more oscillator types, filters, endless patchability and sounds amazing, the Moog one has pretty good oscillators and filters, a great mod matrix, is polyphonic etc.
Did you end up keeping the Moog One and if you had both this and a Eurorack, do you think you would end up using the Moog One a lot more due to ease of programming/patching, presets etc.?
Thanks! Yes, I still have it around luckily :) I see my eurorack and this as two very different things for different purposes, or moods. Really the only similarity is the cost - they're two different things designed for two different types of musicmaking. If I had to sum it up, Moog One is a synth you play, eurorack is a machine that plays on its own with you nudging it in the right directions every now and then... I also rarely use Eurorack for polyphonic sounds - not worth the hassle...

We need more demos of the ONE with only analog FX, because all those digital FX and especially those horrible “shimmer” type verbs makes it sound like any old VST synth IMO…
"...assuming one has enough organs to sell..." - young poor musician plans to sell a kidney, get a One, produce the greatest sound track, make enough money to buy a replacement kidney...
It might be taste but sound wise I think there are poly synths which sound better at a lower price. I think the OB-6 and the Prophet-5/10 has more character and warmness in the sounds. The Moog one obviously has a better dialing in experience.
