Bella Donna's performance features a streamlined setup of a Moog Matriarch synthesizer and effects pedals from Earthquaker Devices. But the Sonic Sorceress coaxes a huge range of sounds and moods from her rig, from ambient textures, to prog leads, to primal wails.
Bella Donna recently wrapped up a tour of Japan with Boris and has two new albums out on Bandcamp

Hey Loopop, I'm from the Future and here is a global settings software via a website a friend made. mreid.github.io/matriarch-editor/?fbclid=IwAR32sYwMnll9NVhc_N7ITBANIHSt7EVxlW15GF128MN5Jc_W-U7LS8IcmS0

I feel like your video touching on the firmware update also deserves a sticky comment here.
The Global Settings menu system was indeed a huge con to me, but I decided to pull the trigger anyway. Haven't even unboxed it yet and was already pleased to find out there are new options like a web based editor, a dedicated app, etc!

It's disturbing to watch how casually (without seemingly the slightest effort) you recall and pass on a wealth of useful information, half of which I'll need weeks to even understand, let alone remember. I'll never in a lifetime will understand sound synthesis as deeply and organically as you do, but at least I have your videos to learn from. :) Thank you.

At 7:00 with the sync, that was one of the greatest sequences I have ever heard, it had such a smooth transition between each note with loads of character. I have heard and created myself, motion sequences which are interesting, but don't have the character of that sequence you played. Stereo filter, interesting, makes me wonder why this isn't standard on all synths, been using filters in stereo with my Roland Gaia for 7 years now.

I've never been more than passingly interested in Moog synths because of their price, and I foolishly came into this video thinking "I know I'm not missing anything, but let's see what it does for fun". Your video convinced me to at least consider a Moog, so you've done what no one else has been able to do so far. Very well done, and great video, as always. :)

Sounds great ... that round robin mode is cool.
Yet with 4 oscillators and paraphony it would be nice to have two simultaneous sequencers or sequencer and arp together, with one/two oscillators left for soloing on top of the seq/arp.

Great job! Has a few features in common with the Moog Opus 3, except with the Opus 3 being divide down, it could produce more than 4 notes. That being said, this offers a BOATLOAD more control and modulation options for the 4 oscillators/notes it has. The Opus is comparatively a non-starter in that department (modulation and control). Seriously like how it sounds (a LOT), though the price seems a tad steep to get that sound.

@sbmphr I absolutely do agree. But you're talking moog. That's like looking at a Rolls you know you'll never own. Then one day they bring out a model that, although still pricey, encourages thinking along the lines of budgets and saving, and being able to buy that moog that has the capabilities that can emulate the priciest of models available. In other words, a rolls that, can perform almost the same as the best model but, under the bonnet there are lesser components and factors that make it the best model but still offer an incentive that give hope of one day, unboxing! x

Hey Ziv, It's The Hechler... Thanks For All Your Help Last Time...
I Have Been Enjoying Your New Videos Lately, Especially This One, Great Moog Matriarch Information And Review!!! Keep Up The Good Works!!!
(I really can't wait to see your *next* upcoming video feature: "HANDS-ON WITH THE MOOG ONE: A FULL REVIEW, COMPLETE TUTORIAL, PATCH IDEAS, IN-DEPTH BREAKDOWN, TOP-TO-BOTTOM TEARDOWN & COMPARISON, AND MY (YOUR) PERSONAL THOUGHTS" I have the feeling that it's gonna be your best video yet!!!)
...Anyway, It'S Been A While, But I'm Still Working On That “SYNTH METAL” Concept... And For Starters, I Figured That I Needed A Good Analog Poly Synth That Has At Least 6 Voices, As Well As Something With A Lot Of Flexibility And Options, So I Decided To Go On And Get A MOOG ONE, The 8 Voiced Version... (And what a beast this thing is) And I Still Got A Long Way To Go...
...Also, I Stumbled Upon This Video, And Thought You Would Get A Kick Out Of It, It'S Not Quite What I Wanna Do, But At Least It'S Inspiring, Because This Guy Took A Different Approach To Things... And It'S Called:
"when you want to play solos like metallica but your russian parents wanted you to play piano"

Nice review. As always. I've usually not aimed my synth budget this high, but as I am in the middle of selling off all the studio gear I don't use enough to merit keeping, I have been considering going for something a bit more upmarket after my bank account has been padded up a bit, and the sounds and features of the Matriarch makes it the top of my list at the moment.

  • @LesterH25

This review has really blown me away.
I suppose it all comes down to what kind of relationship and what results you want or need from a synth. For 2k there is a lot of choice and variety out there. Presets, samples, polyphony and multi track sequencing. I've bought and sold a lot of synths. The Moog Matriarch is a bit like owning an exclusive guitar. Every time you play you find a new sound, harmonics and path. I was so close to buying the Grandmother but the Matriarch has it all. It will have its frustrations, quirks and limitations but what it gives, it gives in buckets. I've had my fill of strings, pianos and organs. I want to find my own sonic madness and beauty.
So, the Matriarch is preordered and I'll keep my Strymon Big Sky, to back up that incredible stereo delay.

I'm in the same situation myself regarding buying and selling synths over the years, and I just want to get a keeper that will be with me for years. I'd made my mind up on dropping a shitload on a TVS Pro and being done with it.... then this comes along . I'm not gonna pay stoopid prices on a 30-40 year old beast, but I will pay top dollar for a moden equivalent. This Moog is bloody ugly (IMO) compared to the TVS but almost half the price for a similar feature set.

Wonderful review, thanks a lot for doing this! The one obvious question is how that compares to the Grandmother? Apart from the reverb/delay of course, would you say that you can obtain the same sounds out of a Matriarch as of a Grandmother? In other words, would you consider the Matriarch as a Grandmother++? What would be in your opinion the main difference between the two, or maybe they should just be considered different synths altogether? Bonus points if you do a video comparison ;)

    • @loopop
      @loopop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Apart from the reverb I can't think if something Grandmother can do that Matriarch can't other than be smaller. Considering a video I'm just thinking what I would say in it except that ;)

I'd love to see a different stereo filter incorporated into the Matriarch's signal flow like the AJH Synth Gemini. Then you would have an Oberheim infused paraphonic monster! The possibilities with this and Eurorack are endless. Pretty darn exciting. It also would be cool to see a video diving deeper into the cross modulation options with those 4 analog oscillators, and incorporating other digital/esoteric oscillators into the signal flow. Cheers and thanks for a great video!

I'm wondering if this would save me from dropping a ton on a TVS pro, in regard that it has a similar feature set but the moog being a lot cheaper, and MUCH uglier with a face only a Mother could love, ironically... but can it sound as fat and as lush as a TVS or is that why the TVS is Soooo expensive, and are the differences in filters a compromise. Ok, what I'm asking if anyone knows, is this synth going to give me a similar quality of sound as a proven proper pro analogue sound of the TVS (yes i know it wont sound the same) or will i want to flog it on ebay in a few months because It just sounds compromised? Serious question as ive owned3 x mother 32's and a sub 37 and sold them because yhey didnt live up to what I hoped them to be... although I love the m32 sequencer 😀👍

Awesome, I'm truly mesmerized. This tutorial is helpful and inspiring on so many levels.
While I'm quite familiar w/subtractive synthesis from my Sequential PROPHET 10, I am stunned by all those out-of-the-box patching tipps that change the basic wonderful Moog sound in a characterful if not weird yet musical way.
Just ordered my MATRIARCH because it complements the PROPHET so nicely and I'm very much looking forward to try out all those great ideas from your demo.
While being crystal clear, on point, and always understandable, this master class is also so condensed that I will be coming back to it surely more than a couple of times to learn and grasp it all in more depth.
With your vid, I will need the manual only to solve the global settings riddles. LOL…
    Thanks a lot.
    Keep on groovin'!
P.S.: I would love to see a PROPHET rev4 tutorial by you - to see what you do with that beloved intriguing Poly Mod feature!

Fantastic overview (as ever). I'm at a loss for why there are still Korg Mono/Polys going for over $2k on the bay. This is a mono/poly with 90+ patch points, MIDI, aftertouch, better filter, loopable envelopes, polyphonic sequencer, modulatable delay....... for the same price. New!
