      After it gets broke in use a oil treatment like Motorkote(Walmart), it will make it last longer and will lower the noise a few decibels

    I purchased the Westinghouse I 2000 four years ago with no problems. Mine started first time on three pulls at sea level. The longer it sets with fuel, the more pulls it will require. I am using mine for backup power during hurricane season.

    I am not so keen on live streams no matter what the subject but to be honest, I watch because there is a small chance that I might learn something from your tech and tech reviews. Plus, it is really useful to see things through someone else's eyes and how they attack problems and build things. Sometimes there are better ways to do things whether it be from past experience or purely by accident.

    I bought this gen. Ran my ac on it. The very next day every immediate camper came over to me and voiced their displeasure about excessive noise. IT IS LOUD!! so if you want a loud gen...buy this one. This gen is way louder at standard idle than a honda eu2200i at full throttle.

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think 68 db from a meter away under a/c load is very loud. You must be camping within spitting range of others. Of course the Honda is quieter. It's also 3x the price.

      @@HOBOTECH 68 db is extremely loud. And your db measurement is flawed. You measured the front of the genset. Measure the db at the exhaust where the real noise is. And better yet...when neighbors come over and complain about gen noise...it's loud!!!!! You get what you pay for. Quality costs. Plain and simple.

    What really helps me make a purchasing decision is actual live demos of typical RV appliances, etcetera, such as you demo'ing your air conditioning unit and your 3qt Instant Pot. For example what about hot water heaters for shower - if not using propane - ?? Does it charge a house battery - what type? or is that redundant?

  • @WilliamParmley
    @WilliamParmley 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    To answer your question at the end -- I'm learning a lot from your videos. I'm not a van camper or a camper at all for that matter. But, I am interested in solutions for backup power and comfort during power outages that might result from tornadoes, ice storms, and other extreme weather events, as well as the ability to charge electronics while traveling. After going through two bad ice storms in 2008 and 2009 we bought a Honda EU2000i, and we just bought a Jackery Explorer 500 that can keep the DSL modem/router going, charge electronics, etc. without running the generator. Hoping to expand into solar power and looking for other low-impact useful loads to run off the Jackery such as USB fans and... ???. So, for my interest I would definitely appreciate more reviews, technical videos, and how-to videos.

Propane conversion companies not real sure if they have a propane kit with out a technical carburator stud measurement first. Waiting to get a generator sale maybe winter they will reduce the price. the reason it says not to run without a load,,,all small air cooled engines need to run full speed. The flywheel has fins. Those fins cause air turbulence. Low speed doesn't give enough air circulation. Also for those of you reading this with typical lawn mowers, they are designed to have engine speed at full speed, never run any air cooled engines at low speed.

    • @j.b.9895
      @j.b.9895 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave's RV Channel the reason you don’t run generators with no load is to prevent diode burnout, even a small light bulb will do the trick. Light load, less gas, less heat, less cooling needed. Full load, more gas, more heat, more cooling needed. Running a generator at full speed simply for more cooling is self defeating. On the other hand running a lawn tractor under load but controlling ground speed with engine RPM will overhead a air cooled unit. Run the engine at full speed and control ground speed with gear selection

    does octane matter in these engines? would it run better with super vs. regular gas?

    • @jeladsnikpoh1289
      @jeladsnikpoh1289 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      As someone who knows mechanics... generally, no on higher octane. These are low compression/low performance engines. Octane only reduces dangerous preignition, knocking, or pinging which is where the fuel explodes before it's supposed to. It happens in highly tuned, high compression, turbocharged, supercharged, or other performance engines, when fuel is too explosive or low octane for that engine. High performance engines need fuel that is slightly harder to ignite, or higher octane. That being said, these small engines HATE ethanol that sits in carb for periods of time. Ethanol-free gas if you choose to afford it will make them last longer, or you should drain carburetor if not running it regularly. Also highly recommended is running top-tier fuel (many name-brand gas stations, Google Top Tier fuel), or fuel with higher concentration of fuel-system cleaners. I run Berrymans B12 Chemtool additive in Marathon Gas (or other inexpensive Top Tier) in all my gasoline engines. You're Welcome😁

    No need to remove plug and prime the chamber with Marvel, along with few cord tugs?
    When will you install $20 meter; hour usage and RPM readouts
    How long before you empty that initial oil?
    Some pundits suggests 1 hour no load - then new oil - or sumfin like that.
    Do you believe in magnetic dipstick ?
    1/3 related load ??? Econo mode is designed for operating intermittent stuff like sump pumps. which may or may not go on.

      I believe in following the manual. They say change the oil at 20 hours that's what I did. I'm going to hit my 2nd change today at 50 hours. Magnetic dipstick is a good idea but don't know if they have one for my model. Next video will be installing an hour meter.

    • @jeladsnikpoh1289
      @jeladsnikpoh1289 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If available for that model, I'd highly recommend a magnetic dipstick! Got one on my dependable Yamaha, and I see/remove fine silt on it every oil change or top-off. That's the stuff that could've been wearing out my cylinder walls, etc., BUT DIDNT! Also highly recommend an hour meter to keep track of maintenance, hours, etc. Remember to remove it when you're selling your 251,837-hour generator! 😂 About the value of Honda, they're among the best, but worth the $? NO! At the time of my purchase years ago, I chose a slightly expensive, but $300 cheaper-than-Honda Yamaha inverter gen. The Yamaha had several key advantages over the Honda, like fuel shutoff, dependable timing gear instead of Honda's notoriously disposable interference timing belt, and same power output from a smaller,more fuel efficient engine. It has been bulletproof through many hours of use, 1pull every time, even in below-zero temps. I've got from 11.5 to 14hours on one gallon of fuel every time, over thousands of hours. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Honda!

    Hey there. What size ac will run on a 2000 peak? I tried mine but I think my ac unit needs more power unfortunately. What is the instant pot that it will run that. There so great right. How often should you change your spark plug?

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can probably run a 6000 or 8000 btu on a 2k but it must have a soft start built in. Any Instant Pot will run on a 2k. Spark plug change is every 300 hours.

    Can you use a gas gen to charge a solar gen when cloudy

    • @jeladsnikpoh1289
      @jeladsnikpoh1289 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm 4 years late to seeing your question, but the answer is 'yes'- if the solar generator has a way of plugging into 120v power outlets. I live off-grid in solar powered Motorhome. Basically a Solar gen is a miniature version of my motor home electrical system- Solar and/or 120v plug-in charges the 12v battery/ies, and an inverter converts the 12v into 120v to run appliances when not plugged in to 120.

    My guess was 5 pulls for the initial start and 1 pull for the second start so that makes me 1 for 2. Overall, it looks like a nice buy for under $400. One thing I noticed about the Westinghouse lineup is they are rated about 200 or more watts more than completing units. Since it ran your 900 watt cooker at altitude, it appears the specs are close to true output. That was a surprise to hear the unit was assembled in the US. I figured it was a branded unit out of a large China company since Westinghouse is a licensed name.
    It does look relatively large for a 1200 watt unit. I am thinking in terms of how it would compare in size to a Honda 1000 and 2000. That would be my only knock on it for folks like you that are very limited on space. It is hard to tell how large it is without being next to another model so I may be wrong on that. Weight at 33 lbs looks good and close enough to the Honda 1000 at 29 lb.
    As far as the channel goes, I like the mix you have now of product reviews, travel, problems on the road and RV life. They all make for interesting topics so Iwould say just go with what you find interesting and informative.

      The "assembled in USA " is somewhat misleading as the parts are still made overseas and that's where the issues arise.

      I think Briggs & Stratton are one of the few left that actually build small engines in the USA. Everything else comes from China.

    I have this generator in my Amazon List, but my 800w Dirty Hands is holding up. Right now Sams has the version you wore out for $200. I'd like to know how well it will charge the Battle Born if/when you get them. The whole point of lith is to be able to charge quickly with none of the annoying finish stage issues you get with lead. You don't even have to fully charge.
    I wish they had so called hybrid inverters for reasonable money. That way you can run the generator and also pull some power out of the battery bank, on AC. It makes a low power generator more useful. I think there are some on Ebay, pure Chinese. The good ones are about 4x the Westinghouse.
    Thanks

    • @HOBOTECH
      @HOBOTECH  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My 55 amp converter pulls a max of 950 watts so the iGen1200 should be able to charge the Battleborns no problem. I also have 500 watts of solar now on two solar controllers, one is a lithium model designed to "kick start" lithiums if I run them down to zero. Many times I wish I could fit one of those hybrid jobs because then I could use extra solar watts to power the a/c and save gas.

      Good question, I'd also like to see if it's alive after 4 years! I've got a rock-solid Yamaha 2000 with thousands of hours, but looking to get something even smaller to be even more portable and fuel efficient. Even my small 2000w is bigger than necessary for my off-grid solar lifestyle, but I fear a tiny Westinghouse would be less reliable...
