ICF Mountain Homestead: Installing the Septic System

  • We have a lot of earth moving equipment on the property so we're going to take advantage of that and get the septic system installed and check one more big project off the list. We installed a 1000 gallon concrete septic tank and three 75' drain lines, then sleeved the sewer line in a 6" piece of corrugated culvert pipe since the driveway will run over the line.

    Make scaled drawings of all underground lines and septic lines. Don't depend on your memory 10 - 15 years down the road to locate these lines. I did this for all the people I built houses for and gave them this in a package with all their warranty books and contact info of the suppliers for everything that went into the construction of their home. A real go to folder when you have a question or problem. Just a thought for you, doing a good job! It's like a mouse eating an elephant, "don't let the size of the job concern you, take it on one bite at a time".

    You may want easy access to your filter and septic tank - it is easy to maintain yourself if you have access to the tank. If the entire thing is buried, you have no way to rinse the filter every few months, which is simple routine maintenance to avoid problems in the future.

    Over the years, keep an eye on (and eliminate) any trees that may sprout up within 30 or so feet of any of your field lines. This will save you a lot of grief. Those roots can travel a long way. Speaking from experience.

    Great video. You have enough of, what we call, lateral lines that you should never have any problem with your septic tank especially because they run downhill. We put in a similar system, and in 14 years never had to have the tank pumped even once. I would have liked to see the corrugated culvert pipe as we will need that on our property.

    I mentioned in the previous video comments, but I'm not sure if you go back that far to look at comments :) Unless you have other plans for them, you could use the logs from the trees that were removed as temporary retaining walls on the slope, by the time they rot away, the grass should be well established.

    Thought beside the septic tank was where you pour the concrete base for the monopole wind tower. You have lots of up draft/thermal wind there and it would do much more than your solar. Yes I know you have hydro but a hybrid system might just cancel out that bill. check out Skystream on a 60 foot monopole tower.

    I’m in Australia and we havesome really stupid rule regarding rain water tanks which are very commen in rural areas nearly all homes depend on rain water collected off your roof and channeled into the tank by gutters and pvc pipe but a lot of shires make you use a plumber to hook up your gutters to your rain water tank it’s not rocket science but for some reason it is assumed you are too stupid to do it on your own it pretty hard to get wrong you just have to rem er to keep a fall in your guts so gravity will let the water run down to the tank if you get it wrong all that happens is. You don’t get all the water that falls on your roof into your tank which is annoying but not tragic no one dies and it won’t cause the house to fall down

    Just curious but why would you put your septic tank out in front of your house? Was there not a better location instead to where you could have placed it?

    • @dblood8529
      @dblood8529 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some folks like it in the front because of the set backs. Septic in the back can limit you from getting things like a pool or hard scapes and structures. Not sure if this was his case or not. I wish mine was in the front so I could utilize more of my back yard.

      He’s got lids but buried under three feet of dirt n grass won’t be a pleasure to dig them out later lol they make extensions to get the lids closer to the surface

      @@lahondafolk4334 yes but that requires you to dig lol and i have done a few. the new type has a pipe with a lid the truck can get it cleaned out without any digging.

      Most states. Its code to bring both tank covers out of the ground to grade. If your state isn't. it will be soon.

      Do you not understand how some Countys/Shires etc required things such as sewage and electrical to be finshed off etc by licenced contractors? And Jamie no doubt would have done that like he mentioned in the video, had he not require local inspector to certify it...

      Or maybe you can accept Jamie & Jeremy to do/say/play whatever they want on Their channel. Here's an idea... turn on "cc", click on mute and play your own music. It's a win win!

      @@Guildbrookfarm I wouldn't worry about the nay sayers and whiners.... you aren't Doug & Stacy and you have every right to make your home to your liking. Use electricity if you want, plumbing the way you want, etc. You aren't claiming to be offgrid and they are many ways to be sustainable. You've demonstrated this in the past.
