We have a septic system. You really demystified how the whole thing works. I like how we have this check pipe with a bristle that allows us to monitor that your children and friends don't screw up the system. But I can see where that is just extra. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge.
Excellent video. Your explanations make perfect sense at every turn. One small suggestion I have would be to rough up the fittings and pipe ends with sandpaper before applying cement. It's the old way that plumbers used to ensure solid mechanical/chemical bonding before primer/cleaner solvents came around. I used this method on supply line piping to re-plumb an entire house from scratch and it works like a charm.
I also use an unconventional method for digging out hillsides, trenches and holes . I use my Amazon electric rototiller with the outer tines removed . It will chop through the hardest soils. and make for easy shoveling.

It might not be under to much pressure at the moment but i thinknid still use cleaner and id do about a quarter turn once pipe was pushed together after glue was on it. Great video tho and looking forward to building my own soon. Thanks for sharing andteaching

Cleaning the joint first DOES matter. It's not a cleaner, it is an etch primer meaning it primes the surface by etching into it. There is a glaze that should be removed before the solvent cement is put on the two surfaces. Once the glaze is removed and the surfaces are etched it then allows the solvent cement to melt into both surfaces, thus creating a chemical weld. If you don't do it that way and the pipe moves, the joint will crack, leaking out effluent and allowing roots to grow in. Because of the way you backfilled with just ordinary dirt, especially under the pipe, I guarantee the pipe will move. The trench was not wide enough to have easy access to the pipe so that you could ram in 10mm, (3/8) blue metal or stones UNDER the pipe to correctly support it. Shoving dirt under the pipe is a recipe for disaster. The minimum fall for sewer pipe is, 1:60. If you give a fall of 1" in 4', then that's a fall of 1:48. I think you will find that your fittings come with a 2 degree fall, eg, a 90 degree bend is actually marked 88 degrees, giving it a 2 degree fall. To check if the fall is correct, when you lay the horizontal pipe in the trench with a bend on the end, put a small level across the vertical socket in line with the long pipe and if the pipe has the right fall the rising socket will be level. A septic tank should be no closer than 1.5M (5ft) from the house and before the line enters the tank, you should have a cleaning access in the horizontal line allowing easy cleaning to the tank and to the vertical WC riser. When you run the tank outlet, it should be far enough from the tank, that the level of the ground where the leach field is, is 450mm (18") below the level of the tank outlet. Why? To ensure that the effluent does not back up into the tank and then the house. You didn't mention putting in a yard gully, that's a 'P' trap with a grate on top, to protect the house from surcharge. I'm wondering if all you have in the house is a toilet. If so that's fine. But, if there is a shower, basin, laundry tub and kitchen sink, where will you run that grey water? If you bypass the septic tank and run it directly to the leach field, then you have a future disaster on your hands. You could connect it to your vent line, but then your septic tank will be overloaded, it's too small. Also, unless you have a perfect seal on the septic lid, or the top of the tank is 100mm (4") above the ground, water will get in and also overload the tank. Detergents keep oil in solution for a long time, even through a grease arrestor. Once grease enters the leach field, it will act like a plastic sheet, sealing off the ground so you eventually have no absorption.
I forgot to mention; There should also be a vent of some kind on the septic tank. Normally the underside of the lid is 100mm/4" above the ground. That would allow an induct vent installed on usually the access port above the tank outlet. This gives cross ventilation through the tank and up the main vent which also equalises pressure within the system.
I love the rope and lever trick at 6:00. I don't know how many times I have had to connect an electric or water line in a trench to a building and it is usually a pain to get a good deep connection.

As a Plumbing Gas and Mechanical inspector for 30 years I had to make decisions based on codes for the City. And I went to many conventions year after year where we heard Underwriters and Manufacturers plead their cases and as a member of the ICC we would vote to deny or accept a resolution to adopt as code. I will say a majority was well thought out by professionals with engineering and architectural degrees, but many codes are driven by manufacturers products in pushing sales. Like non pressure piping using cleaner that will be underground is quite ridiculous. I’m now retired and live rural on a river and love the fact that neighbors are off the grid from inspections. I just spent $10,000 for a 200 Amp Square D Panel box , Sub panel inside house and new mast through the roof with a permit and with an Electrical inspector approved. Could have had it done without a permit and done this myself but insurance companies will subpoena all inspections department records if your house burns down to find ways avoid paying you especially when they see the work was done without a permit. I believe inspections are essential in electrical and gas work. Love your gray water system. We love raised gardens and I am about to re-plumb our entire house with a gray water system. This was an interesting approach in using gray water in gardening. Hope you show us the end results with your garden.

The house I grew up in had a ceptic tank. My mom had to replace the cement lid one time. The company that came out to fix it was blown away because it was clean as a whistle. My mom had never had to have it cleaned out in the 35 years she owned the house. When asked what she did she said, "I feed it on a regular basis". In other words she put "good bugs" in it that ate the poop and toilet paper. She only used Scott toilet paper (it's biodegradable), and never bought anything else. She knew how to take care of a cepit system. Today, I only buy the same toilet paper because I'm also on a ceptic system. She taught me well, and I'm 77 years old.
I agree about your video being super informative..I am needing to add a clean out tee to my already installed septic tank pipe (line)..would you know how deep I have to dig and what tools I'd need that would work best to cut into (already installed) pipe...and how would I figure how much pipe to cut out for the clean out tee to fit right..?? a woman trying to do it myself...asap. Having to make repairs on a 40 year old plastic tank. The outset side was leaking at the tank seal. The tank was too close to the walkway by the kitchen. I will be installing a riser for easy access using a spray foam to seal above the outlet. Any ideas on this would help. Really got a lot of help from your videos. Thank you God bless
Absolutely correct. I'm sure there have been millions of joints made with only glue, and I'm sure most of them held well enough. But without the primer, that is not a proper installation.
The cleaner is NOT a cleaner but an etch primer. It DOES clean both surfaces but its main function is to remove the glaze from those two surfaces. When it does, it also etches in and softens the surfaces allowing the solvent cement (blue glue) to eat into the UPVC and create a chemical weld. I have exposed many joints where etch primer was not used and almost every one of them leaked. I have seen plumber who prime a number of joints so as to speed up the operation. That's wrong too! By the time you get round to do the last in the group, the surfaces of the joint may be clean but the plastic is not soft. It must be soft from the etch primer so as the solvent cement can properly etch in as well.
I glued a few joints at my pump with just the purple cleaner stuff,I'm dumb and forgot to use 2nd step glue. Left it that way and waited for the leaks. After about 5 yrs still not leaking. But I'm in central Florida so no real cold. When it starts to leak I'll fix it right🍺
I'm buying a property with an aerobic septic system and I will absolutely convert it day one when I take possession of the property to a conventional septic system. I need pointers on conversion.
In the early 70's we had to change out a cracked concrete tank, the fellow who built the tanks advised putting a dead chicken and 10# of sugar into the tank to kick off fermentation. To this day if I have my tank pumped I'll flush a bag of sugar, no need for the chicken if the tank has been running.
Back in the late 50's my grand mother passed away at 82 years old. She wouldn't let them put a water closet in the house because her home was clean, and no one was going to take a dump in her home. It's all a mater of perspective I suppose. LOL
I work in the septic business in NC. I liked some of your tips some were good some were different than I'm used to. Few things I noticed: 1. the block and rope trick is brilliant I like that. 2. Even on small homes we tend to use plastic 1000 gallon or concrete tanks. 3. Ts (on inlet)are not required in NC but are in VA. (anyone listening if the tank is 500 g or more bring the inlet within 6 inches of inlet hole) Usually don't use Ts so we can use a steel snake or pressure cleaner in case of clog. 4. Hunching the pipe is good yes it really does prevent sagging. 5. Our tanks have floated before even concrete tanks. They make anchors for the plastic infiltrator. We fill them up with 500g and it usually works good, or put machine bucket over it to keep it down. The small tank you used we put a pump tank in like that with a foot or two of concrete. 6. We use Filters in all new construction it's the law. I'd recommend you get one it will save you a field in the long run. 7. Tanks come with outlet lower than inlet, and we don't use the gib on top why do you use a gib there? 8. For what you were working with you did a fantastic job we have mini escavators. 9. What kind of field is it?

Don’t forget to call a real plumber after your fittings come apart. The purpose of primer is to begin the chemical reaction that softens PVC and to provide an even prepped surface for the solvent cement. As you may know, PVC joints are not glued together exactly, but fused through a chemical change. The softer the outer layer of your PVC, the better it will cement in your joint.
K P frap I guarantee he will live the rest of his life without any problems. My father did the same thing on the house we grew up in which I now own. I’m tearing up everything just because I want it a different way. We’ve tried to pull the joints loose and can’t do it. The pipe breaks before the joint turns loose. Primer was just another fancy way to trick the masses into spending more money.

The reason for that exact angle of decline, is so the water flows at just the right speed so the solids will travel with the wave.

I have a similar set up, this winter it froze at the elbow straight below the house, once ground thaws I will dig it up, possibly a sag in the line.

Having to make repairs on a 40 year old plastic tank. The outset side was leaking at the tank seal. The tank was too close to the walkway by the kitchen. I will be installing a riser for easy access using a spray foam to seal above the outlet. Any ideas on this would help. Really got a lot of help from your videos. Thank you God bless

The cleaner isn’t just a cleaner it’s actually a primer that softens the pvc and is what allows the fitting to be welded to the pipe
Absolutely correct. I'm sure there have been millions of joints made with only glue, and I'm sure most of them held well enough. But without the primer, that is not a proper installation.

The cleaner is NOT a cleaner but an etch primer. It DOES clean both surfaces but its main function is to remove the glaze from those two surfaces. When it does, it also etches in and softens the surfaces allowing the solvent cement (blue glue) to eat into the UPVC and create a chemical weld.
I have exposed many joints where etch primer was not used and almost every one of them leaked.
I have seen plumber who prime a number of joints so as to speed up the operation.

By the time you get round to do the last in the group, the surfaces of the joint may be clean but the plastic is not soft.
It must be soft from the etch primer so as the solvent cement can properly etch in as well.

I glued a few joints at my pump with just the purple cleaner stuff,I'm dumb and forgot to use 2nd step glue. Left it that way and waited for the leaks. After about 5 yrs still not leaking. But I'm in central Florida so no real cold. When it starts to leak I'll fix it right🍺

In the early 70's we had to change out a cracked concrete tank, the fellow who built the tanks advised putting a dead chicken and 10# of sugar into the tank to kick off fermentation. To this day if I have my tank pumped I'll flush a bag of sugar, no need for the chicken if the tank has been running.

I work in the septic business in NC. I liked some of your tips some were good some were different than I'm used to. Few things I noticed:
1. the block and rope trick is brilliant I like that.
2. Even on small homes we tend to use plastic 1000 gallon or concrete tanks.
3. Ts (on inlet)are not required in NC but are in VA. (anyone listening if the tank is 500 g or more bring the inlet within 6 inches of inlet hole) Usually don't use Ts so we can use a steel snake or pressure cleaner in case of clog.
4. Hunching the pipe is good yes it really does prevent sagging.
5. Our tanks have floated before even concrete tanks. They make anchors for the plastic infiltrator. We fill them up with 500g and it usually works good, or put machine bucket over it to keep it down. The small tank you used we put a pump tank in like that with a foot or two of concrete.
6. We use Filters in all new construction it's the law. I'd recommend you get one it will save you a field in the long run.
7. Tanks come with outlet lower than inlet, and we don't use the gib on top why do you use a gib there?
8. For what you were working with you did a fantastic job we have mini escavators.
9. What kind of field is it?
Not sure what you mean by gib? The g field is a manifold system. I have a video on it.

Excellent explaining...thank you. I was wondering about the depth of the inlet and outlet pipe to ensure they're below the scum layer but above the sludge layer. I've watched a lot of videos but this was the first one that gave me the order of magnitude of those depths. Your videos are peaceful and relaxing to watch also. Thanks again man.

Don’t forget to call a real plumber after your fittings come apart. The purpose of primer is to begin the chemical reaction that softens PVC and to provide an even prepped surface for the solvent cement. As you may know, PVC joints are not glued together exactly, but fused through a chemical change. The softer the outer layer of your PVC, the better it will cement in your joint.
K P frap I guarantee he will live the rest of his life without any problems. My father did the same thing on the house we grew up in which I now own. I’m tearing up everything just because I want it a different way. We’ve tried to pull the joints loose and can’t do it. The pipe breaks before the joint turns loose. Primer was just another fancy way to trick the masses into spending more money.
I glued pipe together way before they had primer no problem.
