Everything looks so tasty! Thanks for the great review, as usual! And thanks for all the people that helped bring all of this together! Can't wait for the next one!
Most Dutch people watching are like "pop the entire mentos licorice in your mouth!!!" and are then are entirely disappointed you only bit a small piece off.
Nowadays, we dont get the cans anymore (except on arctic training). The 24 hour ration consists of 2 breakfast bags and 2 hot meal bags and the other stuff.
a lot of food for them 6 feet tall dutch soldiers, in any other army this would be a 48 hour ration, but dutch are 6 feet on avarage so you need a lot of food to keep that tall body going!. the quality of the ration is also really high!.
Aw, man, great memories. It's been a while, but many components of the rations are still the same apparently. I always thought the Dutch rations were very satisfying and pretty abundant. The cans containing the dinner were (and as far as I know still are) sold in supermarkets to regular consumers, which is a good sign obviously. I loved the lemon lemonade and the dark chocolate was great as well. I always had the impression that the quality of the components of the rations was without compromise.
with the breakfast/lunch compartments you can make a small chocolate cake in the field if seen co workers and an instructor do it during basic training and field exercises
Ps: most military men in The Netherlands buy there own food for field days, the things that we eat the most when we are in the field are: Rookworst ( smoked saussage ) M&M's Noodlesoups !! Ramen Hamburgers redbull protiën bars
Those brown biscuits look like the same ones that came with a Brit 24-hour rat pack I had a little bit ago. Weren't too terrible, if I remember correctly. Thanks for the great review! I'd love to try one some day.
The ration you got was not originally packed like that, they only come in boxes and sealed (not resealable) bags. And the main would not be in the bag. I do recognize that bag you got it in, it's from an arctic ration where they keep the meals separated.
The syrup (stroop) at 5:00 into the video is "Du vrai sirup du liege". That means it is made purely from fruit and comes in only a couple of variaties: - Pear & Apple - Pear & Apricot - Pear & Raspberry - Pear & Prune - Date & Apple Since it is a Dutch MRE and in the Netherlands we are quite fond of our "appelstroop" (apple syrup) I am going to assume it'll be the pear and apple variaty as that is a bit closer to home for us Dutchies :-)
Stroop is used in the same way as jam. Original stroop is made by pressing apples to juice. This juice is filtred and then boiled until most of the water is gone and a thik jelly is left. It's sweet and quite healthy. Sambal is an indonesian spice from red peppers. In Holland it's often used with indonesian style rice "nassi""
Nice review Gundog ! It really seems to be not a 24hr ration but a 2 meals ration :) But you have to remember that the Dutch eat sandwiches for lunch ;)
this has a big similarity to british 24 hour packs, (makes sense, some british ration components are made in the Netherlands) the biscuit brown-s and the chicken jalfrezi are found in british 24 hour packs.
@insanitybiker. And visa-versa. But yeah, they're essentially the same. In fact, there's more than a few similarities between the UK armed forces and the Dutch armed forces. You would almost say we share some heritage..... ;)
I just subscribed. Good review, I like when the ration is broken up in to breakfast, lunch and dinner. Seems a little easier to follow, however nice review!
The stroop is best when you spread it thinly across the biscuit. When you spread it too thick it's too sweet. It's REAL old fashioned condiment. I don't really like it though.
Hi friend!! I'm glad you liked the ration. Sorry for the 'Sambal'. It must have been a cheap version from the real deal. We Dutch eat allot of Indonesian food, and you can enjoy the real sambal twice: during eating, and on the toilet ;-)The Dutch army has 48 different mean meals for every religion and vegitarians. The Menthos is no chewinggum but a candy. And why not drink a Heinenken? It's Dutch to.Great review man! Thanks!
+Rogier Vis Thanks for sending it! It's moved into the Top 5! I've ordered a bottle of Sambal so I can get a fair assessment. That little bit in that packet just wasn't adequate. CHEERS!
Gundog, didn't your ration come with the mains? I picked one of these up last month, which expires later this year. Very similar contents, but the mains were included. If I recall from memory, it is the hotpot stew & tomato & pasta salad, in retort pouches. I find it odd, being ex British Army, the Dutch have our Biscuits Browns (or biscuits bung) as we used to call them ha. I also noted one of the mains was made in the UK too.
+tomo870 It did come with one which was quite a surprise. But it was worth the wait, that Hamburger with veg was probably the best thing I've tasted this entire time. As far as the biscuit browns, why reinvent the wheel if something works? Personally, I would have switched one of those out for a package of Biscuits Fruits to use with the jams. Cheers!
+gundog4314 Roger that re the biscuit Browns, I think they are actually in very little of the new British orp's which is a shame. Yes the fruits are great too! Excellent review as always mate
The tins with the main course were usually made by Struik. Nice, tasty meals like "boerenkool met worst" I recognise the typical shape of the tins. Struik is still in business.
The Chicken Jalfrezi is an Indian-based curry, typically a dry curry, ranging from medium to very hot in spice. Many recipes use Tomatoes, onion and Bell peppers as its base. Its a typical curry found here in England. Very yummy!
Apparently, Dutch soldiers are not allowed to eat until they meet their mission objectives. Or they're expected to supplement their rations with either the enemy's rations which have been ripped from their cold, dead hands, or even eat THEM instead. Excellent motivation.
Greatings from Holland. to gundog4314 The molasses is made from apples and pears it reads on the edge of the packing. Next to apples and pears it contains high iron values. An old ''dutch"remedy to boost your bloodironlevels, (witch tranports oxygen in your blood) is to eat this "appelstroop" more frequently. Our generations who were born around the 2nd ww would get this prescribed by their docters when feeling tired and not so much energy.
I used these When i had training in dutch army we always would have either m and m or snickers included. We always traded those for preferences. One time on exercise in basic training i had to open can tomato. But cut myself as it was dark. I cleaned the entire mess kit and upon inspection my 1st sergeant shined his flashlight to see it was red. He gave me asskicki g but only later i noticed i had blood allover my hands.
+RC Gusto Sorry RC! I've had this one sitting around so long and just got some mains to go with it. I had to try it. Hope you don't have an Austrian one planned next cause that is my next review. Cheers!
+gundog4314 I picked up a couple of these recently and sent one to Steve1989. Looking forward to getting into it. No Austrian review here anytime soon. Good work, as always!
Great video. I wonder though why you have turned off the likes and dislikes on your videos? I know it's probably a hard question to answer but what are some of the ... least pleasant ration packs that you've encountered?
+Tripcore The "likes" are still there and work. I've learned each person has different likes, tastes and preferences. That being said my least favorite happens to be the Humanitarian Daily Ration that I reviewed. I saw a review by Stickyfingaz just today that looked way better than the one I tried, so things always change and evolve. Cheers
gundog4314 Thanks for the response. I can't see how many likes and dislikes your video has and was never sure if I clicked like if it even meant anything but I've been doing it anyway. Looking forward to your next video.
Im in the dutch army. During my basic training i had to eat 2 packs or cans for dinner! You should try the canned macaroni or lasagna, its my favorite ;)
being Dutch, when you said "And... Ha. It says... Kip..." at 7:05 that was my favorite moment. Its silly i find that funy, but i can't help it. Btw, the stroop was apple and pear flavored right?
Enjoyed this video. The peas with hamburger was my favorite. Unfortunatly with me all the others did like that one in particular. I have still few tins left from the old days, the ones most disliked hahahaha. Pork, potatoes and white beans, and meat with brown beans and potatoes :D
+Allan Martin You are nuts Allan LOL! I admit this is a fun hobby, especially as I get the opportunity to interact with so many people of all ages around the world. Cheers!
I'm surprised you didn't choose to have the chicken jalfrezi knowing how much you enjoy spice and Indian food. it's a nice, spicy Indian curry that's very popular over here in the u.k. whether or not an mre version would be as tasty I have no idea. guess I'll have to wait until you decide to crack it open to find out. great video as always.
+gundog4314 oh man, this ration was outstanding. I love the Dutch's take on a 24h rat pack. It must've been nice enjoying it with a nice cold brew from their German neighbors!
@Albertsj. There are some rip-off/civilian "ration" on the market, and several outdoor shops sell instant/freeze dried meals but you'll be better off just going to any supermarket and get a load of tins. Lots cheaper and way tastier.
Loved the video, too bad you didnt get a Dutch beer but a German one. The Netherlands gets confused with Germany way too often on youtube specially with American content. Even my girl who is from the states told me she could speak some Dutch after which she started talking in German hahaha. It is like calling Americans something like Canadian or Mexican so I asked her "Whats that aboot ey?". Also you should have really eaten the Mentos more then a quick bite, it is the drop aka Licorice version and pretty delicious. The stroop is an oldschool, populair bread toping that also goes well in meat dishes, pork, rabbit, poultry and beef and also goes great with icecream. Too bad the pack did not contain Hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles bread toping) or some nice Gouda cheese though the last might be to the shelve life. This was from what I could tell Appel stroop (apple) it is really healthy since it only containes fruit sugars and incredibly rich in vitamins and iron. We also have plain Stroop (caramalized sugar syrup) which we eat on pancakes and desserts.
GunDog I really enjoy and love your videos , I have even turned my family onto you!! Will you be doing any more Russian MREs??? Also any advice on acquiring an in date Russian MRE. I have only been able to try US MREs. I want so much to get a foreign MRE , it would be a dream to actually get my hands on a Russian MRE that's in date... thx a bunch !!!! keep up your great vids
I will try to get some more but the prices skyrocketed lately as the demand for them went up. I'll try to snag at least 1 at the MRE Meet up in October. I'll try to find you a link for a decent deal. Cheers!
Hi Victoria, I would suggest ebay. They have some real good deals and you can inquire about when it was made and get a menu you want. For a list of menus and what comes with them for each year check this out: www.mreinfo.com/mres/mre-menus/
+gundog4314 the "stroop" is something u guys in the us don't know,... It sugar with a flavor like pear or Apple the they get heated up real good and some water is added, now you have a crystal sugary substance they then wait until 90% is out and there you have it. Stroop Greetings from holland
+Insanitypepper That was like tomato paste spicy. Quite a few people the brand does make some really spicy stuff. In fact I ordered a bottle of the stuff to try it. I've also had a few people over to send me ghost chili extract and the like....don't get me wrong I like to spice up my chow but self punishment is where I draw the line LOL! Cheers
yes it is dutch already,i could read the text that was printed on it i'm from belgium, and the fruit spread your reading on 5.11 is actually from belgium, there is writen on it "sirop from Liege" it is a breadspread made from appels and pears,it is very famous here atb steve
The Luikse siroop is concentrated juice from pears and apples with a lot of sugar. In the Region near Aachen & Cologne we also have a variant from sugar beet that is more liquid and another one only made from apples or pears. And yes we Germans are not creativ with food Names we call it Kraut but it taste all very nice when you like sweet breakfast. But gundog German Beer to Netherlands food? Please next time Amstel or Heineken when we stay at the great labels or one of the other Netherlands Beers. This small country has some good brewerys also like belgium
+Mario Küppers I know Mario, I usually have an ample stock of import beer and honestly didn't even consider a Heine. I just got another Dutch ration from Steve1989 so perhaps I'll really Gundo it up in that review with both an Amstel and a Heineken! Cheers
That is the kind of meal you need when you have heard the Americans and W Germas did not stop the Soviet divisions and you were next in line. What a days worth of food. So now I have to put the New Russian, the German, the French, and the Dutch at the top of my ration card. That looks yummy. Do you have a Norwegian or Swedish ration review?
+TalksWithDirt I have done the new Swedish ration already and I recently got an older version of the Norwegian FR-2000 I believe it's called. Along with a new Norwegian Tropical Climate Ration. They'll be along shortly. Cheers
Damn I hate when I can't "like" a good video. Found u through Steve1989. I have a ton of MRE's, I love them. I get en from the marine corps. I guess I'm not a freak after all, I found all of you MRE freaks.,. 👍🏻
+gundog4314 no a couple of your vids don't work. Some do, this one won't count the likes. It must me disabled on your end. Happy YT. I subscribed! I let the first amendment shine on mine. :) nice channel. Found you through steve1989. Steve
I think I could definitely live on these compared to what I eat in a day. I might even get fat, haha. But then again in the field they probably use a lot more energy then me sitting at home..
+Alex Cockell I always hang on to stuff like that. You never know when something like that could come in handy. In fact I have a huge box full of extras and unused items.
your "stroop" as you call it is made of apples, its a strange sort of jam you useally dont find outside the Netherlands. oh and we call it appel stroop so you we're right about the stroop part
There is two kinds of Dutch people: the ones who hate sambal and the ones who put it on absolutely EVERYTHING.
And I have both of the them.. oh :S
yep
I belong with group nr. 2. How about you ?
Hahahaa I'm the second. Loving sambal with peanut butter.
Erik Verkade I belong in the second group.
I never really developed the taste for licorice so I ok with it. Cheers!
It's a national sport here to horrify tourists with licorice and other premium dutch products.
LOL! Same in Sweden!
In 1980 we traded our US c-rats for their C-rats case for case during a exercise. They had great meals in there. They liked ours too.
It's always a good day when you post a new video!
New gundog video! Always makes my day! :)
Nowadays, we dont get the cans anymore (except on arctic training). The 24 hour ration consists of 2 breakfast bags and 2 hot meal bags and the other stuff.

+Forest Of Solitude actually we have one thing..a brand new fighter jet...that we still are waiting for..
The feels
I'm 5.7ft ;-;
We have bigger rations , the are called ROEK rantsoen onder extreme koude ( ration for extreme cold weather ) they are over 5000 cal a meal 😜
This looks incredible! The Dutch troops are taken care of well!
Aw, man, great memories. It's been a while, but many components of the rations are still the same apparently. I always thought the Dutch rations were very satisfying and pretty abundant. Brilliant review Gundog (as ever!) 😎

Rookworst ( smoked saussage )
M&M's

Het is best sneu dat troepen een deel eigen consumptie moet meenemen. In Amerika zou je M&M's, cafeïnepillen en eiwitrepen in je rantsoen krijgen.
Wall of glass We don’t have to buy our own food. If we buy additional food, it’s just “comfort food”.
Great video like always, have never seen a netherland ration. crazy stuff.
Gundog that is a massive 24 hour ration and it really looked good. Thank you for sharing this with us. Peace
Those brown biscuits look like the same ones that came with a Brit 24-hour rat pack I had a little bit ago.
Weren't too terrible, if I remember correctly.
Thanks for the great review! I'd love to try one some day.
I am dutch
Starting to watch this video.
@5:23 Echte Luikse stroop, kind of jam from Belgium.
@6:50 Theezakjes, Teabags
@7:15 Kip, Chicken soup
The ration you got was not originally packed like that, they only come in boxes and sealed (not resealable) bags. And the main would not be in the bag.
I do recognize that bag you got it in, it's from an arctic ration where they keep the meals separated.
They have this variant, the most you get are in a box as you already told. But i have had this one in a plastic bag as well quite a lot
The syrup (stroop) at 5:00 into the video is "Du vrai sirup du liege". That means it is made purely from fruit and comes in only a couple of variaties:
- Pear & Apple

Great Review Gundog...It All looked Tasty!
this has a big similarity to british 24 hour packs, (makes sense, some british ration components are made in the Netherlands) the biscuit brown-s and the chicken jalfrezi are found in british 24 hour packs.
@insanitybiker. And visa-versa. But yeah, they're essentially the same. In fact, there's more than a few similarities between the UK armed forces and the Dutch armed forces. You would almost say we share some heritage..... ;)
Great spread, and, great review friend !!! Thank you ! Peace, John,
Waar heb je deze gevonden?
Where did you found this?
I just subscribed. Good review, I like when the ration is broken up in to breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Seems a little easier to follow, however nice review!
Lmao, the way you said kip was so adorable xD You said it correctly btw, but it just sounded so cute how you said it.
The stroop is best when you spread it thinly across the biscuit. When you spread it too thick it's too sweet. It's REAL old fashioned condiment. I don't really like it though.
+I Am The Law It's basically like apple butter, only made from not only apples.
Ogur1981
Exactly.
+Ogur1981 Mostly apples and plumes.
+I Am The Law I like Stroopwaffel!
I know. I still like Stroopwaffels. They have them in the US now. I'm excited.

+gundog4314 Order Sambal Brandal or Oelek, That really burns like hell. What did you like so much from the Dutch ration?
Gundog, didn't your ration come with the mains?
I picked one of these up last month, which expires later this year.
Very similar contents, but the mains were included. If I recall from memory, it is the hotpot stew & tomato & pasta salad, in retort pouches.
I find it odd, being ex British Army, the Dutch have our Biscuits Browns (or biscuits bung) as we used to call them ha.

Yes the fruits are great too!

We get them in irish ration packs too, or something equivalent marked as biscuits AB. Mind you a lot of Brit and Dutch kit is near identical.
The tins with the main course were usually made by Struik. Nice, tasty meals like "boerenkool met worst" I recognise the typical shape of the tins. Struik is still in business.

+Lohart 15 So looking forward to trying that! Cheers
great review as always
This made me hungry. Great review. Thanks.
Strange though? A ration issued with out the mains?
If you ever want to taste a decent dutch beer, try Hertog Jan
Master2hell echt niet pis water pak dan bavaria of Heineken
Master2hell nooo try shablerton
Robin Broek true
Master2hell of heineken is ook goed
Gulden draakje of een duvel is altijd lekker😉
You could see the contents of those 400 grams Struik cans in exactly the same shape the next day in the latrine..

I had no idea we even had those here in The Netherlands :D Awesome review! Oh and the Tonijn Pathe, is pronouced as Too-nine, it's Tuna c:
+RomyvdHel If in the future you need anything Dutch translated you could send me a message if you like ^^
+RomyvdHel Thank you!
+RomyvdHel Some of the can food is realy nasty :P

Not only that, it almost works as a laxitive.
Im in the dutch army. During my basic training i had to eat 2 packs or cans for dinner! You should try the canned macaroni or lasagna, its my favorite ;)
+Ruben ten Bosch That sounds real tasty indeed. You should hook me up with your favorites LOL! Cheers Ruben
Awesome! Just noticed that the maims are wrapped up in plastic. Looks delicious

I think so, been awhile since I did the review. Cheers!

Wow, very cool. A ration from my country ☺️
Enjoyed this video.
The peas with hamburger was my favorite. Unfortunatly with me all the others did like that one in particular.
I have still few tins left from the old days, the ones most disliked hahahaha. Pork, potatoes and white beans, and meat with brown beans and potatoes :D

every time I see your vids you get me hungry lol. funny thing is I miss eating rations.

Hey gundog you ever think about selling any MRE's?
+MR101722 I do in fact. I am going over the cost projections right now along with the sale of some stickers and the like.
Sounds exciting, can't wait!
+gundog4314 I would love to buy some American Rations from you!!
Why don't the Dutch MREs have wilhelmina pepermunt?
When are we going to see the Vatican MRE?
Thanks for the video! Man.
The drink is on me, cheers!
+stickyfingaz745 I've been saving it for the right time. I love that stuff!
+gundog4314 oh man, this ration was outstanding. I love the Dutch's take on a 24h rat pack. It must've been nice enjoying it with a nice cold brew from their German neighbors!

can one buy civilian MREs for camping or disaster preparedness?
@Albertsj. There are some rip-off/civilian "ration" on the market, and several outdoor shops sell instant/freeze dried meals but you'll be better off just going to any supermarket and get a load of tins. Lots cheaper and way tastier.
the hamburger veggies ive eatn that cos it was for sale in several supermarkets here in the netherlands :)
That stuff is Sambal chili paste, very popular in Vietnamese food, and usually is pretty spice.
+ben wilson Paul Buikema said the same thing, had a jar of it in his fridge. I think a larger packet of it would have made a difference.

I will try to get some more but the prices skyrocketed lately as the demand for them went up. I'll try to snag at least 1 at the MRE Meet up in October. I'll try to find you a link for a decent deal. Cheers!
Hello Gundog4314. I would like to know where a person could purchase actual military MRE's. My son would like these for camping and fishing trips.
Hi Victoria,
I would suggest ebay. They have some real good deals and you can inquire about when it was made and get a menu you want. For a list of menus and what comes with them for each year check this out: www.mreinfo.com/mres/mre-menus/
Used this Dutch food ration when i was still in the army .
man the dutch rations look so much tastier then when i was drafted in the dutch army 22 years ago
You see that the Dutch feed the army good. If you compare with other armed forces.
Join the Dutch army and you know.
If you haven't seen tuna paté in the supermarket you're probably blind.
TheMrVengeance ikr
Nope, I'm blind and even I saw the tuna paté
Tom deaardappel lol
+gundog4314 the "stroop" is something u guys in the us don't know,... It sugar with a flavor like pear or Apple the they get heated up real good and some water is added, now you have a crystal sugary substance they then wait until 90% is out and there you have it. Stroop
Greetings from holland
Greetings from holland? Depends if you live in North Or South-Holland . but the rest is the Netherlands.
your right
so greetings from the netherlans
the jam kinda sticky stuff was appelstroop i guess. directly translated : apple syrup
That is a very new oration they still eat the cans from the 70's not even the silver bags
I think you will like the chicken Jalfrezi on a cold day, as you go for spicy food.
Was it Gschultz level hot sauce? He seems to have a low tolerance.
Cheers
Biscuits Brown in a Dutch rat-pack? Is it Britain in the 1970s in the Dutch army?
The burger looked very substantial on its own.
Hey gundog love your channel would love to get a mug from you for my collection brother how can I get one
yes it is dutch already,i could read the text that was printed on it
i'm from belgium, and the fruit spread your reading on 5.11 is actually from belgium, there is writen on it "sirop from Liege" it is a breadspread made from appels and pears,it is very famous here

steve
Haha cool. Makes sense I mean we get a lot of great stuff from there. Especially Belgian beer.
Thanks for a great video.
P.S. Now i need to buy something to eat :)
Cheers
very fine and luxurious ...
but... were are the "bitterballen", "frikandel" or something with cheese ...
Does it contain joint/pot? :D
i am 1 love sambal and i taste it this 1 from my father he was in the army for 40 years i loveeeee this kind of food
i was hoping to see the goulash, now i want some
That is the kind of meal you need when you have heard the Americans and W Germas did not stop the Soviet divisions and you were next in line.
Cheers
Thaks of course I found the Swedish vid after I noticed there was still a load more option to see more vids. :) Love these vids.
I always ate this in the fields!!
We don't use the can mains anymore.
when you are in the dutch army and you get fruit mentos + cheese, you are the fucking GOD!
Damn I hate when I can't "like" a good video. Found u through Steve1989. I have a ton of MRE's, I love them. I get en from the marine corps. I guess I'm not a freak after all, I found all of you MRE freaks.,. 👍🏻
The like buttons work, click it it'll turn blue. Cheers!
Now the Dutch troops have 2 enemies to fight on the front-line.
hey gundog nice coffee cup
we got combat rations? this'll be something...
You forgot to do a ring-piece test of those supersoft tissues.
Excellent review as always good sir. Thank You and GO HAWKS!
+12thMan Brett 12!
I had one of these, but binned the drinks as they were far too high cal for me...
We have apple butter in the U.S. Is that the same as stroop?
I have major ocd when those peeling covers are left on or some pieces are left :D Its just somehow so annoying.
that black stuff was fruit syrup butt im glad that you like our food
The Stroop is basically just a very think apple sirup... FYI
