A Brief History of Environmental Justice

  • Landfills, chemical waste facilities and power plants are more often built in poor and minority communities, which don't have the power or money to advocate for themselves.
    For decades, these communities have called for environmental justice: the idea that people shouldn't be forced to deal with more pollution because they belong to a certain race, national origin or income bracket.
    It's a simple notion, but America has struggled for decades to implement any policies that actually protect poor and minority communities from environmental toxins. Now, President Trump's budget seeks to end the Office of Environmental Justice and cut overall funding to the EPA by 31%. What will happen to the marginalized communities that most need a government advocate?

    Environmental justice is the process of achieving fair treatment and meaningful participation for every person in the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies, regardless of race, color, national origin, or income.

    I bought a McMansion in an upper-middle-class suburb. After living in the community for a few years, I found out there is naturally occurring asbestos in the area that can cause lung cancer. Who do I blame for this environmental injustice?

    • @jenb6899
      @jenb6899 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the real estate developer knew about it, then I'd blame them for hiding information and endangering your health. But unless this is a systematic pattern of widespread poisoning of McMansion communities, it's not an EJ issue. But you're not really asking, right? It sounds like you are just belittling the concept of environmental justice.

    • @wlittleman
      @wlittleman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jenb6899 Yes, I'm guilty of belittling the concept. But, only because you state my hypothetical case is not an EJ issue because the McMansion is not in an underserved community. They hypocrisy is what I'm belittling. The principles are still the same. The notion of equity is also hypocritical because, in principle, it violates the intent of EEO policies and Title VI. At some point, I'll be accused of belittling equity as well.

    • @werekiwi2213
      @werekiwi2213 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@wlittleman At what point did they invalidate the hypothetical EJ issue by saying, "the McMansion is not in an underserved community"? The person said, "Unless this is a systematic pattern of widespread poisoning of McMansion communities, it's not an EJ issue." At no point did they mention the McMansion needing to be an underserved community. They were implying that if this is an isolated incident and it's not systematic, then it's something that may be harmful to you but not necessarily your community. Thus, you belittng the concept because of their imagined statement is inaccurate. You are belittling the concept because you disagree with/don't understand it. I encourage you to do your own research on Warren County, NC, the pig farms in eastern NC, Lowndes County, Alabama, where feces pool in people's yards because the prices of septic tank installation is too high, etc. Real people are being hurt. It has come to my attention that my classmates and I, along with prospective students in the next 4 years, may not have a job in the government if the President stays in office, as he does not support these practices. If everyone does their part to vote for the other candidate, all the vacancies in office that occurred during this presidency can be filled by us/like-minded individuals.

    • @ilikecake3456
      @ilikecake3456 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I know that this is an old comment, but there are ways to process waste besides dumping it. The problem is that, instead of taking responsibility for their emissions (by preventing them in the first place, cleaning them after the fact, etc.), producers of hazardous wastes choose the metaphorical path of least resistance: already marginalized communities who will have less time and fewer resources with which to fight back. Of course there is no ideal "dumping ground" for hazardous waste, but there are clear patterns of discrimination in the placement of locally unwanted land uses, and no one should be condemned to suffer painful health consequences or an early death as a consequence of their race and/or income bracket.

    I am always amazed at how whites in areas, especially rural areas, are always omitted in these "histories." LMAO. Insert racism instead of aliens and one can perhaps understand this cult better. Explaining things that make no sense is much easier when one blames aliens or nonsensical terms like "environmental racism." Can these race cultists be deprogramed? All indications at this point appear unlikely.

      @@willieboy3011 The proportion of cases is massively skewed towards ethnic minorities, not just in per capita terms but in absolute terms. That this is true despite the difference in population sizes is testament to the deliberate and systematic poisoning of the minority populations of the U. S. Pointing at the odd counter example, or an example where there were a large number of the white population with, e.g. the same water supply as the affected minority groups is an obvious attempt by yourself to obfuscate the issue. Given the historically high use of materials such as lead for instance, there are bound to be examples for all ethnic groups to some extent or another, and given the increased cost of infrastructure in rural areas per capita it is inevitable that many of these examples will be in rural areas. This fact does absolutely nothing to disprove or in any way undermine the issue or the distribution of the effects thereof, which have been and continue to be overwhelmingly felt by ethnic minorities.
