  • Racism isn't just about police brutality or the criminal justice system. The water crisis in Flint, Michigan is a textbook case of environmental racism, and we’ll explain how it's playing out throughout the country.

I think the point of the video was to show that low income neighborhoods are more likely to be dumped on. The fact that they jumped the gun and immediately shoe horned racism is definitely a cash grab effort.

Even if your a black man making 50k per year it's not only the money it's also finding the right place to move to. Not a lot of good neighborhoods will accept black people especially if it's a white neighborhood. My uncle use to live in a white neighborhood and he was doing fine until the neighbors threaten to kill him if he did move so it's not even the money it's the people as well.

The backlash in this comment section is simply due to a lack of information and exposure to the issue of environmental racism.
I grew up in area code 48217, just a few blocks away from the Marathon Oil Refinery and Morton Salt Mine. In the winter I'd leave my home for school and have to close my eyes so they wouldnt sting and hold my breath until I got into the car. My neighborhood was called "the hole" and it smelled like one filled with rotting flesh as Marathon Oil released tons of Sulfur deposits every day into the air.
Marathon oil wasn't present before my people were, they moved in on US. They would not have done what they do now to the white middle class. Most plants and oil refineries are situated amongst poor and/or minority communities.
This narrative that people should just move is neglectful of the several other forms of systemic racism present that keep marginalized people stagnat or complacent in bad situations such as poverty, broken school systems (school to prison pipeline), racist urban planning (look into red-lining), the deconstruction of flourishing black communities (look into black-bottom detroit), and the infamous criminal INjustice system in the USA (war on drugs, mass incarceration). With these tremendous pressures impacting the very lives of all marginalized people, specifically the black and poor, "just moving" is not as easy as many of these snarky youtube comments make it seem.

Because lower-income communities and communities of color have less political power, they are more likely to be negatively affected by these things. +John Miles There is nothing new about this 'type' of racism. This is just another lens by which racism can be viewed. AJ+ didn't invent the realities in Flint or Detroit, they are just trying to parse them for people around the nation not familiar with these situations. Poorer neighborhoods are often the victims of these abuses; it just so happens that the vast majority of these neighborhoods are full of Black and brown people and it is connected with the very real history of racism in our country.
If you think that removing the right of democratically elected governance in all of the Black cities in Michigan (and then intentionally running said cities into the ground) is not racist, then you may want to re-evaluate your own biases.

I enjoy that you use the phrase "lens". think about that for a moment, (I know it seems off but bear with me) it hints at the idea of using a special " racial" perspective to view the world through. objectivity, reason, and egalitarianism get tossed out in favor of a kind of "balancing the scales".
I don't doubt that that community suffers from racism. they are poor and disenfranchised.
but what is more reasonable? (remember ocoms razor)
they cut water to a poor powerless community, because they are POOR AND POWERLESS.
      or
do you believe that they seriously sat around and contemplated "let poison black people, cuz they black"
      it's possible I grant you.

    • @tempestuousmynd
      @tempestuousmynd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+John Miles Being poor and powerless is not removed from being Black. That is kind of the larger point in this discussion. These communities have been poor and powerless for generations largely because of the histories of legal discrimination within this country.
I think that it is perfectly reasonable to assume that race is involved as a motivating factor if you observe the common issues surrounding this problem. If you look at all the variables, then you can see that only one variable remains constant-- race. These incidents happen in both rural and urban areas. They give numerical data in the video showing variances in income are also not indicative of the problem. Along with income, you can throw in differing levels of education. The only known constant is that these communities are non-White (and specifically Black).
I find it ridiculous that you would reference Ockham's Razor as though I am making unfounded assumptions. I am using the data provided along with our historical legacy as a country to make a *deduction*.
I also find it ridiculous that you put forth using a lens as though it means that objectivity has been thrown out the window. A lens is simply a frame of reference through which you view a problem. Any problem exists specifically within the frame of reference around it. It is similar to how you cannot measure a problem in physics without first choosing a variable to set your perspectives around (basically the theory of relativity). If you are assuming that you are being somehow egalitarian and objective by ignoring the framework of the issues at hand, you are most likely creating a bias. Using a lens does not mean that everything suddenly becomes racist, it means that you include certain concepts as variables and possibilities which might otherwise be overlooked. The fact that you don't realize that means that you probably are not familiar with the concept, and you should re-evaluate it.
I do not think that these people necessarily went out with the idea to harm Blacks and only Blacks. I think that it is much more likely that because these communities were Black, it was not seen as a problem to disadvantage them. When you disassociate people from your own group (a passive component of racism), you can act against them without considering how they are affected. Just like how you can send them poisoned water to save a couple million dollars without considering the ramifications to their communities.

I agree that there's racism, not only in America but in the whole western world. I've got to admit, I'm not that familiar with environmental racism but I think the term is misleading since it covers up an important relation, the relation between class and racism. Only when taken at face-value of course, if we take a look at the definition class is included more often than not. Anyway, the reason why people are disproportionately affected at all is class. The reason why people within the group of those disproportionately affected people are disproportionately affected is racism. I'd argue that when talking about "environmental racism" it'd be better to simply refer to it as a face of structural racism since it doesn't suggest misleading implications when taken at face value. Some people here in the comment section even thought that it was referring to the environment being racist. To be fair, that might just be the result from not understanding the sociological definition(s) of racism. It would make it easier for people to understand and harder for people who don't want to understand to misunderstand.

Yes you can move, but the point is that these industries purposefully set up in neighborhoods where the majority of the population is black, as they are less likely to get fined or sued for polluting the area because the people who live in these areas know their complaints will be ignored by the federal and local governments. So it is basically a racist scheme which both the industry and the local governments profit from at the expense of the black community. These people should not have to pick up and move because some corporation has come and screwed up THEIR neighborhood.

You are ignoring the magnitudes of evidence and experiences that demonstrate the discrimination that Black people face in this country. You are ignoring the fact that our economic system creates a self-perpetuating cycle, where bettering your socioeconomic status is so much more difficult than most can fathom. There is no excuse here, there is an issue that is being cited, an issue that detrimentally affects the well-being of real people.
