my dad was a f-4 pilot in the 70s-80s. he graduated 2nd in flight school out of sacremento and got to choose, and chose this. he went on to become squadron commander and later base commander, his life was cut short, but he had one heck of a ride. rip.
Just now running across this video,(F-4s are so Cool), here in COVID infested times. So back in 1978 at this same base I was also a wee lad stationed here(SAC) and witnessed my first MITO, (Minimum Interval Takeoff) ,we had BUFFS( D models w/big tails) back then. That was almost 25 minutes of "LOUD" with the B-52s and KC135s getting airborne!! Thanks for the video of my old base!

I remember being stationed on the DMZ in Korea in the 80's, and watching Phantoms fly by, just at ground level, rice paddy stuff rolling in opposite directions off their wingtips. They were freaking awesome.
I used to love watching these girls land and takeoff from my vantage point at Cam Ranh Depot and on the docks at Cam Ranh Bay! Watching them fly right down the bay was marvelous and beautiful!
A long time ago, and far, far away me and my platoon were in big trouble, and then 4 of those guys popped over the hilltop and then we weren't. Nothing but "Hallelujah" for the Phantom...
Staring down those massive air scoops with a Phantom bearing down on you in anger must be one of the most frightening moments in anyone's experience. Our pilots used to practice shooting steel barrels with the nose cannon. Phantoms are excellent at ground support, the enemy doesn't stand a chance.
Our old "Kurnas" were bloody monsters, when fully loaded with 3 drop tanks & heavy ordinance + a couple of latest air to air fom Rafael for good measure. With all that load wheels up was past the halfway mark on the runway. 69 "ha'patishim" the Hammers Sqd.
It was the workhorse for decades. It could take off from an aircraft carrier with a load of bombs, bomb the enemy, dogfight on the way back, and then land on the deck of the carrier.
I was stationed at MCAS EL TORO in the early 80’s our hanger was at taxi end of runway when ever 4 F4’s took off at once it would literally rattle your bones and give you goosebumps at the same time!! Oh the sweet sounds of freedom!!!
I used to live in Mo Val in the 90's early 2000's! I can almost see my house! Great times Love the F-4. When I was in the service, there was a Wild Weasel Squadron stationed at McGuire (80's) used to love watching them take off. The ground shook!
Nothing compares to the sound of Phantoms launching echoing off nearby mountains. Did my 3 year stint in the IAF as a "Kurnass" maintainer. This sound brings back memories.
Paul, you should have been born earlier. LOL!! I was an engine mechanic on this grand old airplane back in 1966-1970. I was Col. OLd and the 8th. Tactical Fighter WIng ( Wolfpack) in parts of 1967 and 1968. Later I went to Korat, Thailand in 69-70 to work on the E-Model F-4 that had a nose gun. Those were exciting times and even though I worked in aviation all of my life (FEDEX from 1973-2005) those 4 years on the F-4 were the most exciting times and I cherish them a lot. The F-4 was a very rugged airplane and would take a lot abuse. The engines (J-79) were just as rugged. I saw airplanes come home with limb hanging out of the compressors and the engine was still going. Removed engines from an airplane that crashed off the end of the runway one time and had cartwheeled after it crashed. Nothing forward of the rudder pedals was there. Most of the wing were gone and the belly looked like someone had cut it open with a can opener. BOTH crewmen walked away without even a scratch. TOUGH airplane. JB

You will be pleased to hear that my Dad, who served in Vietnam throughout 1967 with the Australian Army, described the F4 as one of the only aircraft that should be called a 'he' rather than the traditional 'she'! He reckoned it looked tough even while sitting on the tarmac. The F4 and the F111 remain my all-time favourites to this day.
I was at Ubon, Thailand in the 67-68 time frame and we had a contingent of British Army on one portion of the base and the Aussies had a squadron of F-86's that they were flying. The Aussies were big pranksters too. They came across to our side of the field one night and stole an F-4 and took it back and repainted portions of it. Got them in BIG trouble too. The Air Force Brass didn't see the humor. They came over to our side at Christmas and foamed down the Airmen's CLub. They said the YANKS needed a white Christmas.LOL One of the strangest tattoos I ever saw was on an Australian. He had a dotted line around his neck with the words "CUT HERE" right in the middle of his throat. Funny how you I recall some of those days. They were fun times and everyone loved the F-4. You found out real early on you had to stoop to work on the engines when they were installed. You also learned to not raise up until you saw clear sky above you. The landing gear doors got me more than once. I think I still have pieces of T-Shirt impaled in my back. LOL, Jerry

In full afterburner, the two J79 Turbine Engines in the F4 Phantom burn 3 gallons per second. In one minute full afterburner, the F4 could burn 180 gallons x $5/gallon = $900 of fuel in 1 minute. Have your gas credit card ready at all times.
Lived at Edwards, George and Nellis in the 1960s and 70s and saw these every day. I remember standing on my roof at Indian Springs and watching the Thunderbird F-4s practice. Now that was a T-Bird!
Still remember, as a teenager in the early 70's, watching the Thunderbirds at Luke Air Force Base. Amazing big aircraft flying by and then going vertical... at least it appeared so. So Cool!
Anyone else get goosebumps watching this. F-4's are such phenomenal jets. And I was born in 1993. Them old jets like these bad boys, 727s, MD-80s, C-5 with their screaming engine, 707s and so on will ALWAYS be remembered. Can't tell you how many times I hit the ground completely terrified both at our local country club and farther north at our farm back in the 1970's. We had a local guy who'd flown in Vietnam and was then in the reserves and he made it a point to strafe the fairways at an altitude low enough that we could easily smell the Jet A after each pass. You were more prepared on successive passes, but seeing him line up again with the black smoke churning behind him was chilling. Even more, his parents lived at the end of one of our large farm fields in a rural area. Getting overtaken by an F-4 from behind while operating equipment was indescribably horrifying. Couldn't get away with that today I'm sure.

i was stationed at MacDill AFB from 1966-1970. When these F4s took off, you couldn't take your eyes off them. Wife & I lived about 1 mile off base. When they were practicing their short take-offs, with after burners, our windows would shake. hear the TV, no way. An absolutely awesome aircraft. Introduced into flight in 1958. Not an evolutionary air craft, but a revolutionary air craft for the times.

Used to watch F-4's take off & land at Ubon RTAF during the Southeast Asian War Games. What a magnificent brute! We had some fantastic aircraft "back in the day"; F-4, F- 101, F-106, A-5, F-8 and my favorite, the F-104. 1950's designs that are still crazy fast!

Funny you should mention the name of God. An Israeli Phantom pilot shared his experience during a very dangerous mission deep into Syria. He told the story that when he engaged the afterburners for the final bombing run, he suddenly felt as though the whole nation of Israel was behind him and the hand of God pushing his plane forward.

The Turbine powered Land Speed Record Cars of Craig Breedlove and Art Arfons that ran on Bonneville and Black Rock Salt Flats in the 60s-70s-90s, 400-500-600mph all used the same turbine as the F4 Phantom, the J79.
I was thinking the same thing and do you know if the old kc-135s and B-52s had j79. Because I don't remember them being quite that loud. I do know that that engine has variable-pitch compressor blades. Or actually vanes.
Quite good. But I will remember until my dying day the time when I was driving past RAF Alconbury in the mid 1960s. Two Phantoms did a formation take off & went over the perimeter fence then over the main road very low indeed with full throttle & reheat on. It almost blew my car off the road & gave me a heart attack! Really very impressive though.

Nevada Air National Guard. The "High Rollers". F-4s in aerial recon. First in Desert Storm. When they took off from their base at Reno airport, sounded like they were launching an Atlas rocket.
Did a c130e engine run at torrejon ab in spain. Had to run at end of runway and got a front row seat of an f4 air patrol taking off at night. Man those things were LOUD.
Many bases are not so fond of this hanging out and watching the planes come and go. Before Challenger had its problem it was announced over the radio that you could go to the end of the runway at DM in Tucson and see the 747 with the space shuttle on its back leave town. Pretty impressive as the plane was just a few hundred feet over your head. The 747 pilot gained perhaps 500ft in altitude then held it there with engines belching smoke, just looking for airspeed till out of sight headed east (and probably already thinking about the next gas stop). Loudest non combat I have witnessed were 80's era Soviet transports, pure noise. Guy at the Pima Air Museum related how the B-58 was particular loud with a afterburner takeoff.
Had to have been the loudest jet I heard take off. I worked at the FBO in Birmingham, Alabama from 1980-1984. There was an F4 reconnaissance wing at the Alabama Air National Guard across the field. They always took off in pairs, and were extremely loud.
In the 60's the USAF employed the Phantoms in their Blue Angels. As a AF brat at LRAFB I watched on the flight line as four of those jets made a surprise high speed low passover on 4th of July. I really thought my teeth were shaken loose.
Living in LV as a kid in the earl-mid 1970's, Nellis AFB kept those Phantoms humming as they roared out to bombing practice or to aerial fighter training North of town...sonic booms and the sounds of the jets were daily events :)
Had the opportunity to see, the underside, of one these following the directions of a 1stLt on a trip out to the field after towing a disabled 5 ton back to mainside on Camp Lejeune. He sent me along the outer edge of the air to ground live fire range.

the best plane ever for a vertical tale off was the English electric LIGHTNING. would still put most modern planes to shame. most of its specs and performance figures are still classified , 40 years down the road.
There is nothing classified about the English electric. Fun fact, the lighting was the only aircraft capable of intercepting Concorde….just. All other NATO aircraft couldn’t catch it.

The recorded audio never really does these aircraft justice....So try to imagine your best friend is standing next to you screaming and you cannot hear him/her...All the while someone is pounding you in the chest with a soccerball at each rumble of audio.....By the time you catch your breath there is just a black smoke trail and a tiny dot on the horizon. Thinking to yourself lets do it again....
jeff putman yes, I can attest. During Desert Storm I had an occasion to be just 50 yards off to the side of the runway when a flight of F-4G's headed out. A truly painful experience.
The recorded audio is as close to "justice" as the size/power/fidelity of the sound system you are willing to pay for. Due to the staggering inefficiency of turbojet engines, particularly in full afterburner, a vast amount of power is wastefully radiating away as sound rather than producing useful work. If you buy a sound system that can radiate the same kilowatts of sound power, it will be as loud as the jet. Causing the air to vibrate is a pretty well-understood technology. There might be some limitations due to a low-quality recording. Replaying it as loud as the original jet might not make it sound exactly the same as the original jet, but it will destroy your hearing just as quickly.
McDonald Douglas sho Nuff made some BADASS fighter jets back in the day,this was my favorite .....my granddaddy was an NCO at Davis monthan AFB, and would get me in the cockpit of the a-10,f-4,and f104 the manned missile...

The f4 was one of the coolest planes the US military ever had. I know the newer ones outperform it , but the look is just awesome!

I have to say the F100 is still my favorite. I stood guard on one at an abanded air base in Niigata Japan

Brings back memories of MCAS Cherry Point early 70’s. Been close enough to have my cover blown off when two took off using full AB.

The Turbine powered Land Speed Record Cars of Craig Breedlove and Art Arfons that ran on Bonneville and Black Rock Salt Flats in the 60s-70s-90s, 400-500-600mph all used the same turbine as the F4 Phantom, the J79.
I was thinking the same thing and do you know if the old kc-135s and B-52s had j79. Because I don't remember them being quite that loud. I do know that that engine has variable-pitch compressor blades. Or actually vanes.

Quite good. But I will remember until my dying day the time when I was driving past RAF Alconbury in the mid 1960s. Two Phantoms did a formation take off & went over the perimeter fence then over the main road very low indeed with full throttle & reheat on. It almost blew my car off the road & gave me a heart attack! Really very impressive though.

Nevada Air National Guard. The "High Rollers". F-4s in aerial recon. First in Desert Storm. When they took off from their base at Reno airport, sounded like they were launching an Atlas rocket.

Did a c130e engine run at torrejon ab in spain. Had to run at end of runway and got a front row seat of an f4 air patrol taking off at night. Man those things were LOUD.

Many bases are not so fond of this hanging out and watching the planes come and go. Before Challenger had its problem it was announced over the radio that you could go to the end of the runway at DM in Tucson and see the 747 with the space shuttle on its back leave town. Pretty impressive as the plane was just a few hundred feet over your head. The 747 pilot gained perhaps 500ft in altitude then held it there with engines belching smoke, just looking for airspeed till out of sight headed east (and probably already thinking about the next gas stop). Loudest non combat I have witnessed were 80's era Soviet transports, pure noise. Guy at the Pima Air Museum related how the B-58 was particular loud with a afterburner takeoff.

When they takeoff and fly by, it sounds like someone is violently tearing a piece of paper or something.

Had to have been the loudest jet I heard take off. I worked at the FBO in Birmingham, Alabama from 1980-1984. There was an F4 reconnaissance wing at the Alabama Air National Guard across the field. They always took off in pairs, and were extremely loud.
In the 60's the USAF employed the Phantoms in their Blue Angels. As a AF brat at LRAFB I watched on the flight line as four of those jets made a surprise high speed low passover on 4th of July. I really thought my teeth were shaken loose.
@@MikeNaples You mean Thunderbirds. The Blue Angels are the Navy demonstration team. Both flew F-4's at one time.

Living in LV as a kid in the earl-mid 1970's, Nellis AFB kept those Phantoms humming as they roared out to bombing practice or to aerial fighter training North of town...sonic booms and the sounds of the jets were daily events :)

One fine looking airplane.
Watched the F4 do a barrel roll in udorn Thai after a flight. Shook the ground. Was the First Sergeant of a F4 squadron in GE.

Had the opportunity to see, the underside, of one these following the directions of a 1stLt on a trip out to the field after towing a disabled 5 ton back to mainside on Camp Lejeune. He sent me along the outer edge of the air to ground live fire range.
Bad ass some of their records still stand.

Jokoko Lopopo I was a crew chief on F4 at Dang AForce Base in 1968 to me is a perfect fighter aircraft it was too bad that this first one did not have the gun installed at the beginning but does centerline Gattling gun did it’s job.

the best plane ever for a vertical tale off was the English electric LIGHTNING. would still put most modern planes to shame. most of its specs and performance figures are still classified , 40 years down the road.
There is nothing classified about the English electric.
Fun fact, the lighting was the only aircraft capable of intercepting Concorde….just.
All other NATO aircraft couldn’t catch it.

The recorded audio never really does these aircraft justice....So try to imagine your best friend is standing next to you screaming and you cannot hear him/her...All the while someone is pounding you in the chest with a soccerball at each rumble of audio.....By the time you catch your breath there is just a black smoke trail and a tiny dot on the horizon. Thinking to yourself lets do it again....
jeff putman yes, I can attest. During Desert Storm I had an occasion to be just 50 yards off to the side of the runway when a flight of F-4G's headed out. A truly painful experience.
The recorded audio is as close to "justice" as the size/power/fidelity of the sound system you are willing to pay for. Due to the staggering inefficiency of turbojet engines, particularly in full afterburner, a vast amount of power is wastefully radiating away as sound rather than producing useful work. If you buy a sound system that can radiate the same kilowatts of sound power, it will be as loud as the jet. Causing the air to vibrate is a pretty well-understood technology.
There might be some limitations due to a low-quality recording. Replaying it as loud as the original jet might not make it sound exactly the same as the original jet, but it will destroy your hearing just as quickly.
