I love the spring drive, but I think if I’m spending $6000 it’s going to be a GS Snowflake 😍 *Not that the LX isn’t an amazing watch in it’s own right.
@@arjdroid Probably most guys would prefer it. I actually wish they would stick with a good old "Seiko" on all their watches. Make watches from $50 right up into the stratosphere and just own it, you know? Edit: I mean, we don't see Casio with a chip on each shoulder putting "Grand Casio" on all their expensive G-Shocks. I do understand the history of Grand/King Seiko, but just... ehh.
I think this just speaks to Seiko's ability to be the everyman's watch. Rather than adopting the tactics of Rolex and the big 3 by driving prices sky-high through underhanded restrictions on supply, they've make watches that are aesthetically pleasing at all price brackets. This lets watch-lovers at all price brackets to enjoy their products despite how deep or shallow their pockets are. Their products, even at the lower end are also well built and reliable (my baby turtle keeps time as good as my submariner or speedmaster). Then they also offer innovative design and amazing finishing, if you're able to afford that premium (without the ridiculous wait queues or buy quotas before you're added to a wait list).
As beautiful as that LX is, this video really demonstrates the terrific finishing on Seiko's mid-range models. The case and face of the Turtle only suffer when they have to share screen time with a model that's literally an order of magnitude more expensive.
I thought that as well. In this case, I think if this watch sported the GS logo, it would justify $6k. Id rather have this watch than a Rolex Submariner. Grand Seiko is a superior product.
@@OnPointFirearms The Grand Seiko isn't a sports-watch line, this is a sports watch. Slapping the GS logo on it makes no sense as it's not even intended to be the same product category.
I have been a Seiko fan for a long time. I fell in love with the LX series, and got the limited edition snr041 last year, which has the brown face and bezel. I love the idea of a "sleeper" watch. Most people don't know. But when someone does, it's a mutual appreciation of the craft. Much different than a Rolex or Omega- people know them for the brand, but many don't appreciate them for the engineering that they deserve. Plus knowing this can't be cloned and sold for $80 in the Hong Kong markets is nice too!
I agree with you 💯 percent right on the money i also got the snr049 and snr025 nothing beats lx line just beauty and it is same as Grand Seiko and on level of fifty fathom which I own which says alot about high end seikos
Getting my first Seiko - a King Turtle, special edition, Save the Ocean - Manta Ray blue dial and I have to be honest, it is so gorgeous looking that I no longer want to wear anything else. I would buy a spring drive just because of the tremendous amount of effort they put in the creation of this movement, it feels like the pinnacle of technology to have such precision and smooth movement. Imagine a post apocalyptic world like Mad Max and someone finds a watch like this and be thinking it must be alien technology

Good to see the turtle getting some love 👍🏻 Picked up an SRPA21 PADI 6 months ago and it has been swiftly pressed into daily use. Punches well above it’s weight for the price and can’t go wrong. Long live the turtle 😎
Teddy, I appreciate the explanation on the differences. My watch knowledge is quite small because I'm now learning more about them. However, I've been a musician for over 30 years and have had similar experiences when comparing the differences on a $600 guitar vs a $6000. The manufacturing, attention to detail, type of material used, place of fabrication and perhaps even additional R&D comes into play with instruments. It's interesting to see that both industries have similar traits. Cheers!
Yeah, love the turtle cushion case and that waffle dial. I also prefer my MM300 over the LX, but, I'm into retro divers and it's the 6105 homage aspect that really appeals to me.
@@silverghost4206 the thing is not about telling time but how it does it and the story and making behind. That's why you have a proper amg mercedes unstated of a diesel A class with a Renault motor. Both will take you in one piece to your destination but not in the same way.
Teddy they are both great pieces. The problem is most people would not know the difference and that's where the collector vs the person who just needs to tell the time comes in. Great review as always!!!
I think it's also worth mentioning that the SNR029 won the Best Diver's Watch Prize in GPHG 2019 beating the rest of the Swiss-dominated nominees such as Ulysse Nardin, Longines and De Bethune. This piece will hit a spot with Seiko fans who are into the high-end/luxe category. That's the beauty of Seiko, they have practically every line at every price point covered for any watch enthusiast.
I bought a Japanese-made Turtle for my dad back when they were first released several months ago. The watch punches well above its weight. I've owned Tudors, Omega, Zenith, and was surprised at how impressive the new generation turtle was for what it costs. If you're on the fence and thats your normal budget range there, just do it.
It's more the fact that the aforementioned brands are overpriced. The amount of markup is insane, in some cases it's 15x. You don't see that kind of markup in any other industry and it's done in the name of heritage and status. It's why you'll find micro brands, boutique brands and the lesser known, undercutting the big names significantly. This includes Seiko, although their prices are a bit steep considering the movements inside. The 4R isn't great and they're charging more than their old 6R models. Their reasoning is that they're trying to be more upmarket. We'll see how that turns out for them.
Watching this video while wearing my Seiko King Turtle was awesome 😂. That being said... I think that once a watch hits .. idk.. $2000? Just make it a Grand Seiko... It would probably help them out. Lol
One thing that has surprised me is how much lack of communication there is between the two brands. They actually don’t operate together. I think we have just seen a bit of clashing with grand seiko jumping into new markets and being cost competitive and seiko simultaneously trying to offer more higher end pieces within the prospex and presage collections.
I own both the SBGA229 and SNR029. This statement is not accurate. Sure, both retail for 6 grand, but both are very different beasts. Only have the price and dive watch style in common. The SBGA229 is a very beautiful watch. The handset is huge, heavy, and fun to look at. The indices that are applied, machined, have the best applied lume plots on any Seiko WITH a thin white border surrounding look like little pearls. The finishing is museum quality. The SNR029 is Seiko's flagship diver. It is overbuilt, robust, and has a better bracelet AND better end link mounting than the GS. The movement is the same, though less decorated. It is the MM300 on steroids. It has the absolute best bezel on any Seiko I have ever handled, and I've owned just about every Seiko diver at some point in my life. Has same zaratsu finishing as GS, though in less amounts. The GS is a very elegant diver, however it will not look as nice over time as the SNR will. I believe this is because the dial is so gorgeous, but the wear over years will not match the dial over time. The bezel finishing is very fragile. IMO the SNR price comes from the over-engineered robustness of the case and bracelet and the upgraded titanium. The SNR would look out of place with a GS on the dial and a lion on the caseback. Two very different beasts. Sorry for the rant!
@@DadCore Glad to hear from someone who actually owns both pieces, unlike a lot of the other commenters here talking out of their ass. Only thing I can add is, and, I'm not implying its bad in any way, I just personally find the GS diver very bland in design.
Speaking as a Seiko fan - Seiko just can't get away from their chapter ring alignment issues. In my experience Citizen is always perfect in this area at literally all price points from $50 to $5000, but for some reason internet watch nerds just can't get over Seiko as some demagogue "purist" brand. Odd stuff, but what do we expect from the hive mind? To add to the conversation Teddy brings up at the end of the video - No, I absolutely do not think Seiko deserve to move up-market. Frankly any chapter ring alignment and other baffling quality issues for years prior to the up-market movement were not even acceptable at their lower price point. Great watches and tons of potential let down by subpar manufacturing processes and embarrassingly low QC standards.
I have too many expensive watches. This watch is my favorite I never thought I would like it but I Alex wanted a rugged springdrive, this is it! Good video
That Seiko LX spring drive is a fine watch, no question on that. I do enjoy the sweep second hand movement vs. the tick tick. All that model needs is the day/date display and a lower price by about half or more and it might be a great seller. Love the bracelet band too. However, the solar and kinetic calibers are my favorite due to the long power reserves. I'm not a fan of automatics ever since they came out with the kinetic and solar models.
Thorough and easy to understand as always. I came to love the brand from the moment I bought my Turtle. It is a major rebirth of the brand and I am sure they’ll find their way back to the top class manufacturers (in perception because in essence they have already got there).
Hey man nice work on the comparison. Very informative and useful indeed. However, I really would love to see a comparison video as to how this Seiko LX stands out against Rolex Submariner and Omega Seamaster.
do you know any real 200m diver uses an automatic watch instead of a diving computer like Suunto? let alone a $6k one, these are purely only for desk diving regardless of the depth rating lol.
Thanks for the video Teddy! I think I can see the difference when looking at the watches. Now, I am not sure I could tell the "ten times" difference though, I am just an "aficionado." I wonder why Seiko didn't include the LX as a Grand Seiko, it seems that it has the quality to do so. Anyways, just some thoughts. Thanks again and have a nice day!
I was sceptical regards to the LX initially and was wondering why the hell would I be paying so much more for a dive watch when I don't even dive. Heck, I don't even do water sports. But when I sat down in front of my regular watch dealer, expressing my severe doubts, all he said was "Don't judge. Trust me. Put it on your wrist first". The rest was history....I wear it regularly now with such enjoyment and pleasure, despite having a rather small asian wrist. The beauty and wonders of the watch I will not describe as you have already done so with great finesse and flair. But this entire experience reminded me once again of the simple and yet forgettable theory "what you pay is what you get". I love your contents and have great respect for what you're doing. Perhaps you may consider sharing about gentlemen's style and fashion too. Keep up the excellent work. Brilliant!

Hi Teddy, I have a Seiko LX as my day watch and, Casio Oak my night watch. My LX is my workhorse watch, this diver can be heavy coming from wearing my GShock, it is lighter than my old ProSeamaster diver, a little taller my LX not for everyone, T5 is a joke Teddy, Ceramic bezel, power reserve indicator makes swapping watches ez, big crown yup, Zaratsu yup, this LX pro diver is Seiko but, every thing else is Grand Seiko, got it for 5K last summer, glad i did it last year, accuracy on my Spring Drive is Chronometer level if not better. My LX have seen the firing ranges and, I take my LX hunting in Canadian winters, I have to say right now GShock and Seiko LX for me and my outdoor life fits me just right, we love your channel Teddy.
Very nice video and you make all the right points, Teddy, imho. I own the Seiko LX Landmaster, a gmt watch with a compass style bezel. I paid less than $6K, as I think most do. I love it but it is big, and uses a very, very similar (perhaps the same) case as the LX shown above. It is very comfortable for a big watch but, yes, it is not for everyone. It is a big hunk of shiny metal, no doubt. I think it was worth what I paid considering what other watches are out there. The Spring Drive movement adds somewhere between $2-3K over a standard COSC automatic movement. Its smoothness and accuracy are a wonder to behold. Compared to a $6K Breitling or IWC with an ETA, there is no comparison. It is simply horologically a compelling movement that keeps spectacular time, as you say. So, that leaves about $3K for the case, bracelet, dial and everything else. Nothing on the market comes close, imho. Tudor is also compelling but just not in the same league, although they are great. I spent a shade under $5K for mine, so what else exists in this price point to rival the Spring Drive LX's? Omega Aqua Terra's are great but I think they are less watch, imho. I admit it is a lot to spend on a Seiko, no argument there, but branding just doesn't mean that much to me. And having a quality Seiko that can rival luxury Swiss timepieces but fly under the radar a bit is a plus, too.
One can't overstate the aspect of "flying under the radar", given the massive increase in Rolex aggravated robberies in multiple countries. Watch theft gangs are using spotters in the legal and banking/finance centres of major cities, who look out for high end Swiss watches revealed when owners are in bars or restaurants or when getting out of cars and taxis. The spotters call the intercept team waiting in a vehicle in the area, who drive up behind the victim, exit the vehicle and overwhelm the victim and steal the watch in seconds and then drive off. Unfortunately, resistance has led to murder or serious injury with stabbings and shootings. A less easily recognisable luxury watch makes a lot of sense and many high end watch owners are leaving their watches in their bank's safety deposit boxes, especially when on vacation. I saw a TV piece on this and many Rolex, Omega, AP & Patek owners interviewed have taken to wearing "ordinary" watches, except if attending private functions.
I've primarily collected Swiss , German , and French watches on the high end side . I've always owned my SKX 007J1 , but never thought I'd spend a comparable amount lon a seiko . Then I got the opportunity to buy a Seiko SLA039 for $5200 and grabbed it up . I absolutely love this watch . And as far a spring drive goes , I appreciate the ingenuity and engineering that went into its development, but it fails to move me like my mechanical hi-beat . Something about a pure mechanical movement just touches me in a way that no other can . But yes , when it comes to spending that amount of money on a Seiko, I did , and I can't see myself ever selling that watch . Just my 2 cents.
@@helios9663 I'm not saying that they "Trump " a spring drive. Just that they don't move me in the same way . Something about a purely mechanical movement and the ingenuity, precision, and craftsmanship that had to go into them at inception just fascinates me personally. I'm in no way denigrating the spring drive. BTW , not owning many micro-brands , I do have one of yours , and enjoy it very much . It's in my regular rotation. Beautiful job !!!
@@helios9663 In my collection I have Rolex, Blancpain , Glashutte Original, Tudor , Grand Seiko , and more . I started this journey in 1968 when I was issued a Tudor Submariner while in the service . I ended up buying a Rolex 5513 in the main PX in Da Nang Vietnam, as everyone in my team seamed to have one . That got me started with watches , and I've been hooked ever since . I hope that answered your question.
wow, it’s a nice thing that you shrink the screen size at the end of the video, Teddy.. so the other video boxes dont’t cover your full screen.. nice trick!
That super-smooth sweep of the seconds hand is mesmerizing. Don't know if I would pay $6000 for the piece, but I know if I did, I'd be staring at the dial all day long. :)
Seiko vs Seiko is awesome. Such a wide ranging brand that targets anyone who loves watches regardless of the depths of their pockets. More such comparison would be nice!
It was interesting to hear how the spring drive works, how cool. I’d be interested how its expense/value compares to a moonwatch, being in the similar kind of price range.
Impressive,Seiko as always, pushing the industry, I think that right now Spring Drive and High Accuracy Quartz movements are the two technologies more interesting in the watch world.
The Turtle is probably my favorite Seiko at the moment. I have a 6309, but I'll probably pick up the new one to wear more often. For $6000 I feel the LX shouldn't be Prospex branded, and they should have gone with an applied Seiko logo on the dial. It would have looked cleaner without the power meter, but I suppose it has some utility.
The LX series has amazing specs, but it’s just so big. If Seiko decides to have a version in 40 or 42 with the new slimmer spring drive movement, thus giving it 13-14 mm, it could arguably be the number one seller in the LX line.
Regular Turtle wearer here, and hate dates on divers, imho an unnecessary complication that ruins any dive/tool watch credibility (if you need the date at the bottom of the sea you've long since ran out of air 😳) so for me they've ruined the King Turtle even more... (having said that my next big watch purchase will be a new Seamaster Professional, but the discrete 6 o'clock date isn't as ugly or obtrusive). The 6k Springdrive is just way too tall for me. Cheers 👍🏻
The question is: All those details, finishes and sophistication in the movement are worth 10 times more? Both watches are great pieces and there is no match for the spring drive.
shino88 uh oh, we’ve really upset the Seiko fan boys now. As an owner of Seiko watches, I appreciate the brand. At $6k, you have a plethora of options new and used. Seiko build nice watches, this $6k LX is a miss. I’d pick up an Omega SMP300 before this LX any day, the dimensions on the LX are horrendous. If you want to wear an uncomfortable watch, be my guest. And yes, I would take many Rolex watches before it too because I know I’ll get my money back out of it when I sell.
Teddy , great video as always. I just bought the king Turtle for 379 brand new. In my opinion I actually like the way it looks better than that $6,000 watch. I just love the shape of it and I love that black grenade dial. And for $379 how could I possibly go wrong. Your thoughts. Ray
At 6 grand there are a lot of watches I would look at instead of a "plain" Seiko. The turtle models are where you get great bang for the buck, which sums up what I think a Seiko should be about.
Why is that what Seiko should be about? Because you are used to seeing their lower-end affordable lines at the mall? Its not like they aren't a pioneering, field-leading company that makes the most accurate non-radio syncing watches and have beaten the Swiss at the COSC game many years over.
@Ginja Ninjaaa Well to be fair I would not put this up against purely mechanical watches in a comparison of accuracy as it is "cheating" using quartz. I really do like the movement though.
@@DadCore Well both Seiko and Grand Seiko has offered great finish and movements for relatively low prices compared to their competitors. Now that they are trying to go upmarket I see it as they arent providing a better experience than before but just making them more expensive. 6 grand is GS money in my mind.
@@bingoberra18 I wouldn't call it cheating though. More innovating than anything else. Seiko had the guts to reinvent the wrist watch with Quartz in the '80s, moreso merging the mechanical movement with quartz coming up with what we call the Spring Drive today. $6000 dollars gets you the best divers watch available on the market today in terms of time keeping and overall finish.
bingoberra18 I’m sorry but if you haven’t handled both, you cannot form this opinion. I commented elsewhere on this video explaining the differences between the two.
Great review of the $600 Seiko King Turtle and the $6000 Seiko LX ( sound like Lexus LS). Both watches are beautiful with good quality. If somebody can pay $8000 for a Rolex Submariner they can pay $6000 for the Seiko LX that has the same quality. I own a Seiko Turtle that is well design, the Turtle is big, flat and very comfortable to wear.
That would be the test of all the people who buy GS ‘to impress themselves’. Would you buy the same watch for the same price if it only had the normal Seiko logo?
@@ProfessorPesca 100% I would. I have a GS sbgr271 myself with the newer dial. But I love the charm of the older seiko dials on the GS pieces. It was truly an underground brand

Hey Teddy I’m looking for my next “everyday” watch and am really digging the idea of a GMT or world time since I do so much work on systems that keep time with GMT instead of EST. I’d love to see a comprehensive roundup of your favorites at different prices and styles either as a video or as a blog post.
Just saw the new line of $1100-$1600 divers (the Willard and another model), with the 6r35 and scratch resist coating.. They look and feel top notch (I would go as far as to say it is basically a GS with a 6r35 in it), and I believe they're 40-41mm. I was at the luxury watch shop with my brother looking at tudors, and the AD pulled us aside and showed us the new Seikos. We were looking at/for a Tudor BB41 which is 4k.... we were chatting about case and dial finishing in general, and he politely led us away to look at the new Seikos. Even he was blown away.
Great comparison Teddy... I’d like to see a ‘LE’ version with a 6R15 or even a 4R36 movement which should allow 1.5-2mm less in the case height . I really wish Seiko would reserve their Spring Drive technology for their Grand Seiko line of mechanical timepieces.... but that’s simply my opinion... I’m sure they have their reasoning. @nashvillewatch ⌚️
Hey Teddy, your my go to for a genuine unbiased review and opinion, love the content, have you done a video on the king samurai? Just purchased one, would love to hear your take on it, thanks.
Amazing macro shots 👍 Thanks for another awesome video! In my opinion, the marinemaster 300 is the way to go, I bought my sbdx001 for less than 1.5k a couple years ago. Will save a spring drive for the future!
Its like how Hyundai came out with the Genesis and then had to break it off as a separate company (or Lexus and Toyota, or Infinity and Nissan), I don't think Seiko is doing a good job at looking at their base with this one and in my opinion misses the mark for Seiko crowd, after all GS was made for this up-tiered market (which I know is a separate company now). They will need to do something to separate this product from the rest of the company or I am certain it will fail

Totally. I actually don't get what all the fuss is about Rolex's. I fully get they are just sick. And I get they are the Ferrari/MacLAren/Bugatti of the watch world. And I get the history. I fully appreciate them for being what they are. But for me there is something about the Seiko brand that speaks to me. My dad wore Seiko's since the 60's and I have worn mine since the 80's (he bought me my first one from the Base Exchange where he always got his) And vintage Seikos.... they just do it for me. I now have drawer full of different ones.
I have the Seiko SNR051 because I wanted a GMT and with the dial, movement, lume, titanium, zaratsu polishing, it's the best GMT on the market period. It's my favorite watch in my collection which includes Grand Seiko, Omega and Rolex.
As much as I appreciate what Seiko is trying to deliver with the LX, the most I’d be willing to spend on a Seiko watch is USD 5k. And it will probably be a Grand Seiko.
I think an in depth review of the 5kx would be a nice way to round out each price point of these new waves of “higher end” seiko offerings. Show what beginners could check out
The most I would spend on a seiko is what I can afford. If I could afford 6k on a watch and it was between a 6k omega and 6k grand seiko well it's clear choice for me. Grand seiko spring drive! But, 3 kids, college , and the love of my family... I chose orient and seiko 5s. 🤪

I own a green dial King Turtle. Magnificent timepiece for the price. I’ve tried on a Springdrive LX as well. Astounding quality. Worth every cent.
As beautiful as that LX is, this video really demonstrates the terrific finishing on Seiko's mid-range models. The case and face of the Turtle only suffer when they have to share screen time with a model that's literally an order of magnitude more expensive.
I always thought a spring drive was exclusive to a grand seiko.
As a watch noob, this is refreshing.
Awesome content!
It wasn't since its debut.
There're different grades of Spring Drive, the top is mostly exclusive to GS.
I thought that as well. In this case, I think if this watch sported the GS logo, it would justify $6k. Id rather have this watch than a Rolex Submariner. Grand Seiko is a superior product.
Not so refreshing because the price is still Grand Seiko level.

Why can't it be cloned? For the spring movement I suppose? (new to the watch world)

Cheers!

That’s one of the smoothest sweeping second hands I’ve ever seen on the LX! Impressive
I spent the whole video watching the lx second hand sweep.
Why isn't the LX a Grand Seiko? Just because of design aesthetic? Cause the price tag certainly fits the bill...
Because it's a different company/branch makes it, not Grand Seiko
When it comes to anything about watches you're the go to man Teddy. As always a well explained video and is thought provoking.
No. Misaligned and poor accuracy.
Several months ago what! Iv owned one for over five years.
And once again I come here, reading his name as Teddy Bulbasaur
Both are oversized and the LX is crazy expensive, despite the titanium.
@@TeddyBaldassarre this is so typical of Japanese companies like orient and seiko, very little communication and direction from the branches
I agree. Just put the “GS” on the dial and call it a day.
Interesting comparison. Keep up the good work. Regards.
Great video, looking forward for the spring drive video when it comes out!
LX for me... I prefer the look and it's fun having a watch that is just for those who know.
Great video Teddy! Just wanted to say that I really appreciate the work you obviously put into these videos.
Think you could do a video on your top 5 grail watches? I think that would be really interesting and new!
LX is Too Thicc. I won't be diving anytime soon, so I'd gladly trade less water resistance for the "Grand" on the SBGA229.
It needs to be thick - it's a saturation dive watch.... 🐸
I have the lx batman. It’s not as thick as this one :) but they are booth beautiful
do you know any real 200m diver uses an automatic watch instead of a diving computer like Suunto? let alone a $6k one, these are purely only for desk diving regardless of the depth rating lol.
Brilliant!

Which mechanical hi-beats are you referring to which trump even the spring drive in your opinion?
@@helios9663 I'm not saying that they "Trump " a spring drive. Just that they don't move me in the same way . Something about a purely mechanical movement and the ingenuity, precision, and craftsmanship that had to go into them at inception just fascinates me personally.
I just read your 40 Best Seiko Watches Blog. Great read, keep up the good work.
Having 6,000 usd for a dive watch, this Seiko would always be on my top three.
Cheers 👍🏻
The question is:
All those details, finishes and sophistication in the movement are worth 10 times more? Both watches are great pieces and there is no match for the spring drive.
Great comparison, very educational. Hope you do more of this comparo.

Nice coverage of my favourite brand. The spring drive is mesmerising.
That LX looks like a bargain @6G's!

Not going to get mugged for it which is really nice
Green Erick You already get mugged 6,000$
@@GenocideBlasterNo Mugged if get some Swiss watches like the Hamilton digital
Green Erick Hamilton is actually American, just Swiss movements.
I have the Seiko SNR051 because I wanted a GMT and with the dial, movement, lume, titanium, zaratsu polishing, it's the best GMT on the market period. It's my favorite watch in my collection which includes Grand Seiko, Omega and Rolex.
I think I’m first, and if anyone asks who has been a fan before 2020, report the comment. On all channels
I have a king turtle that I ordered from Japan. Nearly perfect alignment and it’s -1 to -2 sec per day. It’s excellent for the money.
