John Denver wrote "Annie's Song" in 1974, while on a ski lift on Bell Mountain in Aspen, Colorado. He had just skied down a difficult run called, "Elevator Shaft." He was so exhilarated by the previous run that he was inspired to compose "Annie's Song" riding back up the lift. He was so excited about the song that he raced home and immediately set it to music. He dedicated it to his wife Anne. He was an avid pilot, and died while flying his personal aircraft at the age of 53. Denver was one of the most popular acoustic artists of the 1970s..I recieved this today aug 2012. Mom dad used to sing this to me every night before I went to sleep. I miss those days terribly
This song reminds me much of my Mother. She was a single mother, a nurse and my best friend. She was strong and witty and worked hard and was exceptionally strong. But there was a sensitive vulnerable side to her and I saw that in the evenings after work when she would prepare our evening meal. While the food cooked away she would make a cup of tea and play records of songs that took her far away and she would hum and be deep in thought and sometimes wipe away a tear or two. I would tell her it's ok Mum, am here, your best friend. She passed on in 2009 but I remember her always and whenever this song plays I sense her presence ever close.
That was beautiful, thank you for sharing Gary. I was close with my mother as well, and she passed just as I phased from childhood to adult years (a little while after I turned 20).

And to think John Denver wrote this song after a fight with his wife! His heart moved him to write this song and you can hear the tears and his deep emotion calling out for her. It seems to touch upon us on such a powerful spiritual level it sounds almost like a chant or prayer. Truly his talents were a gift not just to him but to us all who are blessed to hear such beautiful music. When I heard of his passing I cried and mourned the loss of such a talented man. Even after all this time this song still moves me and I can't stop thinking of loves lost and friends long gone.
