Someone in my class started playing this song and the whole class was just screaming the lyrics and it was one of the moments where I actually liked school
I am a Northern English man, and whenever I have listened to this over the years, it makes me wish I was from West Virginia, so I can't imagine how it makes the people from that place feel. Just beautiful.
Denver sings of the Appalachian Mountains. This version of the Apps are 480 million years old. Part of the Apps are in Northern Scotland and Norway. You're not that far from kin.
My Mom used to play this when I was a kid. I'm 50 now she died when I was 21. I miss my Momma. I would give anything to have her here to have coffee with her at the kitchen table . Its a hard world out there with no parents.
I understand where you are coming from. My mom died when I was 5 and my dad when I was 13. And I am 61 one now. So many times I wished they where here. When I finished high school, got married, my sons were born and grandkids. And just like you said just to sit at the table and have a cup of coffee with them. I have faith in Jesus that one day we will be together never to say goodbye 💔 again. People might think I am crazy but I don't care I even tell them goodnight from time to time. I have to walk by the pictures to go to bed. Oh how I still miss them!! Hang in there. God bless you 🙏
I’m born and raised in the tropical Philippines. Listening to this song makes me feel homesick for West Virginia - a place I absolutely know nothing about.
This song makes you feel homesick for a place you've never been to before. That's how what comes from one's heart, reaches others' hearts like an arrow and a bow.
Played this at my beloved Dad’s funeral. He was from the great state of West Virginia. Bluefield, WV. Miss you and Love you Dad. Oakie Herman Bishop jr. RIP. 3/15/31 - 11/1/19 A full life lived and a great father.
My older brother played baseball for the Bluefield Orioles...I went down there and watched him win the world series... The baseball field was in between a couple mountains, I love it down there, it was beautiful 👍
Anyone listening to this emotional masterpiece on , 1 December 2024 here please May you all cherish and enrich this new month with lots of love, Joy, happiness and endless blessings from our almighty God
I had this played at my mother’s funeral. It was so fitting. I held it together all the way through until this played. She was such a sweet woman. I’ll miss her everyday. Until we meet again.
My Son's father used to live in WV and we'd take SO many trips up there from our home here in Lincolnton, NC when our Son was growing up and him seeing the mountains so many times, it grew in his blood. Now that his father has passed and he now lives in Virginia, he drives the mtn. route to come home to visit mom and goes through the Shenandoah mtns. Which are absolutely beautiful and reminds him of this song. Just last week, I drove up to visit my son and he told me to take the same route and so I did and I cried most the way home because it brought back sooo many memories of those days gone passed. This song will always be a part of our lives, for the rest of our lives and it has so many meanings for us in our hearts.
My grandfather grew up in West Virginia. He was the eldest of twelve children and when his father passed he had to drop out of school at age thirteen and take his father's place working in the coal mines. No electricity, no running water, West Virginia was really a place out of time. Eventually he made it out with my grandmother and moved to Maryland, but this song still reminds me of him. Rest in peace pop-pop.
I guess its the longing for the life we dont have. At least, thats what i feel. Man, this went from why we feel a longing to be there to people 'debating' why America either sucks or is great. Why not just listen to this song and wonder why you get some sort of feeling to be there?
From SRIANKA. During the time (1964) I compeled to learn English very eagerly my night class teacher introduced this song to sing, dance & memorised. With great enthusiasm. We all the students have to memorised the full song with perfect pronunciations. Later in my life of 74 yes this song found a very useful friend & helped immensely to keep myself up in society.
Manuel makes me think about if my family stayed up there (we moved when I was four) ever few years we go back and it’s beautiful so you just think about those memories for a few years until you get to go back
My grandpa passed away last night. He was 85 and a military veteran, he served for 37 years. My mom introduced this song to him because she's also in the military. I even remember my grandpa texting me one night before they visit in our house the next morning saying "I want to hear Country Roads playing or else I'm never stepping in your door" but then I forgot to play it, and he was really just outside, I approached and asked why isn't he coming in, that's when I remembered. And yes people my grandpa is the biggest baby ever. Kidding aside, we can definitely say he became the absolute best dad and grandpa for the last 23 years of his life after fighting for our country's freedom. He filled the times when he couldn't be here with nothing but love and joy. I just wish you could've lived longer. But for 85 years of being one of God's best creation, My only wish now is that you keep flying high. I'm going to miss you! I'll see you soon grandpa! But for now let me make you proud! I love you, so much.
Imagine it is a sunny day, the sky is clear and blue, you are driving a car into a road filled with large green trees. You are alone in the road while this song is playing on repeat. Ahhh HEAVEN!
He was flying some experimental plane where the fuel could be switched by a switch on the back of the pilots seat and he couldn't reach. At least that is what I remember.
This song reminds me of the past, and I just realised my home is with my family. We moved a lot, but when I think about it, the place we lived wasn't peculiar, but the times we were together eating in one bowl, laughing, and talking.
My Dad's home state.....West Virginia!! His Dad was a Coal Miner. My Dad remembers seeing his Mom tend to the garden on the hillside, and wanted to go help her in the garden. He was born in 1933. Years later, my Dad started suffering with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He used to be a smoker, but quit decades earlier. It was the Coal Dust that he was around and had breathed in day after day living in those Coal Mines. Those shacks in those Coal Mines weren't built very well. One day the lantern got knocked over and the shack caught on fire.....but my Dad's sister and brother were trapped in the house and couldn't get out (my Dad had not been born yet). His Dad held back his Mom from going inside to try and get the kids. She could hear them yelling and screaming and she couldn't do anything about it. My Dad passed away December 26, 2014 and my Mom 2 years earlier. My Dad has been with his siblings that he never met since his passing. I love this song but it is a bittersweet reminder of my Father. I always wanted my Dad to buy an RV and we could go on Road Trips on Route 66. My Dad said that they are very expensive to buy and expensive to take care of, but that they are gas guzzlers. When we would get out of school for the summer, that's when the road trips would start....but only in a cramped car. I always got stuck in the middle between my brother and sister. My Mom was so good at reading a Road Atlas. She wasn't the driver tho....my Dad was. We went to Alabama and then one year we went to Arizona. It took 4 days to get to Arizona. We drove through all those states. I thought we would never get through Texas. Every time I fell asleep and woke up again, my Dad was still driving through Texas!! Memories....I wish I could relive them again!!
@un4givable Oh yeah. My Mom told me that she used to say to her Mom when she was young "I wish it was my birthday" or "I wish it was Christmas". Her Mom looked at her and said "You're wishing your life away!" It seems like the older we get the faster time goes. Those holidays, and birthdays and Anniversaries will be here before you know it. It's already near the middle of June.....where did the time go? I just want to live my life over again and not take things for granted. I would think "My Mom will live a long time" or "My Dad will live a long time". Take full advantage of the time you have with loved ones and friends.....and never take anything for granted. Have a blessed day. Thank you for commenting on my "story".
Hey OhioGirl1973 - - Thanks for sharing. I've got similar memories - - though mine are of my Mom and how much she LOVED the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, and the country and nature more generally... This song also reminds me of her. We also went to Texas in my folk's station wagon! The Texas panhandle was the flattest place I've ever been to... Years later Arizona too... I recall 80º w/snow on the ground! Found New Mexico to be the most beautiful (though I've never been to mid-west states + north-west US border states). I also identify how you were saying you wish you could go back and relive those childhood years... In fact I wish when I was young that someone would have sat me down and told me how precious time is... Does any child realize that...? (Sorry to hear of those kids and the fire btw... there's no words for something like that... but its not beyond God's Grace to console and heal). Anyway - thanks for sharing - - just think of how many people John Denver must have touched with this timeless song...? Millions? Billions??? All the best!
And I live in Central Texas, but I was born in Charleston, West Virginia & i am 56yrs old & I have loved this song since I was a child & I am hopefully going to W. V. next fall. So I can honestly say I really do miss W.V. RIP to all the grandparents never got to meet & all the family that I never knew, that has already passed away😥😪!!!! RIP to your grandpa! I moved away when I was 18 months old & I've been in Texas since age 7.
One day, when i was about 17 years, i had to run a 100 meters sprint at a athletics competition. I was pretty fast, but that day, just before the "On your marks", i heard this song playing on the field. My body filled up with pleasure and i broke my personal record and won the race. Thanks John Denver. Love you forever.
Thank God I was raised in the hills of west virginia. I miss those hills very much...I remember kids making fun of my accent when I moved to southern California. I was blessed to be raised in those hills..Richard
I was on a road trip with my dad, the last time we got time together on the way to Arkansas. Taking the backroads and this song playing on the radio. A couple days later he got diagnosed with cancer. Miss you dad. Nothings the same without you
Used to listen to this song when I started out on my first job away from home.and used to play it when going back to meet up with my folks. ...40 year's is yesterday timeless classic 😊
From France. I agree. This is a song I try to learn. I heard it the first time in St-Malo France, while an australian young singer sung it in the evening for the tourists.
I constantly kept listening to this song with my dad several years ago while my father was alive.N listening to it after so long as I remember my dad n the memories we hold. It's my dad's favorite song. Love you dad...Feeling nostalgic n emotional too ❤😢😢😢
I'm just leaving this comment here. So that a month, a year, or a decade down the line if someone likes or comments on this thread, I can relive this song. Timeless. 💖
Music and songs can bring forth love, kindness and peace from one's heart. And this is one of the songs that brings the goosebumps of love in me. Thank you Neil for sharing your love ❤
Autistic Rage Memes aside, Europe is nice for tourists. It has some really nice cities and countrysides. However, I wouldn’t recommend living in some countries because of political chaos (Poland is a great example). Also I’ve never been to Denmark.
Even if I'm italian and I have never been in West Virginia or in USA, this song is soo deep and meaningful that I can feel the love of the singer for his home and the sadness to be away from it. I think that these feelings are common for all of us , whan we are fare away from the place where we were born and have had an happy life .
I was born and raised in West Virginia. Military service and different jobs have had me live all over the US and the world, but this song will always live in my soul. Those of us from WV can never express how it feels to be anywhere else in the world and hear this song.
That's the beauty of music brother - it unifies us all. At the end it doesn't matter where we are from because we all can relate to the lyrics - I for one was born and raised in NY - my parents from Colombia
切利背小熊 Gotta happen though. I mean, you can’t have this as the best, most liked, most viewed song in TH-cam. No, in the world. I mean people are jealous it’s so good
Every moment in this song keeps you moving to next and then it’s over. Yet every listen throughout the years convinces there’s something new to discover.
This song makes me miss my childhood home back in West Virginia. I’ve never lived there, but I still miss it, ya know? Edit: Damn, a lot of you are missing a home you never had too, eh?
For every side of the world there's a country road. These words fit perfecly everywhere. Thanks Mr. Denver to remind this so kindly to our hearts. Greetings form Italy
That’s cool you said that because Israel Kamakawiwo’ole re did this song to be about Hawaii. I always said that I wish Andrea Bocelli would also re do it to be about Italy. Like you said, it fits everywhere.
Fun fact: in germany, this song goes hard. At some point in the evening, during a get together or party, this song will play and there isn't a single soul that doesn't know the lyrics. Why this song in particular i have no idea, but if you ever happen to find yourself at a party with a german crowd, put on this song and watch them lose their minds

What a story, I'm crying 😭 sorry, I'm so emotional 😭 Rest in peace, my wish to your parents ❤️ Thank you for sharing.. 🇧🇩🇺🇸
I'm from Texas and this song makes me wanna visit my grandpa's farm in West Virginia...

Memes aside, Europe is nice for tourists.

That's the beauty of music brother - it unifies us all. At the end it doesn't matter where we are from because we all can relate to the lyrics - I for one was born and raised in NY - my parents from Colombia
