Thanks for sharing your findings, I've been using 5 5 1 for 500ml MEA. Will try this in my next batch, specially the agar and water recipe - Hard to see whats going on with the sediment from the MEA.

Super helpful! I love the idea of starving the fungus to see more vigorous growth as it searches for nutrients. Also, rhizomorphic growth is simply beautiful!

can I use dry malt powder diastatic in MEA?

I use diastatic in my MEA and it seems to work fine - no rhizomorphic growth but that could be due to the quantities in my recipe. The mycelium on my petri dishes are extremely fluffy.

what are your thoughts on using peptone? Doesn't that help keep contam away and if so how much would I use?

Are you aware of any method to kill contamination in an inoculated agar plate without opening it? Ultraviolet or laser light or maybe heat?

We have not... We immediately get rid of anything that has contamination. Better to trash it and not risk everything you've worked on. Also the risk of handling contaminated media for your own personal wellbeing is something to consider above all else

Why not just transfer furthest mycelium sector from the contam onto a new plate?

If you were to use glass peitri dishes and load them with agar solution and then sterilize the loaded dishes, wouldnt you be subject to less chance of infection? I have never seen anyone do this. Thanks

No Pour Tek... It's a matter of preference...We now use the No Pour Tek instead of petri dishes
