Seeing you working with the trencher made me smile. Many many years ago when I was 18, I worked on a farm. The boss assigned me and another guy to dig a trench which must have been several hundred feed on a hill. The trencher was much larger than the one you are using and it weighed a lot. It had auto propel but it didn't work so the boss harnessed me and the other guy to the trencher and we had to pull it. This thing was so big and heavy that even with the 2 of us harnessed to it like a pair of oxen we could only move it a couple of feet at a time. This went on for days. The boss finally realized that this was getting us nowhere so he hired a professional trench digger and they had the job done in less than an hour.

The technical difficulties are great. It's nice to see that we all have little "well that didn't go as planned" moments in making stuff!

For anyone doing this it is recommended that you use flexible connections (funny pipe) for final sprinkler head connections. Many reasons including ease of final placement/height, etc and most of all, you reduce the risk of breaking off the adjustable risers when they get bumped. Trust me, they break easily. Also, please check building code requirements before you run your electrical to make sure you bury it deep enough.

Man, you're such a hard-worker. I just spent about 2 hours washing and ceramic coating my car and I'm shattered, just can't be bothered moving! I envy your energy, great job on the house interior, "barn", and you're going to have an amazing yard/garden too!

    Really enjoying watching the process.
The only input I will add tho, is I really think what you are planning for the trees is wrong.
Rather than the bubbler, I would change it to a drip line with mulch. I would say the 30cm drip spacing would be good (I think that's 12 inches?)Would be far better, run the dripline as a loop around the tree as far out as you can, you want it to be in the drip zone of the tree or the ring where the leaves end. Spray the tree with water and you will quickly see where that it. That's where the tree mostly takes its water from, not near the trunk. Then cover with a mulch, I use sugar cane, but not sure what you guys would have access to.
I replaced my front lawn with fruit trees, and all 7 of them have the drip loops and they love it and never have issues, for reference we get regular 40C days here in Melbourne.

The backyard is really starting to look awesome. Even without grass and new beds, the cleared, open yard and rearranged brick walkway and gazebo landing really set up a clead frame for how great this yard is going to be. I am starting to get very curious about what color you and the boss are thinking about for the house. Will it tie in with the workshop or do you plan on keeping different color schemes for the two buildings?

Adding a spare zone allows for drip line for planter’s or hanging plants later on! Any sprinkler system is never complete, also make sure you run spare control wiring never know when you might add or need a spare!

Surely running a main ling around the yard and putting valve boxes at the junction points would've been more efficient use of materials. Also why plumb your valves above grade?

Nice work on the irrigation - and testing before burying !;-) Your only real mistake here is NOT rototilling the entire space and bringing in a truck load of good dirt to till in!! You’ll never get a lawn to stay beautiful long term in Adobe, which is basically what you’re growing in. (Trust me, my neighbors and I have all tried. One of them has replaced his sod 3x and finally out in artificial turf last year.) Although this is an exhausting step, it helps immensely with the trenching!! Sadly, you now have all your lines in and rolling through them is not a desirable option! Hopefully your lawn stays nice because you’ve done sooo many things right!!! Can’t believe I never see rototillers in SoCal when most of our dirt is literally adobe?!? Love your videos, your planning, and your persistence!! You should end up with an EXTREMELY livable home for the rest of your life!!

  • @HungryHippo702

Also, you did a lot more work than you needed to. Placing a few valve boxes along the main line would alleviate the need to have 7 pipes in one hole. Also, it's going to be miserable to fix a leak with more than one pipe in a trench. 1" Poly pipe and fittings with clamps would have been your friend here along with funnypipe as was mentioned below.

Ben you should always cut back the foundation instead of having 'funky' bits sticking up here and there. Hire a kangol or other kind of hammer chisel. You can always drop a bit of cement back in once the pipe is in place properly. Toby

In 1985 when I was 14 my Aunt Pam and Uncle Gene bought a 19 acre home. The house sat 5 acres away from the county road or about 3500 feet. My Aunt Pam wanted a front lawn that was the envy of all her neighbors. We had to hand dig every run and they had to be 44 inches deep or deeper because of our frost line. We started with shovels and pickaxe, but 2nd day my uncle went a rented 4 post hole diggers. I asked my mom later why he didn't rent a backhoe and she said he wanted all of us kids to work together and bond. It was their son Daryl 9, me 14, my brother Rob 16, cousin Tom 16, cousin Chris 15, cousin Rhonda 8, Uncle Jerry, Aunt Carmen, Uncle Kelly, Uncle Gene, Aunt Pam and my mom, dad and grandma. 14 family members spent 3 weekends building a huge sprinkler system and planted 250 trees of varying types. 35 years later 200 trees are still there and the grass is now cut by 4 of those huge automatic robot lawnmower things that all live under the huge pavilion/gazebo that they built 25 years ago. Hard manual labor makes you appreciate a job well done.
