  • Episode 009 - We’re back with a belated look at the Sailor Moon Remastered Blu-Ray Box Set that Madman Entertainment released back in December 2017. In this video we walk through the box set itself in plenty of detail before selecting a few sequences to see how the Blu-Ray release, which sourced its video from the Japanese masters release last year in Japan, compares to the already impressive DVD release.

    It's too bad companies lose their original scans to scan old cartoons. ;-;

    Sooooooo much better than Viz Media ❤️

      I've heard the Viz releases were a bit rough (which is why the Madman release was postponed), but the Toei remasters have held up quite nicely I reckon! Not as good as a native rescan of the 16mm masters, but impressive nonetheless!

      Im trying to find a good blu ray version of the first season... i got madmen entertainment confused with Viz.... thought they were the same company under a different name overseas or something

    • @animeinferno
      @animeinferno  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're 2 different companies @@CosmixReflection. Viz have the US license for Sailor Moon, whereas in Australia and New Zealand Madman have the rights. The Australian release, which is what I've looked at in this video, uses the same masters which were used in the Japanese release, whereas Viz have used different masters for their software upscale. The Madman release is region-locked to Region B, so if you only have a region A player (US and Japan) you won't be able to play them on your equipment.

      @@animeinferno Is the English dub is Australian English? Or do they use the same American English from Viz?

    I like the dvd better because it keeps the grain intact but the Blu Ray has better color clarity

      Yeah, the issue of grain and that level of organic detail's a tricky thing to balance correctly. I think I'm happy with the software upscale on the SD masters for Sailor Moon, but when I reviewed some of the Dragon Ball Z movies that were fresh scans at HD, I felt the noise reduction was a little too aggressive for my liking (though others probably disagree!). Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, I hadn't thought specifically of the grain, something to think about if I do some future comparison videos.

    Do the dvd’s work on region 2 DVD players ?

    • @animeinferno
      @animeinferno  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The packaging on the DVDs suggests it's locked but I double checked the disc itself - can confirm the Madman Sailor Moon DVDs are definitely region locked to Region 4 (Australia & New Zealand), so no luck if you have a Region 2 locked DVD player. On the upside they've kept the NTSC video so there's no additional artefacting as part of a PAL to NTSC conversion during the mastering process.

      @@animeinferno thanks for the info!.... Since the blu-rays of season 4 are out of print the DVDs are the only option and since I don't have a region free player I have rip them on my computer and then watch them as files... Great 😂
