    Man that's awesome thank you for this video, I'm about to buy a 2012 3.5 and I was worried about tow capacity myself, I have a offroad truck that needs to get towed and I wanted to make sure the truck would do it and it looks like it was a breeze with that 3.5 i originally was going to go with the 5.0 but looks like the 3.5 is fully capable

    Hey man! Thanks for the video. I have a 2016 F150 and it has an option called braking effort in the towing menu. It came stock on low. I like the truck to intervene more with downshifting and trailer braking. So, I have the setting set to high braking effort. It down shifts even during softer braking and it feels really nice.

    Nice truck set up))))
    I have 18 3.5 rear end 3.31. Time to time guys loading me with over 4 yards too) The heavies one I had it was with the gravel and my GVWR went up - 20106lb. Couple time I had to stop on the light right before steep hills)) o man, after truck start pulling you can feel how front driver side going in to the air a bit with every gear shifting.
    Average daily tow loaded mpg around 14. Right now I went over 40 000mi on the truck - no issues.
    Transmission hit 10th if you going 75ml +.
    Only think I would fix - at the video 1.40 min you could see - Idk if those guys put to much weight at the back or its your set up like that - but trailer frame should be level with the ground, its not safe driving like that on a high speed.

      I see what you mean... I still had some tong weight... With zero tongue weight the trailer would sway instantly.. but ur right. Should be more level.

    This summer I bought a 21,000lb gvwr dump trailer; trailer weight of 4,500 lbs. Put 5.5 tons of rock in it on my 2018 3.5 F150 and that almost jackknifed me as I was pulling on the scale. Other than my heaviest load ever of that, I was hauling 3.5-4 tons everytime in my dump trailer with my truck for a total of ~12,000 lbs of trailer weight and it pulled just fine, but did not brake well. It pulled the 16,000 lbs fine but definitely couldn’t handle the weight behind it when braking. Gonna buy me a 7.3 and actually be able to haul 6 tons in my dump every time.

    That's very impressive. My tuned 2010 5.4 doesn't pull near that well even with my 21 foot bass boat. But I do have 3:55 gears with the 6 speed auto and a little larger than stock tire size.

    It's nice that on a dump trailer you can put the weight somewhat where you want. I tow a travel trailer so the weight is where it is. No moving that around.

      Just keep your tongue weight right. Use springs and if you want to get some tongue weight look where your water tank is. When I want to take some tongue weight off I fill the water tank. It’s in the back. I have a class 4 hitch though so check to see which one you have.

    To increase the benefit of engine braking, use manual shift mode. The lower the gear and thus higher rpm will increase the effectiveness. The computer will not allow a downshift which will harm the engine.

  • @johnshorba
    @johnshorba 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I wonder with really good maintenance how long this engine, Trannsmission and axles last. Of course other parts are going to wear quickly than if you were just a daily driver, thats just commons sense. But if this wears out at 80k miles then thats when you need to go with a 3/4 ton

  • @_jg00

    What’s the length of the trailer? I helped a neighbor pick up some fill dirt in a similar sized trailer and had a very difficult time. But they filled it up over the sides so I’m fairly sure I was over max towing.

    I had a 2013 fx4 EcoBoost I regularly pulled 10,000lbs with it to me the drive train was to powerful for the structure of the truck. It was totaled in a wreck not my fault, so I bought a 2020 3.5 EcoBoost I've pulled my backhoe 3 time about 300 miles all 3 trips I was astonished how good it pulled it I used a 25ft trailer so it pulled good stopping to me was worry some but it was in my head more than anything. But they can pull heavy loads really good but I like the 6 speed better to me just to many gears with the 10 speed. I'd like Ford to make the f150 have a heavier payload for as much as the truck can pull especially when I do tree work. There was a guy on TH-cam pulling a mini excavator claiming it was 14,000lbs or so that good because it was the EcoBoost before they added some torque but in my 2020 my backhoe is 10,300 and the trailer was a little 3500. But the thing is the truck survived but pulling a load like that all the time is infeasible for the trucks longevity for having the same drivetrain the truck came with out off the factory and obtaining 200,000 but maybe I'm wrong great video, you actually had you load weighed and had proof on paper to make your claim great video. Also I dont see GM trucks or dodge 1500s owners doing these videos like this. Fords isn't an acronym for Found On the Road Dead its Found On the Road Driving pulling heavy ass shit for a half ton

    I have a 2019 3.5 ecoboost, even though it can pull10K plus, the motor does great but the trucks are not really built for that kind've weight. Brakes, Frame, Suspension and the weight of the truck itself really are marginal at best for 10K trailers. It's OK to do it now and then for short hauls. If you have a 8/10K pound trailer you need to pull often get a 3/4 ton or better. Once you pull a heavy load with a 3/4 or 1ton truck you'll see how much better in every way the right truck for the job is.

      I pulled 8000 lbs was a sand blaster rotary screw compressor with a pallet of media for 15 years behind a 1/2 ton all over the state even up 6% grades to 7500 feet mountains and back down them it had dual axle electric brakes. Never once did I have any issues it was a late 90's F-150. Sometimes I would fill the bed with bags of media if it was a big job. This was the old 2 Valve 5.3L engine . It towed great I drove slow gave myself 3 car space I had a few close calls when someone slammed their brakes but 6 wheels of braking got me stopped with a car length to spare. I had extra springs installed in the back keep it level I had tried airbags one time I got a leak in one.

    • @grizz474
      @grizz474 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a mid 90s F150 with the 5.4 V8 I used to take way into Canada from Mn. (about a 600 mi trip) I had a camper on it, WAY WAY over loaded with supplies. Plus I pulled my buddy's boat with a second boat on top of that, and we had that loaded with gas, gas, and more gas. I had air bags on it with 85# of air just to keep it level. Never had a lick of trouble with it, not even a flat tire. So I know it can be done. I wish I would've weighed it at a scale......I know it was way over loaded. But we were younger and more concerned about catching walleyes than we were about safety.

      @@nickhanlin8614 Incorrect, you misunderstood me or don't know what you're talking about. You can tow up to 5,000 lbs when "weight carrying" from the bumper as shown. That would be a max tongue weight of 500 lbs (not that I was talking about tongue weight but that's the fact). To tow 11,000 lbs (or whatever he's rated for) he would need a WD hitch (weight distributing). That would increase his max tongue weight rating to 1,100 lbs (again, I was never referencing tongue weight but there you go). I have this exact same truck and this is what I'm reading off of my factory FoMoCo stamped hitch. It's accurate.
      The way that he's towing is called "weight carrying" (aka "bumper only" as opposed to "weight distributing"), and he can only tow 5,000 lbs this way. Period. My original comment was absolutely correct and is written on the bumper and the manual. Not sure why you're trying to critique Fords own verbiage but whatever.

    I just happened on this video and am glad I did. Hopefully what I'm about to say will save some lives or at least prevent some really bad days for a few intelligent people. I'm not sure what the driver in this video is trying to prove with his demonstration and I hope he is not promoting buying a half ton truck of any make model or power rating to tow this kind of weight. Anyone who thinks towing more than double the weight of your tow rig with a normal factory pickup on a regular basis is a good idea, is an idiot. It does not matter if you can come to a safe stop when traffic is light and everything is going well! The problem is when things don't go as planned ie: the traffic in front of you has to slam on the brakes because an animal or a dumb person runs out in the road directly in front of them and you are trapped in you lane of traffic; one of the bran new tires you just had mounted has a factory defect and blows out as you bring 17000 + lbs and a whole lot more energy up to highway speed; when an idiot driver darts in front of you and cuts you off and proceeds to brake because they are the only person on the road in their memyself and I world. In all of these circumstances you will have to make split second decisions and may have to make evasive maneuvers, emergency stops and possibly regain control of an out of control trailer at which point you will inadvertently learn that 11000 lbs will control 5400 lbs 99% of the time, not the other way around. There are plenty of videos and testimonials out there of 3/4 and one ton trucks and even tractor trucks losing control of a large trailers that is well within their "safe tow rating" simply because things went really wrong really fast. There is no time to reconsider or think about things when things go wrong in a vehicle and an accident. Don't be an idiot. Buy the right truck for the purposes you need and that it is built for.

      @@Thirty-OughtSick actually I'm right look it up. It doesn't matter what the trailer is rated to tow. Let's use my truck as an example. My GCVWR is 18,400, my truck weighs 5438 pounds. So, that means my LOADED trailer cannot exceed 12,962 pounds. It doesn't matter if the trailer is rated for 14k. A 14k trailer that weighs 4000 pounds can only hold 10k of weight anyway. It only matters if you use your 14k trailer for commercial use or crossing state lines. Im in ohio I talked to the department of transportation and semi drivers both and they said my truck which can tow a max of 12,900, is legal to tow a 14k rated dump as long as I don't cross state lines or use it for commercial usw

      @@Thirty-OughtSick one of my sources is the ohio department of transportation. They also told me the definition of GCVWR.
